Rethinking Persistent Homology for Visual Recognition

Persistent topological properties of an image serve as an additional descriptor providing an insight that might not be discovered by traditional neural networks. The existing research in this area focuses primarily on efficiently integrating topological properties of the data in the learning process in order to enhance the performance. However, there is no existing study to demonstrate all possible scenarios where introducing topological properties can boost or harm the performance. This paper performs a detailed analysis of the effectiveness of topological properties for image classification in various training scenarios, defined by: the number of training samples, the complexity of the training data and the complexity of the backbone network. We identify the scenarios that benefit the most from topological features, e.g., training simple networks on small datasets. Additionally, we discuss the problem of topological consistency of the datasets which is one of the major bottlenecks for using topological features for classification. We further demonstrate how the topological inconsistency can harm the performance for certain scenarios.

Study on muon MDM and lepton EDM in BLMSSM via the mass insertion approximation

In the framework of the MSSM extension with local gauged baryon and lepton numbers (BLMSSM), we calculate the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment (MDM) and lepton $(e, μ, τ)$ electric dipole moment (EDM), and discuss how the muon MDM and lepton EDM depend on the parameters within the mass insertion approximation. Among many parameters, $\tanβ$,~$g_L$,~$m_L$ and $μ_H$ are more sensitive parameters for $a^{BL}_μ$. Considering the experimental limitations, our best numerical result of $a^{BL}_μ$ is around $2.5 \times 10^{-9}$, which can well compensate the departure between the experiment data and Standard Model (SM) prediction. The CP violating phases in BLMSSM are more than those in the MSSM, including new parameters $θ_{μ_L}$ and $θ_{L}$. They can give large contributions, which play an important role in exploring the source of CP violation and probing new physics beyond SM.

INO at Factify 2: Structure Coherence based Multi-Modal Fact Verification

This paper describes our approach to the multi-modal fact verification (FACTIFY) challenge at AAAI2023. In recent years, with the widespread use of social media, fake news can spread rapidly and negatively impact social security. Automatic claim verification becomes more and more crucial to combat fake news. In fact verification involving multiple modal data, there should be a structural coherence between claim and document. Therefore, we proposed a structure coherence-based multi-modal fact verification scheme to classify fake news. Our structure coherence includes the following four aspects: sentence length, vocabulary similarity, semantic similarity, and image similarity. Specifically, CLIP and Sentence BERT are combined to extract text features, and ResNet50 is used to extract image features. In addition, we also extract the length of the text as well as the lexical similarity. Then the features were concatenated and passed through the random forest classifier. Finally, our weighted average F1 score has reached 0.8079, achieving 2nd place in FACTIFY2.

Robustness to corruption in pre-trained Bayesian neural networks

We develop ShiftMatch, a new training-data-dependent likelihood for robustness to corruption in Bayesian neural networks (BNNs). ShiftMatch is inspired by the training-data-dependent "EmpCov" priors from Izmailov et al. (2021a), and efficiently matches test-time spatial correlations to those at training time. Critically, ShiftMatch is designed to leave the neural network's training time likelihood unchanged, allowing it to use publicly available samples from pre-trained BNNs. Using pre-trained HMC samples, ShiftMatch gives strong performance improvements on CIFAR-10-C, outperforms EmpCov priors (though ShiftMatch uses extra information from a minibatch of corrupted test points), and is perhaps the first Bayesian method capable of convincingly outperforming plain deep ensembles.

OPT: One-shot Pose-Controllable Talking Head Generation

One-shot talking head generation produces lip-sync talking heads based on arbitrary audio and one source face. To guarantee the naturalness and realness, recent methods propose to achieve free pose control instead of simply editing mouth areas. However, existing methods do not preserve accurate identity of source face when generating head motions. To solve the identity mismatch problem and achieve high-quality free pose control, we present One-shot Pose-controllable Talking head generation network (OPT). Specifically, the Audio Feature Disentanglement Module separates content features from audios, eliminating the influence of speaker-specific information contained in arbitrary driving audios. Later, the mouth expression feature is extracted from the content feature and source face, during which the landmark loss is designed to enhance the accuracy of facial structure and identity preserving quality. Finally, to achieve free pose control, controllable head pose features from reference videos are fed into the Video Generator along with the expression feature and source face to generate new talking heads. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experimental results verify that OPT generates high-quality pose-controllable talking heads with no identity mismatch problem, outperforming previous SOTA methods.

Human Fall Detection- Multimodality Approach

Falls have become more frequent in recent years, which has been harmful for senior citizens. Therefore detecting falls have become important and several data sets and machine learning model have been introduced related to fall detection. In this project report, a human fall detection method is proposed using a multi modality approach. We used the UP-FALL detection data set which is collected by dozens of volunteers using different sensors and two cameras. We use wrist sensor with acclerometer data keeping labels to binary classification, namely fall and no fall from the data set.We used fusion of camera and sensor data to increase performance. The experimental results shows that using only wrist data as compared to multi sensor for binary classification did not impact the model prediction performance for fall detection.

Task2KB: A Public Task-Oriented Knowledge Base

Search engines and conversational assistants are commonly used to help users complete their every day tasks such as booking travel, cooking, etc. While there are some existing datasets that can be used for this purpose, their coverage is limited to very few domains. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge base, 'Task2KB', which is constructed using data crawled from WikiHow, an online knowledge resource offering instructional articles on a wide range of tasks. Task2KB encapsulates various types of task-related information and attributes, such as requirements, detailed step description, and available methods to complete tasks. Due to its higher coverage compared to existing related knowledge graphs, Task2KB can be highly useful in the development of general purpose task completion assistants

The study of eleven contact binaries with mass ratios less than 0.1

Multi-band photometric observations of eleven totally eclipsing contact binaries were carried out. Applying the Wilson-Devinney program, photometric solutions were obtained. There are two W-subtype systems, which are CRTS J133031.1+161202 and CRTS J154254.0+324652, and the rest systems are A-subtype systems. CRTS J154254.0+324652 has the highest fill-out factor with 94.3$\%$, and the lowest object is CRTS J155009.2+493639 with only 18.9$\%$. The mass ratios of the eleven systems are all less than 0.1, which means that they are extremely low mass ratio binary systems. We performed period variation investigation and found that the orbital periods of three systems decrease slowly, which may be caused by the angular momentum loss, and of six systems increase slowly, which indicates that the materials may transfer from the secondary component to the primary component. LAMOST low$-$resolution spectra of four objects were analyzed, and using the spectral subtraction technique, H$α$ emission line was detected, which means that the four objects exhibit chromospheric activity. In order to understand their evolutionary status, the mass-luminosity and mass-radius diagrams were plotted. The two diagrams indicate that the primary component is in the main sequence evolution stage, and the secondary component is above TAMS, indicating that they are over-luminous. To determine whether the eleven systems are in stable state, the ratio of spin angular momentum to orbital angular momentum ($J_{s}/J_{o}$) and the instability parameters were calculated, and we argued that CRTS J234634.7+222824 is on the verge of a merger.

Every-other-layer Dipolar Excitons in a Spin-Valley locked Superlattice

Monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides possess broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling, which leads to unique spin-valley locking effect. In 2H stacked pristine multilayers, the spin-valley locking yields an electronic superlattice structure, where alternating layers correspond to barrier and quantum well respectively, conditioned on the spin-valley indices. Here, we show that the spin-valley locked superlattice hosts a new kind of dipolar excitons with the electron and hole constituents separated in an every-other-layer configuration, i.e., either in two even or two odd layers. Such excitons become optically bright via hybridization with intralayer excitons, displaying multiple anti-crossing patterns in optical reflection spectrum as the dipolar exciton is tuned through the intralayer resonance by electric field. The reflectance spectra also reveal an excited state orbital of the every-other-layer exciton, pointing to a sizable binding energy in the same order of magnitude as the intralayer exciton. As layer thickness increases, the dipolar exciton can form one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard chain displaying a layer number dependent fine-structures in the reflectance spectra. Our work reveals a distinct valleytronic superlattice with highly tunable dipolar excitons for exploring light-matter interactions.

Structure-guided Image Outpainting

Deep learning techniques have made considerable progress in image inpainting, restoration, and reconstruction in the last few years. Image outpainting, also known as image extrapolation, lacks attention and practical approaches to be fulfilled, owing to difficulties caused by large-scale area loss and less legitimate neighboring information. These difficulties have made outpainted images handled by most of the existing models unrealistic to human eyes and spatially inconsistent. When upsampling through deconvolution to generate fake content, the naive generation methods may lead to results lacking high-frequency details and structural authenticity. Therefore, as our novelties to handle image outpainting problems, we introduce structural prior as a condition to optimize the generation quality and a new semantic embedding term to enhance perceptual sanity. we propose a deep learning method based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and condition edges as structural prior in order to assist the generation. We use a multi-phase adversarial training scheme that comprises edge inference training, contents inpainting training, and joint training. The newly added semantic embedding loss is proved effective in practice.

EPNet++: Cascade Bi-directional Fusion for Multi-Modal 3D Object Detection

Recently, fusing the LiDAR point cloud and camera image to improve the performance and robustness of 3D object detection has received more and more attention, as these two modalities naturally possess strong complementarity. In this paper, we propose EPNet++ for multi-modal 3D object detection by introducing a novel Cascade Bi-directional Fusion~(CB-Fusion) module and a Multi-Modal Consistency~(MC) loss. More concretely, the proposed CB-Fusion module enhances point features with plentiful semantic information absorbed from the image features in a cascade bi-directional interaction fusion manner, leading to more powerful and discriminative feature representations. The MC loss explicitly guarantees the consistency between predicted scores from two modalities to obtain more comprehensive and reliable confidence scores. The experimental results on the KITTI, JRDB and SUN-RGBD datasets demonstrate the superiority of EPNet++ over the state-of-the-art methods. Besides, we emphasize a critical but easily overlooked problem, which is to explore the performance and robustness of a 3D detector in a sparser scene. Extensive experiments present that EPNet++ outperforms the existing SOTA methods with remarkable margins in highly sparse point cloud cases, which might be an available direction to reduce the expensive cost of LiDAR sensors. Global Meets Local: Effective Multi-Label Image Classification via Category-Aware Weak Supervision

Multi-label image classification, which can be categorized into label-dependency and region-based methods, is a challenging problem due to the complex underlying object layouts. Although region-based methods are less likely to encounter issues with model generalizability than label-dependency methods, they often generate hundreds of meaningless or noisy proposals with non-discriminative information, and the contextual dependency among the localized regions is often ignored or over-simplified. This paper builds a unified framework to perform effective noisy-proposal suppression and to interact between global and local features for robust feature learning. Specifically, we propose category-aware weak supervision to concentrate on non-existent categories so as to provide deterministic information for local feature learning, restricting the local branch to focus on more high-quality regions of interest. Moreover, we develop a cross-granularity attention module to explore the complementary information between global and local features, which can build the high-order feature correlation containing not only global-to-local, but also local-to-local relations. Both advantages guarantee a boost in the performance of the whole network. Extensive experiments on two large-scale datasets (MS-COCO and VOC 2007) demonstrate that our framework achieves superior performance over state-of-the-art methods.

Rethinking Annotation Granularity for Overcoming Shortcuts in Deep Learning-based Radiograph Diagnosis: A Multicenter Study

Two DL models were developed using radiograph-level annotations (yes or no disease) and fine-grained lesion-level annotations (lesion bounding boxes), respectively named CheXNet and CheXDet. The models' internal classification performance and lesion localization performance were compared on a testing set (n=2,922), external classification performance was compared on NIH-Google (n=4,376) and PadChest (n=24,536) datasets, and external lesion localization performance was compared on NIH-ChestX-ray14 dataset (n=880). The models were also compared to radiologists on a subset of the internal testing set (n=496). Given sufficient training data, both models performed comparably to radiologists. CheXDet achieved significant improvement for external classification, such as in classifying fracture on NIH-Google (CheXDet area under the ROC curve [AUC]: 0.67, CheXNet AUC: 0.51; p<.001) and PadChest (CheXDet AUC: 0.78, CheXNet AUC: 0.55; p<.001). CheXDet achieved higher lesion detection performance than CheXNet for most abnormalities on all datasets, such as in detecting pneumothorax on the internal set (CheXDet jacknife alternative free-response ROC-figure of merit [JAFROC-FOM]: 0.87, CheXNet JAFROC-FOM: 0.13; p<.001) and NIH-ChestX-ray14 (CheXDet JAFROC-FOM: 0.55, CheXNet JAFROC-FOM: 0.04; p<.001). To summarize, fine-grained annotations overcame shortcut learning and enabled DL models to identify correct lesion patterns, improving the models' generalizability.

Rethinking the Metric in Few-shot Learning: From an Adaptive Multi-Distance Perspective

Few-shot learning problem focuses on recognizing unseen classes given a few labeled images. In recent effort, more attention is paid to fine-grained feature embedding, ignoring the relationship among different distance metrics. In this paper, for the first time, we investigate the contributions of different distance metrics, and propose an adaptive fusion scheme, bringing significant improvements in few-shot classification. We start from a naive baseline of confidence summation and demonstrate the necessity of exploiting the complementary property of different distance metrics. By finding the competition problem among them, built upon the baseline, we propose an Adaptive Metrics Module (AMM) to decouple metrics fusion into metric-prediction fusion and metric-losses fusion. The former encourages mutual complementary, while the latter alleviates metric competition via multi-task collaborative learning. Based on AMM, we design a few-shot classification framework AMTNet, including the AMM and the Global Adaptive Loss (GAL), to jointly optimize the few-shot task and auxiliary self-supervised task, making the embedding features more robust. In the experiment, the proposed AMM achieves 2% higher performance than the naive metrics fusion module, and our AMTNet outperforms the state-of-the-arts on multiple benchmark datasets.

Hydra -- A Federated Data Repository over NDN

Today's big data science communities manage their data publication and replication at the application layer. These communities utilize myriad mechanisms to publish, discover, and retrieve datasets - the result is an ecosystem of either centralized, or otherwise a collection of ad-hoc data repositories. Publishing datasets to centralized repositories can be process-intensive, and those repositories do not accept all datasets. The ad-hoc repositories are difficult to find and utilize due to differences in data names, metadata standards, and access methods. To address the problem of scientific data publication and storage, we have designed Hydra, a secure, distributed, and decentralized data repository made of a loose federation of storage servers (nodes) provided by user communities. Hydra runs over Named Data Networking (NDN) and utilizes the State Vector Sync (SVS) protocol that lets individual nodes maintain a "global view" of the system. Hydra provides a scalable and resilient data retrieval service, with data distribution scalability achieved via NDN's built-in data anycast and in-network caching and resiliency against individual server failures through automated failure detection and maintaining a specific degree of replication. Hydra utilizes "Favor", a locally calculated numerical value to decide which nodes will replicate a file. Finally, Hydra utilizes data-centric security for data publication and node authentication. Hydra uses a Network Operation Center (NOC) to bootstrap trust in Hydra nodes and data publishers. The NOC distributes user and node certificates and performs the proof-of-possession challenges. This technical report serves as the reference for Hydra. It outlines the design decisions, the rationale behind them, the functional modules, and the protocol specifications.

MetaASSIST: Robust Dialogue State Tracking with Meta Learning

Existing dialogue datasets contain lots of noise in their state annotations. Such noise can hurt model training and ultimately lead to poor generalization performance. A general framework named ASSIST has recently been proposed to train robust dialogue state tracking (DST) models. It introduces an auxiliary model to generate pseudo labels for the noisy training set. These pseudo labels are combined with vanilla labels by a common fixed weighting parameter to train the primary DST model. Notwithstanding the improvements of ASSIST on DST, tuning the weighting parameter is challenging. Moreover, a single parameter shared by all slots and all instances may be suboptimal. To overcome these limitations, we propose a meta learning-based framework MetaASSIST to adaptively learn the weighting parameter. Specifically, we propose three schemes with varying degrees of flexibility, ranging from slot-wise to both slot-wise and instance-wise, to convert the weighting parameter into learnable functions. These functions are trained in a meta-learning manner by taking the validation set as meta data. Experimental results demonstrate that all three schemes can achieve competitive performance. Most impressively, we achieve a state-of-the-art joint goal accuracy of 80.10% on MultiWOZ 2.4.

Photometric and spectroscopic studies of the long period low mass ratio deep contact binary KN Per

The photometric analysis and spectroscopic study of the long period low mass ratio deep contact binary KN Per were executed. The light curves of BV(RI)$_c$-band were from the Ningbo Bureau of Education and Xinjiang Observatory Telescope (NEXT) at the Xingming Observatory. Through the analysis of Wilson-Devinney (W-D) program, KN Per was found as an A-type low mass ratio deep contact binary (q=0.236, f=53.4\%). A cool spot applied on the primary component was introduced to explain the unequal maxima of the light curve. Based on the O-C analysis, we found that the rate of the increasing orbital period is $\dot{P}$ = 5.12 $\pm$ (0.30) $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ d/yr, meaning the mass transfer from the secondary component to the primary one. By analyzing the spectroscopic data, we detected chromospheric activity emission line indicators, which is corresponding to the light-curve analysis. 71 long period (P $>$ 0.5 days) contact binaries including our target were collected. The evolutionary states of all collected stars were investigated by the illustrations of mass-radius, mass-luminosity, and log M$_{T}$ - log J$_{o}$. The relations of some physical parameters were also determined. With the instability parameters of KN Per, we determined that it is a stable contact binary system at present.
