Vertical Pinching Antenna Systems (V-PAS) Aided UAV Communications

To address the limitation that existing horizontal pinching antenna systems (PAS) are primarily designed for ground users and confined to two-dimensional (2D) coverage, this paper proposes deploying a pinching antenna (PA) along the facade of urban buildings to construct a vertical pinching antenna system (V-PAS) for ultra-low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. The proposed architecture employs a dielectric waveguide continuously deployed along the full height of buildings, extending the coverage capability of PAS from the 2D plane to three-dimensional (3D) airspace, ensuring a stable line-of-sight (LoS) link. We define the concept of pinching multiplicative path loss (PMPL) to characterize the cascaded multiplicative attenuation of the waveguide and free-space path losses. It is found that PMPL is insensitive to vertical distance, rendering V-PAS highly adaptive to building heights. Furthermore, accurate and asymptotic closed-form expressions for outage probability and ergodic rate under lossy waveguide conditions are derived, respectively, and the symmetry and optimality of system performance with respect to the midpoint of the access point (AP) height are discovered and proved. The results show that V-PAS achieves performance advantages over the benchmark without PA in most ultra-low-altitude UAV communication scenarios. Only under extremely high transmission power and large UAV operational area may the outage probability of V-PAS with a lossy waveguide be inferior to that of the benchmark without PA, but the ergodic rate of V-PAS still maintains an advantage. By contrast, V-PAS with a lossless waveguide outperforms the benchmark without PA in UAV communications, representing the theoretical performance upper bound of V-PAS.

Convertible Codes: MSR-to-MSR Conversion with Optimal Access and Bandwidth

In this paper, we study convertible codes in the merge regime and focus on the minimum storage regenerating (MSR) setting, where both the initial codes and the final code admit optimal single-node repair. We propose explicit MSR-to-MSR conversion schemes and analyze their performance in terms of access cost and conversion bandwidth. We first construct convertible MSR codes in the irregular setting, where the $m$ initial codes may have different parameters, achieving optimal access cost. We further consider the practically important same-code setting, where all initial codewords are drawn from the same MSR code. By introducing a row-matching technique, we obtain constructions simultaneously achieving optimal access cost and conversion bandwidth in most parameter regimes.

Beam-focusing Analysis for Modular XL-arrays: Effect of Time Synchronization Errors

For near-field communications, it is a hardware-efficient means to form an extremely large-scale array (XL-array) by concatenating multiple modular arrays (also referred to as subarrays). In this letter, we aim to investigate the effect of time synchronization errors among transmissions of different subarrays on the beam-focusing performance. To this end, we first characterize the beam pattern function when the transmit beamforming is designed based on maximum ratio transmission (MRT) under the premise of perfect time synchronization. As this function is highly difficult for analysis, we then consider a typical case with two subarrays. Interestingly, we show that for this case, the beam-focusing effect still persists even in the presence of time synchronization errors, while the focused location is deviated from the user location with an angle offset upper-bounded by 1/M, where M denotes the number of antennas in each subarray. Subsequently, for the general case with multiple subarrays, despite analytical intractability, we numerically show that time synchronization errors give rise to an imbricated (instead of focused) beam pattern. This may significantly degrade multi-user communication performance in practice due to the reduced desired signal power and increased inter-user interference.

Pinching Antenna-Aided Spatial Multiplexing: Transceiver Design and Performance Analysis

In this paper, a novel pinching antenna-aided spatial multiplexing (PASM) architecture is conceived, which intrinsically amalgamates the benefits of flexible radiating element placement with radio-frequency (RF) chain transmission. Specifically, we leverage the deterministic phase variation along dielectric waveguides as a zero-power phase-control mechanism, where each waveguide fed by a single RF chain drives multiple pinching antennas (PAs) acquiring position-dependent phase shifts. Then, the PASM propagation environment is characterized by a realistic channel model encompassing Rician small-scale fading, correlated shadowing, and large-scale path loss. Based on this, a low-complexity vector approximate message passing (VAMP) detector is conceived, which exploits a waveguide-structured prior for jointly processing the signals associated with all PAs. Moreover, we derive an analytical upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) for the maximum likelihood (ML) detector to quantify the achievable performance limits. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PASM architecture achieves substantial signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain over the conventional phase-shifter-aided spatial multiplexing (PSSM), while the VAMP detector strikes an attractive trade-off between the system performance and computational complexity.

Performance Analysis of Pinching Antenna Systems Enabled NOMA Communications

Pinching antenna systems (PASS) have the advantages in the perspective of flexible antenna reconfiguration, line-of-sight (LoS) creation, and scalability features. To highlight the ascendancy of PASS, we survey the integration of PASS into non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. The locations of nodes are randomly distributed within a circular coverage region. The influencing factors of line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagation links from PASS to non-orthogonal nodes are taken into considered. To characterize performance of PASS-NOMA, we deduce the blockage probability and ergodic data rates expressions of two nodes over LoS/NLoS fading channels. In light of these theoretical results, the infinite diversity gain are also analyzed with near node n under non-ideal successive interference cancellation (NISIC) and far node f over LoS links. The slopes of ergodic data rate for node n with NISIC and node f were equal to zeros. In addition, the PASS-NOMA system throughput are evaluated in different transmission modes. It is shown from the numerical results that: 1) The blockage outage behaviors of PASS-NOMA networks with LoS/NLoS conditions outperform that of PASS aided traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA); 2)The employment of PASS enables the larger ergodic data rates relative to PASS-OMA networks; and 3) As the quantity of pinching antennas rises, the performance of PASS-NOMA networks are enhanced over LoS/NLoS propagation links.

DOA Estimation for Low-Altitude Networks: HAD Architectures, Methods, and Challenges

With the rapid expansion of low-altitude economy (LAE) services and the growing demand for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in air-ground networks, reliable direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation has become essential for both directional communication and sensing functions. DOA underpins beam alignment, spatial-reuse scheduling, and ISAC-critical tasks such as airspace situational awareness and multi-target monitoring. Hybrid analog-digital (HAD) architectures have emerged as a practical solution for large-aperture directional operation under stringent radio frequency (RF), analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and size, weight, and power (SWaP) constraints. However, HAD compresses antenna-domain observations through analog combining, fundamentally reshaping the measurement model and introducing new algorithmic and system-level challenges for DOA estimation. This article first reviews the principles and representative architectures of HAD, highlighting their advantages for scalable beam-centric and ISAC-oriented operation in LAE scenarios. We then provide a structured overview of HAD-enabled DOA estimation methodologies, including spatial covariance matrix (SCM) reconstruction, multi-combiner scan-based acquisition, and pilot-aided estimation, along with key design tradeoffs. Finally, we discuss open challenges and outline reliability-driven research directions toward robust, deployable HAD-enabled DOA solutions for practical ISAC-enabled low-altitude environments.

PAPR-Aware Waveform Design for Energy-Efficient MIMO-OFDM SWIPT

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) critically depends on waveform design, which governs both reliable data delivery and efficient energy harvesting. Among waveform characteristics, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) plays a pivotal role: low-PAPR signals improve power amplifier (PA) efficiency, while high-PAPR signals exploit rectifier nonlinearities to boost harvested energy. This duality makes PAPR a fundamental design challenge in SWIPT systems. To tackle this issue, we establish a unified analytical framework that characterizes the PAPR-dependent behaviors of both the PA and the rectifier, thereby revealing how waveform statistics determine end-to-end energy transfer efficiency. Building on this insight, we propose a frequency-domain resource allocation strategy for power-splitting SWIPT, where spectral segments are adaptively assigned to balance communication throughput with energy harvesting performance. Here, a key contribution is to extend SWIPT to MIMO-OFDM architectures. Despite concerns over excessive PAPR in large-scale antenna-subcarrier configurations, we demonstrate that appropriate waveform adaptation and resource optimization can transform MIMO-OFDM into an energy-efficient platform for joint data and power transfer. Finally, simulation results confirm significant improvements in PA efficiency, rectifier output, and overall energy transfer, thereby validating the practical benefits of the proposed approach.

SCA-LLM: Spectral-Attentive LLM-Based Wireless World Modeling for Agentic Communications

Future AI-native wireless networks are moving from reactive optimization to agentic decision-making that can sense, predict, and plan under fast-varying channels. This calls for wireless world models that can predict and roll out channel dynamics, for which multi-step channel state information (CSI) prediction offers a practical short-horizon look-ahead. Recent advances in foundation sequence models further motivate large language models (LLMs) as general-purpose dynamics learners when suitably adapted to non-text time-series signals. However, bridging CSI to LLMs is non-trivial because an effective adapter must expose informative spectral and temporal evolution patterns, while prior designs provide limited inductive bias to capture such channel structures. To this end, we propose SCA-LLM, a spectral-attentive LLM-based wireless world modeling framework that bridges CSI to LLMs via a spectral-channel attention (SCA) adapter. Specifically, the SCA adapter performs multi-spectral representation learning to extract informative channel features and align CSI with the LLM's sequence modeling capability, enabling parameter-efficient adaptation while keeping the LLM backbone largely frozen. Extensive simulations show that SCA-LLM achieves state-of-the-art prediction performance and strong zero-shot generalization, yielding up to -2.4 dB normalized mean squared error (NMSE) advantage over the previous LLM based method. Our ablation studies further confirm the effectiveness of the proposed SCA adapter in mitigating domain mismatch.

Joint Channel Estimation and Localization in Pinching-Antenna OFDM Systems: The Blessing of Multipath

Pinching-antenna systems (PASS) have recently attracted considerable attention owing to their capability of flexibly reconfiguring large-scale wireless channels. Motivated by this potential, we investigate the issue of joint localization and channel estimation for the uplink PASS in the presence of multipath dispersion. To this end, a comprehensive multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) uplink PASS model is first established, where the use of a cyclic prefix (CP) enables the multipath-induced time-domain dispersion to be transformed into a set of superimposed sinusoids in the frequency domain. Building upon this model, we propose a hybrid inference framework capable of accurately estimating both channel parameters and user locations. Specifically, expectation propagation is first employed to mitigate multi-user interference, while the path delays are then extracted from noisy channel state information using an orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) based approach, or a hybrid belief propagation-variational inference (BP-VI) algorithm. Then the estimated delays are subsequently refined through the embedded geometric information via an iterative localization procedure, wherein the estimated channel matrices are recursively fed back to EP. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived to characterize the fundamental estimation limits. Finally, simulation results validate that our proposed framework closely approaches the CRLB, with performance comparable to cooperative multi-base station localization, with significantly fewer RF chains and reduced hardware complexity.

Two-Dimensional Pinching-Antenna Systems: Modeling and Beamforming Design

Recently, the pinching-antenna system (PASS) has emerged as a promising architecture owing to its ability to reconfigure large-scale path loss and signal phase by activating radiation points along a dielectric waveguide. However, existing studies mainly focus on line-shaped PASS architectures, whose limited spatial flexibility constrains their applicability in multiuser and indoor scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel two-dimensional (2D) pinching-antenna system (2D-PASS) that extends the conventional line-shaped structure into a continuous dielectric waveguide plane, thereby forming a reconfigurable radiating plane capable of dynamic beam adaptation across a 2D spatial domain. An optimization framework is developed to maximize the minimum received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among user equipments (UEs) by adaptively adjusting the spatial configuration of pinching antennas (PAs), serving as an analog beamforming mechanism for dynamic spatial control. For the continuous-position scenario, a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based algorithm is proposed to efficiently explore the nonconvex search space, while a discrete variant is introduced to accommodate practical hardware constraints with limited PA placement resolution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed 2D-PASS substantially improves the minimum SNR compared with conventional line-shaped PASS and fixed-position antenna (FPA) benchmarks, while maintaining robustness under varying user distributions and distances.

Pinching-Antenna-Assisted Index Modulation: Channel Modeling, Transceiver Design, and Performance Analysis

In this paper, a novel pinching-antenna assisted index modulation (PA-IM) scheme is proposed for improving the spectral efficiency without increasing the hardware complexity, where the information bits are conveyed not only by the conventional M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols but also by the indices of pinching antenna (PA) position patterns. To realize the full potential of this scheme, this paper focuses on the comprehensive transceiver design, addressing key challenges in signal detection at the receiver and performance optimization at thetransmitter. First, a comprehensive channel model is formulated for this architecture, which sophisticatedly integrates the deterministic in-waveguide propagation effects with the stochastic nature of wireless channels, including both largescale path loss and small-scale fading. Next, to overcome the prohibitive complexity of optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detection, a low-complexity box-optimized sphere decoding (BOSD) algorithm is designed, which adaptively prunes the search space whilst preserving optimal ML performance. Furthermore, an analytical upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) is derived and validated by the simulations. Moreover, a new transmit precoding method is designed using manifold optimization, which minimizes the BER by jointly optimizing the complex-valued precoding coefficients across the waveguides for the sake of maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance of all received signal points. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PA-IM scheme attains a significant performance gain over its conventional counterparts and that the overall BER of the pinching-antenna system is substantially improved by the proposed precoding design.

A Gradient Meta-Learning Joint Optimization for Beamforming and Antenna Position in Pinching-Antenna Systems

In this paper, we consider a novel optimization design for multi-waveguide pinching-antenna systems, aiming to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) by jointly optimizing beamforming coefficients and antenna position. To handle the formulated non-convex problem, a gradient-based meta-learning joint optimization (GML-JO) algorithm is proposed. Specifically, the original problem is initially decomposed into two sub-problems of beamforming optimization and antenna position optimization through equivalent substitution. Then, the convex approximation methods are used to deal with the nonconvex constraints of sub-problems, and two sub-neural networks are constructed to calculate the sub-problems separately. Different from alternating optimization (AO), where two sub-problems are solved alternately and the solutions are influenced by the initial values, two sub-neural networks of proposed GML-JO with fixed channel coefficients are considered as local sub-tasks and the computation results are used to calculate the loss function of joint optimization. Finally, the parameters of sub-networks are updated using the average loss function over different sub-tasks and the solution that is robust to the initial value is obtained. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed GML-JO algorithm achieves 5.6 bits/s/Hz WSR within 100 iterations, yielding a 32.7\% performance enhancement over conventional AO with substantially reduced computational complexity. Moreover, the proposed GML-JO algorithm is robust to different choices of initialization and yields better performance compared with the existing optimization methods.

Safeguarding Next Generation Multiple Access Using Physical Layer Security Techniques: A Tutorial

Driven by the ever-increasing requirements of ultra-high spectral efficiency, ultra-low latency, and massive connectivity, the forefront of wireless research calls for the design of advanced next generation multiple access schemes to facilitate provisioning of these stringent demands. This inspires the embrace of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in future wireless communication networks. Nevertheless, the support of massive access via NOMA leads to additional security threats, due to the open nature of the air interface, the broadcast characteristic of radio propagation as well as intertwined relationship among paired NOMA users. To address this specific challenge, the superimposed transmission of NOMA can be explored as new opportunities for security aware design, for example, multiuser interference inherent in NOMA can be constructively engineered to benefit communication secrecy and privacy. The purpose of this tutorial is to provide a comprehensive overview on the state-of-the-art physical layer security techniques that guarantee wireless security and privacy for NOMA networks, along with the opportunities, technical challenges, and future research trends.

Two-Timescale Transmission Design for Wireless Communication Systems Aided by Active RIS

This paper considers an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system, where an M-antenna base station (BS) transmits data symbols to a single-antenna user via an N-element active RIS. We use two-timescale channel state information (CSI) in our system, so that the channel estimation overhead and feedback overhead can be decreased dramatically. A closed-form approximate expression of the achievable rate (AR) is derived and the phase shift at the active RIS is optimized. In addition, we compare the performance of the active RIS system with that of the passive RIS system. The conclusion shows that the active RIS system achieves a lager AR than the passive RIS system.

Contrastive Learning based Semantic Communication for Wireless Image Transmission

Recently, semantic communication has been widely applied in wireless image transmission systems as it can prioritize the preservation of meaningful semantic information in images over the accuracy of transmitted symbols, leading to improved communication efficiency. However, existing semantic communication approaches still face limitations in achieving considerable inference performance in downstream AI tasks like image recognition, or balancing the inference performance with the quality of the reconstructed image at the receiver. Therefore, this paper proposes a contrastive learning (CL)-based semantic communication approach to overcome these limitations. Specifically, we regard the image corruption during transmission as a form of data augmentation in CL and leverage CL to reduce the semantic distance between the original and the corrupted reconstruction while maintaining the semantic distance among irrelevant images for better discrimination in downstream tasks. Moreover, we design a two-stage training procedure and the corresponding loss functions for jointly optimizing the semantic encoder and decoder to achieve a good trade-off between the performance of image recognition in the downstream task and reconstructed quality. Simulations are finally conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the competitive approaches. In particular, the proposed method can achieve up to 56\% accuracy gain on the CIFAR10 dataset when the bandwidth compression ratio is 1/48.

Pricing for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Wireless Networks: Models and Principles

Owing to the recent advancements of meta-materials and meta-surfaces, the concept of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been embraced to meet the spectral- and energy-efficient, and yet cost-effective solutions for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. From an operational standpoint, RISs can be easily deployed on the facades of buildings and indoor walls. Albeit promising, in the actual network operation, the deployment of RISs may face challenges because of the willingness and benefits of RIS holders from the aspect of installing RISs on their properties. Accordingly, RIS-aided wireless networks are faced with a formidable mission: how to balance the wireless service providers (WSPs) and RIS holders in terms of their respective interests. To alleviate this deadlock, we focus on the application of pricing models in RIS-aided wireless networks in pursuit of a win-win solution for both sides. Specifically, we commence with a comprehensive introduction of RIS pricing with its potential applications in RIS networks, meanwhile the fundamentals of pricing models are summarized in order to benefit both RIS holders and WSPs. In addition, a Stackelberg game-based model is exemplified to illustrate the operation of utility-maximization pricing. Finally, we highlight open issues and future research directions of applying pricing models to the RIS-aided wireless networks.

RIS-Assisted Cooperative NOMA with SWIPT

This paper studies the application of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (C-NOMA) networks with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We aim for maximizing the rate of the strong user with guaranteed weak user's quality of service (QoS) by jointly optimizing power splitting factors, beamforming coefficients, and RIS reflection coefficients in two transmission phases. The formulated problem is difficult to solve due to its complex and non-convex constraints. To tackle this challenging problem, we first use alternating optimization (AO) framework to transform it into three subproblems, and then use the penalty-based arithmetic-geometric mean approximation (PBAGM) algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA)-based method to solve them. Numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the baseline schemes.

Towards Optimally Efficient Search with Deep Learning for Large-Scale MIMO Systems

This paper investigates the optimal signal detection problem with a particular interest in large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The problem is NP-hard and can be solved optimally by searching the shortest path on the decision tree. Unfortunately, the existing optimal search algorithms often involve prohibitively high complexities, which indicates that they are infeasible in large-scale MIMO systems. To address this issue, we propose a general heuristic search algorithm, namely, hyper-accelerated tree search (HATS) algorithm. The proposed algorithm employs a deep neural network (DNN) to estimate the optimal heuristic, and then use the estimated heuristic to speed up the underlying memory-bounded search algorithm. This idea is inspired by the fact that the underlying heuristic search algorithm reaches the optimal efficiency with the optimal heuristic function. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal bit error rate (BER) performance in large-scale systems, while the memory size can be bounded. In the meanwhile, it visits nearly the fewest tree nodes. This indicates that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal efficiency in practical scenarios, and thereby it is applicable for large-scale systems. Besides, the code for this paper is available at \url{https://github.com/skypitcher/hats}.
