Scalable generation of heralded single photons via active feed-forward switching of a fiber delay line

Quasi-deterministic single-photon generation is a key requirement for many photonic quantum technologies. Photon sources based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are widely used for producing high-quality photons; however, the probabilistic nature of the process limits the generation of synchronized multi-photon states. Here, we demonstrate temporal synchronization of multiple photon-generation events using a free-space-fiber hybrid delay line with feed-forward control, enabling fast and efficient switching and scalable operation. Narrow-band, telecom-wavelength photons compatible for fiber transmission are heralded from a monolithic cavity SPDC source and synchronized across 20 time bins. This yields a sixfold enhancement in synchronized rates and enables multi-photon synchronization, with only a marginal increase of higher-order photon-number contributions.

Pure narrowband photon-pair generation in a monolithic cavity

Photonic quantum technologies require efficient sources of pure single photons. We present a heralded single-photon source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a monolithic cavity optimized for high spectral and spatial purity. The source heralds single photons at a wavelength of 1540 nm and a spectral bandwidth of 168 MHz, with a maximum heralding efficiency of 70% including all transmission and detection losses, while keeping the multi-photon contamination below 3%. The cavity enhancement predominantly generates photons into the central cavity mode, with a theoretical upper bound on the spectral purity of 79.4% arising from nonzero overlap with adjacent cavity modes. Spectral isolation of the central cavity mode with an etalon yields an increased measured spectral purity of (96.2 $\pm$ 2.7)%.

Strong-field chiral imaging with twisted photoelectrons

Ultrafast imaging of molecular chirality is a key step towards the dream of imaging and interpreting electronic dynamics in complex and biologically relevant molecules. Here, we propose a new ultrafast chiral phenomenon exploiting recent advances in electron optics allowing access to the orbital angular momentum of free electrons. We show that strong-field ionization of a chiral target with a few-cycle linearly polarized 800 nm laser pulse yields photoelectron vortices, whose chirality reveals that of the target, and we discuss the mechanism underlying this phenomenon. Our work opens new perspectives in recollision-based chiral imaging.
