A Tensor Neural Network Method for High-Order Homogenization of Locally Periodic Elliptic Problems

We develop a high-order tensor neural network (TNN) method for locally periodic elliptic multiscale problems of the form $-\nabla\cdot(A(x,x/\varepsilon)\nabla u_\varepsilon)=f$. Because the coefficient depends on both the slow variable $x$ and the fast periodic variable $y=x/\varepsilon$, the high-order cell problems and macroscopic corrector equations are more involved than in the classical case $A=A(y)$, and the correctors depend parametrically on $x$. We derive a computable high-order two-scale expansion and prove an $H^1$ convergence estimate for the partial expansion in boundary-layer-free settings, including periodic domains and ideal boundary-matching configurations. The proof uses the recursive compatibility structure of the corrector hierarchy and a zero-mean oscillation estimate in $H^{-1}$. We then construct a TNN framework for the high-dimensional corrector problems. Its tensor-product structure permits deterministic one-dimensional quadrature for the cell problems, homogenized coefficients, macroscopic source terms, and loss functions, avoiding Monte Carlo integration error. The numerical realization assumes that the coefficient entries and assembled data admit finite or controlled tensor-product representations; this computational assumption is separate from the general matrix-valued coefficient class used in the analysis. Experiments with scalar locally periodic coefficients show accurate high-order correctors. The $H^1$ semi-norm errors are consistent with the proved estimate, while point-normalized $L^2$ errors display the nominal high-order behavior predicted by the formal expansion.

Penalty-Free Natural Deep Ritz Method Based on de Rham Complex for High-Dimensional Dirichlet Boundary Value Problems

Deep neural networks show great promise for high-dimensional PDEs, yet enforcing essential boundary conditions remains challenging, especially as penalty parameters require problem-specific retuning with increasing dimensionality. In this work, we extend the Natural Deep Ritz Method (NatDRM) [H. Yu and S. Zhang, J. Comput. Phys., 537 (2025)] to a unified framework for all dimensions $d \geq 2$ based on the de Rham complex and its penalty-free boundary decomposition: curl-type operators act on scalar potentials in 2D, vector potentials in 3D, and antisymmetric second-order tensor potentials in $d \geq 4$, respectively. This method converts Dirichlet constraints into three coupled natural (Neumann-type) subproblems with corresponding Ritz-type losses, eliminating the need for a boundary penalty parameter $\beta$. We derive dimension-unified discrete losses, lightweight boundary-based gauge-fixing regularizations to resolve curl-kernel non-uniqueness, and a joint training procedure; extensions to variable-coefficient elliptic and semilinear Poisson problems are formulated at the first subproblem level. Numerical experiments on smooth benchmarks up to 6D show that NatDRM, without any penalty tuning, matches or exceeds the accuracy of optimally tuned DRM and PINN in most cases. It converges stably in 6D where penalized DRM fails for most penalty values, and exhibits synchronous decay of interior and boundary errors, resolving the inherent imbalance of penalty-based methods.

A simple low-degree optimal finite element scheme for the elastic transmission eigenvalue problem

The paper presents a finite element scheme for the elastic transmission eigenvalue problem written as a fourth order eigenvalue problem. The scheme uses piecewise cubic polynomials and obtains optimal convergence rate. Compared with other low-degree and nonconforming finite element schemes, the scheme inherits the continuous bilinear form which does not need extra stabilizations and is thus simple to implement.

Lowest-degree piecewise polynomial de Rham complex on general quadrilateral grids

This paper is devoted to the construction of finite elements on grids that consist of general quadrilaterals not limited in parallelograms. Two finite elements defined as Ciarlet's triple are established for the $H^1$ and $H(\rm rot)$ elliptic problems, respectively. An $\mathcal{O}(h)$ order convergence rate in energy norm for both of them and an $\mathcal{O}(h^2)$ order convergence in $L^2$ norm for the $H^1$ scheme are proved under the asymptotic-parallelogram assumption on the grids. Further, the two finite element spaces on general quadrilateral grids, together with the space of piecewise constant functions, formulate a discretized de Rham complex. The finite element spaces consist of piecewise polynomial functions, and, thus, are nonconforming on general quadrilateral grids. Indeed, a rigorous analysis is given in this paper that it is impossible to construct a practically useful finite element defined as Ciarlet's triple that can formulate a finite element space which consists of continuous piecewise polynomial functions on a grid that may include arbitrary quadrilaterals.

Inverse electromagnetic obstacle scattering problems with multi-frequency sparse backscattering far field data

This paper is dedicated to design a direct sampling method of inverse electromagnetic scattering problems, which uses multi-frequency sparse backscattering far field data for reconstructing the boundary of perfectly conducting obstacles. We show that a smallest strip containing the unknown object can be approximately determined by the multi-frequency backscattering far field data at two opposite observation directions. The proof is based on the Kirchhoff approximation and Fourier transform. Such a strip is then reconstructed by an indicator, which is the absolute value of an integral of the product of the data and some properly chosen function over the frequency interval. With the increase of the number of the backscattering data, the location and shape of the underlying object can be reconstructed. Numerical examples are conducted to show the validity and robustness of the proposed sampling method. The numerical examples also show that the concave part of the underlying object can be well reconstructed, and the different connected components of the underlying object can be well separated.

Identification of point like objects with multi-frequency sparse data

The inverse acoustic scattering of point objects using multi-frequency sparse measurements are studied. The objects may be a sum of point sources or point like scatterers. We show that the locations and scattering strengths of the point objects can be uniquely identified by the multi-frequency near or far fields taken at sparse sensors. Based on the uniqueness analysis, some direct methods have also been proposed for reconstructing the locations and determining the scattering strengths. The numerical examples are conducted to show the validity and robustness of the proposed numerical methods.

Inverse acoustic scattering problems with multi-frequency sparse backscattering far field data

The inverse acoustic scattering problems using multi-frequency backscattering far field patterns at isolated directions are studied. The underlying object could be point like scatterers, small scatterers, extended inhomogeneities and obstacles. A fast and robust direct sampling method is proposed for location and shape reconstruction of the underlying objects. To our best knowledge, this is the first numerical method for inverse obstacle/medium scattering problems with the multi-frequency sparse backscattering data. Some approximate uniqueness results have also been showed based on the weak scattering approximation and the Kirchhoff approximation. The theoretical basis of the direct sampling method is initially established based on these two approximations. Numerical examples in two dimensions are presented to validity the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed direct sampling method. In particular, the numerical reconstructions indicate that the direct sampling method also works very well beyond these two approximations.

A high accuracy nonconforming finite element scheme for Helmholtz transmission eigenvalue problem

In this paper, we consider a cubic $H^2$ nonconforming finite element scheme $B_{h0}^3$ which does not correspond to a locally defined finite element with Ciarlet$'$s triple but admit a set of local basis functions. For the first time, we deduce and write out the expression of basis functions explicitly. Distinguished from the most nonconforming finite element methods, $(δΔ_h\cdot,Δ_h\cdot)$ with non-constant coefficient $δ>0$ is coercive on the nonconforming $B_{h0}^3$ space which makes it robust for numerical discretization. For fourth order eigenvalue problem, the $B_{h0}^3$ scheme can provide $\mathcal{O}(h^2)$ approximation for the eigenspace in energy norm and $\mathcal{O}(h^4)$ approximation for the eigenvalues. We test the $B_{h0}^3$ scheme on the vary-coefficient bi-Laplace source and eigenvalue problem, further, transmission eigenvalue problem. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Inverse electromagnetic source scattering problems with multi-frequency sparse phased and phaseless far field data

This paper is concerned with uniqueness, phase retrieval and shape reconstruction methods for solving inverse electromagnetic source scattering problems with multi-frequency sparse phased or phaseless far field data. With the phased data, we show that the smallest strip containing the source support with the observation direction as the normal can be uniquely determined by the multi-frequency far field pattern at a single observation direction. A phased direct sampling method is also proposed to reconstruct the strip. The phaseless far field data is closely related to the outward energy flux, which can be measured more easily in practice. We show that the phaseless far field data is invariant under the translation of the sources, which implies that the location of the sources can not be uniquely recovered by the data. To solve this problem, we consider simultaneously the scattering of magnetic dipoles with one fixed source point and at most three scattering strengths. With this technique, a fast and stable phase retrieval approach is proposed based on a simple geometrical result which provides a stable reconstruction of a point in the plane from three distances to the given points. A novel phaseless direct sampling method is also proposed to reconstruct the strip. The phase retrieval approach can also be combined with the phased direct sampling method to reconstruct the strip. Finally, to obtain a source support, we just need to superpose the indicators with respect to the sparse observation directions. Extended numerical examples in three dimensions are conducted with noisy data, and the results further verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed phase retrieval approach and direct sampling methods.

A lowest order mixed finite element method for the elastic transmission eigenvalue problem

The goal of this paper is to develop numerical methods computing a few smallest elastic interior transmission eigenvalues, which are of practical importance in inverse elastic scattering theory. The problem is challenging since it is nonlinear, nonselfadjoint, and of fourth order. In this paper, we construct a lowest order mixed finite element method which is close to the Ciarlet-Raviart mixed finite element method. This scheme is based on Lagrange finite elements and is one of the less expensive methods in terms of the amount of degrees of freedom. Due to the nonselfadjointness, the discretization of elastic transmission eigenvalue problem leads to a non-classical mixed method which does not fit into the framework of classical theoretical analysis. In stead, we obtain the convergence analysis based on the spectral approximation theory of compact operators. Numerical examples are presented to verify the theory. Both real and complex eigenvalues can be obtained.

Inverse elastic scattering problems with phaseless far field data

This paper is concerned with uniqueness, phase retrieval and shape reconstruction methods for inverse elastic scattering problems with phaseless far field data. Systematically, we study two basic models, i.e., inverse scattering of plane waves by rigid bodies and inverse scattering of sources with compact support. For both models, we show that the location of the objects can not be uniquely recovered by the data. To solve this problem, we consider simultaneously the incident point sources with one fixed source point and at most three scattering strengths. We then establish some uniqueness results for source scattering problem with multi-frequency phaseless far field data. Furthermore, a fast and stable phase retrieval approach is proposed based on a simple geometric result which provides a stable reconstruction of a point in the plane from three distances to given points. Difficulties arise for inverse scattering by rigid bodies due to the additional unknown far field pattern of the point sources. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce an artificial rigid body into the system and show that the underlying rigid bodies can be uniquely determined by the corresponding phaseless far field data at a fixed frequency. Noting that the far field pattern of the scattered field corresponding to point sources is very small if the source point is far away from the scatterers, we propose an appropriate phase retrieval method for obstacle scattering problems, without using the artificial rigid body. Finally, we propose several sampling methods for shape reconstruction with phaseless far field data. Extended numerical examples in two dimensions are conducted with noisy data, and the results further verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed phase retrieval techniques and sampling methods.

Target reconstruction with a reference point scatterer using phaseless far field patterns

An important property of the phaseless far field patterns with incident plane waves is the translation invariance. Thus it is impossible to reconstruct the location of the underlying scatterers. By adding a reference point scatterer into the model, we design a novel direct sampling method using the phaseless data directly. The reference point technique not only overcomes the translation invariance, but also brings a practical phase retrieval algorithm. Based on this, we propose a hybrid method combining the novel phase retrieval algorithm and the classical direct sampling methods. Numerical examples in two dimensions are presented to demonstrate their effectiveness and robustness.

Phaseless inverse source scattering problem: phase retrieval, uniqueness and direct sampling methods

Similar to the obstacle or medium scattering problems, an important property of the phaseless far field patterns for source scattering problems is the translation invariance. Thus it is impossible to reconstruct the location of the underlying sources. Furthermore, the phaseless far field pattern is also invariant if the source is multiplied by any complex number with modulus one. Therefore, the source can not be uniquely determined, even the multifrequency phaseless far field patterns are considered. By adding a reference point source into the model, we propose a simple and stable phase retrieval method and establish several uniqueness results with phaseless far field data. We proceed to introduce a novel direct sampling method for shape and location reconstruction of the source by using broadband sparse phaseless data directly. We also propose a combination method with the novel phase retrieval algorithm and the classical direct sampling methods with phased data. Numerical examples in two dimensions are also presented to demonstrate their feasibility and effectiveness.

Computation of Transmission Eigenvalues for Elastic Waves

The goal of this paper is to develop numerical methods computing a few smallest elasticity transmission eigenvalues, which are of practical importance in inverse scattering theory. The problem is challenging since it is nonlinear, non-self-adjoint, and of fourth order. We construct a nonlinear function whose values are generalized eigenvalues of a series of self-adjoint fourth order problems. The roots of the function are the transmission eigenvalues. Using an $H^2$-conforming finite element for the self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problems, we employ a secant method to compute the roots of the nonlinear function. The convergence of the proposed method is proved. In addition, a mixed finite element method is developed for the purpose of verification. Numerical examples are presented to verify the theory and demonstrate the effectiveness of the two methods.

Direct sampling methods for inverse elastic scattering problems

We consider the inverse elastic scattering of incident plane compressional and shear waves from the knowledge of the far field patterns. Specifically, three direct sampling methods for location and shape reconstruction are proposed using the different component of the far field patterns. Only inner products are involved in the computation, thus the novel sampling methods are very simple and fast to be implemented. With the help of the factorization of the far field operator, we give a lower bound of the proposed indicator functionals for sampling points inside the scatterers. While for the sampling points outside the scatterers, we show that the indicator functionals decay like the Bessel functions as the sampling point goes away from the boundary of the scatterers. We also show that the proposed indicator functionals continuously dependent on the far field patterns, which further implies that the novel sampling methods are extremely stable with respect to data error. For the case when the observation directions are restricted into the limited aperture, we firstly introduce some data retrieval techniques to obtain those data that can not be measured directly and then use the proposed direct sampling methods for location and shape reconstructions. Finally, some numerical simulations in two dimensions are conducted with noisy data, and the results further verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed sampling methods, even for multiple multiscale cases and limited-aperture problems.

Modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck model with accurate Coulomb correlation in variable media

We derive a set of modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck (mPNP) equations for ion transport from the variation of the free energy functional which includes the many-body Coulomb correlation in media of variable dielectric coefficient. The correlation effects are considered through the Debye charging process in which the self energy of an ion is governed by the generalized Debye-Hückel equation. We develop the asymptotic expansions of the self energy taking the ion radius as the small parameter such that the multiscale model can be solved efficiently by numerical methods. It is shown that the variations of the energy functional give the self-energy-modified PNP equations which satisfy a proper weak formulation. We present numerical results from different asymptotic expansions with a semi-implicit conservative numerical method and investigate the effect of the Coulomb correlation.

A Multi-level Mixed Element Method for the Eigenvalue Problem of Biharmonic Equation

In this paper, we discuss approximating the eigenvalue problem of biharmonic equation. We first present an equivalent mixed formulation which admits amiable nested discretization. Then, we construct multi-level finite element schemes by implementing the algorithm as in [33] to the nested discretizations on series of nested grids. The multi-level mixed scheme for biharmonic eigenvalue problem possesses optimal convergence rate and optimal computational cost. Both theoretical analysis and numerical verifications are presented.

On isotropic cloaking and interior transmission eigenvalue problems

This paper is concerned with the invisibility cloaking in acoustic wave scattering from a new perspective. We are especially interested in achieving the invisibility cloaking by completely regular and isotropic mediums. It is shown that an interior transmission eigenvalue problem arises in our study, which is the one considered theoretically in \cite{CCH}. Based on such an observation, we propose a cloaking scheme that takes a three-layer structure including a cloaked region, a lossy layer and a cloaking shell. The target medium in the cloaked region can be arbitrary but regular, whereas the mediums in the lossy layer and the cloaking shell are both regular and isotropic. We establish that if a certain non-transparency condition is satisfied, then there exists an infinite set of incident waves such that the cloaking device is nearly-invisible under the corresponding wave interrogation. The set of waves is generated from the Herglotz-approximation of the associated interior transmission eigenfunctions. We provide both theoretical and numerical justifications.
