Primal-Dual Damping algorithms for optimization

We propose an unconstrained optimization method based on the well-known primal-dual hybrid gradient (PDHG) algorithm. We first formulate the optimality condition of the unconstrained optimization problem as a saddle point problem. We then compute the minimizer by applying generalized primal-dual hybrid gradient algorithms. Theoretically, we demonstrate the continuous-time limit of the proposed algorithm forms a class of second-order differential equations, which contains and extends the heavy ball ODEs and Hessian-driven damping dynamics. Following the Lyapunov analysis of the ODE system, we prove the linear convergence of the algorithm for strongly convex functions. Experimentally, we showcase the advantage of algorithms on several convex and non-convex optimization problems by comparing the performance with other well-known algorithms, such as Nesterov's accelerated gradient methods. In particular, we demonstrate that our algorithm is efficient in training two-layer and convolution neural networks in supervised learning problems.

Suggestion of Coherent Radio Reflections from an Electron-Beam Induced Particle Cascade

Testbeam experiment 576 (T576) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory sought to make the first measurement of coherent radio reflections from the ionization produced in the wake of a high-energy particle shower. The >10 GeV electron beam at SLAC End Station A was directed into a large high-density polyethylene target to produce a shower analogous to that produced by an EeV neutrino interaction in ice. Continuous wave (CW) radio was transmitted into the target, and receiving antennas monitored for reflection of the transmitted signal from the ionization left in the wake of the shower. We detail the experiment and report on preliminary hints of a signal consistent with a radio reflection at a significance of 2.36$\sigma$. We recommend another test-beam measurement in order to verify the signal.

The Knee of the Cosmic Hydrogen and Helium Spectrum below 1 PeV Measured by ARGO-YBJ and a Cherenkov Telescope of LHAASO

The measurement of cosmic ray energy spectra, in particular for individual species, is an essential approach in finding their origin. Locating the "knees" of the spectra is an important part of the approach and has yet to be achieved. Here we report a measurement of the mixed Hydrogen and Helium spectrum using the combination of the ARGO-YBJ experiment and of a prototype Cherenkov telescope for the LHAASO experiment. A knee feature at 640+/-87 TeV, with a clear steepening of the spectrum, is observed. This gives fundamental inputs to galactic cosmic ray acceleration models.

Observation of Partially Suppressed Shot Noise in Hopping Conduction

We have observed shot noise in the hopping conduction of two dimensional carriers confined in a p-type SiGe quantum well at a temperature of 4K. Moreover, shot noise is suppressed relative to its ``classical'' value 2eI by an amount that depends on the length of the sample and carrier density, which was controlled by a gate voltage. We have found a suppression factor to the classical value of about one half for a 2 $μ$m long sample, and of one fifth for a 5 $μ$m sample. In each case, the factor decreased slightly as the density increased toward the insulator-metal transition. We explain these results in terms of the characteristic length ($\simeq 1μ$m in our case) of the inherent inhomogeneity of hopping transport.
