Emergence of a non trivial fluctuating phase in the XY model on regular networks

We study an XY-rotor model on regular one dimensional lattices by varying the number of neighbours. The parameter $2\geγ\ge1$ is defined. $γ=2$ corresponds to mean field and $γ=1$ to nearest neighbours coupling. We find that for $γ<1.5$ the system does not exhibit a phase transition, while for $γ> 1.5$ the mean field second order transition is recovered. For the critical value $γ=γ_c=1.5$, the systems can be in a non trivial fluctuating phase for whichthe magnetisation shows important fluctuations in a given temperature range, implying an infinite susceptibility. For all values of $γ$ the magnetisation is computed analytically in the low temperatures range and the magnetised versus non-magnetised state which depends on the value of $γ$ is recovered, confirming the critical value $γ_{c}=1.5$.

Offsprings of a point vortex

The distribution engendered by successive splitting of one point vortex are considered. The process of splitting a vortex in three using a reverse three-point vortex collapse course is analysed in great details and shown to be dissipative. A simple process of successive splitting is then defined and the resulting vorticity distribution and vortex populations are analysed.

Statistical theory of quasi stationary states beyond the single water-bag case study

An analytical solution for the out-of-equilibrium quasi-stationary states of the paradigmatic Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model can be obtained from a maximum entropy principle. The theory has been so far tested with reference to a specific class of initial condition, the so called (single-level) water-bag type. In this paper a step forward is taken by considering an arbitrary number of overlapping water bags. The theory is benchmarked to direct microcanonical simulations performed for the case of a two-levels water-bag. The comparison is shown to return an excellent agreement.

Existence of Quasi-stationary states at the Long Range threshold

In this paper the lifetime of quasi-stationary states (QSS) in the $α-$HMF model are investigated at the long range threshold ($α=1$). It is found that QSS exist and have a diverging lifetime $τ(N)$ with system size which scales as $\mbox{\ensuremathτ(N)\ensuremath{\sim}}\log N$, which contrast to the exhibited power law for $α<1$ and the observed finite lifetime for $α>1$. Another feature of the long range nature of the system beyond the threshold ($α>1$) namely a phase transition is displayed for $α=1.5$. The definition of a long range system is as well discussed.

Stationary states and fractional dynamics in systems with long range interactions

Dynamics of many-body Hamiltonian systems with long range interactions is studied, in the context of the so called $α-$HMF model. Building on the analogy with the related mean field model, we construct stationary states of the $α-$HMF model for which the spatial organization satisfies a fractional equation. At variance, the microscopic dynamics turns out to be regular and explicitly known. As a consequence, dynamical regularity is achieved at the price of strong spatial complexity, namely a microscopic inhomogeneity which locally displays scale invariance.

Out of Equilibrium Solutions in the $XY$-Hamiltonian Mean Field model

Out of equilibrium magnetised solutions of the $XY$-Hamiltonian Mean Field ($XY$-HMF) model are build using an ensemble of integrable uncoupled pendula. Using these solutions we display an out-of equilibrium phase transition using a specific reduced set of the magnetised solutions.

Directed transport in a spatially periodic potential under periodic non-biased forcing

Transport of a particle in a spatially periodic harmonic potential under the influence of a slowly time-dependent unbiased periodic external force is studied. The equations of motion are the same as in the problem of a slowly forced nonlinear pendulum. Using methods of the adiabatic perturbation theory we show that for a periodic external force of general kind the system demonstrates directed (ratchet) transport in the chaotic domain on very long time intervals and obtain a formula for the average velocity of this transport. Two cases are studied: the case of the external force of small amplitude, and the case of the external force with amplitude of order one. The obtained formulas can also be used in case of a non-harmonic periodic potential.

Abundance of regular orbits and out-of-equilibrium phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit for long-range systems

We investigate the dynamics of many-body long-range interacting systems, taking the Hamiltonian Mean Field model as a case study. We show that an abundance of regular trajectories, associated with invariant tori of the single-particle dynamics, exists. The presence of such tori provides a dynamical interpretation of the emergence of long-lasting out-of-equilibrium regimes observed generically in long-range systems. This is alternative to a previous statistical mechanics approach to such phenomena which was based on a maximum entropy principle. Previously detected out-of-equilibrium phase transitions are also reinterpreted within this framework.

Targeted mixing in an array of alternating vortices

Transport and mixing properties of passive particles advected by an array of vortices are investigated. Starting from the integrable case, it is shown that a special class of perturbations allows one to preserve separatrices which act as effective transport barriers, while triggering chaotic advection. In this setting, mixing within the two dynamical barriers is enhanced while long range transport is prevented. A numerical analysis of mixing properties depending on parameter values is performed; regions for which optimal mixing is achieved are proposed. Robustness of the targeted mixing properties regarding errors in the applied perturbation are considered, as well as slip/no-slip boundary conditions for the flow.

From chaos of lines to Lagrangian structures in flux conservative fields

A numerical method is proposed in order to track field lines of three-dimensional divergence free fields. Field lines are computed by a locally valid Hamiltonian mapping, which is computed using a symplectic scheme. The method is theoretically valid everywhere but at points where the field is null or infinite. For any three dimensional flux conservative field for which problematic points are sufficiently sparse, a systematic procedure is proposed and implemented. Construction of field lines is achieved by means of tracers and the introduction of various Hamiltonians adapted to the "geometrical state" each line or tracer is. The states are artificially defined by an a priori given frame of reference and Cartesian coordinates, and refer to a Hamiltonian which is locally valid at the time step to be computed. This procedure ensures the preservation of the volume (flux condition) during the iteration. This method is first tested with an ABC-type flow. Its benefits when compared to typical Runge-Kutta scheme are demonstrated. Potential use of the method to exhibit "coherent" Lagrangian structures in a chaotic setting is shown. An illustration to the computation of magnetic field lines resulting from a three-dimensional MHD simulation is also provided.

Control of chaotic advection

A method of chaos reduction for Hamiltonian systems is applied to control chaotic advection. By adding a small and simple term to the stream function of the system, the construction of invariant tori has a stabilization effect in the sense that these tori act as barriers to diffusion in phase space and the controlled Hamiltonian system exhibits a more regular behaviour.

Stabilizing the intensity of a wave amplified by a beam of particles

The intensity of an electromagnetic wave interacting self-consistently with a beam of charged particles as in a free electron laser, displays large oscillations due to an aggregate of particles, called the macro-particle. In this article, we propose a strategy to stabilize the intensity by re-shaping the macro-particle. This strategy involves the study of the linear stability (using the residue method) of selected periodic orbits of a mean-field model. As parameters of an additional perturbation are varied, bifurcations occur in the system which have drastic effect on the modification of the self-consistent dynamics, and in particular, of the macro-particle. We show how to obtain an appropriate tuning of the parameters which is able to strongly decrease the oscillations of the intensity without reducing its mean-value.

Evidence of fractional transport in point-vortex flow

Advection properties of passive particles in flows generated by point vortices are considered. Transport properties are anomalous with characteristic transport exponent $μ\sim 1.5$. This behavior is linked back to the presence of coherent fractal structures within the flow. A fractional kinetic analysis allows to link the characteristic transport exponent $μ$ to the trapping time exponent $γ=1+μ$. The quantitative agreement is found for different systems of vortices investigated and a clear signature is obtained of the fractional nature of transport in these flows.

Chaotic Jets

The problem of characterizing the origin of the non-Gaussian properties of transport resulting from Hamiltonian dynamics is addressed. For this purpose the notion of chaotic jet is revisited and leads to the definition of a diagnostic able to capture some singular properties of the dynamics. This diagnostic is applied successfully to the problem of advection of passive tracers in a flow generated by point vortices. We present and discuss this diagnostic as a result of which clues on the origin of anomalous transport in these systems emerge.

Anomalous transport in Charney-Hasegawa-Mima flows

Transport properties of particles evolving in a system governed by the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima equation are investigated. Transport is found to be anomalous with a non linear evolution of the second moments with time. The origin of this anomaly is traced back to the presence of chaotic jets within the flow. All characteristic transport exponents have a similar value around $μ=1.75$, which is also the one found for simple point vortex flows in the literature, indicating some kind of universality. Moreover the law $γ=μ+1$ linking the trapping time exponent within jets to the transport exponent is confirmed and an accumulation towards zero of the spectrum of finite time Lyapunov exponent is observed. The localization of a jet is performed, and its structure is analyzed. It is clearly shown that despite a regular coarse grained picture of the jet, motion within the jet appears as chaotic but chaos is bounded on successive small scales.

Reducing or enhancing chaos using periodic orbits

A method to reduce or enhance chaos in Hamiltonian flows with two degrees of freedom is discussed. This method is based on finding a suitable perturbation of the system such that the stability of a set of periodic orbits changes (local bifurcations). Depending on the values of the residues, reflecting their linear stability properties, a set of invariant tori is destroyed or created in the neighborhood of the chosen periodic orbits. An application on a paradigmatic system, a forced pendulum, illustrates the method.

Chaotic advection and targeted mixing

The advection of passive tracers in an oscillating vortex chain is investigated. It is shown that by adding a suitable perturbation to the ideal flow, the induced chaotic advection exhibits two remarkable properties compared with a generic perturbation : Particles remain trapped within a specific domain bounded by two oscillating barriers (suppression of chaotic transport along the channel), and the stochastic sea seems to cover the whole domain (enhancement of mixing within the rolls).
