Proposal for a Bell test in cavity optomagnonics

We present a proposal to test Bell inequality in the emerging field of cavity optomagnonics, where a sphere of ferromagnetic crystal supports two optical whispering gallery modes and one magnon mode. The two optical modes are driven by two laser pulses, respectively. Entanglement between magnon mode and one of the two optical modes will be generated by the first pulse, and the state of magnon mode is subsequently mapped into another optical mode via the second pulse. Hence correlated photon-photon pairs is created out of the cavity. A Bell test can be implemented using these pairs, which enables us to test local hidden-variable models at macroscopic optomagnonical system. Our results show that a significant violation of Bell inequality can be obtained in the experimentally relevant weak-coupling regime. The violation of Bell inequality not only verifies the entanglement between magnons and photons, but also implies that cavity optomagnonics is a promising platform for quantum information processing tasks.

Self-consistent Gradient-like Eigen Decomposition in Solving Schrödinger Equations

The Schrödinger equation is at the heart of modern quantum mechanics. Since exact solutions of the ground state are typically intractable, standard approaches approximate Schrödinger equation as forms of nonlinear generalized eigenvalue problems $F(V)V = SVΛ$ in which $F(V)$, the matrix to be decomposed, is a function of its own top-$k$ smallest eigenvectors $V$, leading to a "self-consistency problem". Traditional iterative methods heavily rely on high-quality initial guesses of $V$ generated via domain-specific heuristics methods based on quantum mechanics. In this work, we eliminate such a need for domain-specific heuristics by presenting a novel framework, Self-consistent Gradient-like Eigen Decomposition (SCGLED) that regards $F(V)$ as a special "online data generator", thus allows gradient-like eigendecomposition methods in streaming $k$-PCA to approach the self-consistency of the equation from scratch in an iterative way similar to online learning. With several critical numerical improvements, SCGLED is robust to initial guesses, free of quantum-mechanism-based heuristics designs, and neat in implementation. Our experiments show that it not only can simply replace traditional heuristics-based initial guess methods with large performance advantage (achieved averagely 25x more precise than the best baseline in similar wall time), but also is capable of finding highly precise solutions independently without any traditional iterative methods.

A Simple Information-Based Approach to Unsupervised Domain-Adaptive Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) is a fine-grained sentiment analysis task which aims to extract the aspects from sentences and identify their corresponding sentiments. Aspect term extraction (ATE) is the crucial step for ABSA. Due to the expensive annotation for aspect terms, we often lack labeled target domain data for fine-tuning. To address this problem, many approaches have been proposed recently to transfer common knowledge in an unsupervised way, but such methods have too many modules and require expensive multi-stage preprocessing. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective technique based on mutual information maximization, which can serve as an additional component to enhance any kind of model for cross-domain ABSA and ATE. Furthermore, we provide some analysis of this approach. Experiment results show that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods for cross-domain ABSA by 4.32% Micro-F1 on average over 10 different domain pairs. Apart from that, our method can be extended to other sequence labeling tasks, such as named entity recognition (NER).

Ontology-enhanced Prompt-tuning for Few-shot Learning

Few-shot Learning (FSL) is aimed to make predictions based on a limited number of samples. Structured data such as knowledge graphs and ontology libraries has been leveraged to benefit the few-shot setting in various tasks. However, the priors adopted by the existing methods suffer from challenging knowledge missing, knowledge noise, and knowledge heterogeneity, which hinder the performance for few-shot learning. In this study, we explore knowledge injection for FSL with pre-trained language models and propose ontology-enhanced prompt-tuning (OntoPrompt). Specifically, we develop the ontology transformation based on the external knowledge graph to address the knowledge missing issue, which fulfills and converts structure knowledge to text. We further introduce span-sensitive knowledge injection via a visible matrix to select informative knowledge to handle the knowledge noise issue. To bridge the gap between knowledge and text, we propose a collective training algorithm to optimize representations jointly. We evaluate our proposed OntoPrompt in three tasks, including relation extraction, event extraction, and knowledge graph completion, with eight datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach can obtain better few-shot performance than baselines.

TPAD: Identifying Effective Trajectory Predictions Under the Guidance of Trajectory Anomaly Detection Model

Trajectory Prediction (TP) is an important research topic in computer vision and robotics fields. Recently, many stochastic TP models have been proposed to deal with this problem and have achieved better performance than the traditional models with deterministic trajectory outputs. However, these stochastic models can generate a number of future trajectories with different qualities. They are lack of self-evaluation ability, that is, to examine the rationality of their prediction results, thus failing to guide users to identify high-quality ones from their candidate results. This hinders them from playing their best in real applications. In this paper, we make up for this defect and propose TPAD, a novel TP evaluation method based on the trajectory Anomaly Detection (AD) technique. In TPAD, we firstly combine the Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) technique and the experience in the AD and TP field to automatically design an effective trajectory AD model. Then, we utilize the learned trajectory AD model to examine the rationality of the predicted trajectories, and screen out good TP results for users. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that TPAD can effectively identify near-optimal prediction results, improving stochastic TP models' practical application effect.

Optimal Update for Energy Harvesting Sensor with Reliable Backup Energy

In this paper, we consider an information update system where a wireless sensor sends timely updates to the destination over an erasure channel with the supply of harvested energy and reliable backup energy. The metric Age of Information(AoI) is adopted to measure the timeliness of the received updates at the destination. We aim to find the optimal information updating policy that minimizes the time-average weighted sum of the AoI and the reliable backup energy cost by formulating an infinite state Markov decision process(MDP). The optimal information updating policy is proved to have a threshold structure. Based on this special structure, an algorithm for efficiently computing the optimal policy is proposed. Numerical results show that the optimal updating policy proposed outperforms baseline policies.

On Robustness and Bias Analysis of BERT-based Relation Extraction

Fine-tuning pre-trained models have achieved impressive performance on standard natural language processing benchmarks. However, the resultant model generalizability remains poorly understood. We do not know, for example, how excellent performance can lead to the perfection of generalization models. In this study, we analyze a fine-tuned BERT model from different perspectives using relation extraction. We also characterize the differences in generalization techniques according to our proposed improvements. From empirical experimentation, we find that BERT suffers a bottleneck in terms of robustness by way of randomizations, adversarial and counterfactual tests, and biases (i.e., selection and semantic). These findings highlight opportunities for future improvements. Our open-sourced testbed DiagnoseRE is available in \url{https://github.com/zjunlp/DiagnoseRE}.

AliCG: Fine-grained and Evolvable Conceptual Graph Construction for Semantic Search at Alibaba

Conceptual graphs, which is a particular type of Knowledge Graphs, play an essential role in semantic search. Prior conceptual graph construction approaches typically extract high-frequent, coarse-grained, and time-invariant concepts from formal texts. In real applications, however, it is necessary to extract less-frequent, fine-grained, and time-varying conceptual knowledge and build taxonomy in an evolving manner. In this paper, we introduce an approach to implementing and deploying the conceptual graph at Alibaba. Specifically, We propose a framework called AliCG which is capable of a) extracting fine-grained concepts by a novel bootstrapping with alignment consensus approach, b) mining long-tail concepts with a novel low-resource phrase mining approach, c) updating the graph dynamically via a concept distribution estimation method based on implicit and explicit user behaviors. We have deployed the framework at Alibaba UC Browser. Extensive offline evaluation as well as online A/B testing demonstrate the efficacy of our approach.

Harmonic Retrieval with $L_1$-Tucker Tensor Decomposition

Harmonic retrieval (HR) has a wide range of applications in the scenes where signals are modelled as a summation of sinusoids. Past works have developed a number of approaches to recover the original signals. Most of them rely on classical singular value decomposition, which are vulnerable to unexpected outliers. In this paper, we present new decomposition algorithms of third-order complex-valued tensors with $L_1$-principle component analysis ($L_1$-PCA) of complex data and apply them to a novel random access HR model in presence of outliers. We also develop a novel subcarrier recovery method for the proposed model. Simulations are designed to compare our proposed method with some existing tensor-based algorithms for HR. The results demonstrate the outlier-insensitivity of the proposed method.

Fed2: Feature-Aligned Federated Learning

Federated learning learns from scattered data by fusing collaborative models from local nodes. However, the conventional coordinate-based model averaging by FedAvg ignored the random information encoded per parameter and may suffer from structural feature misalignment. In this work, we propose Fed2, a feature-aligned federated learning framework to resolve this issue by establishing a firm structure-feature alignment across the collaborative models. Fed2 is composed of two major designs: First, we design a feature-oriented model structure adaptation method to ensure explicit feature allocation in different neural network structures. Applying the structure adaptation to collaborative models, matchable structures with similar feature information can be initialized at the very early training stage. During the federated learning process, we then propose a feature paired averaging scheme to guarantee aligned feature distribution and maintain no feature fusion conflicts under either IID or non-IID scenarios. Eventually, Fed2 could effectively enhance the federated learning convergence performance under extensive homo- and heterogeneous settings, providing excellent convergence speed, accuracy, and computation/communication efficiency.

Automated Runtime-Aware Scheduling for Multi-Tenant DNN Inference on GPU

With the fast development of deep neural networks (DNNs), many real-world applications are adopting multiple models to conduct compound tasks, such as co-running classification, detection, and segmentation models on autonomous vehicles. Such multi-tenant DNN inference cases greatly exacerbate the computational complexity and call for comprehensive collaboration for graph-level operator scheduling, runtime-level resource awareness, as well as hardware scheduler support. However, the current scheduling support for such multi-tenant inference is still relatively backward. In this work, we propose a resource-aware scheduling framework for efficient multi-tenant DNN inference on GPU, which automatically coordinates DNN computing in different execution levels. Leveraging the unified scheduling intermediate representation and the automated ML-based searching algorithm, optimal schedules could be generated to wisely adjust model concurrency and interleave DNN model operators, maintaining a continuously balanced resource utilization across the entire inference process, and eventually improving the runtime efficiency. Experiments show that we could consistently achieve 1.3-1.7x speed-up, compared to regular DNN runtime libraries (e.g., CuDNN, TVM) and particular concurrent scheduling methods (e.g., NVIDIA Multi-Stream).

Normal vs. Adversarial: Salience-based Analysis of Adversarial Samples for Relation Extraction

Recent neural-based relation extraction approaches, though achieving promising improvement on benchmark datasets, have reported their vulnerability towards adversarial attacks. Thus far, efforts mostly focused on generating adversarial samples or defending adversarial attacks, but little is known about the difference between normal and adversarial samples. In this work, we take the first step to leverage the salience-based method to analyze those adversarial samples. We observe that salience tokens have a direct correlation with adversarial perturbations. We further find the adversarial perturbations are either those tokens not existing in the training set or superficial cues associated with relation labels. To some extent, our approach unveils the characters against adversarial samples. We release an open-source testbed, "DiagnoseAdv" in https://github.com/zjunlp/DiagnoseAdv.

Gyrokinetic simulations of electric current generation in ion temperature gradient driven turbulence

Gyrokinetic simulations in the collisionless limit demonstrate the physical mechanisms and the amplitude of the current driven by turbulence. Simulation results show the spatio-temporal variation of the turbulence driven current and its connection to the divergence of the Reynolds stress and the turbulence acceleration. Fine structures (a few ion Larmor radii) of the turbulence induced current are observed near the rational surfaces with the arbitrary wavelength solver of the quasi-neutrality equation. The divergence of the Reynolds stress plays a major role in the generation of these fine structures. The so-called "spontaneous" current is featured with large local magnitude near the rational surfaces.

Optimal Update in Energy Harvesting Aided Terahertz Communications with Random Blocking

In this paper, we consider an information update system where wireless sensor sends timely updates to the destination over a random blocking terahertz channel with the supply of harvested energy and reliable energy backup. The paper aims to find the optimal information updating policy that minimize the time-average weighted sum of the Age of information(AoI) and the reliable energy costs by formulating an infinite state Markov decision process(MDP). With the derivation of the monotonicity of value function on each component, the optimal information updating policy is proved to have a threshold structure. Based on this special structure, an algorithm for efficiently computing the optimal policy is proposed. Numerical results show that the optimal updating policy proposed outperforms baseline policies.

Magnetic-field effect in high-order above-threshold ionization

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of the magnetic component of an electromagnetic field on high-order above-threshold ionization of xenon atoms driven by ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses. The nondipole shift of the electron momentum distribution along the light-propagation direction for high energy electrons beyond the classical cutoff is found to be vastly different from that below the cutoff. A V-shape structure in the momentum dependence of the nondipole shift above the cutoff is identified for the first time. With the help of classical and quantum-orbit analysis, we show that large-angle rescattering of the electrons strongly alters the partitioning of the photon momentum between electron and ion. The sensitivity of the observed nondipole shift to the electronic structure of the target atom is confirmed by three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations for different model potentials.

What Should Future Wireless Network Architectures Be?

The accelerated convergence of digital and real-world lifestyles has imposed unprecedented demands on today's wireless network architectures, as it is highly desirable for such architectures to support wireless devices everywhere with high capacity and minimal signaling overhead. Conventional architectures, such as cellular architectures, are not able to satisfy these requirements simultaneously, and are thus no longer suitable for the future era. In this paper, we propose a capacity-centric (C$^2$) architecture for future wireless communication networks. It is designed based on the principles of maximizing the number of non-overlapping clusters with the average cluster capacity guaranteed to be higher than a certain threshold, and thus provides a flexible way to balance the capacity requirement against the signaling overhead. Our analytical results reveal that C$^2$ has superior generality, wherein both the cellular and the fully coordinated architectures can be viewed as its extreme cases. Simulation results show that the average capacity of C$^2$ is at least three times higher compared to that of the cellular architecture. More importantly, different from the widely adopted conventional wisdom that base-station distributions dominate architecture designs, we find that the C$^2$ architecture is independent of base-station distributions, and instead user-side information should be the focus in future wireless network architecture designs.

DeepSCC: Source Code Classification Based on Fine-Tuned RoBERTa

In software engineering-related tasks (such as programming language tag prediction based on code snippets from Stack Overflow), the programming language classification for code snippets is a common task. In this study, we propose a novel method DeepSCC, which uses a fine-tuned RoBERTa model to classify the programming language type of the source code. In our empirical study, we choose a corpus collected from Stack Overflow, which contains 224,445 pairs of code snippets and corresponding language types. After comparing nine state-of-the-art baselines from the fields of source code classification and neural text classification in terms of four performance measures (i.e., Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1), we show the competitiveness of our proposed method DeepSCC
