Precise Local Estimates for Differential Equations driven by Fractional Brownian Motion: Hypoelliptic Case

This article is concerned with stochastic differential equations driven by a $d$ dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>1/4$, understood in the rough paths sense. Whenever the coefficients of the equation satisfy a uniform hypoellipticity condition, we establish a sharp local estimate on the associated control distance function and a sharp local lower estimate on the density of the solution. Our methodology relies heavily on the rough paths structure of the equation.

Path Developments and Tail Asymptotics of Signature for Pure Rough Paths

Solutions to linear controlled differential equations can be expressed in terms of iterated path integrals of the driving path. This collection of iterated integrals encodes essentially all information about the driving path. While upper bounds for iterated path integrals are well known, lower bounds are much less understood, and it is known only relatively recently that some type of asymptotics for the $n$-th order iterated integral can be used to recover some intrinsic quantitative properties of the path, such as the length of $C^1$ paths. In the present paper, we investigate the simplest type of rough paths (the rough path analogue of line segments), and establish uniform upper and lower estimates for the tail asymptotics of iterated integrals in terms of the local variation of the path. Our methodology, which we believe is new for this problem, involves developing paths into complex semisimple Lie algebras and using the associated representation theory to study spectral properties of Lie polynomials under the Lie algebraic development.

A Non-vanishing Property for the Signature of a Path

We prove that a continuous path with finite length in a real Banach space cannot have infinitely many zero components in its signature unless it is tree-like. In particular, this allows us to strengthen a limit theorem for signature recently proved by Chang, Lyons and Ni. What lies at the heart of our proof is a complexification idea together with deep results from holomorphic polynomial approximations in the theory of several complex variables.

Long Time Asymptotics of Heat Kernels and Brownian Winding Numbers on Manifolds with Boundary

Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. We obtain the exact long time asymptotic behaviour of the heat kernel on abelian coverings of M with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. As an application, we study the long time behaviour of the abelianized winding of reflected Brownian motions in M. In particular, we prove a Gaussian type central limit theorem showing that when rescaled appropriately, the fluctuations of the abelianized winding are normally distributed with an explicit covariance matrix.

The Tail Asymptotics of the Brownian Signature

The signature of a path γis a sequence whose n-th term is the order-n iterated integrals of γ. It arises from solving multidimensional linear differential equations driven by γ. We are interested in relating the path properties of γwith its signature. If γis C^{1}, then an elegant formula of Hambly and Lyons relates the length of γto the tail asymptotics of the signature. We show an analogous formula for the multidimensional Brownian motion, with the quadratic variation playing a similar role to the length. In the proof, we study the hyperbolic development of Brownian motion and also obtain a new subadditive estimate for the asymptotic of signature, which may be of independent interest. As a corollary, we strengthen the existing uniqueness results for the signatures of Brownian motion.

Reconstruction for the Signature of a Rough Path

Recently it was proved that the group of rough paths modulo tree-like equivalence is isomorphic to the corresponding signature group through the signature map S (a generalized notion of taking iterated path integrals). However, the proof of this uniqueness result does not contain any information on how to "see" the trajectory of a (tree-reduced) rough path from its signature, and a constructive understanding on the uniqueness result (in particular on the inverse of S) has become an interesting and important question. The aim of the present paper is to reconstruct a rough path from its signature in an explicit and universal way.

A Quasi-sure Non-degeneracy Property for the Brownian Rough Path

In the present paper, we are going to show that outside a slim set in the sense of Malliavin (or quasi-surely), the signature path (which consists of iterated path integrals in every degree) of Brownian motion is non-self-intersecting. This property relates closely to a non-degeneracy property for the Brownian rough path arising naturally from the uniqueness of signature problem in rough path theory. As an important consequence we conclude that quasi-surely, the Brownian rough path does not have any tree-like pieces and every sample path of Brownian motion is uniquely determined by its signature up to reparametrization.

The Signature of a Rough Path: Uniqueness

In the context of controlled differential equations, the signature is the exponential function on paths. B. Hambly and T. Lyons proved that the signature of a bounded variation path is trivial if and only if the path is tree-like. We extend Hambly-Lyons' result and their notion of tree-like paths to the setting of weakly geometric rough paths in a Banach space. At the heart of our approach is a new definition for reduced path and a lemma identifying the reduced path group with the space of signatures.

Quasi-sure Existence of Gaussian Rough Paths and Large Deviation Principles for Capacities

We construct a quasi-sure version (in the sense of Malliavin) of geometric rough paths associated with a Gaussian process with long-time memory. As an application we establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for capacities for such Gaussian rough paths. Together with Lyons' universal limit theorem, our results yield immediately the corresponding results for pathwise solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by such Gaussian process in the sense of rough paths. Moreover, our LDP result implies the result of Yoshida on the LDP for capacities over the abstract Wiener space associated with such Gaussian process.

Simple Piecewise Geodesic Interpolation of Simple and Jordan Curves with Applications

We explicitly construct simple, piecewise minimizing geodesic, arbitrarily fine interpolation of simple and Jordan curves on a Riemannian manifold. In particular, a finite sequence of partition points can be specified in advance to be included in our construction. Then we present two applications of our main results: the generalized Green's theorem and the uniqueness of signature for planar Jordan curves with finite p-variation for 1<=p<2.

The Uniqueness of Signature Problem in the Non-Markov Setting

The goal of this paper is to simplify and strengthen the Le Jan-Qian approximation scheme of studying the uniqueness of signature problem to the non-Markov setting. We establish a general framework for a class of multidimensional stochastic processes over [0,1] under which with probability one, the signature (the collection of iterated path integrals in the sense of rough paths) is well-defined and determines the sample paths of the process up to reparametrization. In particular, by using the Malliavin calculus we show that our method applies to a class of Gaussian processes including fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the Brownian bridge.

G-Brownian Motion as Rough Paths and Differential Equations Driven by G-Brownian Motion

The present paper is devoted to the study of sample paths of G-Brownian motion and stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion from the view of rough path theory. As the starting point, we show that quasi-surely, sample paths of G-Brownian motion can be enhanced to the second level in a canonical way so that they become geometric rough paths of roughness 2 < p < 3. This result enables us to introduce the notion of rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion in the pathwise sense under the general framework of rough paths. Next we establish the fundamental relation between SDEs and RDEs driven by G-Brownian motion. As an application, we introduce the notion of SDEs on a differentiable manifold driven by GBrownian motion and construct solutions from the RDE point of view by using pathwise localization technique. This is the starting point of introducing G-Brownian motion on a Riemannian manifold, based on the idea of Eells-Elworthy-Malliavin. The last part of this paper is devoted to such construction for a wide and interesting class of G-functions whose invariant group is the orthogonal group. We also develop the Euler-Maruyama approximation for SDEs driven by G-Brownian motion of independent interest.

On the Finite Dimensional Joint Characteristic Function of Lévy's Stochastic Area Processes

The goal of this paper is to derive a formula for the finite dimensional joint characteristic function (the Fourier transform of the finite dimensional distribution) of the coupled process ${(W_{t},L_{t}^{A}):t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$, where $\{W_{t}:t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$ is a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and $\{L_{t}^{A}:t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$ is the generalized $d$-dimensional L$\acute{e}$vy's stochastic area process associated to a $d\times d$ matrix $A.$ Here $A$ need not be skew-symmetric, and in our computation we allow $A$ to vary. The problem finally reduces to the solution of a recursive system of symmetric matrix Riccati equations and a system of independent first order linear matrix ODEs. As an example, the two dimensional Lévy's stochastic area process is studied in detail.
