Obstacle problems for nonlocal operators with singular kernels

In this paper we establish optimal regularity estimates and smoothness of free boundaries for nonlocal obstacle problems governed by a very general class of integro-differential operators with possibly singular kernels. More precisely, in contrast to all previous known results, we are able to treat nonlocal operators whose kernels are not necessarily pointwise comparable to the one of the fractional Laplacian. Such operators might be very anisotropic in the sense that they "do not see" certain directions at all, or might have substantial oscillatory behavior, causing the nonlocal Harnack inequality to fail.

Optimal regularity for the fully nonlinear thin obstacle problem

In this work we establish the optimal regularity for solutions to the fully nonlinear thin obstacle problem. In particular, we show the existence of an optimal exponent $α_F$ such that $u$ is $C^{1,α_F}$ on either side of the obstacle. In order to do that, we prove the uniqueness of blow-ups at regular points, as well as an expansion for the solution there. Finally, we also prove that if the operator is rotationally invariant, then $α_F\ge \frac12$ and the solution is always $C^{1,1/2}$.

Regularity theory for nonlocal obstacle problems with critical and subcritical scaling

Despite significant recent advances in the regularity theory for obstacle problems with integro-differential operators, some fundamental questions remained open. On the one hand, there was a lack of understanding of parabolic problems with critical scaling, such as the obstacle problem for $\partial_t+\sqrt{-Δ}$. No regularity result for free boundaries was known for parabolic problems with such scaling. On the other hand, optimal regularity estimates for solutions (to both parabolic and elliptic problems) relied strongly on monotonicity formulas and, therefore, were known only in some specific cases. In this paper, we present a novel and unified approach to answer these open questions and, at the same time, to treat very general operators, recovering as particular cases most previously known regularity results on nonlocal obstacle problems.

Regularity Theory for Elliptic PDE

This manuscript aims to provide a self-contained introduction to the regularity theory for elliptic PDE, focusing on the main ideas rather than proving all results in their greatest generality. It can be seen as a bridge between an elementary PDE course and more advanced textbooks. This is a draft of the book "Regularity Theory for Elliptic PDE". The final version has been published in Zurich Lectures in Advanced Mathematics, EMS Press, 2022.

Optimal regularity and fine asymptotics for the porous medium equation in bounded domains

We prove the optimal global regularity of nonnegative solutions to the porous medium equation in smooth bounded domains with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition after certain waiting time $T^*$. More precisely, we show that solutions are $C^{2,α}(\overlineΩ)$ in space, with $α=\frac1m$, and $C^\infty$ in time (uniformly in $x\in \overlineΩ$), for $t>T^*$. Furthermore, this allows us to refine the asymptotics of solutions for large times, improving the best known results so far in two ways: we establish a faster rate of convergence $O(t^{-1-γ})$, and we prove that the convergence holds in the $C^{1,α}(\overlineΩ)$ topology.

Stable cones in the thin one-phase problem

The aim of this work is to study homogeneous stable solutions to the thin (or fractional) one-phase free boundary problem. The problem of classifying stable (or minimal) homogeneous solutions in dimensions $n\geq3$ is completely open. In this context, axially symmetric solutions are expected to play the same role as Simons' cone in the classical theory of minimal surfaces, but even in this simpler case the problem is open. The goal of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, our first main contribution is to find, for the first time, the stability condition for the thin one-phase problem. Quite surprisingly, this requires the use of "large solutions" for the fractional Laplacian, which blow up on the free boundary. On the other hand, using our new stability condition, we show that any axially symmetric homogeneous stable solution in dimensions $n\le 5$ is one-dimensional, independently of the parameter $s\in (0,1)$.

Optimal regularity for supercritical parabolic obstacle problems

We study the obstacle problem for parabolic operators of the type $\partial_t + L$, where $L$ is an elliptic integro-differential operator of order $2s$, such as $(-Δ)^s$, in the supercritical regime $s \in (0,{1/2})$. The best result in this context was due to Caffarelli and Figalli, who established the $C^{1,s}_x$ regularity of solutions for the case $L = (-Δ)^s$, the same regularity as in the elliptic setting. Here we prove for the first time that solutions are actually \textit{more} regular than in the elliptic case. More precisely, we show that they are $C^{1,1}$ in space and time, and that this is optimal. We also deduce the $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the free boundary. Moreover, at all free boundary points $(x_0,t_0)$, we establish the following expansion: $$(u - φ)(x_0+x,t_0+t) = c_0(t - a\cdot x)_+^2 + O(t^{2+α}+|x|^{2+α}),$$ with $c_0 > 0$, $α> 0$ and $a \in \mathbb R^n$.

Characterizing compact coincidence sets in the thin obstacle problem and the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian

In this paper we give a full classification of global solutions of the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian (including the thin obstacle problem) with compact coincidence set and at most polynomial growth in dimension $N \geq 3$. We do this in terms of a bijection onto a set of polynomials describing the asymptotics of the solution. Furthermore we prove that coincidence sets of global solutions that are compact are also convex if the solution has at most quadratic growth.

Global Schauder theory for minimizers of the $H^s(Ω)$ energy

We study the regularity of minimizers of the functional $\mathcal E(u):= [u]_{H^s(Ω)}^2 +\int_Ωfu$. This corresponds to understanding solutions for the regional fractional Laplacian in $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$. More precisely, we are interested on the global (up to the boundary) regularity of solutions, both in the case of free minimizers in $H^s(Ω)$ (i.e., Neumann problem), or in the case of Dirichlet condition $u\in H^s_0(Ω)$ when $s>\frac12$. Our main result establishes the sharp regularity of solutions in both cases: $u\in C^{2s+α}(\overlineΩ)$ in the Neumann case, and $u/δ^{2s-1}\in C^{1+α}(\overlineΩ)$ in the Dirichlet case. Here, $δ$ is the distance to $\partialΩ$, and $α<α_s$, with $α_s\in (0,1-s)$ and $2s+α_s>1$. We also show the optimality of our result: these estimates fail for $α>α_s$, even when $f$ and $\partialΩ$ are $C^\infty$.

New boundary Harnack inequalities with right hand side

We prove new boundary Harnack inequalities in Lipschitz domains for equations with a right hand side. Our main result applies to non-divergence form operators with bounded measurable coefficients and to divergence form operators with continuous coefficients, whereas the right hand side is in $L^q$ with $q > n$. Our approach is based on the scaling and comparison arguments of \cite{DS20}, and we show that all our assumptions are sharp. As a consequence of our results, we deduce the $\mathcal{C}^{1,α}$ regularity of the free boundary in the fully nonlinear obstacle problem and the fully nonlinear thin obstacle problem.

The singular set in the Stefan problem

In this paper we analyze the singular set in the Stefan problem and prove the following results: - The singular set has parabolic Hausdorff dimension at most $n-1$. - The solution admits a $C^\infty$-expansion at all singular points, up to a set of parabolic Hausdorff dimension at most $n-2$. - In $\mathbb R^3$, the free boundary is smooth for almost every time $t$, and the set of singular times $\mathcal S\subset \mathbb R$ has Hausdorff dimension at most $1/2$. These results provide us with a refined understanding of the Stefan problem's singularities and answer some long-standing open questions in the field.

Free boundary regularity for almost every solution to the Signorini problem

We investigate the regularity of the free boundary for the Signorini problem in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. It is known that regular points are $(n-1)$-dimensional and $C^\infty$. However, even for $C^\infty$ obstacles $φ$, the set of non-regular (or degenerate) points could be very large, e.g. with infinite $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$ measure. The only two assumptions under which a nice structure result for degenerate points has been established are: when $φ$ is analytic, and when $Δφ< 0$. However, even in these cases, the set of degenerate points is in general $(n-1)$-dimensional (as large as the set of regular points). In this work, we show for the first time that, "usually", the set of degenerate points is small. Namely, we prove that, given any $C^\infty$ obstacle, for "almost every" solution the non-regular part of the free boundary is at most $(n-2)$-dimensional. This is the first result in this direction for the Signorini problem. Furthermore, we prove analogous results for the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$, and for the parabolic Signorini problem. In the parabolic Signorini problem, our main result establishes that the non-regular part of the free boundary is $(n-1-α_\circ)$-dimensional for almost all times $t$, for some $α_\circ > 0$. Finally, we construct some new examples of free boundaries with degenerate points.

Non-symmetric stable operators: regularity theory and integration by parts

We study solutions to $Lu=f$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, being $L$ the generator of any, possibly non-symmetric, stable Lévy process. On the one hand, we study the regularity of solutions to $Lu=f$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ in $Ω^c$, in $C^{1,α}$ domains~$Ω$. We show that solutions $u$ satisfy $u/d^γ\in C^{\varepsilon_\circ}\big(\overlineΩ\big)$, where $d$ is the distance to $\partialΩ$, and $γ=γ(L,ν)$ is an explicit exponent that depends on the Fourier symbol of operator $L$ and on the unit normal $ν$ to the boundary $\partialΩ$. On the other hand, we establish new integration by parts identities in half spaces for such operators. These new identities extend previous ones for the fractional Laplacian, but the non-symmetric setting presents some new interesting features. Finally, we generalize the integration by parts identities in half spaces to the case of bounded $C^{1,α}$ domains. We do it via a new efficient approximation argument, which exploits the Hölder regularity of $u/d^γ$. This new approximation argument is interesting, we believe, even in the case of the fractional Laplacian.

The Neumann problem for the fractional Laplacian: regularity up to the boundary

We study the regularity up to the boundary of solutions to the Neumann problem for the fractional Laplacian. We prove that if $u$ is a weak solution of $(-Δ)^s u=f$ in $Ω$, $\mathcal N_s u=0$ in $Ω^c$, then $u$ is $C^α$ up tp the boundary for some $α>0$. Moreover, in case $s>\frac12$, we then show that $u\in C^{2s-1+α}(\overlineΩ)$. To prove these results we need, among other things, a delicate Moser iteration on the boundary with some logarithmic corrections. Our methods allow us to treat as well the Neumann problem for the regional fractional Laplacian, and we establish the same boundary regularity result. Prior to our results, the interior regularity for these Neumann problems was well understood, but near the boundary even the continuity of solutions was open.

Generic regularity of free boundaries for the obstacle problem

The goal of this paper is to establish generic regularity of free boundaries for the obstacle problem in $\mathbb R^n$. By classical results of Caffarelli, the free boundary is $C^\infty$ outside a set of singular points. Explicit examples show that the singular set could be in general $(n-1)$-dimensional ---that is, as large as the regular set. Our main result establishes that, generically, the singular set has zero $\mathcal H^{n-4}$ measure (in particular, it has codimension 3 inside the free boundary). In particular, for $n\leq4$, the free boundary is generically a $C^\infty$ manifold. This solves a conjecture of Schaeffer (dating back to 1974) on the generic regularity of free boundaries in dimensions $n\leq4$.

Sharp quantitative stability for isoperimetric inequalities with homogeneous weights

We prove the sharp quantitative stability for a wide class of weighted isoperimetric inequalities. More precisely, we consider isoperimetric inequalities in convex cones with homogeneous weights. Inspired by the proof of such isoperimetric inequalities through the ABP method, we construct a new convex coupling (i.e., a map that is the gradient of a convex function) between a generic set $E$ and the minimizer of the inequality (as in Gromov's proof of the isoperimetric inequality). Even if this map does not come from optimal transport, and even if there is a weight in the inequality, we adapt the methods of Figalli-Maggi-Pratelli and prove that if $E$ is almost optimal for the inequality then it is quantitatively close to a minimizer up to translations. Then, a delicate analysis is necessary to rule out the possibility of translations. As a step of our proof, we establish a sharp regularity result for restricted convex envelopes of a function that might be of independent interest.

Stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations are smooth up to dimension 9

In this paper we prove the following long-standing conjecture: stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations are bounded (and thus smooth) in dimension $n \leq 9$. This result, that was only known to be true for $n\leq4$, is optimal: $\log(1/|x|^2)$ is a $W^{1,2}$ singular stable solution for $n\geq10$. The proof of this conjecture is a consequence of a new universal estimate: we prove that, in dimension $n \leq 9$, stable solutions are bounded in terms only of their $L^1$ norm, independently of the nonlinearity. In addition, in every dimension we establish a higher integrability result for the gradient and optimal integrability results for the solution in Morrey spaces. As one can see by a series of classical examples, all our results are sharp. Furthermore, as a corollary we obtain that extremal solutions of Gelfand problems are $W^{1,2}$ in every dimension and they are smooth in dimension $n \leq 9$. This answers to two famous open problems posed by Brezis and Brezis-Vázquez.

The Dirichlet problem for nonlocal elliptic operators with $C^{0,α}$ exterior data

In this note we study the boundary regularity of solutions to nonlocal Dirichlet problems of the form $Lu=0$ in $Ω$, $u=g$ in $\mathbb R^N\setminusΩ$, in non-smooth domains $Ω$. When $g$ is smooth enough, then it is easy to transform this problem into an homogeneous Dirichlet problem with a bounded right hand side, for which the boundary regularity is well understood. Here, we study the case in which $g\in C^{0,α}$, and establish the optimal Hölder regularity of $u$ up to the boundary. Our results extend previous results of Grubb for $C^\infty$ domains $Ω$.
