Orca: Ocean Significant Wave Height Estimation with Spatio-temporally Aware Large Language Models

Significant wave height (SWH) is a vital metric in marine science, and accurate SWH estimation is crucial for various applications, e.g., marine energy development, fishery, early warning systems for potential risks, etc. Traditional SWH estimation methods that are based on numerical models and physical theories are hindered by computational inefficiencies. Recently, machine learning has emerged as an appealing alternative to improve accuracy and reduce computational time. However, due to limited observational technology and high costs, the scarcity of real-world data restricts the potential of machine learning models. To overcome these limitations, we propose an ocean SWH estimation framework, namely Orca. Specifically, Orca enhances the limited spatio-temporal reasoning abilities of classic LLMs with a novel spatiotemporal aware encoding module. By segmenting the limited buoy observational data temporally, encoding the buoys' locations spatially, and designing prompt templates, Orca capitalizes on the robust generalization ability of LLMs to estimate significant wave height effectively with limited data. Experimental results on the Gulf of Mexico demonstrate that Orca achieves state-of-the-art performance in SWH estimation.

Asymptotically Optimal Quantum Amplitude Estimation by Generalized Qubitization

We first show that the standard deviation error of quantum amplitude estimation is asymptotically lower bounded by approximately $1.28 L^{-1}$, where $L$ is the number of queries. Then we propose a generalized qubitization that can block-encode several polynomial functions simultaneously, and show how it can help estimating quantum amplitude to achieve the optimal asymptotic accuracy, so the bound is tight.

Deep Learning Based Multi-Node ISAC 4D Environmental Reconstruction with Uplink- Downlink Cooperation

Utilizing widely distributed communication nodes to achieve environmental reconstruction is one of the significant scenarios for Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) and a crucial technology for 6G. To achieve this crucial functionality, we propose a deep learning based multi-node ISAC 4D environment reconstruction method with Uplink-Downlink (UL-DL) cooperation, which employs virtual aperture technology, Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) detection, and Mutiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm to maximize the sensing capabilities of single sensing nodes. Simultaneously, it introduces a cooperative environmental reconstruction scheme involving multi-node cooperation and Uplink-Downlink (UL-DL) cooperation to overcome the limitations of single-node sensing caused by occlusion and limited viewpoints. Furthermore, the deep learning models Attention Gate Gridding Residual Neural Network (AGGRNN) and Multi-View Sensing Fusion Network (MVSFNet) to enhance the density of sparsely reconstructed point clouds are proposed, aiming to restore as many original environmental details as possible while preserving the spatial structure of the point cloud. Additionally, we propose a multi-level fusion strategy incorporating both data-level and feature-level fusion to fully leverage the advantages of multi-node cooperation. Experimental results demonstrate that the environmental reconstruction performance of this method significantly outperforms other comparative method, enabling high-precision environmental reconstruction using ISAC system.

Integrated Sensing and Communication enabled Multiple Base Stations Cooperative UAV Detection

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) exhibits notable potential for sensing the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), facilitating real-time monitoring of UAVs for security insurance. Due to the low sensing accuracy of single base stations (BSs), a cooperative UAV sensing method by multi-BS is proposed in this paper to achieve high-accuracy sensing. Specifically, a multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based symbol-level fusion method is proposed for UAV localization and velocity estimation, consisting of a single-BS preprocessing step and a lattice points searching step. The preprocessing procedure enhances the single-BS accuracy by superposing multiple spectral functions, thereby establishing a reference value for subsequent lattice points searching. Furthermore, the lattice point with minimal error compared to the preprocessing results is determined as the fusion result. Extensive simulation results reveal that the proposed symbol-level fusion method outperforms the benchmarking methods in localization and velocity estimation.

Learning Agent-based Modeling with LLM Companions: Experiences of Novices and Experts Using ChatGPT & NetLogo Chat

Large Language Models (LLMs) have the potential to fundamentally change the way people engage in computer programming. Agent-based modeling (ABM) has become ubiquitous in natural and social sciences and education, yet no prior studies have explored the potential of LLMs to assist it. We designed NetLogo Chat to support the learning and practice of NetLogo, a programming language for ABM. To understand how users perceive, use, and need LLM-based interfaces, we interviewed 30 participants from global academia, industry, and graduate schools. Experts reported more perceived benefits than novices and were more inclined to adopt LLMs in their workflow. We found significant differences between experts and novices in their perceptions, behaviors, and needs for human-AI collaboration. We surfaced a knowledge gap between experts and novices as a possible reason for the benefit gap. We identified guidance, personalization, and integration as major needs for LLM-based interfaces to support the programming of ABM.

Random-depth Quantum Amplitude Estimation

The maximum likelihood amplitude estimation algorithm (MLAE) is a practical solution to the quantum amplitude estimation problem with Heisenberg limit error convergence. We improve MLAE by using random depths to avoid the so-called critical points, and do numerical experiments to show that our algorithm is approximately unbiased compared to the original MLAE and approaches the Heisenberg limit better.

Unbiased quantum phase estimation

Quantum phase estimation algorithm (PEA) is one of the most important algorithms in early studies of quantum computation. It is also a key for many other quantum algorithms, such as the quantum counting algorithm and the Shor's integer factorization algorithm. However, we find that the PEA is not an unbiased estimation, which prevents the estimation error from achieving an arbitrarily small level. In this paper, we propose an unbiased phase estimation algorithm (UPEA) based on the original PEA, and study its application in quantum counting. We also show that a maximum likelihood post-processing step can further improve its robustness. In the end, we apply UPEA to quantum counting, and use an additional correction step to make the quantum counting algorithm unbiased.

Improved Quantum Supersampling for Quantum Ray Tracing

Ray tracing algorithm is a category of rendering algorithms that calculate the color of pixels by simulating the physical movements of a huge amount of rays and calculating their energies, which can be implemented in parallel. Meanwhile, the superposition and entanglement property make quantum computing a natural fit for parallel tasks. Here comes an interesting question, is the inherently parallel quantum computing able to speed up the inherently parallel ray tracing algorithm? The ray tracing problem can be regarded as a high-dimensional numerical integration problem. Suppose $N$ queries are used, classical Monte Carlo approaches has an error convergence of $O(1/\sqrt{N})$, while the quantum supersampling algorithm can achieve an error convergence of approximately $O(1/N)$. However, the outputs of the origin form of quantum supersampling obeys a probability distribution that has a long tail, which shows up as many detached abnormal noisy dots on images. In this paper, we improve quantum supersampling by replacing the QFT-based phase estimation in quantum supersampling with a robust quantum counting scheme, the QFT-based adaptive Bayesian phase estimation. We quantitatively study and compare the performances of different quantum counting schemes. Finally, we do simulation experiments to show that the quantum ray tracing with improved quantum supersampling does perform better than classical path tracing algorithm as well as the original form of quantum supersampling.

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE) mission: An overview

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE), dubbed "Xihe" - Goddess of the Sun, was launched on October 14, 2021 as the first solar space mission of China National Space Administration (CNSA). The CHASE mission is designed to test a newly developed satellite platform and to acquire the spectroscopic observations in the Hα waveband. The Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) is the scientific payload of the CHASE satellite. It consists of two observational modes: raster scanning mode and continuum imaging mode. The raster scanning mode obtains full-Sun or region-of-interest spectral images from 6559.7 to 6565.9 Å and from 6567.8 to 6570.6 Å with 0.024 Å pixel spectral resolution and 1 minute temporal resolution. The continuum imaging mode obtains photospheric images in continuum around 6689 Å with the full width at half maximum of 13.4 Å. The CHASE mission will advance our understanding of the dynamics of solar activity in the photosphere and chromosphere. In this paper, we present an overview of the CHASE mission including the scientific objectives, HIS instrument overview, data calibration flow, and first results of on-orbit observations.

A Framework for Quantum Ray Tracing

Ray tracing algorithm simulates the physical movements of a huge amount of rays to render a high quality image, in which the tracing procedure for each ray can be implemented in parallel. By leveraging the inherent parallelism of quantum computing, we propose a quantum ray tracing algorithm, which is proved to have a quadratic speedup over the classical path tracing.

Sparse group variable selection for gene-environment interactions in the longitudinal study

Penalized variable selection for high dimensional longitudinal data has received much attention as accounting for the correlation among repeated measurements and providing additional and essential information for improved identification and prediction performance. Despite the success, in longitudinal studies the potential of penalization methods is far from fully understood for accommodating structured sparsity. In this article, we develop a sparse group penalization method to conduct the bi-level gene-environment (G$\times$E) interaction study under the repeatedly measured phenotype. Within the quadratic inference function (QIF) framework, the proposed method can achieve simultaneous identification of main and interaction effects on both the group and individual level. Simulation studies have shown that the proposed method outperforms major competitors. In the case study of asthma data from the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP), we conduct G$\times$E study by using high dimensional SNP data as the Genetic factor and the longitudinal trait, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), as phenotype. Our method leads to improved prediction and identification of main and interaction effects with important implications.

Identifying Gene-environment interactions with robust marginal Bayesian variable selection

In high-throughput genetics studies, an important aim is to identify gene-environment interactions associated with the clinical outcomes. Recently, multiple marginal penalization methods have been developed and shown to be effective in G$\times$E studies. However, within the Bayesian framework, marginal variable selection has not received much attention. In this study, we propose a novel marginal Bayesian variable selection method for G$\times$E studies. In particular, our marginal Bayesian method is robust to data contamination and outliers in the outcome variables. With the incorporation of spike-and-slab priors, we have implemented the Gibbs sampler based on MCMC. The proposed method outperforms a number of alternatives in extensive simulation studies. The utility of the marginal robust Bayesian variable selection method has been further demonstrated in the case studies using data from the Nurse Health Study (NHS). Some of the identified main and interaction effects from the real data analysis have important biological implications.

Gene-Environment Interaction: A Variable Selection Perspective

Gene-environment interactions have important implications to elucidate the genetic basis of complex diseases beyond the joint function of multiple genetic factors and their interactions (or epistasis). In the past, G$\times$E interactions have been mainly conducted within the framework of genetic association studies. The high dimensionality of G$\times$E interactions, due to the complicated form of environmental effects and presence of a large number of genetic factors including gene expressions and SNPs, has motivated the recent development of penalized variable selection methods for dissecting G$\times$E interactions, which has been ignored in majority of published reviews on genetic interaction studies. In this article, we first survey existing overviews on both gene-environment and gene-gene interactions. Then, after a brief introduction on the variable selection methods, we review penalization and relevant variable selection methods in marginal and joint paradigms respectively under a variety of conceptual models. Discussions on strengths and limitations, as well as computational aspects of the variable selection methods tailored for G$\times$E studies have also been provided.

Imaging thermal conductivity with nanoscale resolution using a scanning spin probe

The ability to probe nanoscale heat flow in a material is often limited by lack of spatial resolution. Here, we use a diamond-nanocrystal-hosted nitrogen-vacancy centre attached to the apex of a silicon thermal tip as a local temperature sensor. We apply an electrical current to heat up the tip and rely on the NV to monitor the thermal changes the tip experiences as it is brought into contact with surfaces of varying thermal conductivity. With the aid of a combined AFM/confocal setup, we image phantom microstructures with nanoscale resolution, and attain excellent agreement between the thermal conductivity and topographic maps. The small mass and high thermal conductivity of the diamond host make the time response of our technique short, which we demonstrate by monitoring the tip temperature upon application of a heat pulse. Our approach promises multiple applications, from the investigation of phonon dynamics in nanostructures to the characterization of heterogeneous phase transitions and chemical reactions in various solid-state systems.

A new structure entropy of complex networks based on Tsallis nonextensive statistical mechanics

The structure entropy is one of the most important parameters to describe the structure property of the complex networks. Most of the existing struc- ture entropies are based on the degree or the betweenness centrality. In order to describe the structure property of the complex networks more reasonably, a new structure entropy of the complex networks based on the Tsallis nonextensive statistical mechanics is proposed in this paper. The influence of the degree and the betweenness centrality on the structure property is combined in the proposed structure entropy. Compared with the existing structure entropy, the proposed structure entropy is more reasonable to describe the structure property of the complex networks in some situations.
