Maximal stretch and Lipschitz maps on Riemannian manifolds of negative curvature

In his seminal work on Teichm\"uller spaces (\cite{Th98}), Thurston introduced the maximal stretch for a pair of hyperbolic metrics on a closed surface of genus $\geq 2$ and showed that the logarithm of this quantity induces an asymmetric metric in the Teichm\"uller space. He also showed that the subset of the surface on which the maximal stretch is attained is a geodesic lamination. In this paper, we define the maximal stretch analogously for closed manifolds equipped with Riemannian metrics of variable negative curvature and investigate the structure of the related Mather set on the unit tangent bundle. In contrast to the Teichm\"uller space, the Mather set may not be lifts of geodesic laminations in this broader setting. However, in our paper, we will discuss similar features shared by the Mather set with geodesic laminations. We also connect the study of the Mather set with the theory of best Lipschitz maps.

The covariance metric in the Blaschke locus

We prove that the Blaschke locus has the structure of a finite dimensional smooth manifold away from the Teichm{ü}ller space and study its Riemannian manifold structure with respect to the covariance metric introduced by Guillarmou, Knieper and Lefeuvre in \cite{GeodesicStretch}. We also identify some families of geodesics in the Blaschke locus arising from Hitchin representations for orbifolds and show that they have infinite length with respect to the covariance metric.

Thurston's asymmetric metrics for Anosov representations

We provide a good dynamical framework allowing to generalize Thurston's asymmetric metric and the associated Finsler norm from Teichmüller space to large classes of Anosov representations. In many cases, including the space of Hitchin representations, this gives a (possibly asymmetric) Finsler distance. In some cases we explicitly compute the associated Finsler norm.

Correlation of the renormalized Hilbert length for convex projective surfaces

In this paper we focus on dynamical properties of (real) convex projective surfaces. Our main theorem provides an asymptotic formula for the number of free homotopy classes with roughly the same renormalized Hilbert length for two distinct convex real projective structures. The correlation number in this asymptotic formula is characterized in terms of their Manhattan curve. We show that the correlation number is not uniformly bounded away from zero on the space of pairs of hyperbolic surfaces, answering a question of Schwartz and Sharp. In contrast, we provide examples of diverging sequences, defined via cubic rays, along which the correlation number stays larger than a uniform strictly positive constant. In the last section, we extend the correlation theorem to Hitchin representations.

Geodesic Coordinates for the Pressure Metric at the Fuchsian Locus

We prove that the Hitchin parametrization provides geodesic coordinates at the Fuchsian locus for the pressure metric in the Hitchin component $\mathcal{H}_{3}(S)$ of surface group representations into $PSL(3,\mathbb{R})$. The proof consists of the following elements: we compute first derivatives of the pressure metric using the thermodynamic formalism. We invoke a gauge-theoretic formula to compute first and second variations of reparametrization functions by studying flat connections from Hitchin's equations and their parallel transports. We then extend these expressions of integrals over closed geodesics to integrals over the two-dimensional surface. Symmetries of the Liouville measure then provide cancellations, which show that the first derivatives of the pressure metric tensors vanish at the Fuchsian locus.
