Interstitial-Electron Altermagnetism in Two Dimensions

Altermagnetism has so far been associated with compensated magnetic moments carried by atoms. Here we introduce Stoner instability induced interstitial-electron altermagnetism, a distinct mechanism in which altermagnetic order is carried instead by interstitial anionic electrons in electrides. We show that, owing to the quasi-nucleus-free nature of interstitial electrons, the Stoner instability in electrides hosting two interstitial electrons can naturally stabilize an altermagnetic state rather than the conventional ferromagnetic one. This mechanism leads to a practical design principle for two-dimensional materials, from which we identify monolayers Zr2N and Ti2N as representative candidates. The strong sensitivity of interstitial electrons to cavity size enables efficient strain control of the altermagnetic order and a pronounced piezo-altermagnetic effect. Moreover, we investigate the evolution of the magnetism in Zr2N under ultrafast laser excitation, which exhibits dynamics distinct from those in all previously reported magnetic materials where magnetism is carried by real atoms. Our work not only offers a novel pathway to realize altermagnetism but also reveals an efficient non-magnetic route for its control.

Quantization-Aware Neuromorphic Architecture for Skin Lesion Classification on Resource-Constrained Devices

On-device skin lesion analysis is constrained by the compute and energy cost of conventional CNN inference and by the need for lightweight calibration under clinical data shift. Neuromorphic processors provide event-driven sparse computation, but practical deployment is often limited by CNN-to-SNN conversion failures, including unsupported operators, quantization distortion, and accuracy degradation under class imbalance. We propose QANA, a quantization-aware CNN backbone within an end-to-end pipeline for conversion-stable neuromorphic execution. QANA improves conversion robustness by bounding intermediate activations, aligning normalization with low-bit quantization, and replacing conversion-fragile components with spike-compatible transformations. Efficient representation is achieved through Ghost-based feature generation, spatially-aware efficient channel attention, and squeeze-and-excitation modules whose operations can be quantized, folded, or lowered into integer graph operations. The quantized projection head produces SNN-ready logits and supports lightweight readout calibration without full retraining or data offloading. On HAM10000, QANA achieves 91.6% Top-1 accuracy and 91.0% macro F1, improving the strongest converted SNN baseline by 3.5 points in accuracy and 12.1 points in macro F1. On a clinical dataset, QANA achieves 90.8% Top-1 accuracy and 81.7% macro F1, improving the strongest baseline by 3.2 points in accuracy and 3.6 points in macro F1. On BrainChip Akida, QANA runs in 1.5 ms with 1.7 mJ per image, outperforming the strongest size-matched Akida baseline by 4.1 points in accuracy, 10.0 points in macro F1, 21.1% in latency, and 22.7% in energy.

3D carbon allotropes: Topological quantum materials with obstructed atomic insulating phases, multiple bulk-boundary correspondences, and real topology

The study of topological phases with unconventional bulk-boundary correspondences and nontrivial real Chern number has garnered significant attention in the topological states of matter. Using the first-principle calculations and theoretical analysis, we perform a high-throughput material screening of the 3D obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) and 3D real Chern insulators (RCIs) based on the Samara Carbon Allotrope Database (SACADA). Results show that 422 out of 703 3D carbon allotropes are 3D OAIs with multiple bulk-boundary correspondences, including 2D obstructed surface states (OSSs) and 1D hinge states, which are in one dimension and two dimensions lower than the 3D bulk, respectively. The 2D OSSs in these OAIs can be modified when subjected to appropriate boundaries, which benefits the investigation of surface engineering and the development of efficient topological catalysts. These 422 OAIs, which have 2D and 1D boundary states, are excellent platforms for multi-dimensional topological boundaries research. Remarkably, 138 of 422 OAIs are also 3D RCIs, which show a nontrivial real topology in the protection of spacetime inversion symmetry. Our work not only provides a comprehensive list of 3D carbon-based OAIs and RCIs, but also guides their application in various aspects based on multiple bulk-boundary correspondences and real topological phases.
