Quenched asymptotics for Brownian motion in generalized Gaussian potential

In this paper, we study the long-term asymptotics for the quenched moment \[\mathbb{E}_x\exp \biggl\{\int_0^tV(B_s)\,ds\biggr\}\] consisting of a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion $\{B_s;s\ge 0\}$ and a generalized Gaussian field $V$. The major progress made in this paper includes: Solution to an open problem posted by Carmona and Molchanov [Probab. Theory Related Fields 102 (1995) 433-453], the quenched laws for Brownian motions in Newtonian-type potentials and in the potentials driven by white noise or by fractional white noise.

Polarization Dependent Loss and All-Optical Modulation in Graphene on Suspended Membrane Waveguides

We observe a strong polarization dependent optical loss of in-plane light propagation in silicon waveguide due to the presence of graphene. Both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes are efficiently (~3 dB) coupled to the graphene on suspended membrane waveguides using an apodized focusing subwavelength grating. The TE mode has 7.7 dB less excess optical loss than the TM mode at 1.5 μm for a 150 μm long waveguide in good agreement with a theoretical model. All-optical modulation of light is demonstrated. There is also a large thermally induced change in waveguide effective index because of optical absorption in graphene.

Quenched asymptotics for Brownian motion of renormalized Poisson potential and for the related parabolic Anderson models

Let $B_s$ be a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and $ω(dx)$ be an independent Poisson field on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The almost sure asymptotics for the logarithmic moment generating function [\log\math bb{E}_0\exp\biggl{\pmθ\int_0^t\bar{V}(B_s) ds\biggr}\qquad (t\to\infty)] are investigated in connection with the renormalized Poisson potential of the form [\bar{V}(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}{\frac{1}{|y-x|^p}}[ω(dy)-dy],\qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^d.] The investigation is motivated by some practical problems arising from the models of Brownian motion in random media and from the parabolic Anderson models.

Spatial Brownian motion in renormalized Poisson potential: A critical case

Let $B_s$ be a three dimensional Brownian motion and $ω(dx)$ be an independent Poisson field on $\mathbb{R}^3$. It is proved that for any $t>0$, conditionally on $ω(\cdot)$, \label{*} \mathbb{E}_0 \exp\{θ\int_0^t \bar{V}(B_s) ds\} \ < \infty \ a.s. & \text{if} θ< 1/16, \medskip = \infty \ a.s. & \text{if} θ> 1/16, where $\bar{V}(x)$ is the renormalized Poisson potential $$ \bar{V}(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^3} \frac{1}{| x-y |^2} \big[ω(dy)-dy\big]. $$ Then the long term behavior of the quenched exponential moment \eqref{*} is determined for $θ\in (0, 1/16)$ in the form of integral tests. This paper exhibits and builds upon the interrelation between the exponential moment \eqref{*} and the celebrated Hardy's inequality $$ \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} \frac{f^2(x)}{| x |^2} dx \le 4 \|\nabla f\|_2^2, 2in f \in W^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^3). $$

Large deviations for local times and intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions and Riemann-Liouville processes

In this paper we prove exact forms of large deviations for local times and intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions and Riemann-Liouville processes. We also show that a fractional Brownian motion and the related Riemann-Liouville process behave like constant multiples of each other with regard to large deviations for their local and intersection local times. As a consequence of our large deviation estimates, we derive laws of iterated logarithm for the corresponding local times. The key points of our methods: (1) logarithmic superadditivity of a normalized sequence of moments of exponentially randomized local time of a fractional Brownian motion; (2) logarithmic subadditivity of a normalized sequence of moments of exponentially randomized intersection local time of Riemann-Liouville processes; (3) comparison of local and intersection local times based on embedding of a part of a fractional Brownian motion into the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of the Riemann-Liouville process.

Large deviations and renormalization for Riesz potentials of stable intersection measures

We study the object formally defined as γ\big([0,t]^{2}\big)=\int\int_{[0,t]^{2}} | X_{s}- X_{r}|^{-σ} dr ds-E\int\int_{[0,t]^{2}} | X_{s}- X_{r}|^{-σ} dr ds, where $X_{t}$ is the symmetric stable processes of index $0<β\le 2$ in $R^{d}$. When $β\leσ<\displaystyle\min \Big\{{3\over 2}β, d\Big\}$, this has to be defined as a limit, in the spirit of renormalized self-intersection local time. We obtain results about the large deviations and laws of the iterated logarithm for $γ$. This is applied to obtain results about stable processes in random potentials.

A CLT for the L^{2} modulus of continuity of Brownian local time

Let $\{L^{x}_{t} ; (x,t)\in R^{1}\times R^{1}_{+}\}$ denote the local time of Brownian motion and \[ α_{t}:=\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} (L^{x}_{t})^{2} dx . \] Let $η=N(0,1)$ be independent of $α_{t}$. For each fixed $t$ \[ {\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} (L^{x+h}_{t}- L^{x}_{t})^{2} dx- 4ht\over h^{3/2}} \stackrel{\mathcal{L}}{\to}({64 \over 3})^{1/2}\sqrt{α_{t}} η, \] as $h\rar 0$. Equivalently \[ {\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} (L^{x+1}_{t}- L^{x}_{t})^{2} dx- 4t\over t^{3/4}} \stackrel{\mathcal{L}}{\to}({64 \over 3} )^{1/2}\sqrt{α_{1}} η, \] as $t\rar\infty$.

Limit laws for the energy of a charged polymer

In this paper we obtain the central limit theorems, moderate deviations and the laws of the iterated logarithm for the energy \[H_n=\sum_{1\le j<k\le n}ω_jω_k1_{\{S_j=S_k\}}\] of the polymer $\{S_1,...,S_n\}$ equipped with random electrical charges $\{ω_1,...,ω_n\}$. Our approach is based on comparison of the moments between $H_n$ and the self-intersection local time \[Q_n=\sum_{1\le j<k\le n}1_{\{S_j=S_k\}}\] run by the $d$-dimensional random walk $\{S_k\}$. As partially needed for our main objective and partially motivated by their independent interest, the central limit theorems and exponential integrability for $Q_n$ are also investigated in the case $d\ge3$.

Large deviations and laws of the iterated logarithm for the local times of additive stable processes

We study the upper tail behaviors of the local times of the additive stable processes. Let $X_1(t),...,X_p(t)$ be independent, d-dimensional symmetric stable processes with stable index $0<α\le 2$ and consider the additive stable process $\bar{X}(t_1,...,t_p)=X_1(t_1)+... +X_p(t_p)$. Under the condition $d<αp$, we obtain a precise form of the large deviation principle for the local time \[η^x([0,t]^p)=\int_0^t...\int_0^tδ_x\bigl(X_1(s_1)+... +X_p(s_p)\bigr) ds_1... ds_p\] of the multiparameter process $\bar{X}(t_1,...,t_p)$, and for its supremum norm $\sup_{x\in\mathbb{R}^d}η^x([0,t]^p)$. Our results apply to the law of the iterated logarithm and our approach is based on Fourier analysis, moment computation and time exponentiation.

Moderate deviations for the range of planar random walks

Given a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ with finite second moments, let $R_n$ be the range of the random walk up to time $n$. We study moderate deviations for $R_n -E R_n$ and $E R_n -R_n$. We also derive the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.

Moderate deviations and laws of the iterated logarithm for the renormalized self-intersection local times of planar random walks

Let B_n be the number of self-intersections of a symmetric random walk with finite second moments in the integer planar lattice. We obtain moderate deviation estimates for B_n - E B_n and E B_n- B_n, which are given in terms of the best constant of a certain Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. We also prove the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.

Exponential asymptotics and law of the iterated logarithm for intersection local times of random walks

Let α([0,1]^p) denote the intersection local time of p independent d-dimensional Brownian motions running up to the time 1. Under the conditions p(d-2)<d and d\ge 2, we prove lim_{t\to\infty}t^{-1}\log P\bigl{α([0,1]^p)\ge t^{(d(p-1))/2}\bigr}=-γ_α(d,p) with the right-hand side being identified in terms of the the best constant of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. Within the scale of moderate deviations, we also establish the precise tail asymptotics for the intersection local time I_n=#{(k_1,...,k_p)\in [1,n]^p;S_1(k_1)=... =S_p(k_p)} run by the independent, symmetric, Z^d-valued random walks S_1(n),...,S_p(n). Our results apply to the law of the iterated logarithm. Our approach is based on Feynman-Kac type large deviation, time exponentiation, moment computation and some technologies along the lines of probability in Banach space. As an interesting coproduct, we obtain the inequality \bigl(EI_{n_1+... +n_a}^m\bigr)^{1/p}\le \sum_{k_1+... +k_a=m\limits_{k_1,...,k_a\ge 0}}\frac{m!}{k_1!... k_a!}\bigl(EI_{n_1}^{k_1}\bigr)^{1/p}... \bigl(EI_{n_a}^{k_a}\bigr)^{1/p} in the case of random walks.
