Absorption and Injection Models for Open Time-Dependent Quantum Systems

In the time-dependent simulation of pure states dealing with transport in open quantum systems, the initial state is located outside of the active region of interest. Using the superposition principle and the analytical knowledge of the free time-evolution of such state outside the active region, together with absorbing layers and remapping, a model for a very significant reduction of the computational burden associated to the numerical simulation of open time-dependent quantum systems is presented. The model is specially suited to study (many-particle and high-frequency effects) quantum transport, but it can also be applied to any other research field where the initial time-dependent pure state is located outside of the active region. From numerical simulations of open quantum systems described by the (effective mass) Schrödinger and (atomistic) tight-binding equations, a reduction of the computational burden of about two orders of magnitude for each spatial dimension of the domain with a negligible error is presented.

Solving the transport without transit quantum paradox of the spatial adiabatic passage technique

We discuss and solve the transport without transit quantum paradox recently introduced in the context of the adiabatic transport of a single particle or a Bose--Einstein condensate between the two extreme traps of a triple-well potential. To this aim, we address the corresponding quantum dynamics in terms of Bohmian trajectories and show that transport always implies transit through the middle well, in full agreement with the quantum continuity equation. This adiabatic quantum transport presents a very counterintuitive effect: by slowing down the total time duration of the transport process, ultra-high Bohmian velocities are achieved such that, in the limit of perfect adiabaticity, relativistic corrections are needed to properly address the transfer process while avoiding superluminal matter wave propagation.

Exchange Interaction Effects on the Conductance of Quantum Wires

The effect of exchange interaction on the two-terminal conductance of fully ballistic samples is studied using a many-particle wave packet formalism. The approach shows that the puzzling nonuniversal conductance quantization can be explained as a fermion exchange interaction effect. The Landauer conductance step Go is obtained when two-fermion interaction is considered. Reductions of Go are due to a many-particle exchange interaction effect. For ballistic GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wires longer than 1 um, a conductance step reduction is obtained in agreement with experimental results.

Description of Quantum Beams Using a Stationary Incoherent Superposition of Wave Packets

An original entity is defined to study quantum beams of conserved particles. The beam is described as a Stationary Incoherent Superposition of Wave packets (SISOW). Mean values are time-independent confirming that the SISOW describes a stationary flux of particles. The SISOW is a general entity that contains the Hamiltonian eigenstates as a particular limit. The decomposition of the SISOW into wave packets provides intrinsic dynamic information which is not accessible from Hamiltonian eigenstates. The SISOW provides and adequate framework to study mesoscopic systems
