MonoHuman: Animatable Human Neural Field from Monocular Video

Animating virtual avatars with free-view control is crucial for various applications like virtual reality and digital entertainment. Previous studies have attempted to utilize the representation power of the neural radiance field (NeRF) to reconstruct the human body from monocular videos. Recent works propose to graft a deformation network into the NeRF to further model the dynamics of the human neural field for animating vivid human motions. However, such pipelines either rely on pose-dependent representations or fall short of motion coherency due to frame-independent optimization, making it difficult to generalize to unseen pose sequences realistically. In this paper, we propose a novel framework MonoHuman, which robustly renders view-consistent and high-fidelity avatars under arbitrary novel poses. Our key insight is to model the deformation field with bi-directional constraints and explicitly leverage the off-the-peg keyframe information to reason the feature correlations for coherent results. Specifically, we first propose a Shared Bidirectional Deformation module, which creates a pose-independent generalizable deformation field by disentangling backward and forward deformation correspondences into shared skeletal motion weight and separate non-rigid motions. Then, we devise a Forward Correspondence Search module, which queries the correspondence feature of keyframes to guide the rendering network. The rendered results are thus multi-view consistent with high fidelity, even under challenging novel pose settings. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposed MonoHuman over state-of-the-art methods.

Taming Diffusion Models for Audio-Driven Co-Speech Gesture Generation

Animating virtual avatars to make co-speech gestures facilitates various applications in human-machine interaction. The existing methods mainly rely on generative adversarial networks (GANs), which typically suffer from notorious mode collapse and unstable training, thus making it difficult to learn accurate audio-gesture joint distributions. In this work, we propose a novel diffusion-based framework, named Diffusion Co-Speech Gesture (DiffGesture), to effectively capture the cross-modal audio-to-gesture associations and preserve temporal coherence for high-fidelity audio-driven co-speech gesture generation. Specifically, we first establish the diffusion-conditional generation process on clips of skeleton sequences and audio to enable the whole framework. Then, a novel Diffusion Audio-Gesture Transformer is devised to better attend to the information from multiple modalities and model the long-term temporal dependency. Moreover, to eliminate temporal inconsistency, we propose an effective Diffusion Gesture Stabilizer with an annealed noise sampling strategy. Benefiting from the architectural advantages of diffusion models, we further incorporate implicit classifier-free guidance to trade off between diversity and gesture quality. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DiffGesture achieves state-of-theart performance, which renders coherent gestures with better mode coverage and stronger audio correlations. Explicit and Implicit Knowledge Distillation via Unlabeled Data

Data-free knowledge distillation is a challenging model lightweight task for scenarios in which the original dataset is not available. Previous methods require a lot of extra computational costs to update one or more generators and their naive imitate-learning lead to lower distillation efficiency. Based on these observations, we first propose an efficient unlabeled sample selection method to replace high computational generators and focus on improving the training efficiency of the selected samples. Then, a class-dropping mechanism is designed to suppress the label noise caused by the data domain shifts. Finally, we propose a distillation method that incorporates explicit features and implicit structured relations to improve the effect of distillation. Experimental results show that our method can quickly converge and obtain higher accuracy than other state-of-the-art methods.

Audio-Driven Co-Speech Gesture Video Generation

Co-speech gesture is crucial for human-machine interaction and digital entertainment. While previous works mostly map speech audio to human skeletons (e.g., 2D keypoints), directly generating speakers' gestures in the image domain remains unsolved. In this work, we formally define and study this challenging problem of audio-driven co-speech gesture video generation, i.e., using a unified framework to generate speaker image sequence driven by speech audio. Our key insight is that the co-speech gestures can be decomposed into common motion patterns and subtle rhythmic dynamics. To this end, we propose a novel framework, Audio-driveN Gesture vIdeo gEneration (ANGIE), to effectively capture the reusable co-speech gesture patterns as well as fine-grained rhythmic movements. To achieve high-fidelity image sequence generation, we leverage an unsupervised motion representation instead of a structural human body prior (e.g., 2D skeletons). Specifically, 1) we propose a vector quantized motion extractor (VQ-Motion Extractor) to summarize common co-speech gesture patterns from implicit motion representation to codebooks. 2) Moreover, a co-speech gesture GPT with motion refinement (Co-Speech GPT) is devised to complement the subtle prosodic motion details. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework renders realistic and vivid co-speech gesture video. Demo video and more resources can be found in: https://alvinliu0.github.io/projects/ANGIE

Object-Compositional Neural Implicit Surfaces

The neural implicit representation has shown its effectiveness in novel view synthesis and high-quality 3D reconstruction from multi-view images. However, most approaches focus on holistic scene representation yet ignore individual objects inside it, thus limiting potential downstream applications. In order to learn object-compositional representation, a few works incorporate the 2D semantic map as a cue in training to grasp the difference between objects. But they neglect the strong connections between object geometry and instance semantic information, which leads to inaccurate modeling of individual instance. This paper proposes a novel framework, ObjectSDF, to build an object-compositional neural implicit representation with high fidelity in 3D reconstruction and object representation. Observing the ambiguity of conventional volume rendering pipelines, we model the scene by combining the Signed Distance Functions (SDF) of individual object to exert explicit surface constraint. The key in distinguishing different instances is to revisit the strong association between an individual object's SDF and semantic label. Particularly, we convert the semantic information to a function of object SDF and develop a unified and compact representation for scene and objects. Experimental results show the superiority of ObjectSDF framework in representing both the holistic object-compositional scene and the individual instances. Static and Dynamic Concepts for Self-supervised Video Representation Learning

In this paper, we propose a novel learning scheme for self-supervised video representation learning. Motivated by how humans understand videos, we propose to first learn general visual concepts then attend to discriminative local areas for video understanding. Specifically, we utilize static frame and frame difference to help decouple static and dynamic concepts, and respectively align the concept distributions in latent space. We add diversity and fidelity regularizations to guarantee that we learn a compact set of meaningful concepts. Then we employ a cross-attention mechanism to aggregate detailed local features of different concepts, and filter out redundant concepts with low activations to perform local concept contrast. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method distills meaningful static and dynamic concepts to guide video understanding, and obtains state-of-the-art results on UCF-101, HMDB-51, and Diving-48.

Learning Hierarchical Cross-Modal Association for Co-Speech Gesture Generation

Generating speech-consistent body and gesture movements is a long-standing problem in virtual avatar creation. Previous studies often synthesize pose movement in a holistic manner, where poses of all joints are generated simultaneously. Such a straightforward pipeline fails to generate fine-grained co-speech gestures. One observation is that the hierarchical semantics in speech and the hierarchical structures of human gestures can be naturally described into multiple granularities and associated together. To fully utilize the rich connections between speech audio and human gestures, we propose a novel framework named Hierarchical Audio-to-Gesture (HA2G) for co-speech gesture generation. In HA2G, a Hierarchical Audio Learner extracts audio representations across semantic granularities. A Hierarchical Pose Inferer subsequently renders the entire human pose gradually in a hierarchical manner. To enhance the quality of synthesized gestures, we develop a contrastive learning strategy based on audio-text alignment for better audio representations. Extensive experiments and human evaluation demonstrate that the proposed method renders realistic co-speech gestures and outperforms previous methods in a clear margin. Resource allocation for reconfigurable intelligent surface aided broadcast channels

A two-user downlink network aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface is considered. The weighted sum signal to interference plus noise ratio maximization and the sum rate maximization models are presented, where the precoding vectors and the RIS matrix are jointly optimized. Since the optimization problem is non-convex and difficult, new approximation models are proposed. The upper bounds of the corresponding objective functions are derived and maximized. Two new algorithms based on the alternating direction method of multiplier are proposed. It is proved that the proposed algorithms converge to the KKT points of the approximation models as long as the iteration points converge. Simulation results show the good performances of the proposed models compared to state of the art algorithms.

Visual Sound Localization in the Wild by Cross-Modal Interference Erasing

The task of audio-visual sound source localization has been well studied under constrained scenes, where the audio recordings are clean. However, in real-world scenarios, audios are usually contaminated by off-screen sound and background noise. They will interfere with the procedure of identifying desired sources and building visual-sound connections, making previous studies non-applicable. In this work, we propose the Interference Eraser (IEr) framework, which tackles the problem of audio-visual sound source localization in the wild. The key idea is to eliminate the interference by redefining and carving discriminative audio representations. Specifically, we observe that the previous practice of learning only a single audio representation is insufficient due to the additive nature of audio signals. We thus extend the audio representation with our Audio-Instance-Identifier module, which clearly distinguishes sounding instances when audio signals of different volumes are unevenly mixed. Then we erase the influence of the audible but off-screen sounds and the silent but visible objects by a Cross-modal Referrer module with cross-modality distillation. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that our proposed framework achieves superior results on sound localization tasks, especially under real-world scenarios. Semantic-Aware Implicit Neural Audio-Driven Video Portrait Generation

Animating high-fidelity video portrait with speech audio is crucial for virtual reality and digital entertainment. While most previous studies rely on accurate explicit structural information, recent works explore the implicit scene representation of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) for realistic generation. In order to capture the inconsistent motions as well as the semantic difference between human head and torso, some work models them via two individual sets of NeRF, leading to unnatural results. In this work, we propose Semantic-aware Speaking Portrait NeRF (SSP-NeRF), which creates delicate audio-driven portraits using one unified set of NeRF. The proposed model can handle the detailed local facial semantics and the global head-torso relationship through two semantic-aware modules. Specifically, we first propose a Semantic-Aware Dynamic Ray Sampling module with an additional parsing branch that facilitates audio-driven volume rendering. Moreover, to enable portrait rendering in one unified neural radiance field, a Torso Deformation module is designed to stabilize the large-scale non-rigid torso motions. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our proposed approach renders more realistic video portraits compared to previous methods. Project page: https://alvinliu0.github.io/projects/SSP-NeRF

A Two-Stage Stochastic Programming Model for Blood Supply Chain Management, Considering Facility Disruption and Service Level

In this paper, a blood supply chain network, where the occurrence of disruption might interrupt the flow of Red Blood Cells, is dealt with. In principle, the probability of disruption is not the only property confiding the network, but unprecedented fluctuations in supplies and demands also contribute to the network shortages and outdated blood units. Although the consideration of parameter uncertainties is of paramount importance in the real-world circumstances for a decision-maker, she or he would be willing to monitor the network in a properly broader perspective. Therefore, one of the eminent key performance indicators known as service level turned our attention. To tackle uncertainties in the mentioned network - comprising of the four conventional levels containing donors, blood collection facilities, blood banks, and hospitals - we present a two-stage stochastic programming model. Consequently, a toy-example is randomly generated to validate the proposed model. Furthermore, numerical analysis led us to a comprehensive service level analysis. Finally, potential pathways for future research are suggested.

Enhancing Self-supervised Video Representation Learning via Multi-level Feature Optimization

The crux of self-supervised video representation learning is to build general features from unlabeled videos. However, most recent works have mainly focused on high-level semantics and neglected lower-level representations and their temporal relationship which are crucial for general video understanding. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a multi-level feature optimization framework to improve the generalization and temporal modeling ability of learned video representations. Concretely, high-level features obtained from naive and prototypical contrastive learning are utilized to build distribution graphs, guiding the process of low-level and mid-level feature learning. We also devise a simple temporal modeling module from multi-level features to enhance motion pattern learning. Experiments demonstrate that multi-level feature optimization with the graph constraint and temporal modeling can greatly improve the representation ability in video understanding. A Simulation-Optimization Technique for Service Level Analysis in Conjunction with Reorder Point Estimation and Lead-Time consideration: A Case Study in Sea Port

This study offers a step-by-step practical procedure from the analysis of the current status of the spare parts inventory system to advanced service-level analysis by virtue of simulation-optimization technique for a real-world case study associated with a seaport. The remarkable variety and immense diversity on one hand, and extreme complexities not only in consumption patterns but in the supply of spare parts in an international port with technically advance port operator machinery, on the other hand, have convinced the managers to deal with this issue in a structural framework. The huge available data require cleaning and classification to properly process them and derive reorder point (ROP) estimation, reorder quantity (ROQ) estimation, and associated service level analysis. Finally, from 247000 items used in 9 years long, 1416 inventory items are elected as a result of ABC analysis integrating with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which led to the main items that need to be kept under strict inventory control. The ROPs and the pertinent quantities are simulated by Arena software for all the main items, each of which took approximately 30 minutes run-time on a personal computer to determine near-optimal estimations.

Optimizing the Total Production and Maintenance Cost of an Integrated Multi-Product Process and Maintenance Planning (IPPMP) Model

Today, a competitive manufacturing environment imposes further production cost reduction on modern companies. Seeking proper recommendations in production and maintenance planning are the two essential cornerstones of effective production organizations. In the current research, we have considered the problem of integrated multi-product process and maintenance planning on a capacitated machine that is susceptible to random breakdown. Maintenance processes comprise general perfect repair (non-cyclical) as preventive maintenance (PM) in the early stages and minimal repair as corrective maintenance for the occurrence of machine breakdown. Furthermore, a rational presumption is reflected in the problem statement in which the time and cost of PM are pertinent to the interval between the prior perfect repair and current PM. The purpose served by this paper is to minimize the cost of production accompanying PM, and the expected corrective repair, consequently, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model has been constructed to pave the way. The model investigated under two circumstances of the machine age effect and its absence. The outcome depicted that the presence of the machine age effect led to an accurate and lessen total cost calculation.

Motion Capture from Internet Videos

Recent advances in image-based human pose estimation make it possible to capture 3D human motion from a single RGB video. However, the inherent depth ambiguity and self-occlusion in a single view prohibit the recovery of as high-quality motion as multi-view reconstruction. While multi-view videos are not common, the videos of a celebrity performing a specific action are usually abundant on the Internet. Even if these videos were recorded at different time instances, they would encode the same motion characteristics of the person. Therefore, we propose to capture human motion by jointly analyzing these Internet videos instead of using single videos separately. However, this new task poses many new challenges that cannot be addressed by existing methods, as the videos are unsynchronized, the camera viewpoints are unknown, the background scenes are different, and the human motions are not exactly the same among videos. To address these challenges, we propose a novel optimization-based framework and experimentally demonstrate its ability to recover much more precise and detailed motion from multiple videos, compared against monocular motion capture methods.

Optimal Power Flow with Disjoint Prohibited Zones: New Formulation and Solutions

The constraints induced by prohibited zones (PZs) were traditionally formulated as multiple disjoint regions. It was difficult to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problems subject to the disjoint constraints. This paper proposes a new formulation for the OPF problem with PZs. The proposed formulation significantly expedites the algorithm implementation. The effectiveness of the new approach is verified by different methods including traditional optimization methods, PSO and particle swarm optimization with adaptive parameter control which is conducted on the IEEE 30-bus test system.
