New black holes with hyperscaling violation and transports of quantum critical points with magnetic impurity

We consider the magneto-transports of quantum matters doped with magnetic impurities near the quantum critical points(QCP). For this, we first find new black hole solution with hyper-scaling violation which is dual to such system. By considering the fluctuation near this exact solution, we calculated all transport coefficients using the holographic method. We applied our result to the surface state of the topological insulator with magnetic doping and found two QCP's, one bosonic and the other fermionic. It turns out that doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ correspond to different QCP's. We also investigated transports of QCP's as functions of physical parameters and found that there are phase transitions as well as crossovers from weak localization to weak anti-localization.

Violation of the viscosity/entropy bound in translationally invariant non-Fermi liquids

The shear viscosity is an important characterization of how a many-body system behaves like a fluid. We study the shear viscosity in a strongly interacting solvable model, consisting of coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) islands. As temperature is lowered, the model exhibits a crossover from an incoherent metal with local criticality to a marginal fermi liquid. We find that while the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in the marginal Fermi liquid regime satisfies a Kovtun-Son-Starinets (KSS) like bound, it can strongly violate the KSS bound in a robust temperature range of the incoherent metal regime, implying a nearly perfect fluidity of the coupled local critical SYK model. Furthermore, this model also provides the first translationally invariant example violating the KSS bound with known gauge-gravity correspondence.

Complexity growth rate, grand potential and partition function

We examine the complexity/volume conjecture and further investigate the possible connections between complexity and partition function. The complexity/volume 2.0 states that the complexity growth rate $\mathcal{\dot{C}}\sim PV$. In the standard statistics, there is a fundamental relation among $PV$, the grand potential $Ω$ and the partition function $\mathcal{Z}$. By using this relation, we are able to construct an ansatz between complexity and partition function. The complexity/partition function relation is then utilized to study the complexity of the thermofield double state of extended SYK models for various conditions. The relation between complexity growth rate and black hole phase transition is also discussed.

Sound modes and stability of momentum dissipated black branes in holography

We systematically investigate the sound modes of momentum dissipated holographic systems. In particular, we focus on the Einstein-linear axions and the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion theories in four-dimensional bulk spacetime dimensions. The sound velocities of the two theories are computed respectively and the sound attenuation of the Einstein-Maxwell-axion theory is also calculated analytically. We also obtain numeral dispersion relations in the two theories which match with our analytical results. Our results show that the sound velocity of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with additional linear axion fields is equivalent to that of 2 + 1 - dimensional Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes. It allowed us to compare our solution of the Einstein-linear axions theory with that of systems without translational invariance from another method. After the computation on the sound velocity, we calculate the quasinormal modes of scalar-type fluctuations in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion theory. The results show that a dynamical instability is observed under the condition that the null energy condition is violated.

Acoustic black holes in curved spacetime and emergence of analogue Minkowski metric

Gravity is not only able to be mimicked in flat spacetimes, but also in curved spacetimes. We study analogue gravity models in curved spacetime by considering the relativistic Gross-Pitaevskii theory and Yang-Mills theory in the fixed background spacetime geometry. The results show that acoustic metrics can be emergent from curved spacetimes yielding a Hadamard product of a real metric-tensor and an analogue metric-tensor. Taking \emph{quantum vortices} as \emph{test particles}, we evaluate their released energy ratio during the "gravitational binding". The $2+1$-dimensional flat Minkowski metric is derived from the $3+1$-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space by considering perturbations of the Yang-Mills field, which implies that Minkowski spacetime can be also simulated and the derivations presented here have some deep connections with the holographic principle.

Emergence of cosmological Friedmann equations from quantum entanglement

We study the deep connections between the concepts of quantum information theory and cosmology. Employing Fermi normal coordinates and conformal Fermi coordinates, we construct a relation between Friedmann equations of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe and entanglement. Friedmann equations are derived with the first law of entanglement under the assumption that entanglement entropy in a geodesic balls is maximized at fixed volume.

Collective diffusion and quantum chaos in holography

We define a particular combination of charge and heat currents that is decoupled with the heat current. This `heat-decoupled' (HD) current can be transported by diffusion at long distances, when some thermo-electric conductivities and susceptibilities satisfy a simple condition. Using the diffusion condition together with the Kelvin formula, we show that the HD diffusivity can be same as the charge diffusivity and also the heat diffusivity. We illustrate that such mechanism is implemented in a strongly coupled field theory, which is dual to a Lifshitz gravity with the dynamical critical index z=2. In particular, it is exhibited that both charge and heat diffusivities build the relationship to the quantum chaos. Moreover, we study the HD diffusivity without imposing the diffusion condition. In some homogeneous holographic lattices, it is found that the diffusivity/chaos relation holds independently of any parameters, including the strength of momentum relaxation, chemical potential, or temperature. We also show a counter example of the relation and discuss its limited universality.

Holographic RG flow of thermo-electric transports with momentum dissipation

We construct the holographic renormalization group (RG) flow of thermo-electric conductivities when the translational symmetry is broken. The RG flow is probed by the intrinsic observers hovering on the sliding radial membranes. We obtain the RG flow by solving a matrix-form Riccati equation. The RG flow provides a high-efficient numerical method to calculate the thermo-electric conductivities of strongly coupled systems with momentum dissipation. As an illustration, we recover the AC thermo-electric conductivities in the Einstein-Maxwell-axion model. Moreover, in several homogeneous and isotropic holographic models which dissipate the momentum and have the finite density, it is found that the RG flow of a particular combination of DC thermo-electric conductivities does not run. As a result, the DC thermal conductivity on the boundary field theory can be derived analytically, without using the conserved thermal current.

Diffusion in higher dimensional SYK model with complex fermions

We construct a new higher dimensional SYK model with complex fermions on bipartite lattices. As an extension of the original zero-dimensional SYK model, we focus on the one-dimension case, and similar Hamiltonian can be obtained in higher dimensions. This model has a conserved U(1) fermion number Q and a conjugate chemical potential μ. We evaluate the thermal and charge diffusion constants via large q expansion at low temperature limit. The results show that the diffusivity depends on the ratio of free Majorana fermions to Majorana fermions with SYK interactions. The transport properties and the butterfly velocity are accordingly calculated at low temperature. The specific heat and the thermal conductivity are proportional to the temperature. The electrical resistivity also has a linear temperature dependence term.

Charged BTZ-like black hole solutions and the diffusivity-butterfly velocity relation

We show that there exists a class of charged BTZ-like black hole solutions in Lifshitz spacetime with a hyperscaling violating factor. The charged BTZ is characterized by a charge-dependent logarithmic term in the metric function. As concrete examples, we give five such charged BTZ-like black hole solutions and the standard charged BTZ metric can be regarded as a special instance of them. In order to check the recent proposed universal relations between diffusivity and the butterfly velocity, we first compute the diffusion constants of the standard charged BTZ black holes and then extend our calculation to arbitrary dimension $d$, exponents $z$ and $θ$. Remarkably, the case $d=θ$ and $z=2$ is a very special in that the charge diffusion $D_c$ is a constant and the energy diffusion $D_e$ might be ill-defined, but $v^2_Bτ$ diverges. We also compute the diffusion constants for the case that the DC conductivity is finite but in the absence of momentum relaxation.

Magnetothermoelectric DC conductivities from holography models with hyperscaling factor in Lifshitz spacetime

We investigate an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion holographic model and obtain two branches of a charged black hole solution with a dynamic exponent and a hyperscaling violation factor when a magnetic field presents. The magnetothermoelectric DC conductivities are then calculated in terms of horizon data by means of holographic principle. We find that linear temperature dependence resistivity and quadratic temperature dependence inverse Hall angle can be achieved in our model. The well-known anomalous temperature scaling of the Nernst signal and the Seebeck coefficient of cuprate strange metals are also discussed.

Quantum computational complexity, Einstein's equations and accelerated expansion of the Universe

We study the relation between quantum computational complexity and general relativity. The quantum computational complexity is proposed to be quantified by the shortest length of geodesic quantum curves. We examine the complexity/volume duality in a geodesic causal ball in the framework of Fermi normal coordinates and derive the full non-linear Einstein equation. Using insights from the complexity/action duality, we argue that the accelerated expansion of the universe could be driven by the quantum complexity and free from coincidence and fine-tunning problems.

Hyperscaling violating black hole solutions and Magneto-thermoelectric DC conductivities in holography

We derive new black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-Axion-Dilaton theory with a hyperscaling violation exponent. We then examine the corresponding anomalous transport exhibited by cuprate strange metals in the normal phase of high-temperature superconductors via gauge/gravity duality. Linear temperature dependence resistivity and quadratic temperature dependence inverse Hall angle can be achieved. In the high temperature regime, the heat conductivity and Hall Lorenz ratio are proportional to the temperature. The Nernst signal first increases as temperature goes up but it then decreases with increasing temperature in the high temperature regime.

Wilsonian RG-flow approach to holographic transport with momentum dissipation

We systematically present a new approach for studying the coupled linear transport of holographic systems. In this approach, the set of equations for the linear perturbations can be reduced to a first-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation expressed as the radial (renormalization group) flow equation of the transport matrices. As an important application, we use this approach to compute the DC and AC conductivities of a holographic model with momentum dissipation, which can be easily read off from the nonlinear flow equations. This method also works for transport in the presence of an external magnetic field.

Universality of DC Electrical Conductivity from Holography

We propose a universal formula of dc electrical conductivity in rotational- and translational- symmetries breaking systems via the holographic duality. This formula states that the ratio of the determinant of the dc electrical conductivities along any spatial directions to the black hole area density in zero-charge limit has a universal value. As explicit illustrations, we give several examples elucidating the validation of this formula: We construct an anisotropic black brane solution, which yields linear in temperature for the in-plane resistivity and insulating behavior for the out-of-plane resistivity; We also construct a spatially isotropic black brane solution that both the linear-T and quadratic-T contributions to the resistivity can be realized.

First law of black hole mechanics in variable background fields

It is well known that in general theories of gravity with the diffeomorphism symmetry, the black hole entropy is a Noether charge. But what will happen if the symmetry is explicitly broken? By investigating the covariant first law of black hole mechanics with background fields, we show that the Noether entropy is still applicable due to the local nature of the black hole entropy. Moreover, motivated by the proposal that the cosmological constant behaves as a thermodynamic variable, we allow the non-dynamical background fields to be varied. To illustrate this general formalism, we study a generic static black brane in the massive gravity. Using the first law and the scaling argument, we obtain two Smarr formulas. We show that both of them can be retrieved without relying on the first law, hence providing a self-consistent check of the theory.

Linear and quadratic in temperature resistivity from holography

We present a new black hole solution in the asymptotic Lifshitz spacetime with a hyperscaling violating factor. A novel computational method is introduced to compute the DC thermoelectric conductivities analytically. We find that both the linear-T and quadratic-T contributions to the resistivity can be realized, indicating that a more detailed comparison with experimental phenomenology can be performed in this scenario.

Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio in Higher Derivative Gravity with Momentum Dissipation

We investigate $η/s$ in linear scalar fields modified Gauss-Bonnet theory that breaks translation invariance. We first calculate $η/s$ both analytically and numerically and show its relationship with temperature in log-log plot. Our results show that $η/s\sim T^2$ at low temperatures. The causality is also considered in this work. We then find that causality violation still happens in the presence of the linear scalar field and we suggest there is a Gauss-Bonnet coupling dependent lower limit for the effective mass of the graviton. If the effective mass of the graviton is big enough, then there will be no causality violation and hence no constraints for the Gauss-Bonnet coupling.
