Universal Hardy-Sobolev inequalities on hypersurfaces of Euclidean space

In this paper we study Hardy-Sobolev inequalities on hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, all of them involving a mean curvature term and having universal constants independent of the hypersurface. We first consider the celebrated Sobolev inequality of Michael-Simon and Allard, in our codimension one framework. Using their ideas, but simplifying their presentations, we give a quick and easy-to-read proof of the inequality. Next, we establish two new Hardy inequalities on hypersurfaces. One of them originates from an application to the regularity theory of stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations. The other one, which we prove by exploiting a "ground state" substitution, improves the Hardy inequality of Carron. With this same method, we also obtain an improved Hardy or Hardy-Poincaré inequality.

Calibrations and null-Lagrangians for nonlocal perimeters and an application to the viscosity theory

For nonnegative even kernels $K$, we consider the $K$-nonlocal perimeter functional acting on sets. Assuming the existence of a foliation of space made of solutions of the associated $K$-nonlocal mean curvature equation in an open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, we built a calibration for the nonlocal perimeter inside $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. The calibrating functional is a nonlocal null-Lagrangian. As a consequence, we conclude the minimality in $Ω$ of each leaf of the foliation. As an application, we prove the minimality of $K$-nonlocal minimal graphs and that they are the unique minimizers subject to their own exterior data. As a second application of the calibration, we give a simple proof of an important result from the seminal paper of Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Savin, stating that minimizers of the fractional perimeter are viscosity solutions.

A new proof of the boundedness results for stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations

We consider the class of stable solutions to semilinear equations $-Δu=f(u)$ in a bounded smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Since 2010 an interior a priori $L^\infty$ bound for stable solutions is known to hold in dimensions $n \leq 4$ for all $C^1$ nonlinearities $f$. In the radial case, the same is true for $n \leq 9$. Here we provide with a new, simpler, and unified proof of these results. It establishes, in addition, some new estimates in higher dimensions ---for instance $L^p$ bounds for every finite~$p$ in dimension 5. Since the mid nineties, the existence of an $L^\infty$ bound holding for all $C^1$ nonlinearities when $5 \leq n \leq 9$ was a challenging open problem. This has been recently solved by A. Figalli, X. Ros-Oton, J. Serra, and the author, for nonnegative nonlinearities, in a forthcoming paper.

A gradient estimate for nonlocal minimal graphs

We consider the class of measurable functions defined in all of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that give rise to a nonlocal minimal graph over a ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We establish that the gradient of any such function is bounded in the interior of the ball by a power of its oscillation. This estimate, together with previously known results, leads to the $C^\infty$ regularity of the function in the ball. While the smoothness of nonlocal minimal graphs was known for $n = 1, 2$ (but without a quantitative bound), in higher dimensions only their continuity had been established. To prove the gradient bound, we show that the normal to a nonlocal minimal graph is a supersolution of a truncated fractional Jacobi operator, for which we prove a weak Harnack inequality. To this end, we establish a new universal fractional Sobolev inequality on nonlocal minimal surfaces. Our estimate provides an extension to the fractional setting of the celebrated gradient bounds of Finn and of Bombieri, De Giorgi & Miranda for solutions of the classical mean curvature equation.

Stable solutions to some elliptic problems: minimal cones, the Allen-Cahn equation, and blow-up solutions

These notes record the lectures for the CIME Summer Course taught by the first author in Cetraro during the week of June 19-23, 2017. The notes contain the proofs of several results on the classification of stable solutions to some nonlinear elliptic equations. The results are crucial steps within the regularity theory of minimizers to such problems. We focus our attention on three different equations, emphasizing that the techniques and ideas in the three settings are quite similar. The first topic is the stability of minimal cones. We prove the minimality of the Simons cone in high dimensions, and we give almost all details in the proof of J. Simons on the flatness of stable minimal cones in low dimensions. Its semilinear analogue is a conjecture on the Allen-Cahn equation posed by E. De Giorgi in 1978. This is our second problem, for which we discuss some results, as well as an open problem in high dimensions on the saddle-shaped solution vanishing on the Simons cone. The third problem was raised by H. Brezis around 1996 and concerns the boundedness of stable solutions to reaction-diffusion equations in bounded domains. We present proofs on their regularity in low dimensions and discuss the main open problem in this topic. Moreover, we briefly comment on related results for harmonic maps, free boundary problems, and nonlocal minimal surfaces.

Stable $s$-minimal cones in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are flat for $s\sim 1$

We prove that half spaces are the only stable nonlocal $s$-minimal cones in $\mathbb{R}^3$, for $s\in(0,1)$ sufficiently close to $1$. This is the first classification result of stable $s$-minimal cones in dimension higher than two. Its proof can not rely on a compactness argument perturbing from $s=1$. In fact, our proof gives a quantifiable value for the required closeness of $s$ to $1$. We use the geometric formula for the second variation of the fractional $s$-perimeter, which involves a squared nonlocal second fundamental form, as well as the recent BV estimates for stable nonlocal minimal sets.

Antisymmetry of solutions for some weighted elliptic problems

This article concerns the antisymmetry, uniqueness, and monotonicity properties of solutions to some elliptic functionals involving weights and a double well potential. In the one-dimensional case, we introduce the continuous odd rearrangement of an increasing function and we show that it decreases the energy functional when the weights satisfy a certain convexity-type hypothesis. This leads to the antisymmetry or oddness of increasing solutions (and not only of minimizers). We also prove a uniqueness result (which leads to antisymmetry) where a convexity-type condition by Berestycki and Nirenberg on the weights is improved to a monotonicity condition. In addition, we provide with a large class of problems where antisymmetry does not hold. Finally, some rather partial extensions in higher dimensions are also given.

Delaunay hypersurfaces with constant nonlocal mean curvature

We study hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant nonlocal (or fractional) mean curvature. This is the equation associated to critical points of the fractional perimeter functional under a volume constraint. We establish the existence of a smooth branch of periodic cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$, all of them with the same constant nonlocal mean curvature, and bifurcating from a straight cylinder. These are Delaunay type cylinders in the nonlocal setting. The proof uses the Crandall-Rabinowitz theorem applied to a quasilinear type fractional elliptic equation.

Boundedness of stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations: a survey

This article is a survey on boundedness results for stable solutions to semilinear elliptic problems. For these solutions, we present the currently known $L^{\infty}$ estimates that hold for all nonlinearities. Such estimates are known to hold up to dimension 4. They are expected to be true also in dimensions 5 to 9, but this is still an open problem which has only been established in the radial case.

Near-sphere lattices with constant nonlocal mean curvature

We are concerned with unbounded sets of $\mathbb{R}^N$ whose boundary has constant nonlocal (or fractional) mean curvature, which we call CNMC sets. This is the equation associated to critical points of the fractional perimeter functional under a volume constraint. We construct CNMC sets which are the countable union of a certain bounded domain and all its translations through a periodic integer lattice of dimension $M\leq N$. Our CNMC sets form a $C^2$ branch emanating from the unit ball alone and where the parameter in the branch is essentially the distance to the closest lattice point. Thus, the new translated near-balls (or near-spheres) appear from infinity. We find their exact asymptotic shape as the parameter tends to infinity.

An extension problem for sums of fractional Laplacians and 1-D symmetry of phase transitions

We study nonlinear elliptic equations for operators corresponding to non-stable Lévy diffusions. We include a sum of fractional Laplacians of different orders. Such operators are infinitesimal generators of non-stable (i.e., non self-similar) Lévy processes. We establish the regularity of solutions, as well as sharp energy estimates. As a consequence, we prove a 1-D symmetry result for monotone solutions to Allen-Cahn type equations with a non-stable Lévy diffusion. These operators may still be realized as local operators using a system of PDEs ---in the spirit of the extension problem of Caffarelli and Silvestre.

Isoperimetric, Sobolev, and eigenvalue inequalities via the Alexandroff-Bakelman-Pucci method: a survey

We present the proof of several inequalities using the technique introduced by Alexandroff, Bakelman, and Pucci to establish their ABP estimate. First, we give a new and simple proof of a lower bound of Berestycki, Nirenberg, and Varadhan concerning the principal eigenvalue of an elliptic operator with bounded measurable coefficients. The rest of the paper is a survey on the proofs of several isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities using the ABP technique. This includes new proofs of the classical isoperimetric inequality, the Wulff isoperimetric inequality, and the Lions-Pacella isoperimetric inequality in convex cones. For this last inequality, the new proof was recently found by the author, Xavier Ros-Oton, and Joaquim Serra in a work where we also prove new Sobolev inequalities with weights which came up studying an open question raised by Haim Brezis.

Sobolev and isoperimetric inequalities with monomial weights

We consider the monomial weight $|x_1|^{A_1}...|x_n|^{A_n}$ in $\mathbb R^n$, where $A_i\geq0$ is a real number for each $i=1,...,n$, and establish Sobolev, isoperimetric, Morrey, and Trudinger inequalities involving this weight. They are the analogue of the classical ones with the Lebesgue measure $dx$ replaced by $|x_1|^{A_1}...|x_n|^{A_n}dx$, and they contain the best or critical exponent (which depends on $A_1$, ..., $A_n$). More importantly, for the Sobolev and isoperimetric inequalities, we obtain the best constant and extremal functions. When $A_i$ are nonnegative \textit{integers}, these inequalities are exactly the classical ones in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^D$ (with no weight) when written for axially symmetric functions and domains in $\mathbb R^D=\mathbb R^{A_1+1}\times...\times\mathbb R^{A_n+1}$.

Curves and surfaces with constant nonlocal mean curvature: meeting Alexandrov and Delaunay

We are concerned with hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant nonlocal (or fractional) mean curvature. This is the equation associated to critical points of the fractional perimeter under a volume constraint. Our results are twofold. First we prove the nonlocal analogue of the Alexandrov result characterizing spheres as the only closed embedded hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant mean curvature. Here we use the moving planes method. Our second result establishes the existence of periodic bands or "cylinders" in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with constant nonlocal mean curvature and bifurcating from a straight band. These are Delaunay type bands in the nonlocal setting. Here we use a Lyapunov-Schmidt procedure for a quasilinear type fractional elliptic equation.

A priori estimates for semistable solutions of semilinear elliptic equations

We consider positive semistable solutions $u$ of $Lu+f(u)=0$ with zero Dirichlet boundary condition, where $L$ is a uniformly elliptic operator and $f\in C^2$ is a positive, nondecreasing, and convex nonlinearity which is superlinear at infinity. Under these assumptions, the boundedness of all semistable solutions is expected up to dimension $n\leq 9$, but only established for $n\leq 4$. In this paper we prove the $L^\infty$ bound up to dimension $n=5$ under the following further assumption on $f$: for every $\varepsilon>0$, there exist $T=T(\varepsilon)$ and $C=C(\varepsilon)$ such that $f'(t)\leq Cf(t)^{1+\varepsilon}$ for all $t>T$. This bound follows from a $L^p$-estimate for $f'(u)$ for every $p<3$ and $n\geq 2$. Under a similar but more restrictive assumption on $f$, we also prove the $L^\infty$ estimate when $n=6$. We remark that our results do not assume any lower bound on $f'$.

Traveling wave solutions in a half-space for boundary reactions

We prove the existence and uniqueness of a traveling front and of its speed for the homogeneous heat equation in the half-plane with a Neumann boundary reaction term of non-balanced bistable type or of combustion type. We also establish the monotonicity of the front and, in the bistable case, its behavior at infinity. In contrast with the classical bistable interior reaction model, its behavior at the side of the invading state is of power type, while at the side of the invaded state its decay is exponential. These decay results rely on the construction of a family of explicit bistable traveling fronts. Our existence results are obtained via a variational method, while the uniqueness of the speed and of the front rely on a comparison principle and the sliding method.

Sharp isoperimetric inequalities via the ABP method

We prove some old and new isoperimetric inequalities with the best constant using the ABP method applied to an appropriate linear Neumann problem. More precisely, we obtain a new family of sharp isoperimetric inequalities with weights (also called densities) in open convex cones of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our result applies to all nonnegative homogeneous weights satisfying a concavity condition in the cone. Remarkably, Euclidean balls centered at the origin (intersected with the cone) minimize the weighted isoperimetric quotient, even if all our weights are nonradial ---except for the constant ones. We also study the anisotropic isoperimetric problem in convex cones for the same class of weights. We prove that the Wulff shape (intersected with the cone) minimizes the anisotropic weighted perimeter under the weighted volume constraint. As a particular case of our results, we give new proofs of two classical results: the Wulff inequality and the isoperimetric inequality in convex cones of Lions and Pacella.

Euclidean balls solve some isoperimetric problems with nonradial weights

In this note we present the solution of some isoperimetric problems in open convex cones of $\R^n$ in which perimeter and volume are measured with respect to certain nonradial weights. Surprisingly, Euclidean balls centered at the origin (intersected with the convex cone) minimize the isoperimetric quotient. Our result applies to all nonnegative homogeneous weights satisfying a concavity condition in the cone. When the weight is constant, the result was established by Lions and Pacella in 1990.
