On the origin of extremely high strength of ultrafine-grained Al alloys produced by severe plastic deformation

Ultrafine-grained Al alloys produced by high pressure torsion are found to exhibit a very high strength, considerably exceeding the Hall-Petch predictions for the ultrafine grains. The phenomena can be attributed to the unique combination of ultrafine structure and deformation-induced segregations of solute elements along grain boundaries, which may affect the emission and mobility of intragranular dislocations.

Homogeneous Cu-Fe super saturated solid solutions prepared by severe plastic deformation

A Cu-Fe nanocomposite containing 50 nm thick iron filaments dispersed in a copper matrix was processed by torsion under high pressure at various strain rates and temperatures. The resulting nanostructures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography and Mössbauer spectrometry. It is shown that alpha-Fe filaments are dissolved during severe plastic deformation leading to the formation of a homogeneous supersaturated solid solution of about 12 at.% Fe in fcc Cu. The dissolution rate is proportional to the total plastic strain but is not very sensitive to the strain rate. Similar results were found for samples processed at liquid nitrogen temperature. APT data revealed asymmetric composition gradients resulting from the deformation induced intermixing. On the basis of these experimental data, the formation of the supersaturated solid solutions is discussed

Atomic scale characterization of deformation induced interfacial mixing in a Cu/V nanocomposite wire

The microstructure of a Cu/V nanocomposite wire processed by cold drawing was investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. The experimental data clearly reveal some deformation induced interfacial mixing where the vanadium filaments are nanoscaled. The mixed layer is a 2nm wide vanadium gradient in the fcc Cu phase. This mechanical mixing leads to the local fragmentation and dissolution of the filaments and to the formation of vanadium super saturated solid solutions in fcc Cu.

Complementary use of TEM and APT for the investigation of steels nanostructured by severe plastic deformation

The properties of bulk nanostructured materials are often controlled by atomic scale features like segregation along defects or composition gradients. Here we discuss about the complimentary use of TEM and APT to obtain a full description of nanostructures. The advantages and limitations of both techniques are highlighted on the basis of experimental data collected in severely deformed steels with a special emphasis on carbon spatial distribution.

Decomposition process in a FeAuPd alloy nanostructured by severe plastic deformation

The decomposition process mechanisms have been investigated in a Fe50Au25Pd25 (at.%) alloy processed by severe plastic deformation. Phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction and microstructures were observed using transmission electron microscopy. In the coarse grain alloy homogenized and aged at $450 ^{circ}\mathrm{C}$, the bcc α-Fe and fcc AuPd phases nucleate in the fcc supersaturated solid solution and grow by a discontinuous precipitation process resulting in a typical lamellar structure. The grain size of the homogenized FeAuPd alloy was reduced in a range of 50 to 100nm by high pressure torsion. Aging at $450 ^{circ}\mathrm{C}$ this nanostructure leads to the decomposition of the solid solution into an equi-axed microstructure. The grain growth is very limited during aging and the grain size remains under 100nm. The combination of two phases with different crystallographic structures (bcc α-Fe and fcc AuPd) and of the nanoscaled grain size gives rise to a significant hardening of the alloy

Precipitate stability and recrystallisation in the weld nuggets of friction stir welded Al-Mg-Si and Al-Mg-Sc alloys

Two different precipitate hardening aluminium alloys processed by friction stir welding were investigated. The microstructure and the hardness of the as delivered materials were compared to that of the weld nugget. Transmission electron microscopy observations combined with three-dimensional atom probe analyses clearly show that β;" precipitates dissolved in the nugget of the Al-Mg-Si giving rise to some supersaturated solid solution. It is shown that the dramatic softening of the weld could be partly recovered by post-welding ageing treatments. In the Al-Mg-Sc alloy, Al3Sc precipitate size and density are unchanged in the nugget comparing to the base metal. These precipitates strongly reduce the boundary mobility of recrystallised grains, leading to a grain size in the nugget much smaller than in the Al-Mg-Si alloy. Both coherent and incoherent precipitates were detected. This feature may indicate that a combination of continuous and discontinuous recrystallisation occurred in the weld nugget.

Nanostructure and related mechanical properties of an Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by severe plastic deformation

Microstructural features and mechanical properties of an Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by high-pressure torsion have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, three-dimensional atom probe, tensile tests and microhardness measurements. It is shown that HPT processing of the Al-Mg-Si alloy leads to a much stronger grain size refinement than of pure aluminium (down to 100 nm). Moreover, massive segregation of alloying elements along grain boundaries is observed. This nanostructure exhibits a yield stress even two times higher than that after a standard T6 heat treatment of the coarse grained alloy

The role of carbon segregation on nanocrystallisation of pearlitic steels processed by severe plastic deformation

The nanostructure and the carbon distribution in a pearlitic steel processed by torsion under high pressure was investigated by three-dimensional atom probe. In the early stage of deformation (shear strain of 62), off-stoichiometry cementite was analysed close to interphase boundaries and a strong segregation of carbon atoms along dislocation cell boundaries was observed in the ferrite. At a shear strain of 300, only few nanoscaled off-stoichiometry cementite particles remain and a nanoscaled equiaxed grain structure with a grain size of about 20 nm was revealed. 3D-AP data clearly point out a strong segregation of carbon atoms along grain boundaries. The influence of this carbon atom segregation on the nanostructure formation is discussed and a scenario accounting for the nanocrystallisation during severe plastic deformation is proposed.

Nanostructure and properties of a Cu-Cr composite processed by severe plastic deformation

A Cu-Cr composite was processed by severe plastic deformation to investigate the role of interphase boundaries on the grain size reduction mechanisms. The as-deformed material exhibits a grain size of only 20nm. This gives rise to a dramatic increase of the hardness. Some deformation induced Cu super saturated solid solutions were clearly exhibited and it is shown that they decrease the hardness. The formation of such supersaturated solid solution and their influence on the mechanical properties are discussed.

Non-equilibrium intermixing and phase transformation in severely deformed Al/Ni multilayers

Al/Ni multilayers have been prepared by repeated folding and cold rolling (F&R) of elemental foils. The thickness of Al and Ni foils is reduced down to less than 50 nm after fifty F&R cycles. Three-dimensional atom probe analyses clearly reveal the presence of supersaturated solid solutions and give the evidence of deformation-induced intermixing. The formation of the solid solutions and their transformation into the Al3Ni phase upon annealing is discussed.

Nanostructure of a cold drawn tempered martensitic steel

The carbon atom distribution in a tempered martensitic steel processed by cold drawing was investigated with a three-dimensional atom probe. Data clearly show that cementite starts to decompose at the early stage of deformation. This indicates that the driving force of cementite decomposition during plastic deformation is not related to a strong increase of the interfacial energy. Carbon atmospheres were also analysed. They probably result from pipe diffusion of carbon atoms along dislocations pined by Fe3C carbides.

Mechanical alloying of Cu and Fe induced by severe plastic deformation of a Cu-Fe composite

A filamentary composite elaborated by cold drawing was processed by High Pressure Torsion (HPT). The nanostructure resulting from this severe plastic deformation (SPD) was investigated thanks to scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and 3D atom probe. Although the mutual solubility of Cu and Fe is extremely low at room temperature in equilibrium conditions, it is shown that nanoscaled Fe clusters dissolve in the Cu matrix. The non-equilibrium copper supersaturated solid solutions contain up to 20at.% Fe. The driving force of the dissolution is attributed to capillary pressures and mechanisms which could enhanced the atomic mobility during HPT are discussed. We conclude that the interdiffusion is the result of a dramatic increase of the vacancy concentration during SPD.
