The W-subtype active contact binary PZ UMa with a possible more massive tertiary component

Two sets of multiple-color ($B, V, R_c, I_c$) light curves of PZ UMa were observed in dependently with the 2.4 meter telescope at the Thai National Observatory and the 1 meter telescope at Yunnan Observatories. The light curves were analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney program and the two sets of light curves produced consistent results, which show that PZ UMa is a W-subtype contact binary with an extreme mass ratio ($M_{1}/M_{2} = 0.18)$. The basic physical parameters of PZ UMa were determined to be $M_{2} = 0.77(2)M_\odot$, $M_{1} = 0.14(1)M_\odot$, $R_{2} = 0.92(1)R_\odot$, $R_{1} = 0.43(1)R_\odot$, $L_{2} = 0.46(2)L_\odot$ and $L_{1} = 0.15(3)L_\odot$. The orbital period analysis of PZ UMa revealed a 13.22 year periodicity, which implies that there may be a tertiary component orbiting around the binary system. The mass and orbital radius of the tertiary component were calculated to be $M_{3} = 0.88 M_\odot$ and $a_{3} = 3.67 AU$, if the orbit was coplanar with the central binary system. It is interesting that the minimum mass of the tertiary was calculated to be $M_{3min} = 0.84 M_\odot$, which means the tertiary component is even larger than the primary star and the secondary one of PZ UMa. PZ UMa is a late-type contact binary with stellar activity. The O'Connell effect appeared on its light curves when it was observed on April 2016. However, the O'Connell effect reversed when the target was observed again on December 2016. The changes of the O'Connell effect in such a short time-scale strongly support the occurrence of rapidly changing magnetic activity on this W UMa binary.

V752 Cen -- A triple-lined spectroscopic contact binary with sudden and continuous period changes

V752 Cen is a triple-lined spectroscopic contact binary. Its multi-color light curves were obtained in the years 1971 and 2018, independently. Photometric analyses reveal that the two sets of light curves produce almost consistent results. It contains a W-subtype totally eclipsing binary, and its mass ratio and fill-out factor are $q = 3.35(1)$ and $f = 29(2)\,\%$. The absolute elements of its two component stars were determined to be $M_{1} = 0.39(2)M_\odot$, $M_{2} = 1.31(7)M_\odot$, $R_{1} = 0.77(1)R_\odot$, $R_{2} = 1.30(2)R_\odot$, $L_{1} = 0.75(3)L_\odot$ and $L_{2} = 2.00(7)L_\odot$. The period of V752 Cen is 0.37023198 day. The 0.37-d period remained constant from its first measurement in 1971 until the year 2000. However, it changed suddenly around the year 2000 and has been increasing continuously at a rate of $dP/dt=+5.05\times{10^{-7}}day\cdot year^{-1}$ since then, which can be explained by mass transfer from the less massive component star to the more massive one with a rate of $\frac{dM_{2}}{dt}=2.52\times{10^{-7}}M_\odot/year$. The period variation of V752 Cen over the 48 years in which the period has been monitored is really unusual, and is potentially related to effects from the possible presence of a nearby third star or of a pair of stars in a second binary.

Masses of ground and isomeric states of $^{101}$In and configuration-dependent shell evolution in odd-$A$ indium isotopes

We report first precision mass measurements of the $1/2^-$ isomeric and $9/2^+$ ground states of $^{101}$In. The determined isomeric excitation energy continues a smooth trend of odd-$A$ indium isotopes up to the immediate vicinity of $N=50$ magic number. This trend can be confirmed by dedicated shell model calculations only if the neutron configuration mixing is considered. We find that the single particle energies are different for different states of the same isotope. The presented configuration-dependent shell evolution, type II shell evolution, in odd-$A$ nuclei is discussed for the first time. Our results will facilitate future studies of single-particle neutron states.

Improving the resolving power of Isochronous Mass Spectrometry by employing an in-ring mechanical slit

Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) in heavy-ion storage rings is an excellent experimental method for precision mass measurements of exotic nuclei. In the IMS, the storage ring is tuned in a special isochronous ion-optical mode. Thus, the mass-over-charge ratios of the stored ions are directly reflected by their respective revolution times in first order. However, the inevitable momentum spread of secondary ions increases the peak widths in the measured spectra and consequently limits the achieved mass precision. In order to achieve a higher mass resolving power, the ring aperture was reduced to 60 mm by applying a mechanical slit system at the dispersive straight section. The momentum acceptance was reduced as well as better isochronous conditions were achieved. The results showed a significant improvement of the mass resolving power reaching $5.2 \times 10^{5}$, though at the cost of about 40\% ion loss.

YZ Phe: an active contact binary with variation of the O'Connell effect and orbital period change

YZ Phe is a very short-period contact binary (Sp.= $K2\,V$) with an orbital period of 0.2347 days near the short period limit (0.22 d). We present the complete light curves in $VRI$ bands, which photometric data were obtained with the 0.61-m telescope of PROMPT-8 at CTIO in Chile during June to October 2016 and August 2017. The photometric solutions were determined by using the W-D method and the results reveal that YZ Phe is a W-subtype shallow contact binary ($f\sim$ 10%, $q$ = 2.635 or $1/q$ = 0.379 for W subtype) with rotational motion of a large hot spot on the more massive component, showing a strong O'Connell effect with variation of maxima in photometric time series at period of 4.20 yr and stellar cycle at period of 1.28 yr. By compiling all available eclipse times, the result shows a long-term period decrease at a rate of $\mathrm{d}P/\mathrm{d}t = -2.64(\pm 0.02)\times 10^{-8}$ d $yr^{-1}$, superimposed on a cyclic variation ($A_3$ = 0.0081 days and $P_3$ = 40.76 years). This variation cannot be explained by Applegate mechanism. Thus, the cyclic change may be interpreted as light-travel time effect via the presence of a cool third body. Based on photometric solutions, the third light was detected with 2% contribution of total light in $V$ and $I$ bands. Those support the existence of a third body. For the long-term period decrease, it can be explained by mass transfer from the more massive component ($M_2 \sim 0.74 M_{\odot}$) to the less massive one ($M_1 \sim 0.28 M_{\odot}$) or plus AML via magnetic braking. With $1/q$ $<$ 0.4 and long-term period decrease, all suggest that YZ Phe is on the AML-controlled state and its fill-out factor will increase, as well as the system will evolve into a deeper normal contact binary.

Rotational Evolution of The Slowest Radio Pulsar PSR J0250+5854

We apply theoretical spin-down models of magnetospheric evolution and magnetic field decay to simulate the possible evolution of PSR J0250+5854, which is the slowest-spinning radio pulsar detected to date. Considering the alignment of inclination angle in a 3-D magnetosphere, it is possible that PSR J0250+5854 has a high magnetic field comparable with magnetars or/and high magnetic field pulsars, if a small inclination angle is considered. Our calculations show that similar long-period pulsars tend to have a relatively low period derivative in this case. In another case of magnetic field decay, calculations also show a possible connection between PSR J0250+5854 and high dipole-magnetic field magnetars. The evolutionary path indicates a relatively high spin-down rate for similar long-period pulsars.

Interplay between intra- and inter-nanowires dynamic dipolar interactions in the spin wave band structure of Py/Cu/Py nanowires

We have studied both experimentally and theoretically the reprogrammable spin wave band structure in Permalloy(10nm)/Cu(5nm)/Permalloy(30nm) nanowire arrays of width w=280 nm and inter-wire separation in the range from 80 to 280 nm. We found that, depending on the inter-wire separation, the anti-parallel configuration, where the magnetizations of the two Permalloy layers point in opposite directions, is stabilized over specific magnetic field ranges thus enabling us to directly compare the band structure with that of the parallel alignment. We show that collective spin waves of the Bloch type propagate through the arrays with different magnonic bandwidths as a consequence of the interplay between the intra- and inter-nanowire dynamic dipolar interactions. A detailed understanding, e.g. whether they have a stationary or propagating character, is achieved by considering the phase relation (in-phase or out-of-phase) between the dynamic magnetizations in the two ferromagnetic layers and their average value. This work opens the path to magnetic field-controlled reconfigurable layered magnonic crystals that can be used for future nanoscale magnon spintronic devices.

A distortion solution for the Bok telescope with four CCD chips

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is an imaging survey and uses the 2.3 m Bok telescope at Kitt Peak. In order to tap the astrometric potential of the Bok telescope and improve the astrometry of BASS, a distortion solution for the Bok telescope is made. In the past, we used a single lookup table to correct all the positional errors. However, this method can not be applied to the reduction of the observation for the Bok telescope where four CCD chips are equipped with. Then quite different from our previous method, two third-order polynomials were used to fit the lookup table. By using the polynomial Geometric Distortion (called GD hereafter) correction the astrometry of BASS is improved greatly. Moreover, an additional lookup table correction is found to be more effective to obtain a final GD. The results show that the positional measurement precision of the appropriate bright stars is estimated at about 20 mas and even better in each direction. Besides, the relative positions of the chips are measured. The change of the inter-chip gaps in horizontal or vertical is no more than 5 pixel between 2016 and 2017 and the change of the roll angle is no more than 0.1 degree.

Guaranteeing Recoverability via Partially Constrained Transaction Logs

Transaction logging is an essential constituent to guarantee the atomicity and durability in online transaction processing (OLTP) systems. It always has a considerable impact on performance, especially in an in-memory database system. Conventional implementations of logging rely heavily on a centralized design, which guarantees the correctness of recovery by enforcing a total order of all operations such as log sequence number (LSN) allocation, log persistence, transaction committing and recovering. This strict sequential constraint seriously limits the scalability and parallelism of transaction logging and recovery, especially in the multi-core hardware environment. In this paper, we define recoverability for transaction logging and demonstrate its correctness for crash recovery. Based on recoverability, we propose a recoverable logging scheme named Poplar, which enables scalable and parallel log processing by easing the restrictions. Its main advantages are that (1) Poplar enables the parallel log persistence on multiple storage devices; (2) it replaces the centralized LSN allocation by calculating a partially ordered sequence number in a distributed manner, which allows log records to only track RAW and WAW dependencies among transactions; (3) it only demands transactions with RAW dependencies to be committed in serial order; (4) Poplar can concurrently restore a consistent database state based on the partially constrained logs after a crash. Experimental results show that Poplar scales well with the increase of IO devices and outperforms other logging approaches on both SSDs and emulated non-volatile memory.

RW Dor: A G-type shallow contact binary with new orbital period investigation

New CCD photometric light curves of short period (P=0.285d) eclipsing binary RW Dor are presented. The observations performed with the PROMPT-8 robotic telescope at CTIO in Chile from March 2015 to March 2017. The other eclipse timings were obtained from the 2.15-m JS telescope at CASLEO, San Juan, Argentina in December 2011. By light-curve analysis, it is found that RW Dor is a W-type shallow contact binary with a fill-out factor $f \sim 11\%$ and high mass ratio $q \sim 1.587$ (1/q = 0.63), where the hotter component is the less massive one ($M_1 \sim 0.52M_{\odot}$ and $M_2 \sim 0.82M_{\odot}$). For orbital period investigation, the new fifteen eclipse times and those in previous published were compiled. Based on $O-C$ analysis with very weak evidence suggests that a long-term period decrease with a rate of $\mathrm{d}P/\mathrm{d}t = -9.61\times10^{-9}$ d $\textrm{yr}^{-1}$ is superimposed on a cyclic variation ($A_3$ = 0.0054 days and $P_3$ = 49.9 yrs). The long-term period decrease can be interpreted as mass transfer from the more massive component to the less massive one or combine with the angular momentum loss (AML) via magnetic braking. In addition, with the marginal contact phase, high mass ratio (1/q $>$ 0.4) and the long-term period decrease, all suggest that RW Dor is a newly formed contact binary via a Case A mass transfer and it will evolve into a deeper normal contact binary. If the cyclic change is correct, the light-travel time effect via the presence of a cool third body will be more plausible to explain for this.

TY Pup: a low-mass-ratio and deep contact binary as a progenitor candidate of luminous red novae

TY Pup is a well-known bright eclipsing binary in southern hemisphere with an orbital period of 0.8192 days. New light curves in $B, V, (RI)_C$ bands were obtained with the 0.61-m reflector robotic telescope (PROMPT-8) at CTIO in Chile from January to February 2015 and from March to April 2017. By analyzing those photometric data with the W-D method, it is found that TY Pup is a low-mass-ratio ($q \sim$ 0.184) and deep contact binary with a high fill-out factor ($84.3\,\%$). An investigation of all available times of minimum light including three new ones obtained with the 60-cm and the 1.0-m telescopes at Yunnan Observatories in China indicates that the period change of TY Pup is complex. An upward parabolic variation in the $O-C$ diagram is detected to be superimposed on a cyclic oscillation. The upward parabolic change reveals a long-term continuous increase in the orbital period at a rate of $\mathrm{d}P/\mathrm{d}t = 5.57(\pm 0.08)\times10^{-8}$ d $\textrm{yr}^{-1}$. The period increase can be explained by mass transfer from the less massive component ($M_2 \sim 0.3 M_{\odot}$) to the more massive one ($M_1 \sim 1.65 M_{\odot}$) and the mass ratio of the binary system will become more smaller. In this way, the binary will be merging when it meets the criterion that the orbital angular momentum is less than 3 times the total spin angular momentum, i.e., $J_{orb} < 3J_{rot}$. This suggests that the system will finally merge into a rapid-rotating single star and may produce a luminous red nova. The cyclic oscillation in the $O-C$ diagram can be interpreted by the light-travel time effect (LITE) via the presence of an additional companion.

Experimental Investigation of the Transition Energy $γ_t$ in the Isochronous Mode of the HIRFL-CSRe

The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) based on storage rings is a powerful technique for mass measurement of short-lived exotic nuclei. The transition energy $γ_t$ of the storage ring is a vital parameter of the IMS technique. It is difficult to measure the $γ_t$ and its relation to momentum spread or circulating length, especially to monitor the variation of $γ_t$ during experiments. An experimental investigation on the $γ_t$ has been performed for the IMS experiment at the Cooler Storage Ring of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSRe). With the velocity measured by two time-of-flight (TOF) detectors, the $γ_t$ as a function of orbital length can be determined. The influences of higher order magnetic field components on the $γ_t$ function were inferred for isochronous correction. This paper introduces and investigates the influence of dipole magnetic fields, quadrupole magnetic fields and sextupole magnetic fields on the $γ_t$ function. With the quadrupole magnets and sextupole magnets corrections, a mass resolution of 171332 (FWHM) and $σ(T)/T=1.34\times10^{-6}$ were reached, which shall be compared with 31319 (FWHM) and $σ(T)/T=7.35\times10^{-6}$ obtained without correction.

A method to measure the transition energy $γ_{t}$ of the isochronously tuned storage ring

The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) is a powerful technique developed in heavy-ion storage rings for measuring masses of very short-lived exotic nuclei. The IMS is based on the isochronous setting of the ring. One of the main parameters of this setting is the transition energy $γ_{t}$. %The transition energy $γ_{t}$ plays an important role in the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS). It has been a challenge to determine the $γ_{t}$ and especially to monitor the variation of $γ_{t}$ during experiments. In this paper we introduce a method to measure the $γ_{t}$ online during IMS experiments by using the acquired experimental data. Furthermore, since the storage ring has (in our context) a relatively large momentum acceptance, the variation of the $γ_{t}$ across the ring acceptance is a source of systematic uncertainty of measured masses. With the installation of two time-of-flight (TOF) detectors, the velocity of each stored ion and its revolution time are simultaneously available for the analysis. These quantities enabled us to determine the $γ_{t}$ as a function of orbital length in the ring. The presented method is especially important for future IMS experiments planned at the new-generation storage ring facilities FAIR in Germany and HIAF in China.

Isochronous mass measurements of $T_z=-1$ $fp$-shell nuclei from projectile fragmentation of $^{58}$Ni

Atomic masses of seven $T_z=-1$, $fp$-shell nuclei from $^{44}$V to $^{56}$Cu and two low-lying isomers, $^{44m}$V ($J^π=6^+$) and $^{52m}$Co ($J^π=2^+$), have been measured with relative precisions of $1-4\times 10^{-7}$ with Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) at CSRe. The masses of $^{56}$Cu, $^{52g,52m}$Co, and $^{44m}$V were measured for the first time in this experiment. The Mass Excesses ($ME^{\prime}$s) of $^{44}$V, $^{48}$Mn, $^{50}$Fe, and $^{54}$Ni are determined with an order of magnitude improved precision compared to the literature values. $^{52g,52m}$Co and $^{56}$Cu are found to be $370$~keV and $400$~keV more bound, respectively, while $^{44g,44m}$V are $\sim 300$~keV less bound than the extrapolations in the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME$^{\prime}$12). The masses of the four $T_z=-1/2$ nuclei $^{45}$V, $^{47}$Cr, $^{49}$Mn, and $^{51}$Fe are re-determined to be in agreement, within the experimental errors, with the recent JYFLTRAP measurements or with the previous IMS measurements in CSRe. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described, and the impact of the new $ME$ values on different aspects in nuclear structure are investigated and discussed.

Spin wave dynamics in artificial anti spin-ice systems: experimental and theoretical investigations

Reversed structures of artificial spin-ice systems, where elongated holes with elliptical shape (antidots) are arranged into a square array with two orthogonal sublattices, are referred to as anti-squared spin-ice. Using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and plane wave method calculations, we investigate the spin wave propagation perpendicular to the applied field direction for two 20 nm thick Permalloy nanostructures which differ by the presence of single and double elliptical antidots. For the spin waves propagation along the principal antidot lattice axis, the spectrum consists of flat bands separated by several frequency gaps which are the effect of spin wave amplitude confinement in the regions between antidots. Contrarily, for propagation direction at 45 degrees with respect to the antidot symmetry axis, straight and narrow channels of propagation are formed, leading to broadening of bands and closing of the magnonics gaps. Interestingly, in this case, extra magnonic band gaps occur due to the additional periodicity along this direction. The width and the position of these gaps depend on the presence of single or double antidots. In this context, we discuss possibilities for the tuning of spin wave spectra in anti-squared spin ice structures.

The Masses of the $T_z=-3/2$ Nuclei $^{27}$P and $^{29}$S

Isochronous mass spectrometry has been applied in the storage ring CSRe to measure the masses of the $T_z=-3/2$ nuclei $^{27}$P and $^{29}$S. The new mass excess value $ME$($^{29}$S) $=-3094(13)$~keV is 66(52)~keV larger than the result of the previous $^{32}$S($^3$He,$^{6}$He)$^{29}$S reaction measurement in 1973 and a factor of 3.8 more precise. The new result for $^{29}$S, together with those of the $T=3/2$ isobaric analog states (IAS) in $^{29}$P, $^{29}$Si, and $^{29}$Al, fit well into the quadratic form of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation IMME. The mass excess of $^{27}$P has been remeasured to be $ME(^{27}$P$)=-685(42)$ keV. By analyzing the linear and quadratic coefficients of the IMME in the $T_z=-3/2$ $sd$-shell nuclei, it was found that the ratio of the Coulomb radius parameters is $R\approx0.96$ and is nearly the same for all $T=3/2$ isospin multiplets. Such a nearly constant $R$-value, apparently valid for the entire light mass region with $A>9$, can be used to set stringent constraints on the isovector and isotensor components of the isospin non-conserving forces in theoretical calculations.

Electron acceleration by turbulent plasmoid reconnection

In space and astrophysical plasmas, like in planetary magnetospheres, as that of Mercury, energetic electrons are often found near current sheets (CSs), which hints at electron acceleration by magnetic reconnection. Unfortunately, electron acceleration by reconnection is not well understood, yet. In particular, acceleration by turbulent plasmoid reconnection. We have investigated electron acceleration by turbulent plasmoid reconnection, described by MHD simulations, via test particle calculations. In order to avoid resolving all relevant turbulence scales down to the dissipation scales, a mean-field turbulence model is used to describe the turbulence of sub-grid scales (SGS) and their effects via a turbulent electromotive force (EMF). The mean-field model describes the turbulent EMF as a function of the mean values of current density, vorticity, magnetic field as well as of the energy, cross-helicity and residual helicity of the turbulence. We found that, mainly around X-points of turbulent reconnection, strongly enhanced localized EMFs most efficiently accelerated electrons and caused the formation of power-law spectra. Magnetic-field-aligned EMFs, caused by the turbulence, dominate the electron acceleration process. Scaling the acceleration processes to parameters of the Hermean magnetotail, electron energies up to 60 keV can be reached by turbulent plasmoid reconnection through the thermal plasma.

Low-Complexity Linear Precoding for Secure Spatial Modulation

In this work, we investigate linear precoding for secure spatial modulation. With secure spatial modulation, the achievable secrecy rate does not have an easy-to-compute mathematical expression, and hence, has to be evaluated numerically, which leads to high complexity in the optimal precoder design. To address this issue, an accurate and analytical approximation of the secrecy rate is derived in this work. Using this approximation as the objective function, two low-complexity linear precoding methods based on gradient descend (GD) and successive convex approximation (SCA) are proposed. The GD-based method has much lower complexity but usually converges to a local optimum. On the other hand, the SCA-based method uses semi-definite relaxation to deal with the non-convexity in the precoder optimization problem and achieves near-optimal solution. Compared with the existing GD-based precoder design in the literature that directly uses the exact and numerically evaluated secrecy capacity as the objective function, the two proposed designs have significantly lower complexity. Our SCA-based design even achieves a higher secrecy rate than the existing GD-based design.
