Fast implicit difference schemes for time-space fractional diffusion equations with the integral fractional Laplacian

In this paper, we develop two fast implicit difference schemes for solving a class of variable-coefficient time-space fractional diffusion equations with integral fractional Laplacian (IFL). The proposed schemes utilize the graded $L1$ formula for the Caputo fractional derivative and a special finite difference discretization for IFL, where the graded mesh can capture the model problem with a weak singularity at initial time. The stability and convergence are rigorously proved via the $M$-matrix analysis, which is from the spatial discretized matrix of IFL. Moreover, the proposed schemes use the fast sum-of-exponential approximation and Toeplitz matrix algorithms to reduce the computational cost for the nonlocal property of time and space fractional derivatives, respectively. The fast schemes greatly reduce the computational work of solving the discretized linear systems from $\mathcal{O}(MN^3 + M^2N)$ by a direct solver to $\mathcal{O}(MN(\log N + N_{exp}))$ per preconditioned Krylov subspace iteration and a memory requirement from $O(MN^2)$ to $O(NN_{exp})$, where $N$ and $(N_{exp} \ll)~M$ are the number of spatial and temporal grid nodes. The spectrum of preconditioned matrix is also given for ensuring the acceleration benefit of circulant preconditioners. Finally, numerical results are presented to show the utility of the proposed methods.

Fast second-order implicit difference schemes for time distributed-order and Riesz space fractional diffusion-wave equations

In this paper, fast numerical methods are established for solving a class of time distributed-order and Riesz space fractional diffusion-wave equations. We derive new difference schemes by the weighted and shifted Gr$\ddot{\rm{u}}$nwald formula in time and the fractional centered difference formula in space. The unconditional stability and second-order convergence in time, space and distributed-order of the difference schemes are analyzed. In the one-dimensional case, the Gohberg-Semencul formula utilizing the preconditioned Krylov subspace method is developed to solve the symmetric positive definite Toeplitz linear systems derived from the proposed difference scheme. In the two-dimensional case, we also design a global preconditioned conjugate gradient method with a truncated preconditioner to solve the discretized Sylvester matrix equations. We prove that the spectrums of the preconditioned matrices in both cases are clustered around one, such that the proposed numerical methods with preconditioners converge very quickly. Some numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed difference schemes and show that the performances of the proposed fast solution algorithms are better than other numerical methods.

A fast implicit difference scheme for solving the generalized time-space fractional diffusion equations with variable coefficients

In this paper, we first propose an unconditionally stable implicit difference scheme for solving generalized time-space fractional diffusion equations (GTSFDEs) with variable coefficients. The numerical scheme utilizes the $L1$-type formula for the generalized Caputo fractional derivative in time discretization and the second-order weighted and shifted Grünwald difference (WSGD) formula in spatial discretization, respectively. Theoretical results and numerical tests are conducted to verify the $(2 - γ)$-order and 2-order of temporal and spatial convergence with $γ\in(0,1)$ the order of Caputo fractional derivative, respectively. The fast sum-of-exponential approximation of the generalized Caputo fractional derivative and Toeplitz-like coefficient matrices are also developed to accelerate the proposed implicit difference scheme. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed numerical scheme and its good potential for large-scale simulation of GTSFDEs.

Two CSCS-based iteration methods for solving absolute value equations

Recently, two families of HSS-based iteration methods are constructed for solving the system of absolute value equations (AVEs), which is a class of non-differentiable NP-hard problems. In this study, we establish the Picard-CSCS iteration method and the nonlinear CSCS-like iteration method for AVEs involving the Toeplitz matrix. Then, we analyze the convergence of the Picard-CSCS iteration method for solving AVEs. By using the theory about nonsmooth analysis, we particularly prove the convergence of the nonlinear CSCS-like iterationsolver for AVEs. The advantage of these methods is that they do not require the storage of coefficient matrices at all, and the sub-system of linear equations can be solved efficiently via the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). Therefore, computational cost and storage can be saved in practical implementations. Numerical examples including numerical solutions of nonlinear fractional diffusion equations are reported to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods in comparison with some existing methods.

Efficient variants of the CMRH method for solving a sequence of multi-shifted non-Hermitian linear systems simultaneously

Multi-shifted linear systems with non-Hermitian coefficient matrices arise in numerical solutions of time-dependent partial/fractional differential equations (PDEs/FDEs), in control theory, PageRank problems, and other research fields. We derive efficient variants of the restarted Changing Minimal Residual method based on the cost-effective Hessenberg procedure (CMRH) for this problem class. Then, we introduce a flexible variant of the algorithm that allows to use variable preconditioning at each iteration to further accelerate the convergence of shifted CMRH. We analyse the performance of the new class of methods in the numerical solution of PDEs and FDEs, also against other multi-shifted Krylov subspace methods.

An implicit integration factor method for a kind of spatial fractional diffusion equations

A kind of spatial fractional diffusion equations in this paper are studied. Firstly, an L1 formula is employed for the spatial discretization of the equations. Then, a second order scheme is derived based on the resulting semi-discrete ordinary differential system by using the implicit integration factor method, which is a class of efficient semi-implicit temporal scheme. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme is accurate even for the discontinuous coefficients.

A preconditioning technique for all-at-once system from the nonlinear tempered fractional diffusion equation

An all-at-once linear system arising from the nonlinear tempered fractional diffusion equation with variable coefficients is studied. Firstly, the nonlinear and linearized implicit schemes are proposed to approximate such the nonlinear equation with continuous/discontinuous coefficients. The stabilities and convergences of the two schemes are proved under several suitable assumptions, and numerical examples show that the convergence orders of these two schemes are $1$ in both time and space. Secondly, a nonlinear all-at-once system is derived based on the nonlinear implicit scheme, which may suitable for parallel computations. Newton's method, whose initial value is obtained by interpolating the solution of the linearized implicit scheme on the coarse space, is chosen to solve such the nonlinear all-at-once system. To accelerate the speed of solving the Jacobian equations appeared in Newton's method, a robust preconditioner is developed and analyzed. Numerical examples are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed preconditioner. Meanwhile, they also imply that such the initial guess for Newton's method is more suitable.

A second-order accurate implicit difference scheme for time fractional reaction-diffusion equation with variable coefficients and time drift term

An implicit finite difference scheme based on the $L2$-$1_σ$ formula is presented for a class of one-dimensional time fractional reaction-diffusion equations with variable coefficients and time drift term. The unconditional stability and convergence of this scheme are proved rigorously by the discrete energy method, and the optimal convergence order in the $L_2$-norm is $\mathcal{O}(τ^2 + h^2)$ with time step $τ$ and mesh size $h$. Then, the same measure is exploited to solve the two-dimensional case of this problem and a rigorous theoretical analysis of the stability and convergence is carried out. Several numerical simulations are provided to show the efficiency and accuracy of our proposed schemes and in the last numerical experiment of this work, three preconditioned iterative methods are employed for solving the linear system of the two-dimensional case.

A limited-memory block bi-diagonal Toeplitz preconditioner for block lower triangular Toeplitz system from time-space fractional diffusion equation

A block lower triangular Toeplitz system arising from time-space fractional diffusion equation is discussed. For efficient solutions of such the linear system, the preconditioned biconjugate gradient stabilized method and flexible general minimal residual method are exploited. The main contribution of this paper has two aspects: (i) A block bi-diagonal Toeplitz preconditioner is developed for the block lower triangular Toeplitz system, whose storage is of $\mathcal{O}(N)$ with $N$ being the spatial grid number; (ii) A new skew-circulant preconditioner is designed to fast calculate the inverse of the block bi-diagonal Toeplitz preconditioner multiplying a vector. Numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the efficiency of our preconditioners.

A fast second-order implicit difference method for time-space fractional advection-diffusion equation

In this paper, we consider a fast and second-order implicit difference method for approximation of a class of time-space fractional variable coefficients advection-diffusion equation. To begin with, we construct an implicit difference scheme, based on $L2-1_σ$ formula [A. A. Alikhanov, A new difference scheme for the time fractional diffusion equation, \emph{J. Comput. Phys.}, 280 (2015)] for the temporal discretization and weighted and shifted Grünwald method for the spatial discretization. Then, unconditional stability of the implicit difference scheme is proved, and we theoretically and numerically show that it converges in the $L_2$-norm with the optimal order $\mathcal{O}(τ^2 + h^2)$ with time step $τ$ and mesh size $h$. Secondly, three fast Krylov subspace solvers with suitable circulant preconditioners are designed to solve the discretized linear systems with the Toeplitz matrix. In each iterative step, these methods reduce the memory requirement of the resulting linear equations from $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N)$ and the computational complexity from $\mathcal{O}(N^3)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$, where $N$ is the number of grid nodes. Finally, numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate that these methods are more practical than the traditional direct solvers of the implicit difference methods, in terms of memory requirement and computational cost.

Restarted Hessenberg method for solving shifted nonsymmetric linear systems

It is known that the restarted full orthogonalization method (FOM) outperforms the restarted generalized minimum residual (GMRES) method in several circumstances for solving shifted linear systems when the shifts are handled simultaneously. Many variants of them have been proposed to enhance their performance. We show that another restarted method, the restarted Hessenberg method [M. Heyouni, Méthode de Hessenberg Généralisée et Applications, Ph.D. Thesis, Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille, France, 1996] based on Hessenberg procedure, can effectively be employed, which can provide accelerating convergence rate with respect to the number of restarts. Theoretical analysis shows that the new residual of shifted restarted Hessenberg method is still collinear with each other. In these cases where the proposed algorithm needs less enough CPU time elapsed to converge than the earlier established restarted shifted FOM, weighted restarted shifted FOM, and some other popular shifted iterative solvers based on the short-term vector recurrence, as shown via extensive numerical experiments involving the recent popular applications of handling the time fractional differential equations.

Fast iterative method with a second order implicit difference scheme for time-space fractional convection-diffusion equations

In this paper we want to propose practical numerical methods to solve a class of initial-boundary problem of time-space fractional convection-diffusion equations (TSFCDEs). To start with, an implicit difference method based on two-sided weighted shifted Grünwald formulae is proposed with a discussion of the stability and convergence. We construct an implicit difference scheme (IDS) and show that it converges with second order accuracy in both time and space. Then, we develop fast solution methods for handling the resulting system of linear equation with the Toeplitz matrix. The fast Krylov subspace solvers with suitable circulant preconditioners are designed to deal with the resulting Toeplitz linear systems. Each time level of these methods reduces the memory requirement of the proposed implicit difference scheme from $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N)$ and the computational complexity from $O(N^3)$ to $O(N\log N)$ in each iterative step, where $N$ is the number of grid nodes. Extensive numerical example runs show the utility of these methods over the traditional direct solvers of the implicit difference methods, in terms of computational cost and memory requirements.

Numerical Gradient Schemes for Heat Equations Based on the Collocation Polynomial and Hermite Interpolation

As is well-known, the advantage of the high-order compact difference scheme (H-OCD) is unconditionally stable and convergent with the order $O(τ^2+h^4)$ under the maximum norm. In this article, a new numerical gradient scheme based on the collocation polynomial and Hermite interpolation is presented. Moreover, the convergence order of this kind of method is also $O(τ^2+h^4)$ under the discrete maximum norm when the space step size is just twice the one of H-OCD method, which accelerates the computational process and makes the result much smoother to some extent. In addition, some corresponding analyses are made and the Richardson extrapolation technique is also considered in time direction. The results of numerical experiments are also consistent with these theoretical analysis.

Strang-type preconditioners for solving fractional diffusion equations by boundary value methods

The finite difference scheme with the shifted Grünwarld formula is employed to semi-discrete the fractional diffusion equations. This spatial discretization can reduce to the large system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with initial values. Recently, boundary value method (BVM) was developed as a popular algorithm for solving large systems of ODEs. This method requires the solutions of one or more nonsymmetric, large and sparse linear systems. In this paper, the GMRES method with the block circulant preconditioner is proposed for solving these linear systems. One of the main results is that if an $A_{ν_1,ν_2}$-stable boundary value method is used for an m-by-m system of ODEs, then the preconditioner is invertible and the preconditioned matrix can be decomposed as I+L, where I is the identity matrix and the rank of L is at most $2m(ν_1+ν_2)$. It means that when the GMRES method is applied to solve the preconditioned linear systems, the method will converge in at most $2m(ν_1+ν_2)+1$ iterations. Finally, extensive numerical experiments are reported to illustrate the effectiveness of our methods for solving the fractional diffusion equations.
