Spatial nonlocality imaging via metasurface

Bell nonlocality is both a defining signature of entanglement and a key quantum information resource. However, visualizing and certifying nonlocal correlations across a spatially multimode photonic field remains challenging due to the rapidly growing measurement cost of spatially resolved projective tests. To address this issue, we build a spatial nonlocality imaging scheme that directly reveals the spatial distribution of quantum nonlocality by integrating a metasurface that performs parallel polarization projections with a quantum-adaptive neural network. Spatially resolved Clauser--Horne--Shimony--Holt (CHSH) tests are realized over a 400-pixel biphoton field using an average of only 1.7 detected coincidence pairs per pixel per basis. This approach yields a nonlocality image that maps the two-dimensional spatial distribution of Bell violations across the optical field and reveals the target-state-dependent spatial evolution of Bell violations. It provides a highly resource-efficient route to large-scale Bell certification and opens new possibilities for exploiting spatially multimode entanglement in quantum imaging, quantum networking, and scalable photonic quantum technologies.

Recurrence and coefficient inequality for the partial Petrial polynomial of graphs

The partial Petrial polynomial of a ribbon graph, introduced by Gross, Mansour and Tucker, enumerates partial Petrials by Euler genus. Recently, Deng, Jin and Yan defined an analogue for grafts and showed that it can be expressed as a rank-generating function of an adjacency matrix. In this paper we first prove a recurrence relation that reduces the partial Petrial polynomial of a graph with respect to an arbitrary edge, expressing it as a sum of three terms involving graphs obtained by local complementation and edge pivoting. This recurrence extends the known leaf-reduction formula to vertices of any positive degree. Second, using this recurrence we compare the lowest and highest degree coefficients of the polynomial. We prove that the lowest coefficient is always at most the highest coefficient, and that equality holds if and only if the graph has no edges.

Pristine graphene as a catalyst in reactions with organics containing C=O bonds

Pristine graphene is thought lack of catalytic activity up to date, although using graphene-plus-heteroatom materials as catalysts has become a subject of intensive research because it can be metal saving, eco-friendly and ultimately sustainable. Here we report observations of catalytic reactions of high-quality, clean, pristine graphene when immersed into organics containing C=O bonds, like acetone, acetic acid and acetaldehyde. The C=O bonds were found to break and form polymers including polyethers. The reaction rate is highly temperature dependent. The reaction products mainly physically adsorb on graphene and do not cause increase of defect density in graphene, hence graphene retains its intrinsic properties. This new catalysis shall not only find practical importance but also deepen our understanding on the role of graphene in all graphene based catalysis.

Excluded checkerboard colourable ribbon graph minors

In this paper, we first introduce the notions of checkerboard colourable minors for ribbon graphs motivated by the Eulerian ribbon graph minors, and two kinds of bipartite minors for ribbon graphs, one of which is the dual of the checkerboard colourable minors and the other is motivated by the bipartite minors of abstract graphs. Then we give an excluded minor characterization of the class of checkerboard colourable ribbon graphs, bipartite ribbon graphs, plane checkerboard colourable ribbon graphs and plane bipartite ribbon graphs.

Characterization of regular checkerboard colourable twisted duals of ribbon graphs

The geometric dual of a cellularly embedded graph is a fundamental concept in graph theory and also appears in many other branches of mathematics. The partial dual is an essential generalization which can be obtained by forming the geometric dual with respect to only a subset of edges of a cellularly embedded graph. The twisted dual is a further generalization by combining the partial Petrial. Given a ribbon graph $G$, in this paper, we first characterize regular partial duals of the ribbon graph $G$ by using spanning quasi-tree and its related shorter marking arrow sequence set. Then we characterize checkerboard colourable partial Petrials for any Eulerian ribbon graph by using spanning trees and a related notion of adjoint set. Finally we give a complete characterization of all regular checkerboard colourable twisted duals of a ribbon graph, which solve a problem raised by Ellis-Monaghan and Moffatt [T. Am. Math. Soc., 364(3) (2012), 1529-1569].

The thickness of the Kronecker product of graphs

The thickness of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of planar subgraphs whose union is $G$. In this paper, we present sharp lower and upper bounds for the thickness of the Kronecker product $G\times H$ of two graphs $G$ and $H$. We also give the exact thickness numbers for the Kronecker product graphs $K_n\times K_2$, $K_{m,n}\times K_2$ and $K_{n,n,n}\times K_2$.

The Thickness of K_1,n,n and K_2,n,n

The thickness of a graph G is the minimum number of planar subgraphs whose union is G. In this paper, we obtain the thickness of complete 3-partite graph K_1,n,n, K_2,n,n and complete 4-partite graph K_1,1,n,n.

A note on the 4-girth-thickness of K_{n,n,n}

The $4$-girth-thickness $θ(4,G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of planar subgraphs of girth at least four whose union is $G$. In this paper, we obtain that the 4-girth-thickness of complete tripartite graph $K_{n,n,n}$ is $\big\lceil\frac{n+1}{2}\big\rceil$ except for $θ(4,K_{1,1,1})=2$. And we also show that the $4$-girth-thickness of the complete graph $K_{10}$ is three which disprove the conjecture $θ(4,K_{10})=4$ posed by Rubio-Montiel (Ars Math Contemp 14(2) (2018) 319).

Optimization of broadband omnidirectional antireflection coatings for solar cells

Broadband and omnidirectional antireflection coating is a generally effective way to improve solar cell efficiency, because the destructive interference between the reflected and input waves could maximize transmission light in the absorption layer. Several theoretical calculations have been developed to optimize the anti-reflective coating to maximize the average transmittance. However, the solar irradiances of the clear sky spectral direct beam on a receiver plane at different positions and times are variable greatly. Here we report a new theoretical calculation of anti-reflective coating with incident quantum efficiency ηin as evaluation function for practical application. The two-layer and three-layer anti-reflective coatings are optimized over λ = [300, 1100] nm and θ = [0°, 90°] for cities of Quito, Beijing and Moscow. The ηin of two-layer anti-reflective coating increases by 0.26%, 1.37% and 4.24% for these 3 cities, respectively, compared with that other theoretical calculations due to better match between the local actual solar spectrum and quantum efficiency spectrum. Our numerical simulation and comparison data with other optimization methods suggest that this optimization method combining ant colony algorithm method with SPCTRL2 solar spectral irradiance can effectively push the efficient solar cell toward higher quantum efficiency, thus enabling high utilization efficiency of solar irradiance.

High-responsivity vertical-illumination Si/Ge uni-traveling-carrier photodiodes based on silicon-on-insulator substrate

Si/Ge uni-traveling carrier photodiodes exhibit higher output current when space-charge effects are overcome and thermal effects are suppressed, which is highly beneficial for increasing the dynamic range of various microwave photonic systems and simplifying high-bit-rate digital receivers in different applications. From the point of view of packaging, detectors with vertical-illumination configuration can be easily handled by pick-and-place tools and are a popular choice for making photo-receiver modules. However, vertical-illumination Si/Ge uni-traveling carrier (UTC) devices suffer from inter-constraint between high speed and high responsivity. Here, we report a high responsivity vertical-illumination Si/Ge UTC photodiode based on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. The maximum absorption efficiency of the devices was 2.4 times greater than the silicon substrate owing to constructive interference. The Si/Ge UTC photodiode was successfully fabricated and had a dominant responsivity at 1550 nm of 0.18 A/W, a 50% improvement even with a 25% thinner Ge absorption layer.
