Compressing ACAS-Xu Lookup Tables with Binary Decision Diagrams

The Airborne Collision Avoidance System Xu (ACAS-Xu) relies on large certified Look-Up Tables (LUTs) that encode the exact decision logic used in operation. Neural-network-based approximations have been proposed to reduce memory requirements, but they inherently introduce approximation errors and complicate formal verification. This paper presents a symbolic compression approach based on Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) that preserves the exact semantics of the ACAS-Xu LUTs. The resulting representation is canonical, deterministic, and fully equivalent to the original tables, enabling sound and exact reasoning over the complete decision logic. By expressing both the system behavior and domain-specific operational properties within a common Boolean framework, verification reduces to efficient BDD operations and emptiness checks, with precise counterexamples generated when properties are violated. We demonstrate that the proposed BDD-based representation significantly reduces memory usage, achieves predictable and low-latency execution, and can be deployed on embedded platforms. These results highlight BDDs as a compelling alternative for exact, verifiable, and embedded deployment of ACAS-Xu decision logic.

Semidefinite Approximations of Reachable Sets for Discrete-time Polynomial Systems

We consider the problem of approximating the reachable set of a discrete-time polynomial system from a semialgebraic set of initial conditions under general semialgebraic set constraints. Assuming inclusion in a given simple set like a box or an ellipsoid, we provide a method to compute certified outer approximations of the reachable set. The proposed method consists of building a hierarchy of relaxations for an infinite-dimensional moment problem. Under certain assumptions, the optimal value of this problem is the volume of the reachable set and the optimum solution is the restriction of the Lebesgue measure on this set. Then, one can outer approximate the reachable set as closely as desired with a hierarchy of super level sets of increasing degree polynomials. For each fixed degree, finding the coefficients of the polynomial boils down to computing the optimal solution of a convex semidefinite program. When the degree of the polynomial approximation tends to infinity, we provide strong convergence guarantees of the super level sets to the reachable set. We also present some application examples together with numerical results.

Hierarchical State Machines as Modular Horn Clauses

In model based development, embedded systems are modeled using a mix of dataflow formalism, that capture the flow of computation, and hierarchical state machines, that capture the modal behavior of the system. For safety analysis, existing approaches rely on a compilation scheme that transform the original model (dataflow and state machines) into a pure dataflow formalism. Such compilation often result in loss of important structural information that capture the modal behaviour of the system. In previous work we have developed a compilation technique from a dataflow formalism into modular Horn clauses. In this paper, we present a novel technique that faithfully compile hierarchical state machines into modular Horn clauses. Our compilation technique preserves the structural and modal behavior of the system, making the safety analysis of such models more tractable.

Correct-by-construction model composition: Application to the Invasive Software Composition method

Composition technologies improve reuse in the development of large-scale complex systems. Safety critical systems require intensive validation and verification activities. These activities should be compositional in order to reduce the amount of residual verification activities that must be conducted on the composite in addition to the ones conducted on each components. In order to ensure the correctness of compositional verification and assess the minimality of the residual verification, the contribution proposes to use formal specification and verification at the composition operator level. A first experiment was conducted in [15] using proof assistants to formalize the generic composition technology ISC and prove that type checking was compositional. This contribution extends our early work to handle full model conformance and study the mandatory residual verification. It shows that ISC operators are not fully compositional with respect to conformance and provides the minimal preconditions on the operators mandatory to ensure compositional conformance. The appropriate operators from ISC (especially bind) have been implemented in the COQ4MDE framework that provides a full implementation of MOF in the COQ proof assistant. Expected properties, respectively residual verification, are expressed as post, respectfully pre, conditions for the composition operators. The correctness of the compositional verification is proven in COQ.

Static Safety for an Actor Dedicated Process Calculus by Abstract Interpretation

The actor model eases the definition of concurrent programs with non uniform behaviors. Static analysis of such a model was previously done in a data-flow oriented way, with type systems. This approach was based on constraint set resolution and was not able to deal with precise properties for communications of behaviors. We present here a new approach, control-flow oriented, based on the abstract interpretation framework, able to deal with communication of behaviors. Within our new analyses, we are able to verify most of the previous properties we observed as well as new ones, principally based on occurrence counting.
