On the coefficients of interior and exterior polynomials of polymatroids

The Tutte polynomial is an important invariant of graphs and matroids. Chen and Guo \emph{[Adv. in Appl. Math. 166 (2025) 102868.]} proved that for a $(k+1)$-edge connected graph $G$ and for any $i$ with $0\leq i <\frac{3(k+1)}{2}$, $$[y^{g-i}]T_{G}(1,y)=\binom{|V(G)|+i-2}{i}-\sum_{j=0}^{i}\binom{|V(G)|+i-2-j}{i-j}|\mathcal{SC}_{j}(G)|,$$ where $g=|E(G)|-|V(G)|+1$, $\mathcal{SC}_{j}(G)$ is the set of all minimal edge cuts with $j$ edges, $T_{G}(x,y)$ is the Tutte polynomial of the graph $G$, and $[y^{g-i}]T_{G}(1,y)$ denotes the coefficient of $y^{g-i}$ in the polynomial $T_{G}(1,y)$. Recently, Ma, Guan and Jin \emph{[arXiv.2503.06095, 2025.]} generalized this result from graphs to matroids and obtained the dual result on coefficients of $T_M(x,1)$ of matroids $M$ at the same time. In 2013, as a generalization of $T_{G}(x,1)$ and $T_{G}(1,y)$ of graphs $G$ to hypergraphs, Kálmán \emph{[Adv. Math. 244 (2013) 823-873.]} introduced interior and exterior polynomials for connected hypergraphs. Chen and Guo posed a problem that can one generalize these results of graphs to interior and exterior polynomials of hypergraphs? In this paper, we solve it in the affirmative by obtaining results for more general polymatroids, which include the case of hypergraphs and also generalize the results of matroids due to Ma, Guan and Jin. As an application, the sequence consisting of these coefficients on polymatroids is proven to be unimodal, while the unimodality of the whole coefficients of matroids was obtained in 2018 by Adiprasito, Huh and Katz using Hodge theory.

The burning number conjecture holds for trees of order $n$ with at most $\left\lfloor \sqrt{n-1}\right\rfloor$ degree-2 vertices

Inspired by the spread of information in social networks and graph-theoretic processes such as Firefighting and graph cleaning, Bonato, Janssen and Roshanbin introduced in 2016 the burning number $b(G)$ of any finite graph $G$. They conjectured that $b(G)\le \lceil n^\frac{1}{2}\rceil$ holds for all connected graphs $G$ of order $n$, and observed that it suffices to prove the conjecture for all trees. In 2024, Murakami confirmed the conjecture for trees without degree-2 vertices. In this paper, we prove that for all trees $T$ of order $n$ with $n_2$ degree-2 vertices, $$b(T)\le \left\lceil \left(n+n_2-\left\lceil\sqrt{n+n_2+0.25}-1.5\right\rceil\right)^{\frac{1}{2}}\right\rceil.$$ Hence, the conjecture holds for all trees of order $n$ with at most $\left\lfloor \sqrt{n-1}\right\rfloor$ degree-2 vertices.

A sharp upper bound for the number of connected sets in any grid graph

A connected set in a graph is a subset of vertices whose induced subgraph is connected. Although counting the number of connected sets in a graph is generally a \#P-complete problem, it remains an active area of research. In 2020, Vince posed the problem of finding a formula for the number of connected sets in the $(n\times n)$-grid graph. In this paper, we establish a sharp upper bound for the number of connected sets in any grid graph by using multistep recurrence formulas, which further derives enumeration formulas for the numbers of connected sets in $(3\times n)$- and $(4\times n)$-grid graphs, thus solving a special case of the general problem posed by Vince. In the process, we also determine the number of connected sets of $K_{m}\times P_{n}$ by employing the transfer matrix method, where $K_{m}\times P_{n}$ is the Cartesian product of the complete graph of order $m$ and the path of order $n$.

On the maximum partial-dual genus of a planar graph

Let $G$ be an embedded graph and $A$ an edge subset of $G$. The partial dual of $G$ with respect to $A$, denoted by $G^A$, can be viewed as the geometric dual $G^*$ of $G$ over $A$. If $A=E(G)$, then $G^A=G^*$. Denote by $γ(G^A)$ the genus of the embedded graph $G^A$. The maximum partial-dual genus of $G$ is defined as $$^\partialγ_{M}(G):=\max_{A \subseteq E(G)}γ(G^A).$$ For any planar graph $G$, it had been proved that $^\partialγ_{M}(G)$ does not rely on the embeddings of $G$. In this paper, we further prove that if $G$ is a connected planar graph of order $n\geq 2$, then $^{\partial}γ_{M}(G)\geq \frac{n-n_2-2n_1}{2}+1$, where $n_i$ is the number of vertices of degree $i$ in $G$. As a consequence, if $G$ is a connected planar graph of order $n$ with minimum degree at least 3, then $^{\partial}γ_{M}(G) \geq \frac{n}{2}+1$. Denote by $G^c$ the complement of a graph $G$ and by $χ(G^c)$ the chromatic number of $G^c$. Moreover, we prove that if $G \ncong K_4$ is a $λ$-edge-connected planar graph of order $n$, then $^{\partial}γ_{M}(G) \geq f(n,λ,χ(G^c))$, where $f(n,λ,χ(G^c))$ is a function of $n$, $λ$ and $χ(G^c)$. The first lower bound is tight for any $n$, and the second lower bound is tight for some 3-edge-connected graphs.

Isolation partitions in graphs

Let $G$ be a graph and $k \geq 3$ an integer. A subset $D \subseteq V(G)$ is a $k$-clique (resp., cycle) isolating set of $G$ if $G-N[D]$ contains no $k$-clique (resp., cycle). In this paper, we prove that every connected graph with maximum degree at most $k$, except $k$-clique, can be partitioned into $k+1$ disjoint $k$-clique isolating sets, and that every connected claw-free subcubic graph, except 3-cycle, can be partitioned into four disjoint cycle isolating sets. As a consequence of the first result, every $k$-regular graph can be partitioned into $k+1$ disjoint $k$-clique isolating sets.

The number of quasi-trees of bouquets with exactly one non-orientable loop

Recently, Merino extended the classical relation between the $2n$-th Fibonacci number and the number of spanning trees of the $n$-fan graph to ribbon graphs, and established a relation between the $n$-associated Mersenne number and the number of quasi-trees of the $n$-wheel ribbon graph. Moreover, Merino posed a problem of finding the Lucas numbers as the number of spanning quasi-trees of a family of ribbon graphs. In this paper, we solve the problem and give the Matrix-Quasi-tree Theorem for a bouquet with exactly one non-orientable loop. Furthermore, this theorem is used to verify that the number of quasi-trees of some classes of bouquets is closely related to the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We also give alternative proofs of the number of quasi-trees of these bouquets by using the deletion-contraction relations of ribbon graphs.

Partial-dual polynomial as a framed weight system

Recently, Chmutov proved that the partial-dual polynomial considered as a function on chord diagrams satisfies the four-term relations. In this paper, we show that this function on framed chord diagrams also satisfies the four-term relations, i.e., is a framed weight system.

Twist polynomial as a weight system for set systems

Recently, Chmutov proved that the partial-dual polynomial considered as a function on chord diagrams satisfies the four-term relation. Deng et al. then proved that this function on framed chord diagrams also satisfies the four-term relation, i.e., is a framed weight system. In this paper, we extend their results to the twist polynomial of a set system by proving that the twist polynomial on set systems satisfies the four-term relation.

Extreme coefficients of multiplicity Tutte polynomials

The multiplicity Tutte polynomial, which includes the arithmetic Tutte polynomial, is a generalization of the classical Tutte polynomial of matroids. In this paper, we obtain an expression of the general coefficient and the expressions of six extreme coefficients of multiplicity Tutte polynomials. In particular, an expression of the general coefficient and the expressions of corresponding extreme coefficients of classical Tutte polynomial of matroids are deduced.

On the edge reconstruction of the characteristic and permanental polynomials of a simple graph

As a variant of the Ulam's vertex reconstruction conjecture and the Harary's edge reconstruction conjecture, Cvetković and Schwenk posed independently the following problem: Can the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph $G$ with vertex set $V$ be reconstructed from the characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-v|v\in V\}$ for $|V|\geq 3$? This problem is still open. A natural problem is: Can the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph $G$ with edge set $E$ be reconstructed from the characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-e|e\in E\}$? In this paper, we prove that if $|V|\neq |E|$, then the characteristic polynomial of $G$ can be reconstructed from the characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-uv, G-u-v|uv\in E\}$, and the similar result holds for the permanental polynomial of $G$. We also prove that the Laplacian (resp. signless Laplacian) characteristic polynomial of $G$ can be reconstructed from the Laplacian (resp. signless Laplacian) characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-e|e\in E\}$ (resp. if $|V|\neq |E|$).

Convolution formulas for multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomials

The multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomial of arithmetic matroids is a generalization of the multivariate Tutte polynomial of matroids. In this note, we give the convolution formulas for the multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomial of the product of two arithmetic matroids. In particular, the convolution formulas for the multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomial of an arithmetic matroid are obtained. Applying our results, several known convolution formulas including [5, Theorem 10.9 and Corollary 10.10] and [1, Theorems 1 and 4] are proved by a purely combinatorial proof. The proofs presented here are significantly shorter than the previous ones. In addition, we obtain a convolution formula for the characteristic polynomial of an arithmetic matroid.

On the maximum local mean order of sub-k-trees of a k-tree

For a k-tree T, a generalization of a tree, the local mean order of sub-k-trees of T is the average order of sub-k-trees of T containing a given k-clique. The problem whether the largest local mean order of a tree (i.e., a 1-tree) at a vertex always takes on at a leaf was asked by Jamison in 1984 and was answered by Wagner and Wang in 2016. In 2018, Stephens and Oellermann asked a similar problem: for any k-tree T, does the maximum local mean order of sub-k-trees containing a given k-clique occur at a k-clique that is not a major k-clique of T? In this paper, we give it an affirmative answer.

New results on the 1-isolation number of graphs without short cycles

Let $G$ be a graph. A subset $D \subseteq V(G)$ is called a 1-isolating set of $G$ if $Δ(G-N[D]) \leq 1$, that is, $G-N[D]$ consists of isolated edges and isolated vertices only. The $1$-isolation number of $G$, denoted by $ι_1(G)$, is the cardinality of a smallest $1$-isolating set of $G$. In this paper, we prove that if $G \notin \{P_3,C_3,C_7,C_{11}\}$ is a connected graph of order $n$ without $6$-cycles, or without induced 5- and 6-cycles, then $ι_1(G) \leq \frac{n}{4}$. Both bounds are sharp.

Counting spanning trees of (1, N)-periodic graphs

Let $N\geq 2$ be an integer, a (1, $N$)-periodic graph $G$ is a periodic graph whose vertices can be partitioned into two sets $V_1=\{v\midσ(v)=v\}$ and $V_2=\{v\midσ^i(v)\neq v\ \mbox{for any}\ 1<i<N\}$, where $σ$ is an automorphism with order $N$ of $G$. The subgraph of $G$ induced by $V_1$ is called a fixed subgraph. Yan and Zhang [Enumeration of spanning trees of graphs with rotational symmetry, J. Comb. Theory Ser. A, 118(2011): 1270-1290] studied the enumeration of spanning trees of a special type of (1, $N$)-periodic graphs with $V_1=\emptyset$ for any non-trivial automorphism with order $N$. In this paper, we obtain a concise formula for the number of spanning trees of (1, $N$)-periodic graphs. Our result can reduce to Yan and Zhang's when $V_1$ is empty. As applications, we give a new closed formula for the spanning tree generating function of cobweb lattices, and obtain formulae for the number of spanning trees of circulant graphs $C_n(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k)$ and $K_2\bigvee C_n(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k)$.

On the edge reconstruction of six digraph polynomials

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a digraph having no loops and no multiple arcs, with vertex set $V=\{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_n\}$ and arc set $E=\{e_1,e_2,\ldots,e_m\}$. Denote the adjacency matrix and the vertex in-degree diagonal matrix of $G$ by $A=(a_{ij})_{n\times n}$ and $D=diag(d^+(v_1),d^+(v_2),\cdots,d^+(v_n))$, where $a_{ij}=1$ if $(v_i,v_j)\in E(G)$ and $a_{ij}=0$ otherwise, and $d^+(v_i)$ is the number of arcs with head $v_i$. Set $f_1(G;x)=\det(xI-A), f_2(G;x)=\det(xI-D+A),f_3(G;x)=\det(xI-D-A),f_4(G;x)={\rm per}(xI-A), f_5(G;x)={\rm per}(xI-D+A),f_6(G;x)={\rm per}(xI-D-A)$, where $\det(X)$ and ${\rm per}(X)$ denote the determinant and the permanent of a square matrix $X$, respectively. In this paper, we consider a variant of the Ulam's vertex reconstruction conjecture and the Harary's edge reconstruction conjecture, and prove that, for any $1\leq i\leq 6$, \begin{equation*} (m-n)f_i(G;x)+xf_i'(G;x)=\sum\limits_{e\in E}f_i(G-e;x), \end{equation*} which implies that if $m\neq n$, then $f_i(G;x)$ can be reconstructed from $\{f_i(G-e;x)|e\in E\}$.

Extremal trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs with respect to $p$-Sombor spectral radii

For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and $v_{i}\in V$, denote by $d_{v_{i}}$ (or $d_{i}$ for short) the degree of vertex $v_{i}$. The $p$-Sombor matrix $\textbf{S}_{\textbf{p}}(G)$ ($p\neq0$) of a graph $G$ is a square matrix, where the $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\displaystyle (d_{i}^{p}+d_{j}^{p})^{\frac{1}{p}}$ if the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ are adjacent, and 0 otherwise. The $p$-Sombor spectral radius of $G$, denoted by $\displaystyle ρ(\textbf{S}_{\textbf{p}}(G))$, is the largest eigenvalue of the $p$-Sombor matrix $\textbf{S}_{\textbf{p}}(G)$. In this paper, we consider the extremal trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs with respect to the $p$-Sombor spectral radii. We characterize completely the extremal graphs with the first three maximum Sombor spectral radii, which answers partially a problem posed by Liu et al. in [MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 87 (2022) 59-87].

Two spectral extremal results for graphs with given order and rank

The spectral radius and rank of a graph are defined to be the spectral radius and rank of its adjacency matrix, respectively. It is an important problem in spectral extremal graph theory to determine the extremal graph that has the maximum or minimum spectral radius over certain families of graphs. Monsalve and Rada [Extremal spectral radius of graphs with rank 4, Linear Algebra Appl. 609 (2021) 1-11] obtained the extremal graphs with maximum and minimum spectral radii among all graphs with order n and rank 4. In this paper, we first determine the extremal graph which attains the maximum spectral radius among all graphs with any given order n and rank r, and further determine the extremal graph which attains the minimum spectral radius among all graphs with order n and rank 5.

Partial-twuality polynomials of delta-matroids

Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-twuality polynomial of a ribbon graph. Chumutov and Vignes-Tourneret posed a problem: it would be interesting to know whether the partial duality polynomial and the related conjectures would make sense for general delta-matroids. In this paper we consider analogues of partial-twuality polynomials for delta-matroids. Various possible properties of partial-twuality polynomials of set systems are studied. We discuss the numerical implications of partial-twualities on a single element and prove that the intersection graphs can determine the partial-twuality polynomials of bouquets and normal binary delta-matroids, respectively. Finally, we give a characterization of vf-safe delta-matroids whose partial-twuality polynomials have only one term.
