Scheme theory for commutative semirings

In this survey, we describe two different approaches to constructing affine schemes for commutative semirings: one based on prime ideals, and another based on prime kernels (also called subtractive ideals). We then explain how these two approaches are related through the theory of universal valuations.

Condensed Sets via free resolutions

We show the equivalence of several constructions of the category of condensed sets by using free resolutions of compact Hausdorff spaces. We also give an elementary construction of the condensed set associated to any presheaf on compact Hausdorff spaces.

A quaternionic construction of $p$-adic singular moduli

Rigid meromorphic cocycles were introduced by Darmon and Vonk as a conjectural $p$-adic extension of the theory of singular moduli to real quadratic base fields. They are certain cohomology classes of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ which can be evaluated at real quadratic irrationalities and the values thus obtained are conjectured to lie in algebraic extensions of the base field. In this article we present a similar construction of cohomology casses in which $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ is replaced by an order in an indefinite quaternion algebra over a totally real number field $F$. These quaternionic cohomology classes can be evaluated at elements in almost totally complex extensions $K$ of $F$, and we conjecture that the corresponding values lie in algebraic extensions of $K$. We also report on extensive numerical evidence for this algebraicity conjecture.

A census of all genus 4 curves over the field with 2 elements

We explain how we computed equations for all genus 4 curves defined of the field with 2 elements, up-to-isomorphism, and some of the data we obtained. We give descriptions also of nice models for genus 4 curves over characteristic 2 fields, in both the hyperelliptic case and the trigonal case.

Schottky Groups over Valuation Rings

Given a non-trivial complete valued field $K$ with value group $Λ$, we construct a $Λ$-tree space associated to $K$ analog of the Bruhat-Tits tree, and locally finite trees associated to compact subsets of the projective line. We propose a definition of hyperbolic matrix and Schottky group over such field $K$. To any such Schottky group $Γ$, we associate a compact set with an action of $Γ$, such that the quotient graph of the associated tree is a finite graph, and $Γ$ is identified with its fundamental group. Finally explain a method to construct such groups. This results extend the classical ones for discrete valuations of Mumford and non-archimedean rank 1 valuations of Gerritzen and Van der Put.

Galois descent for the gonality of curves

We determine conditions for the invariance of the gonality under base extension, depending on the numeric invariants of the curve. More generally, we study the Galois descent of morphisms of curves to Brauer-Severi varieties, and also of rational normal scrolls.

The Abel Jacobi map for Mumford Curves via Integration

We construct the Abel-Jacobi map for Mumford curves over any complete non-archimedean field, using multiplicative integrals and in the setting of Berkovich analytic geometry. Along the way, we proof some results concerning graphs and mesures related to tropical geometry.

Hyperelliptic curves covering an elliptic curve twice

We show that for any elliptic curve (with j invariant not 0 or 1728) over any field of characteristic different from 2 and 3, there exists an hyperelliptic curve H of genus 5 with two independent maps to the given elliptic curve. We also show that, if we want such a curve to be just geometrically hyperelliptic, so having a degree two map to a conic, then there are some with genus 3.

Five squares in arithmetic progression over quadratic fields

We give several criteria to show over which quadratic number fields Q(sqrt{D}) there should exists a non-constant arithmetic progressions of five squares. This is done by translating the problem to determining when some genus five curves C_D defined over Q have rational points, and then using a Mordell-Weil sieve argument among others. Using a elliptic Chabauty-like method, we prove that the only non-constant arithmetic progressions of five squares over Q(sqrt{409}), up to equivalence, is 7^2, 13^2, 17^2, 409, 23^2. Furthermore, we give an algorithm that allow to construct all the non-constant arithmetic progressions of five squares over all quadratic fields. Finally, we state several problems and conjectures related to this problem.

On a conjecture of Rudin on squares in Arithmetic Progressions

Let Q(N;q,a) denotes the number of squares in the arithmetic progression qn+a, for n=0, 1,...,N-1, and let Q(N) be the maximum of Q(N;q,a) over all non-trivial arithmetic progressions qn + a. Rudin's conjecture asserts that Q(N)=O(Sqrt(N)), and in its stronger form that Q(N)=Q(N;24,1) if N=> 6. We prove the conjecture above for 6<=N<=52. We even prove that the arithmetic progression 24n+1 is the only one, up to equivalence, that contains Q(N) squares for the values of N such that Q(N) increases, for 7<=N<=52 (hence, for N=8,13,16,23,27,36,41 and 52). This allow us to assert, what we have called Super-Strong Rudin's Conjecture: let be N=GP_k+1=> 8 for some integer k, where GP_k is the k-th generalized pentagonal number, then Q(N)=Q(N;q,a) with gcd(q,a) squarefree and q> 0 if and only if (q,a)=(24,1).

Trivial points on towers of curves

We define and study trivial points on towers of curves over number fields, and we show their finiteness in some cases. We relate these to the unboundeness of the gonality of the curves, which we show under some hypothesis. The problem is related to recent results of Cadoret and Tamagawa, and Ellenberg, Hall and Kowalski.

Rational Periodic Sequences for the Lyness Recurrence

Consider the celebrated Lyness recurrence $x_{n+2}=(a+x_{n+1})/x_{n}$ with $a\in\Q$. First we prove that there exist initial conditions and values of $a$ for which it generates periodic sequences of rational numbers with prime periods $1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10$ or $12$ and that these are the only periods that rational sequences $\{x_n\}_n$ can have. It is known that if we restrict our attention to positive rational values of $a$ and positive rational initial conditions the only possible periods are $1,5$ and $9$. Moreover 1-periodic and 5-periodic sequences are easily obtained. We prove that for infinitely many positive values of $a,$ positive 9-period rational sequences occur. This last result is our main contribution and answers an open question left in previous works of Bastien \& Rogalski and Zeeman. We also prove that the level sets of the invariant associated to the Lyness map is a two-parameter family of elliptic curves that is a universal family of the elliptic curves with a point of order $n, n\ge5,$ including $n$ infinity. This fact implies that the Lyness map is a universal normal form for most birrational maps on elliptic curves.

On symmetric square values of quadratic polynomials

We prove that there does not exist a non-square quadratic polynomial with integer coefficients and an axis of symmetry which takes square values for N consecutive integers for N=7 or N >= 9. At the opposite, if N <= 6 or N=8 there are infinitely many.

Formal completions of Néron models for algebraic tori

We calculate the formal group law which represents the completion of the Néron model of an algebraic torus over the rationals that splits in a tamely ramified abelian extension. As a tools in the proof, we define and give criterions to compute the Weil restriction of a formal group law and the analog of the fixed part of a formal group law with respect to the action of a (finite) group.

Squares in arithmetic progression over number fields

We show that there exists an upper bound for the number of squares in arithmetic progression over a number field that depends only on the degree of the field. We show that this bound is 5 for quadratic fields, and also that the result generalizes to $k$-powers for $k>1$.
