Comments on higher-spin symmetries

The unconstrained frame-like formulation of an infinite tower of completely symmetric tensor gauge fields is reviewed and examined in the limit where the cosmological constant goes to zero. By partially fixing the gauge and solving the torsion constraints, the form of the gauge transformations in the unconstrained metric-like formulation are obtained till first order in a weak field expansion. The algebra of the corresponding gauge symmetries is shown to be equivalent, at this order and modulo (unphysical) gauge parameter redefinitions, to the Lie algebra of Hermitian differential operators on R^n, the restriction of which to the spin-two sector is the Lie algebra of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms.

Universal enveloping algebras of Lie-Rinehart algebras: crossed products, connections, and curvature

We extend a theorem, originally formulated by Blattner-Cohen-Montgomery for crossed products arising from Hopf algebras weakly acting on noncommutative algebras, to the realm of left Hopf algebroids. Our main motivation is an application to universal enveloping algebras of projective Lie-Rinehart algebras: for any given curved (resp. flat) connection, that is, a linear (resp. Lie-Rinehart) splitting of a Lie-Rinehart algebra extension, we provide a crossed (resp. smash) product decomposition of the associated universal enveloping algebra, and vice versa. As a geometric example, we describe the associative algebra generated by the invariant vector fields on the total space of a principal bundle as a crossed product of the algebra generated by the vertical ones and the algebra of differential operators on the base.

Snowmass White Paper: Higher Spin Gravity and Higher Spin Symmetry

Higher Spin Gravity refers to extensions of gravity including at least one field of spin greater than two. These extensions are expected to provide manageable models of quantum gravity thanks to the infinite-dimensional (higher spin) gauge symmetry constraining them. One of the key aspects of Higher Spin Gravity/Symmetry is the range and diversity of topics it embraces: (a) higher spin fields play a role in quantum gravity, AdS/CFT, string theory and are expected to have important consequences in cosmology and black hole physics; (b) higher spin symmetry finds applications in Conformal Field Theories, condensed matter systems and dualities therein; (c) these models often rely on tools developed in the study of the mathematical foundations of QFT or in pure mathematics: from deformation quantization and non-commutative geometry to conformal geometry, graded geometry (including BV-BRST quantization), and geometry of PDEs. Recent exciting applications also involve (d) modelling the coalescence of black hole binaries as scattering of massive higher spin particles.

Notes on higher-spin diffeomorphisms

Higher-spin diffeomorphisms are to higher-order differential operators what diffeomorphisms are to vector fields. Their rigorous definition is a challenging mathematical problem which might predate a better understanding of higher-spin symmetries and interactions. Several yes-go and no-go results on higher-spin diffeomorphisms are collected from the mathematical literature in order to propose a generalisation of the algebra of differential operators on which higher-spin diffeomorphisms are well-defined.

The unitary representations of the Poincare group in any spacetime dimension

An extensive group-theoretical treatment of linear relativistic field equations on Minkowski spacetime of arbitrary dimension D>2 is presented in these lecture notes. To start with, the one-to-one correspondence between linear relativistic field equations and unitary representations of the isometry group is reviewed. In turn, the method of induced representations reduces the problem of classifying the representations of the Poincare group ISO(D-1,1) to the classication of the representations of the stability subgroups only. Therefore, an exhaustive treatment of the two most important classes of unitary irreducible representations, corresponding to massive and massless particles (the latter class decomposing in turn into the ``helicity'' and the "infinite-spin" representations) may be performed via the well-known representation theory of the orthogonal groups O(n) (with D-4<n<D). Finally, covariant field equations are given for each unitary irreducible representation of the Poincare group with non-negative mass-squared. Tachyonic representations are also examined. All these steps are covered in many details and with examples. The present notes also include a self-contained review of the representation theory of the general linear and (in)homogeneous orthogonal groups in terms of Young diagrams.

Towards higher-spin AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ holography

We aim at formulating a higher-spin gravity theory around AdS$_2$ relevant for holography. As a first step, we investigate its kinematics by identifying the low-dimensional cousins of the standard higher-dimensional structures in higher-spin gravity such as the singleton, the higher-spin symmetry algebra, the higher-rank gauge and matter fields, etc. In particular, the higher-spin algebra is given here by $hs[λ]$ and parameterized by a real parameter $λ$. The singleton is defined to be a Verma module of the AdS$_2$ isometry subalgebra $so(2,1) \subset hs[λ]$ with conformal weight $Δ= \frac{1\pmλ}{2}\,$. On the one hand, the spectrum of local modes is determined by the Flato-Fronsdal theorem for the tensor product of two such singletons. It is given by an infinite tower of massive scalar fields in AdS$_2$ with ascending masses expressed in terms of $λ$. On the other hand, the higher-spin fields arising through the gauging of $hs[λ]$ algebra do not propagate local degrees of freedom. Our analysis of the spectrum suggests that AdS$_2$ higher-spin gravity is a theory of an infinite collection of massive scalars with fine-tuned masses, interacting with infinitely many topological gauge fields. Finally, we discuss the holographic CFT$_1$ duals of the kinematical structures identified in the bulk.

On BF-type higher-spin actions in two dimensions

We propose a non-abelian higher-spin theory in two dimensions for an infinite multiplet of massive scalar fields and infinitely many topological higher-spin gauge fields together with their dilaton-like partners. The spectrum includes local degrees of freedom although the field equations take the form of flatness and covariant constancy conditions because fields take values in a suitable extension of the infinite-dimensional higher-spin algebra $hs[λ]$. The corresponding action functional is of BF-type and generalizes the known topological higher-spin Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity.

Mixed-symmetry fields in de Sitter space: a group theoretical glance

We rederive the characters of all unitary irreducible representations of the $(d+1)$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime isometry algebra $\mathfrak{so}(1,d+1)$, and propose a dictionary between those representations and massive or (partially) massless fields on de Sitter spacetime. We propose a way of taking the flat limit of representations in (anti-) de Sitter spaces in terms of these characters, and conjecture the spectrum resulting from taking the flat limit of mixed-symmetry fields in de Sitter spacetime. We comment on a possible equivalent of the scalar singleton for the de Sitter (dS) spacetime.

Conformal Higher-Spin Gravity: Linearized Spectrum = Symmetry Algebra

The linearized spectrum and the algebra of global symmetries of conformal higher-spin gravity decompose into infinitely many representations of the conformal algebra. Their characters involve divergent sums over spins. We propose a suitable regularization adapted to their evaluation and observe that their characters are actually equal. This result holds in the case of type-A and type-B (and their higher-depth generalizations) theories and confirms previous observations on a remarkable rearrangement of dynamical degrees of freedom in conformal higher-spin gravity after regularization.

Twisted Flato-Fronsdal Theorem for Higher-Spin Algebras

We explore the relation between the singleton and adjoint modules of higher-spin algebras via so(2,d) characters. In order to relate the tensor product of the singleton and its dual to the adjoint module, we consider a heuristic formula involving symmetrization over the variables of the character. We show that our formula reproduces correctly the adjoint-module character for type-A (and its high-order extensions) and type-B higher-spin gravity theories in any dimension. Implications and subtleties of this symmetrization prescription in other models are discussed.

Higher Spin Extension of Fefferman-Graham Construction

Fefferman-Graham ambient construction can be formulated as $\mathfrak{sp}(2)$-algebra relations on three Hamiltonian constraint functions on ambient space. This formulation admits a simple extension that leads to higher-spin fields, both conformal gauge fields and usual massless fields on anti-de Sitter spacetime. For the bulk version of the system, we study its possible on-shell version which is formally consistent and reproduces conformal higher-spin fields on the boundary. Interpretation of the proposed on-shell version crucially depends on the choice of the functional class. Although the choice leading to fully interacting higher-spin theory in the bulk is not known, we demonstrate that the system has a vacuum solution describing general higher-spin flat backgrounds. Moreover, we propose a functional class such that the system describes propagation of higher-spin fields over any higher-spin flat background, reproducing all the structures that determine the known nonlinear higher-spin equations.

Continuous-spin field propagator and interaction with matter

Action principles for the single and double valued continuous-spin representations of the Poincare group have been recently proposed in a Segal-like formulation. We address three related issues: First, we explain how to obtain these actions directly from the Fronsdal-like and Fang-Fronsdal-like equations by solving the traceless constraints in Fourier space. Second, we introduce a current, similar to the one of Berends, Burgers and Van Dam, which is bilinear in a pair of scalar matter fields, to which the bosonic continuous-spin field can couple minimally. Third, we investigate the current exchange mediated by a continuous-spin particle obtained from this action principle and investigate whether it propagates the right degrees of freedom, and whether it reproduces the known result for massless higher-spin fields in the helicity limit.

Elementary particles with continuous spin

Classical results and recent developments on the theoretical description of elementary particles with "continuous" spin are reviewed. At free level, these fields are described by unitary irreducible representations of the isometry group (either Poincaré or anti de Sitter group) with an infinite number of physical degrees of freedom per spacetime point. Their basic group-theoretical and field-theoretical descriptions are reviewed in some details. We mention a list of open issues which are crucial to address for assessing their physical status and potential relevance.

Higher Spin Double Field Theory : A Proposal

We construct a double field theory coupled to the fields present in Vasiliev's equations. Employing the "semi-covariant" differential geometry, we spell a functional in which each term is completely covariant with respect to $\mathbf{O}(4,4)$ T-duality, doubled diffeomorphisms, $\mathbf{Spin}(1,3)$ local Lorentz symmetry and, separately, $\mathbf{HS}(4)$ higher spin gauge symmetry. We identify a minimal set of BPS-like conditions whose solutions automatically satisfy the full Euler-Lagrange equations. As such a solution, we derive a linear dilaton vacuum. With extra algebraic constraints further supplemented, the BPS-like conditions reduce to the bosonic Vasiliev equations.

Bulk quartic vertices from boundary four-point correlators

We present arguments which suggest that the bulk higher-spin gravity duals of weakly-coupled conformal field theories obey some refined notion of locality. In particular, we discuss the Mellin amplitude programme in this context. We focus on the $O(N)$ vector model and minimal higher-spin gravity as a paradigmatic example of such holographic dual pairs. We restrict ourselves to three- and four-point functions of scalar primary operators, but the qualitative conclusions are expected to hold for the generic case.

Notes on conformal invariance of gauge fields

In Lagrangian gauge systems, the vector space of global reducibility parameters forms a module under the Lie algebra of symmetries of the action. Since the classification of global reducibility parameters is generically easier than the classification of symmetries of the action, this fact can be used to constrain the latter when knowing the former. We apply this strategy and its generalization for the non-Lagrangian setting to the problem of conformal symmetry of various free higher spin gauge fields. This scheme allows one to show that, in terms of potentials, massless higher spin gauge fields in Minkowski space and partially-massless fields in (A)dS space are not conformal for spin strictly greater than one, while in terms of curvatures, maximal-depth partially-massless fields in four dimensions are also not conformal, unlike the closely related, but less constrained, maximal-depth Fradkin--Tseytlin fields.

A note about a pure spin-connection formulation of General Relativity and spin-2 duality in (A)dS

We investigate the problem of finding a pure spin-connection formulation of General Relativity with non-vanishing cosmological constant. We first revisit the problem at the linearised level and find that the pure spin-connection, quadratic Lagrangian, takes a form reminiscent to Weyl gravity, given by the square of a Weyl-like tensor. Upon Hodge dualisation, we show that the dual gauge field in (A)dS$_D$ transforms under $GL(D)$ in the same representation as a massive graviton in the flat spacetime of the same dimension. We give a detailed proof that the physical degrees of freedom indeed correspond to a massless graviton propagating around the (anti-) de Sitter background and finally speculate about a possible nonlinear pure-connection theory dual to General Relativity with cosmological constant.

Mixed-symmetry multiplets and higher-spin curvatures

We study the higher-derivative equations for gauge potentials of arbitrary mixed-symmetry type obtained by setting to zero the divergences of the corresponding curvature tensors. We show that they propagate the same reducible multiplets as the Maxwell-like second-order equations for gauge fields subject to constrained gauge transformations. As an additional output of our analysis, we provide a streamlined presentation of the Ricci-like case, where the traces of the same curvature tensors are set to zero, and we present a simple algebraic evaluation of the particle content associated with the Labastida and with the Maxwell-like second-order equations.
