Mersenne numbers and the doubling map

We study the connection between the Mersenne numbers $M(n) = 2^n-1$ and the dynamics of the angle-doubling map. Within this framework, we develop an algorithm to compute divisors of Mersenne numbers without explicitly evaluating $M(n)$. Determining whether $M(n)$ is prime for a prime $n$ (and knowing if there are infinitely many of them), is a central problem, traditionally addressed with the help of the Lucas-Lehmer test. We provide an alternative approach based on dynamical methods. As an application, we prove that $M(2{,}199{,}023{,}254{,}451)$ (with approximately $6.6 \times 10^{11}$ digits) is composite by exhibiting a non-trivial divisor.

Boundedness and simple connectivity of the basins of attraction for some numerical methods

In this paper we study the dynamics of Halley's and Traub's root-finding algorithms applied to a symmetric family of polynomials of degree $d+1\geq 3$. We discuss the (un)boundedness and simple connectivity of the immediate basins of attraction of the fixed points associated to the roots of the polynomials. In particular, we show the existence of polynomials for which the immediate basin of attraction of a root is bounded under Halley's method

On the basins of attraction of a one-dimensional family of root finding algorithms: from Newton to Traub

In this paper we study the dynamics of damped Traub's methods $T_\delta$ when applied to polynomials. The family of damped Traub's methods consists of root finding algorithms which contain both Newton's ($\delta=0$) and Traub's method ($\delta=1$). Our goal is to obtain several topological properties of the basins of attraction of the roots of a polynomial $p$ under $T_1$, which are used to determine a (universal) set of initial conditions for which convergence to all roots of $p$ can be guaranteed. We also numerically explore the global properties of the dynamical plane for $T_\delta$ to better understand the connection between Newton's method and Traub's method.

On the basin of attraction of a critical three-cycle of a model for the secant map

We consider the secant method $S_p$ applied to a real polynomial $p$ of degree $d+1$ as a discrete dynamical system on $\mathbb R^2$. If the polynomial $p$ has a local extremum at a point $\alpha$ then the discrete dynamical system generated by the iterates of the secant map exhibits a critical periodic orbit of period 3 or three-cycle at the point $(\alpha,\alpha)$. We propose a simple model map $T_{a,d}$ having a unique fixed point at the origin which encodes the dynamical behaviour of $S_p^3$ at the critical three-cycle. The main goal of the paper is to describe the geometry and topology of the basin of attraction of the origin of $T_{a,d}$ as well as its boundary. Our results concern global, rather than local, dynamical behaviour. They include that the boundary of the basin of attraction is the stable manifold of a fixed point or contains the stable manifold of a two-cycle, depending on the values of the parameters of $d$ (even or odd) and $a\in \mathbb R$ (positive or negative).

Chaotic dynamics at the boundary of a basin of attraction via non-transversal intersections for a non-global smooth diffeomorphism

In this paper we give analytic proofs of the existence of transversal homoclinic points for a family of non-globally smooth diffeomorphisms having the origin as a fixed point which come out as a truncated map governing the local dynamics near a critical period three cycle associated to the Secant map. Using Moser's version of Birkhoff-Smale's Theorem, we prove that the boundary of the basin of attraction of the origin contains a Cantor-like invariant subset such that the restricted dynamics to it is conjugate to the full shift of $N$-symbols for any integer $N\ge 2$ or infinity.

Local connectivity of boundaries of tame Fatou components of meromorphic functions

We prove local connectivity of the boundaries of invariant simply connected attracting basins for a class of transcendental meromorphic maps. The maps within this class need not be geometrically finite or in class $\mathcal B$, and the boundaries of the basins (possibly unbounded) are allowed to contain an infinite number of post-singular values, as well as the essential singularity at infinity. A basic assumption is that the unbounded parts of the basins are contained in regions which we call `repelling petals at infinity', where the map exhibits a kind of `parabolic' behaviour. In particular, our results apply to a wide class of Newton's methods for transcendental entire maps. As an application, we prove local connectivity of the Julia set of Newton's method for $\sin z$, providing the first non-trivial example of a locally connected Julia set of a transcendental map outside class $\mathcal B$, with an infinite number of unbounded Fatou components.

Achievable connectivities of Fatou components for a family of singular perturbations

In this paper we study the connectivity of Fatou components for maps in a large family of singular perturbations. We prove that, for some parameters inside the family, the dynamical planes for the corresponding maps present Fatou components of arbitrarily large connectivity and we determine precisely these connectivities. In particular, these results extend the ones obtained in [Can17, Can18].

Topological properties of the immediate basins of attraction for the secant method

We study the discrete dynamical system defined on a subset of $R^2$ given by the iterates of the secant method applied to a real polynomial $p$. Each simple real root $\alpha$ of $p$ has associated its basin of attraction $\mathcal A(\alpha)$ formed by the set of points converging towards the fixed point $(\alpha,\alpha)$ of $S$. We denote by $\mathcal A^*(\alpha)$ its immediate basin of attraction, that is, the connected component of $\mathcal A(\alpha)$ which contains $(\alpha,\alpha)$. We focus on some topological properties of $\mathcal A^*(\alpha)$, when $\alpha$ is an internal real root of $p$. More precisely, we show the existence of a 4-cycle in $\partial \mathcal A^*(\alpha)$ and we give conditions on $p$ to guarantee the simple connectivity of $\mathcal A^*(\alpha)$.

The secant map applied to a real polynomial with multiple roots

We investigate the plane dynamical system given by the secant map applied to a polynomial $p$ having at least one multiple root of multiplicity $d>1$. We prove that the local dynamics around the fixed points associated to the roots of $p$ depend on the parity of $d$.

Global dynamics of the real secant method

We investigate the root finding algorithm given by the secant method applied to a real polynomial $p$ as a discrete dynamical system defined on $\mathbb R^2$. We study the shape and distribution of the basins of attraction associated to the roots of $p$, and we also show the existence of other stable dynamics that might affect the efficiency of the algorithm. Finally we extend the secant map to the punctured torus $\mathbb T^2_{\infty}$ which allow us to better understand the dynamics of the secant method near $\infty$ and facilitate the use of the secant map as a method to find all roots of a polynomial.

Singularities of inner functions associated with hyperbolic maps

Let $f$ be a function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class $\mathcal{B}$, and let $U$ be an unbounded, forward invariant Fatou component of $f$. We relate the number of singularities of an inner function associated to $f|_U$ with the number of tracts of $f$. In particular, we show that if $f$ lies in either of two large classes of functions in $\mathcal{B}$, and also has finitely many tracts, then the number of singularities of an associated inner function is at most equal to the number of tracts of $f$. Our results imply that for hyperbolic functions of finite order there is an upper bound -- related to the order -- on the number of singularities of an associated inner function.

Univalent Wandering Domains in the Eremenko-Lyubich Class

We use the folding theorem of Bishop to construct an entire function $f$ in class $B$ and a wandering domain $U$ of $f$ such that $f$ restricted to $f^n(U)$ is univalent, for all $n \geq 0$. The components of the wandering orbit are bounded and surrounded by the postcritical set.

Fatou components and singularities of meromorphic functions

We prove several results concerning the relative position of points in the postsingular set $P(f)$ of a meromorphic map $f$ and the boundary of a Baker domain or the successive iterates of a wandering component. For Baker domains we answer a question of Mihaljevi\'c-Brandt and Rempe-Gillen. For wandering domains we show that if the iterates $U_n$ of such a domain have uniformly bounded diameter, then there exists a sequence of postsingular values $p_n$ such that ${\rm dist}(p_n,\partial U_n)\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$. We also prove that if $U_n \cap P(f)=\emptyset$ and the postsingular set of $f$ lies at a positive distance from the Julia set (in $\mathbb C$) then any sequence of iterates of wandering domains must contain arbitrarily large disks. This allows to exclude the existence of wandering domains for some meromorphic maps with infinitely many poles and unbounded set of singular values.

Escaping points in the boundaries of Baker domains

We study the dynamical behaviour of points in the boundaries of simply connected invariant Baker domains $U$ of meromorphic maps $f$ with a finite degree on $U$. We prove that if $f|_U$ is of hyperbolic or simply parabolic type, then almost every point in the boundary of $U$ with respect to harmonic measure escapes to infinity under iteration. On the contrary, if $f|_U$ is of doubly parabolic type, then almost every point in the boundary of $U$ with respect to harmonic measure has dense forward trajectory in the boundary of $U$, in particular the set of escaping points in the boundary of $U$ has harmonic measure zero. We also present some extensions of the results to the case when $f$ has infinite degree on $U$, including classical Fatou example.

Connectivity of Julia sets of Newton maps: A unified approach

In this paper we give a unified proof of the fact that the Julia set of Newton's method applied to a holomorphic function of the complex plane (a polynomial of degree large than $1$ or an entire transcendental function) is connected. The result was recently completed by the authors' previous work, as a consequence of a more general theorem whose proof spreads among many papers, which consider separately a number of particular cases for rational and transcendental maps, and use a variety of techniques. In this note we present a unified, direct and reasonably self-contained proof which works for all situations alike.

Accesses to infinity from Fatou components

We study the boundary behaviour of a meromorphic map $f: \mathbb C \to \widehat{\mathbb C}$ on its invariant simply connected Fatou component $U$. To this aim, we develop the theory of accesses to boundary points of $U$ and their relation to the dynamics of $f$. In particular, we establish a correspondence between invariant accesses from $U$ to infinity or weakly repelling points of $f$ and boundary fixed points of the associated inner function on the unit disc. We apply our results to describe the accesses to infinity from invariant Fatou components of the Newton maps.

Wandering domains for composition of entire functions

C. Bishop has constructed an example of an entire function f in Eremenko-Lyubich class with at least two grand orbits of oscillating wandering domains. In this paper we show that his example has exactly two such orbits, that is, f has no unexpected wandering domains. We apply this result to the classical problem of relating the Julia sets of composite functions with the Julia set of its members. More precisely, we show the existence of two entire maps f and g in Eremenko-Lyubich class such that the Fatou set of f compose with g has a wandering domain, while all Fatou components of f or g are preperiodic. This complements a result of A. Singh and results of W. Bergweiler and A. Hinkkanen related to this problem.

Absorbing sets and Baker domains for holomorphic maps

We consider holomorphic maps $f: U \to U$ for a hyperbolic domain $U$ in the complex plane, such that the iterates of $f$ converge to a boundary point $\zeta$ of $U$. By a previous result of the authors, for such maps there exist nice absorbing domains $W \subset U$. In this paper we show that $W$ can be chosen to be simply connected, if $f$ has parabolic I type in the sense of the Baker--Pommerenke--Cowen classification of its lift by a universal covering (and $\zeta$ is not an isolated boundary point of $U$). Moreover, we provide counterexamples for other types of the map $f$ and give an exact characterization of parabolic I type in terms of the dynamical behaviour of $f$.
