Predictive Switch-Controller Association and Control Devolution for SDN Systems

For software-defined networking (SDN) systems, to enhance the scalability and reliability of control plane, existing solutions adopt either multi-controller design with static switch-controller associations, or static control devolution by delegating certain request processing back to switches. Such solutions can fall short in face of temporal variations of request traffics, incurring considerable local computation costs on switches and their communication costs to controllers. So far, it still remains an open problem to develop a joint online scheme that conducts dynamic switch-controller association and dynamic control devolution. In addition, the fundamental benefits of predictive scheduling to SDN systems still remain unexplored. In this paper, we identify the non-trivial trade-off in such a joint design and formulate a stochastic network optimization problem that aims to minimize time-averaged total system costs and ensure long-term queue stability. By exploiting the unique problem structure, we devise a predictive online switch-controller association and control devolution (POSCAD) scheme, which solves the problem through a series of online distributed decision making. Theoretical analysis shows that without prediction, POSCAD can achieve near-optimal total system costs with a tunable trade-off for queue stability. With prediction, POSCAD can achieve even better performance with shorter latencies. We conduct extensive simulations to evaluate POSCAD. Notably, with mild-value of future information, POSCAD incurs a significant reduction in request latencies, even when faced with prediction errors.

Polar Coupling Enabled Nonlinear Optical Filtering at MoS$_2$/Ferroelectric Heterointerfaces

Complex oxide heterointerfaces and van der Waals heterostructures present two versatile but intrinsically different platforms for exploring emergent quantum phenomena and designing new functionalities. The rich opportunity offered by the synergy between these two classes of materials, however, is yet to be charted. Here, we report an unconventional nonlinear optical filtering effect resulting from the interfacial polar alignment between monolayer MoS$_2$ and a neighboring ferroelectric oxide thin film. The second harmonic generation response at the heterointerface is either substantially enhanced or almost entirely quenched by an underlying ferroelectric domain wall depending on its chirality, and can be further tailored by the polar domains. Unlike the extensively studied coupling mechanisms driven by charge, spin, and lattice, the interfacial tailoring effect is solely mediated by the polar symmetry, as well explained via our density functional theory calculations, pointing to a new material strategy for the functional design of nanoscale reconfigurable optical applications.

EasiCS: the objective and fine-grained classification method of cervical spondylosis dysfunction

The precise diagnosis is of great significance in developing precise treatment plans to restore neck function and reduce the burden posed by the cervical spondylosis (CS). However, the current available neck function assessment method are subjective and coarse-grained. In this paper, based on the relationship among CS, cervical structure, cervical vertebra function, and surface electromyography (sEMG), we seek to develop a clustering algorithms on the sEMG data set collected from the clinical environment and implement the division. We proposed and developed the framework EasiCS, which consists of dimension reduction, clustering algorithm EasiSOM, spectral clustering algorithm EasiSC. The EasiCS outperform the commonly used seven algorithms overall.

EasiCSDeep: A deep learning model for Cervical Spondylosis Identification using surface electromyography signal

Cervical spondylosis (CS) is a common chronic disease that affects up to two-thirds of the population and poses a serious burden on individuals and society. The early identification has significant value in improving cure rate and reducing costs. However, the pathology is complex, and the mild symptoms increase the difficulty of the diagnosis, especially in the early stage. Besides, the time-consuming and costliness of hospital medical service reduces the attention to the CS identification. Thus, a convenient, low-cost intelligent CS identification method is imperious demanded. In this paper, we present an intelligent method based on the deep learning to identify CS, using the surface electromyography (sEMG) signal. Faced with the complex, high dimensionality and weak usability of the sEMG signal, we proposed and developed a multi-channel EasiCSDeep algorithm based on the convolutional neural network, which consists of the feature extraction, spatial relationship representation and classification algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this EasiCSDeep is the first effort to employ the deep learning and the sEMG data to identify CS. Compared with previous state-of-the-art algorithm, our algorithm achieves a significant improvement.

Interfacial Phonon Scattering and Transmission Loss in >1 um Thick Silicon-on-insulator Thin Films

Scattering of phonons at boundaries of a crystal (grains, surfaces, or solid/solid interfaces) is characterized by the phonon wavelength, the angle of incidence, and the interface roughness, as historically evaluated using a specularity parameter p formulated by Ziman [J. M. Ziman, Electrons and Phonons (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1960)]. This parameter was initially defined to determine the probability of a phonon specularly reflecting or diffusely scattering from the rough surface of a material. The validity of Ziman's theory as extended to solid/solid interfaces has not been previously validated. To better understand the interfacial scattering of phonons and to test the validity of Ziman's theory, we precisely measured the in-plane thermal conductivity of a series of Si films in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers by time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) for a Si film thickness range of 1 - 10 μm and a temperature range of 100 - 300 K. The Si/SiO2 interface roughness was determined to be 0.11+/-0.04 nm using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, we compared our in-plane thermal conductivity measurements to theoretical calculations that combine first-principles phonon transport with Ziman's theory. Calculations using Ziman's specularity parameter significantly overestimate values from the TDTR measurements. We attribute this discrepancy to phonon transmission through the solid/solid interface into the substrate, which is not accounted for by Ziman's theory for surfaces. We derive a simple expression for the specularity parameter at solid/amorphous interfaces and achieve good agreement between calculations and measurement values.

Dynamic Switch-Controller Association and Control Devolution for SDN Systems

In software-defined networking (SDN), as data plane scale expands, scalability and reliability of the control plane have become major concerns. To mitigate such concerns, two kinds of solutions have been proposed separately. One is multi- controller architecture, i.e., a logically centralized control plane with physically distributed controllers. The other is control devolution, i.e., delegating control of some flows back to switches. Most of existing solutions adopt either static switch-controller association or static devolution, which may not adapt well to the traffic variation, leading to high communication costs between switches and controller, and high computation costs of switches. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to jointly consider both solutions, i.e., we dynamically associate switches with controllers and dynamically devolve control of flows to switches. Our scheme is an efficient online algorithm that does not need the statistics of traffic flows. By adjusting a parameter, we can make a trade- off between costs and queue backlogs. Theoretical analysis and extensive simulations show that our scheme yields much lower costs or latency compared to other schemes, as well as balanced loads among controllers.

Net reaction rate and neutrino emissivity for the Urca process in departure from chemical equilibrium

We discuss the effect of compression on Urca shells in the ocean and crust of accreting neutron stars, especially in superbursting sources. We find that Urca shells may be deviated from chemical equilibrium in neutron stars which accrete at several tenths of the local Eddington accretion rate. The deviation depends on the energy threshold of the parent and daughter nuclei, the transition strength, the temperature, and the local accretion rate. In a typical crust model of accreting neutron stars, the chemical departures range from a few tenths of kBT to tens of kBT for various Urca pairs. If the Urca shell can exist in crusts of accreting neutron stars, compression may enhance the net neutrino cooling rate by a factor of about 1 ? 2 relative to the neutrino emissivity in chemical equilibrium. For some cases, such as Urca pairs with small energy thresholds and/or weak transition strength, the large chemical departure may result in net heating rather than cooling, although the released heat can be small. Strong Urca pairs in the deep crust are hard to be deviated even in neutron stars accreting at the local Eddington accretion rate.

Bondi accretion of dark matter by neutron stars

In this paper, we have compared two different accretion mechanisms of dark matter particles by a canonical neutron star with $M=1.4~M_{\odot}$ and $R=10~{\rm km}$, and shown the effects of dark matter heating on the surface temperature of star. We should take into account the Bondi accretion of dark matter by neutron stars rather than the accretion mechanism of Kouvaris (2008) \citep{Kouvaris08}, once the dark matter density is higher than $\sim3.81~\rm GeV/cm^3$. Based on the Bondi accretion mechanism and heating of dark matter annihilation, the surface temperature platform of star can appear at $\sim 10^{6.5}$ year and arrive $\sim 1.12\times10^5$ K for the dark matter density of $3.81~\rm GeV/cm^3$, which is one order of magnitude higher than the case of Kouvaris (2008) with dark matter density of $30~\rm GeV/cm^3$.

Temperature dependence of anisotropic thermal conductivity tensor of bulk black phosphorus

To date, the intrinsic thermal conductivity tensor of bulk black phosphorus (BP), an important 2D material, is still unknown, since recent studies focus on BP flakes not on bulk BP. Here we report the anisotropic thermal conductivity tensor of bulk BP, for temperature range 80 - 300 K. Our measurements are similar to prior measurements on submicron BP flakes along zigzag and armchair axes, but are >25% higher in the through-plane axis, suggesting that phonon mean-free-paths are substantially longer in the through-plane direction. We find that despite the anisotropy in thermal conductivity, phonons are predominantly scattered by the same Umklapp processes in all directions. We also find that the phonon relaxation time is rather isotropic in the basal planes, but is highly anisotropic in the through-plane direction. Our work advances fundamental knowledge of anisotropic scattering of phonons in BP and is an important benchmark for future studies on thermal properties of BP nanostructures.

Constraints on millicharged particles by neutron stars

We have constrained the charge-mass ($\varepsilon-m$) phase space of millicharged particles through the simulation of the rotational evolution of neutron stars, where an extra slow-down effect due to the accretions of millicharged dark matter particles is considered. For a canonical neutron star of $M=1.4~M_{\odot}$ and $R=10~{\rm km}$ with typical magnetic field strength $B_{0}=10^{12}$ G, we have shown an upper limit of millicharged particles, which is compatible with recently experimental and observational bounds. Meanwhile, we have also explored the influences on the $\varepsilon-m$ phase space of millicharged particles for different magnetic fields $B_{0}$ and dark matter density $ρ_{\rm{DM}}$ in the vicinity of the neutron star.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for MIMO-OFDM Mobile Multimedia Communication Systems with QoS Constraints

It is widely recognized that besides the quality of service (QoS), the energy efficiency is also a key parameter in designing and evaluating mobile multimedia communication systems, which has catalyzed great interest in recent literature. In this paper, an energy efficiency model is first proposed for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) mobile multimedia communication systems with statistical QoS constraints. Employing the channel matrix singular-value-decomposition (SVD) method, all subchannels are classified by their channel characteristics. Furthermore, the multi-channel joint optimization problem in conventional MIMO-OFDM communication systems is transformed into a multi-target single channel optimization problem by grouping all subchannels. Therefore, a closed-form solution of the energy efficiency optimization is derived for MIMO-OFDM mobile mlutimedia communication systems. As a consequence, an energy-efficiency optimized power allocation (EEOPA) algorithm is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of MIMO-OFDM mobile multimedia communication systems. Simulation comparisons validate that the proposed EEOPA algorithm can guarantee the required QoS with high energy efficiency in MIMO-OFDM mobile multimedia communication systems.
