Identifying Cancer Patients at Risk for Heart Failure Using Machine Learning Methods

Cardiotoxicity related to cancer therapies has become a serious issue, diminishing cancer treatment outcomes and quality of life. Early detection of cancer patients at risk for cardiotoxicity before cardiotoxic treatments and providing preventive measures are potential solutions to improve cancer patients's quality of life. This study focuses on predicting the development of heart failure in cancer patients after cancer diagnoses using historical electronic health record (EHR) data. We examined four machine learning algorithms using 143,199 cancer patients from the University of Florida Health (UF Health) Integrated Data Repository (IDR). We identified a total number of 1,958 qualified cases and matched them to 15,488 controls by gender, age, race, and major cancer type. Two feature encoding strategies were compared to encode variables as machine learning features. The gradient boosting (GB) based model achieved the best AUC score of 0.9077 (with a sensitivity of 0.8520 and a specificity of 0.8138), outperforming other machine learning methods. We also looked into the subgroup of cancer patients with exposure to chemotherapy drugs and observed a lower specificity score (0.7089). The experimental results show that machine learning methods are able to capture clinical factors that are known to be associated with heart failure and that it is feasible to use machine learning methods to identify cancer patients at risk for cancer therapy-related heart failure.

Directing DNNs Attention for Facial Attribution Classification using Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have a high accuracy on image classification tasks. However, DNNs trained by such dataset with co-occurrence bias may rely on wrong features while making decisions for classification. It will greatly affect the transferability of pre-trained DNNs. In this paper, we propose an interactive method to direct classifiers paying attentions to the regions that are manually specified by the users, in order to mitigate the influence of co-occurrence bias. We test on CelebA dataset, the pre-trained AlexNet is fine-tuned to focus on the specific facial attributes based on the results of Grad-CAM.

Hardware-Constrained Millimeter Wave Systems for 5G: Challenges, Opportunities, and Solutions

Although millimeter wave (mmWave) systems promise to offer larger bandwidth and unprecedented peak data rates, their practical implementation faces several hardware challenges compared to sub-6 GHz communication systems. These hardware constraints can seriously undermine the performance and deployment progress of mmWave systems and, thus, necessitate disruptive solutions in the cross-design of analog and digital modules. In this article, we discuss the importance of different hardware constraints and propose a novel system architecture, which is able to release these hardware constraints while achieving better performance for future millimeter wave communication systems. The characteristics of the proposed architecture are articulated in detail, and a representative example is provided to demonstrate its validity and efficacy.

G-SMOTE: A GMM-based synthetic minority oversampling technique for imbalanced learning

Imbalanced Learning is an important learning algorithm for the classification models, which have enjoyed much popularity on many applications. Typically, imbalanced learning algorithms can be partitioned into two types, i.e., data level approaches and algorithm level approaches. In this paper, the focus is to develop a robust synthetic minority oversampling technique which falls the umbrella of data level approaches. On one hand, we proposed a method to generate synthetic samples in a high dimensional feature space, instead of a linear sampling space. On the other hand, in the proposed imbalanced learning framework, Gaussian Mixture Model is employed to distinguish the outliers from minority class instances and filter out the synthetic majority class instances. Last and more importantly, an adaptive optimization method is proposed to optimize these parameters in sampling process. By doing so, an effectiveness and efficiency imbalanced learning framework is developed.

Controlling spectral energies of all harmonics in programmable way using time-domain digital coding metasurface

Modern wireless communication is one of the most important information technologies, but its system architecture has been unchanged for many years. Here, we propose a much simpler architecture for wireless communication systems based on metasurface. We firstly propose a time-domain digital coding metasurface to reach a simple but efficient method to manipulate spectral distributions of harmonics. Under dynamic modulations of phases on surface reflectivity, we could achieve accurate controls to different harmonics in a programmable way to reach many unusual functions like frequency cloaking and velocity illusion, owing to the temporal gradient introduced by digital signals encoded by '0' and '1' sequences. A theoretical model is presented and experimentally validated to reveal the nonlinear process. Based on the time-domain digital coding metasurface, we propose and realize a new wireless communication system in binary frequency-shift keying (BFSK) frame, which has much more simplified architecture than the traditional BFSK with excellent performance for real-time message transmission. The presented work, from new concept to new system, will find important applications in modern information technologies.

Saliency deep embedding for aurora image search

Deep neural networks have achieved remarkable success in the field of image search. However, the state-of-the-art algorithms are trained and tested for natural images captured with ordinary cameras. In this paper, we aim to explore a new search method for images captured with circular fisheye lens, especially the aurora images. To reduce the interference from uninformative regions and focus on the most interested regions, we propose a saliency proposal network (SPN) to replace the region proposal network (RPN) in the recent Mask R-CNN. In our SPN, the centers of the anchors are not distributed in a rectangular meshing manner, but exhibit spherical distortion. Additionally, the directions of the anchors are along the deformation lines perpendicular to the magnetic meridian, which perfectly accords with the imaging principle of circular fisheye lens. Extensive experiments are performed on the big aurora data, demonstrating the superiority of our method in both search accuracy and efficiency.

A Low-Resolution ADC Module Assisted Hybrid Beamforming Architecture for mmWave Communications

We propose a low-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) module assisted hybrid beamforming architecture for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications. We prove that the proposed low-cost and flexible architecture can reduce the beam training time and complexity dramatically without degradation in the data transmission performance. In addition, we design a fast beam training method which is suitable for the proposed system architecture. The proposed beam training method requires only L + 1 (where L is the number of paths) time slots which is smaller compared to the state-of-the-art.

RaPro: A Novel 5G Rapid Prototyping System Architecture

We propose a novel fifth-generation (5G) rapid prototyping (RaPro) system architecture by combining FPGA-privileged modules from a software defined radio (or FPGA-coprocessor) and high-level programming language for advanced algorithms from multi-core general purpose processors. The proposed system architecture exhibits excellent flexibility and scalability in the development of a 5G prototyping system. As a proof of concept, a multi-user full-dimension multiple-input and multiple-output system is established based on the proposed architecture. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed architecture in large-scale antenna and wideband communication systems.

Design and Implementation of a TDD-Based 128-Antenna Massive MIMO Prototyping System

Spurred by the dramatic mobile IP growth and the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud-based applications, wireless networking is witnessing a paradigm shift. By fully exploiting the spatial degrees of freedom, the massive multipleinput- multiple-output (MIMO) technology promises significant gains in both data rates and link reliability. This paper presents a time-division duplex (TDD)-based 128-antenna massive MIMO prototyping system designed to operate on a 20 MHz bandwidth. Up to twelve single-antenna users can be served by the designed system at the same time. System model is provided and link-level simulation corresponding to our practical TDDbased massive MIMO prototyping system is conducted to validate our design and performance of the algorithms. Based on the system hardware design demonstrated in this paper, both uplink real-time video and downlink data transmissions are realized, and the experiment results show that 268.8 Mbps rate was achieved for eight single-antenna users using QPSK modulation. The maximum spectral efficiency of the designed system will be 80.64 bit/s/Hz by twelve single-antenna users with 256-QAM modulation.

The WR-HSS iteration method for a system of linear differential equations and its applications to the unsteady discrete elliptic problem

We consider the numerical method for non-self-adjoint positive definite linear differential equations, and its application to the unsteady discrete elliptic problem, which is derived from spatial discretization of the unsteady elliptic problem with Dirichlet boundary condition. Based on the idea of the alternating direction implicit (ADI) iteration technique and the Hermitian/skew-Hermitian splitting (HSS), we establish a waveform relaxation (WR) iteration method for solving the non-self-adjoint positive definite linear differential equations, called the WR-HSS method. We analyze the convergence property of the WR-HSS method, and prove that the WR-HSS method is unconditionally convergent to the solution of the system of linear differential equations. In addition, we derive the upper bound of the contraction factor of the WR-HSS method in each iteration which is only dependent on the Hermitian part of the corresponding non-self-adjoint positive definite linear differential operator. Finally, the applications of the WR-HSS method to the unsteady discrete elliptic problem demonstrate its effectiveness and the correctness of the theoretical results.

Simultaneous linear optics and coupling correction for storage rings with turn-by-turn beam position monitor data

We propose a method to simultaneously correct linear optics errors and linear coupling for storage rings using turn-by-turn (TbT) beam position monitor (BPM) data. The independent component analysis (ICA) method is used to isolate the betatron normal modes from the measured TbT BPM data. The betatron amplitudes and phase advances of the projections of the normal modes on the horizontal and vertical planes are then extracted, which, combined with dispersion measurement, are used to fit the lattice model. The fitting results are used for lattice correction. The method has been successfully demonstrated on the NSLS-II storage ring.

Discrete-Time Accelerated Block Successive Overrelaxation Methods for Time-Dependent Stokes Equations

To further study the application of waveform relaxation methods in fluid dynamics in actual computation, this paper provides a general theoretical analysis of discrete-time waveform relaxation methods for solving linear DAEs. A class of discrete-time waveform relaxation methods, named discrete-time accelerated block successive overrelaxation (DABSOR) methods, is proposed for solving linear DAEs derived from discretizing time-dependent Stokes equations in space by using "Method of Lines". The analysis of convergence property and optimality of the DABSOR method are presented in detail. The theoretical results and the efficiency of the DABSOR method are verified by numerical experiments.

Capacity analysis of a multi-cell multi-antenna cooperative cellular network with co-channel interference

Characterization and modeling of co-channel interference is critical for the design and performance evaluation of realistic multi-cell cellular networks. In this paper, based on alpha stable processes, an analytical co-channel interference model is proposed for multi-cell multiple-input multi-output (MIMO) cellular networks. The impact of different channel parameters on the new interference model is analyzed numerically. Furthermore, the exact normalized downlink average capacity is derived for a multi-cell MIMO cellular network with co-channel interference. Moreover, the closed-form normalized downlink average capacity is derived for cell-edge users in the multi-cell multiple-input single-output (MISO) cooperative cellular network with co-channel interference. From the new co-channel interference model and capacity, the impact of cooperative antennas and base stations on cell-edge user performance in the multi-cell multi-antenna cellular network is investigated by numerical methods. Numerical results show that cooperative transmission can improve the capacity performance of multi-cell multi-antenna cooperative cellular networks, especially in a scenario with a high density of interfering base stations. The capacity performance gain is degraded with the increased number of cooperative antennas or base stations.

An improved method to test the Distance--Duality relation

Many researchers have performed cosmological-model-independent tests for the distance duality (DD) relation. Theoretical work has been conducted based on the results of these tests. However, we find that almost all of these tests were perhaps not cosmological-model-independent after all, because the distance moduli taken from a given type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) compilation are dependent on a given cosmological model and Hubble constant. In this Letter, we overcome these defects and by creating a new cosmological-model-independent test for the DD relation. We use the original data from the Union2 SNe Ia compilation and the angular diameter distances from two galaxy cluster samples compiled by De Filippis et al. and Bonamente et al. to test the DD relation. Our results suggest that the DD relation is compatible with observations, and the spherical model is slightly better than the elliptical model at describing the intrinsic shape of galaxy clusters if the DD relation is valid. However, these results are different from those of previous work.

Maximizing Spectral Flux from Self-Seeding Hard X-ray FELs

Fully coherent x-rays can be generated by self-seeding x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). Self-seeding by a forward Bragg diffraction (FBD) monochromator has been recently proposed [1] and demonstrated [2]. Characteristic time To of FBD determines the power, spectral, and time characteristics of the FBD seed [3]. Here we show that for a given electron bunch with duration sigma_e the spectral flux of the self-seeding XFEL can be maximized, and the spectral bandwidth can be respectively minimized by choosing To ~ sigma_e/pi and by optimizing the electron bunch delay tau_e. The choices of To and tau_e are not unique. In all cases, the maximum value of the spectral flux and the minimum bandwidth are primarily determined by sigma_e. Two-color seeding takes place To >> sigma_e/π. The studies are performed, for a Gaussian electron bunch distribution with the parameters, close to those used in the short-bunch (sigma_e ~ 5 fs) and long-bunch (sigma_e ~ 20 fs) operation modes of the LCLS XFEL.

Constraining smoothness parameter and the DD relation of Dyer-Roeder equation with supernovae

Our real universe is locally inhomogeneous. Dyer and Roeder introduced the smoothness parameter $α$ to describe the influence of local inhomogeneity on angular diameter distance, and they obtained the angular diameter distance-redshift approximate relation (Dyer-Roeder equation) for locally inhomogeneous universe. Furthermore, the Distance-Duality (DD) relation, $D_L(z)(1+z)^{-2}/D_A(z)=1$, should be valid for all cosmological models that are described by Riemannian geometry, where $D_L$ and $D_A$ are, respectively, the luminosity and angular distance distances. Therefore, it is necessary to test whether if the Dyer-Roeder approximate equation can satisfy the Distance-Duality relation. In this paper, we use Union2.1 SNe Ia data to constrain the smoothness parameter $α$ and test whether the Dyer-Roeder equation satisfies the DD relation. By using $χ^2$ minimization, we get $α=0.92_{-0.32}^{+0.08}$ at $1σ$ and $0.92_{-0.65}^{+0.08}$ at $2σ$, and our results show that the Dyer-Roeder equation is in good consistency with the DD relation at $1σ$.

Study Report of the Booster Transition Jump System

There are more than 15 years since the transition-jump system (TJS) was installed. Because of the quad steering, which is caused by the beam not being well centered through all the gamma-T quads, the TJS has never been used in the operation. Based upon the recent calculation, the short 12 gamma-T quad had the worst offset in the vertical direction, and it was lowered 4 mm. Afterwards, the orbit error caused by the gamma-T quad steering has been largely removed, and this encourages our efforts of commissioning the TJS to reach its design goal.
