Trustworthy Image Semantic Communication with GenAI: Explainablity, Controllability, and Efficiency

Image semantic communication (ISC) has garnered significant attention for its potential to achieve high efficiency in visual content transmission. However, existing ISC systems based on joint source-channel coding face challenges in interpretability, operability, and compatibility. To address these limitations, we propose a novel trustworthy ISC framework. This approach leverages text extraction and segmentation mapping techniques to convert images into explainable semantics, while employing Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) for multiple downstream inference tasks. We also introduce a multi-rate ISC transmission protocol that dynamically adapts to both the received explainable semantic content and specific task requirements at the receiver. Simulation results demonstrate that our framework achieves explainable learning, decoupled training, and compatible transmission in various application scenarios. Finally, some intriguing research directions and application scenarios are identified.

A Framework for Fine-Tuning LLMs using Heterogeneous Feedback

Large language models (LLMs) have been applied to a wide range of tasks, including text summarization, web navigation, and chatbots. They have benefitted from supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) following an unsupervised pretraining. These datasets can be difficult to collect, limited in scope, and vary in sample quality. Additionally, datasets can vary extensively in supervision format, from numerical to binary as well as multi-dimensional with many different values. We present a framework for fine-tuning LLMs using heterogeneous feedback, which has two main components. First, we combine the heterogeneous feedback data into a single supervision format, compatible with methods like SFT and RLHF. Next, given this unified feedback dataset, we extract a high-quality and diverse subset to obtain performance increases potentially exceeding the full dataset. We conduct extensive experiments to understand the effectiveness of these techniques for incorporating heterogeneous feedback, and demonstrate improvements from using a high-quality and diverse subset of the data. We find that our framework is able to improve models in multiple areas simultaneously, such as in instruction following and bias reduction.

MemWarp: Discontinuity-Preserving Cardiac Registration with Memorized Anatomical Filters

Many existing learning-based deformable image registration methods impose constraints on deformation fields to ensure they are globally smooth and continuous. However, this assumption does not hold in cardiac image registration, where different anatomical regions exhibit asymmetric motions during respiration and movements due to sliding organs within the chest. Consequently, such global constraints fail to accommodate local discontinuities across organ boundaries, potentially resulting in erroneous and unrealistic displacement fields. In this paper, we address this issue with MemWarp, a learning framework that leverages a memory network to store prototypical information tailored to different anatomical regions. MemWarp is different from earlier approaches in two main aspects: firstly, by decoupling feature extraction from similarity matching in moving and fixed images, it facilitates more effective utilization of feature maps; secondly, despite its capability to preserve discontinuities, it eliminates the need for segmentation masks during model inference. In experiments on a publicly available cardiac dataset, our method achieves considerable improvements in registration accuracy and producing realistic deformations, outperforming state-of-the-art methods with a remarkable 7.1\% Dice score improvement over the runner-up semi-supervised method. Source code will be available at https://github.com/tinymilky/Mem-Warp.

Learning to Reduce: Towards Improving Performance of Large Language Models on Structured Data

Large Language Models (LLMs) have been achieving competent performance on a wide range of downstream tasks, yet existing work shows that inference on structured data is challenging for LLMs. This is because LLMs need to either understand long structured data or select the most relevant evidence before inference, and both approaches are not trivial. This paper proposes a framework, Learning to Reduce, that fine-tunes a language model with On-Policy Learning to generate a reduced version of an input structured data. When compared to state-of-the-art LLMs like GPT-4, Learning to Reduce not only achieves outstanding performance in reducing the input, but shows generalizability on different datasets. We further show that the model fine-tuned with our framework helps LLMs better perform on table QA tasks especially when the context is longer.

Anomaly Detection Utilizing a Riemann Metric for Robust Myoelectric Pattern Recognition

Traditional myoelectric pattern recognition (MPR) systems excel within controlled laboratory environments but they are interfered when confronted with anomaly or novel motions not encountered during the training phase. Utilizing metric ways to distinguish the target and novel motions based on extractors compared to training set is a prevalent idea to alleviate such interference. An innovative method for anomaly motion detection was proposed based on simplified log-Euclidean distance (SLED) of symmetric positive definite manifolds. The SLED enhances the discrimination between target and novel motions. Moreover, it generates a more flexible shaping of motion boundaries to segregate target and novel motions, therefore effectively detecting the novel ones. The proposed method was evaluated using surface-electromyographic (sEMG) armband data recorded while performing 6 target and 8 novel hand motions. Based on linear discriminate analysis (LDA) and convolution prototype network (CPN) feature extractors, the proposed method achieved accuracies of 89.7% and 93.9% in novel motion detection respectively, while maintaining a target motion classification accuracy of 90%, outperforming the existing ones with statistical significance (p<0.05). This study provided a valuable solution for improving the robustness of MPR systems against anomaly motion interference.

CodeScore-R: An Automated Robustness Metric for Assessing the FunctionalCorrectness of Code Synthesis

Evaluation metrics are crucial in the field of code synthesis. Commonly used code evaluation metrics canbe classified into three types: match-based, semantic-based, and execution-based. Among them, the execution-basedPass@k metric accurately assesses the functionality of predicted code by executing test cases. However, calculatingthis metric requires a significant amount of overhead, necessitating the design of an automated evaluation metric thatcan assess the functionality of predicted code without the need for test cases. Additionally, a good evaluation metricshould be robust, that is the metric can maintain its accuracy even when the predicted code undergoes minor changes. To address these challenges, we propose an automated robust metric, called CodeScore-R, based on UniXcoder andcontrastive learning, for evaluating the functionality of code synthesis. CodeScore-R employs techniques such assketch-based processing, syntactic-equivalent transformations, and mutation testing to effectively mitigate theinterference caused by identifiers, syntax structures, and operators on evaluation results. Experimental resultsdemonstrate that in the tasks of code generation and migration in Java and Python, CodeScore-R outperforms otherevaluation metrics and is more closely aligned with the Pass@k metric, while exhibiting stronger robustness.

LMB: Augmenting PCIe Devices with CXL-Linked Memory Buffer

PCIe devices, such as SSDs and GPUs, are pivotal in modern data centers, and their value is set to grow amidst the emergence of AI and large models. However, these devices face onboard DRAM shortage issue due to internal space limitation, preventing accommodation of sufficient DRAM modules alongside flash or GPU processing chips. Current solutions either curb device-internal memory usage or supplement slower non-DRAM mediums, prove inadequate or performance-compromising. This paper introduces the Linked Memory Buffer (LMB), a scalable solution utilizing the CXL memory expander to tackle device onboard memory deficiencies. The low-latency of CXL enables LMB to utilize emerging DRAM memory expander to efficiently supplement device onboard DRAM with minimal impact on performance.

Antiferromagnetic order in a layered magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ probed by resonant soft x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Se$_4$, stabilized via non-equilibrium molecular beam epitaxy, is investigated by resonant soft x-ray scattering. Kiessig fringes are observed, confirming a high sample quality and a thin film thickness of 10 septuple layers ($\sim$13 nm). An antiferromagnetic Bragg peak is observed at the structurally forbidden reflection, whose magnetic nature is validated by studying its temperature, energy, and polarization dependence. Through a detailed analysis, an A-type antiferromagetic order with in-plane moments is implied. This alternative spin structure in MnBi$_2$Se$_4$, in contrast to the Ising antiferromagnetic states in other magnetic topological insulators, might be relevant for hosting new topological states.

Unified Hallucination Detection for Multimodal Large Language Models

Despite significant strides in multimodal tasks, Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are plagued by the critical issue of hallucination. The reliable detection of such hallucinations in MLLMs has, therefore, become a vital aspect of model evaluation and the safeguarding of practical application deployment. Prior research in this domain has been constrained by a narrow focus on singular tasks, an inadequate range of hallucination categories addressed, and a lack of detailed granularity. In response to these challenges, our work expands the investigative horizons of hallucination detection. We present a novel meta-evaluation benchmark, MHaluBench, meticulously crafted to facilitate the evaluation of advancements in hallucination detection methods. Additionally, we unveil a novel unified multimodal hallucination detection framework, UNIHD, which leverages a suite of auxiliary tools to validate the occurrence of hallucinations robustly. We demonstrate the effectiveness of UNIHD through meticulous evaluation and comprehensive analysis. We also provide strategic insights on the application of specific tools for addressing various categories of hallucinations.

Towards Ultra-High-Definition Image Deraining: A Benchmark and An Efficient Method

Despite significant progress has been made in image deraining, existing approaches are mostly carried out on low-resolution images. The effectiveness of these methods on high-resolution images is still unknown, especially for ultra-high-definition (UHD) images, given the continuous advancement of imaging devices. In this paper, we focus on the task of UHD image deraining, and contribute the first large-scale UHD image deraining dataset, 4K-Rain13k, that contains 13,000 image pairs at 4K resolution. Based on this dataset, we conduct a benchmark study on existing methods for processing UHD images. Furthermore, we develop an effective and efficient vision MLP-based architecture (UDR-Mixer) to better solve this task. Specifically, our method contains two building components: a spatial feature rearrangement layer that captures long-range information of UHD images, and a frequency feature modulation layer that facilitates high-quality UHD image reconstruction. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art approaches while maintaining a lower model complexity. The code and dataset will be available at https://github.com/cschenxiang/UDR-Mixer.

Continual Multimodal Knowledge Graph Construction

Current Multimodal Knowledge Graph Construction (MKGC) models struggle with the real-world dynamism of continuously emerging entities and relations, often succumbing to catastrophic forgetting-loss of previously acquired knowledge. This study introduces benchmarks aimed at fostering the development of the continual MKGC domain. We further introduce MSPT framework, designed to surmount the shortcomings of existing MKGC approaches during multimedia data processing. MSPT harmonizes the retention of learned knowledge (stability) and the integration of new data (plasticity), outperforming current continual learning and multimodal methods. Our results confirm MSPT's superior performance in evolving knowledge environments, showcasing its capacity to navigate balance between stability and plasticity.

FactCHD: Benchmarking Fact-Conflicting Hallucination Detection

Despite their impressive generative capabilities, LLMs are hindered by fact-conflicting hallucinations in real-world applications. The accurate identification of hallucinations in texts generated by LLMs, especially in complex inferential scenarios, is a relatively unexplored area. To address this gap, we present FactCHD, a dedicated benchmark designed for the detection of fact-conflicting hallucinations from LLMs. FactCHD features a diverse dataset that spans various factuality patterns, including vanilla, multi-hop, comparison, and set operation. A distinctive element of FactCHD is its integration of fact-based evidence chains, significantly enhancing the depth of evaluating the detectors' explanations. Experiments on different LLMs expose the shortcomings of current approaches in detecting factual errors accurately. Furthermore, we introduce Truth-Triangulator that synthesizes reflective considerations by tool-enhanced ChatGPT and LoRA-tuning based on Llama2, aiming to yield more credible detection through the amalgamation of predictive results and evidence. RSDehamba: Lightweight Vision Mamba for Remote Sensing Satellite Image Dehazing

Remote sensing image dehazing (RSID) aims to remove nonuniform and physically irregular haze factors for high-quality image restoration. The emergence of CNNs and Transformers has taken extraordinary strides in the RSID arena. However, these methods often struggle to demonstrate the balance of adequate long-range dependency modeling and maintaining computational efficiency. To this end, we propose the first lightweight network on the mamba-based model called RSDhamba in the field of RSID. Greatly inspired by the recent rise of Selective State Space Model (SSM) for its superior performance in modeling linear complexity and remote dependencies, our designed RSDehamba integrates the SSM framework into the U-Net architecture. Specifically, we propose the Vision Dehamba Block (VDB) as the core component of the overall network, which utilizes the linear complexity of SSM to achieve the capability of global context encoding. Simultaneously, the Direction-aware Scan Module (DSM) is designed to dynamically aggregate feature exchanges over different directional domains to effectively enhance the flexibility of sensing the spatially varying distribution of haze. In this way, our RSDhamba fully demonstrates the superiority of spatial distance capture dependencies and channel information exchange for better extraction of haze features. Extensive experimental results on widely used benchmarks validate the surpassing performance of our RSDehamba against existing state-of-the-art methods.

As an example of the applications of extended Skyrme MDI, we also present the results obtained with the extended Skyrme momentum-dependent interaction in the improved quantum molecular dynamics model (ImQMD), and the influence of the effective mass splitting on the isospin sensitive observables, i.e., the single and double neutron-to-proton ratios, is discussed again.

Learning A Spiking Neural Network for Efficient Image Deraining

Recently, spiking neural networks (SNNs) have demonstrated substantial potential in computer vision tasks. In this paper, we present an Efficient Spiking Deraining Network, called ESDNet. Our work is motivated by the observation that rain pixel values will lead to a more pronounced intensity of spike signals in SNNs. However, directly applying deep SNNs to image deraining task still remains a significant challenge. This is attributed to the information loss and training difficulties that arise from discrete binary activation and complex spatio-temporal dynamics. To this end, we develop a spiking residual block to convert the input into spike signals, then adaptively optimize the membrane potential by introducing attention weights to adjust spike responses in a data-driven manner, alleviating information loss caused by discrete binary activation. By this way, our ESDNet can effectively detect and analyze the characteristics of rain streaks by learning their fluctuations. This also enables better guidance for the deraining process and facilitates high-quality image reconstruction. Instead of relying on the ANN-SNN conversion strategy, we introduce a gradient proxy strategy to directly train the model for overcoming the challenge of training. Experimental results show that our approach gains comparable performance against ANN-based methods while reducing energy consumption by 54%. The code source is available at https://github.com/MingTian99/ESDNet.

QuadraNet V2: Efficient and Sustainable Training of High-Order Neural Networks with Quadratic Adaptation

Machine learning is evolving towards high-order models that necessitate pre-training on extensive datasets, a process associated with significant overheads. Traditional models, despite having pre-trained weights, are becoming obsolete due to architectural differences that obstruct the effective transfer and initialization of these weights. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel framework, QuadraNet V2, which leverages quadratic neural networks to create efficient and sustainable high-order learning models. Our method initializes the primary term of the quadratic neuron using a standard neural network, while the quadratic term is employed to adaptively enhance the learning of data non-linearity or shifts. This integration of pre-trained primary terms with quadratic terms, which possess advanced modeling capabilities, significantly augments the information characterization capacity of the high-order network. By utilizing existing pre-trained weights, QuadraNet V2 reduces the required GPU hours for training by 90\% to 98.4\% compared to training from scratch, demonstrating both efficiency and effectiveness.

Real-time Neural Woven Fabric Rendering

Woven fabrics are widely used in applications of realistic rendering, where real-time capability is also essential. However, rendering realistic woven fabrics in real time is challenging due to their complex structure and optical appearance, which cause aliasing and noise without many samples. The core of this issue is a multi-scale representation of the fabric shading model, which allows for a fast range query. Some previous neural methods deal with the issue at the cost of training on each material, which limits their practicality. In this paper, we propose a lightweight neural network to represent different types of woven fabrics at different scales. Thanks to the regularity and repetitiveness of woven fabric patterns, our network can encode fabric patterns and parameters as a small latent vector, which is later interpreted by a small decoder, enabling the representation of different types of fabrics. By applying the pixel's footprint as input, our network achieves multi-scale representation. Moreover, our network is fast and occupies little storage because of its lightweight structure. As a result, our method achieves rendering and editing woven fabrics at nearly 60 frames per second on an RTX 3090, showing a quality close to the ground truth and being free from visible aliasing and noise.
