Strain-activated structural anisotropy in BaFe2As2

High-resolution single crystal neutron diffraction measurements are presented probing the magnetostructural response to uniaxial pressure in the iron pnictide parent system BaFe2As2. Scattering data reveal a strain-activated, anisotropic broadening of nuclear Bragg reflections, which increases upon cooling below the resolvable onset of global orthorhombicity. This anisotropy in lattice coherence continues to diverge until a lower temperature scale---the first-order onset of antiferromagnetism---is reached. Our data suggest that antiferromagnetism and strong magnetoelastic coupling drive the strain-activated lattice response in this material and that the development of anisotropic lattice coherence under strain is the physical origin for the anomalous nematic anisotropy in this compound.

Consensus Control for Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems

We study distributed output feedback control for a heterogeneous multi-agent system (MAS), consisting of N different continuous-time linear dynamical systems. For achieving output consensus, a virtual reference model is assumed to generate the desired trajectory that the MAS is required to track and synchronize. A distinct feature of our results lies in the local optimality and robustness achieved by our proposed consensus control algorithm. In addition our study is focused on the case when the available output measurements contain only relative information from the neighboring agents and reference signal. Indeed by exploiting properties of strictly positive real (SPR) transfer matrices, conditions are derived for the existence of distributed output feedback control protocols, and solutions are proposed to synthesize the stabilizing and consensus control protocol over a given connected digraph. It is shown that design techniques based on the LQG, LQG/LTR and H-infinity loop shaping can all be directly applied to synthesize the consensus output feedback control protocol, thereby ensuring the local optimality and stability robustness. Finally the reference trajectory is required to be transmitted to only one or a few agents and no local reference models are employed in the feedback controllers thereby eliminating synchronization of the local reference models. Our results complement the existing ones, and are illustrated by a numerical example.

Delay-Optimal Buffer-Aware Probabilistic Scheduling with Adaptive Transmission

Cross-layer scheduling is a promising way to improve Quality of Service (QoS) given a power constraint. In this paper, we investigate the system with random data arrival and adaptive transmission. Probabilistic scheduling strategies aware of the buffer state are applied to generalize conventional deterministic scheduling. Based on this, the average delay and power consumption are analysed by Markov reward process. The optimal delay-power tradeoff curve is the Pareto frontier of the feasible delay-power region. It is proved that the optimal delay-power tradeoff is piecewise-linear, whose vertices are obtained by deterministic strategies. Moreover, the corresponding strategies of the optimal tradeoff curve are threshold-based, hence can be obtained by a proposed effective algorithm. On the other hand, we formulate a linear programming to minimize the average delay given a fixed power constraint. By varying the power constraint, the optimal delay-power tradeoff curve can also be obtained. It is demonstrated that the algorithm result and the optimization result match each other, and are further validated by Monte-Carlo simulation.

The influence of electron-doping on the ground state of (Sr{1-x}La{x})2IrO4

The evolution of the electronic properties of electron-doped (Sr{1-x}La{x})2IrO4 is experimentally explored as the doping limit of La is approached. As electrons are introduced, the electronic ground state transitions from a spin-orbit Mott phase into an electronically phase separated state, where long-range magnetic order vanishes beyond x = 0.02 and charge transport remains percolative up to the limit of La substitution (x~0.06). In particular, the electronic ground state remains inhomogeneous even beyond the collapse of the parent state's long-range antiferromagnetic order, while persistent short-range magnetism survives up to the highest La-substitution levels. Furthermore, as electrons are doped into Sr2IrO4, we observe the appearance of a low temperature magnetic glass-like state intermediate to the complete suppression of antiferromagnetic order. Universalities and differences in the electron-doped phase diagrams of single layer and bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper strontium iridates are discussed.

First-order melting of a weak spin-orbit Mott insulator into a correlated metal

The electronic phase diagram of the weak spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr(1-x)Lax)3Ir2O7 is determined via an exhaustive experimental study. Upon doping electrons via La substitution, an immediate collapse in resistivity occurs along with a narrow regime of nanoscale phase separation comprised of antiferromagnetic, insulating regions and paramagnetic, metallic puddles persisting until x~0.04. Continued electron doping results in an abrupt, first-order phase boundary where the Neel state is suppressed and a homogenous, correlated, metallic state appears with an enhanced spin susceptibility and local moments. As the metallic state is stabilized, a weak structural distortion develops and suggests a competing instability with the parent spin-orbit Mott state.

Anomalous CDW ground state in Cu$_2$Se: a wave-like fluctuation of $\it{dc}$ I-V curve near 50 K

A charge density wave (CDW) ground state is observed in polycrystalline Cu$_2$Se below 125 K, which corresponds to an energy gap of 40.9 meV and an electron-phonon coupling constant of 0.6. Due to the polycrystalline structure, the Peierls transition process has been expanded to a wide temperature range from 90 to 160 K. The Hall carrier concentration shows a continuous decrease from 2.1$\times$10$^{20}$ to 1.6$\times$10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ in the temperature range from 160 K to 80 K, while almost unchanged above 160 K and below 90 K. After entering the CDW ground state, a wave-like fluctuation was observed in the I-V curve near 50 K, which exhibits as a periodic negative differential resistivity in an applied electric field due to the current. We also investigated the doping effect of Zn, Ni, and Te on the CDW ground state. Both Zn and Ni doped Cu$_2$Se show a CDW character with increased energy gap and electron-phonon coupling constant, but no notable Peierls transition was observed in Te doped Cu$_2$Se. Similar wave-like I-V curve was also seen in Cu$_{1.98}$Zn$_{0.02}$Se near 40 K. The regular fluctuation in $\it{dc}$ I-V curve was not magnetic field sensitive, but temperature and sample size sensitive.

Carrier localization and electronic phase separation in a doped spin-orbit driven Mott phase in Sr3(Ir1-xRux)2O7

Interest in many strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d-transition metal oxide insulators stems from mapping their electronic structures to a J=1/2 Mott phase. One of the hopes is to establish their Mott parent states and explore these systems' potential of realizing novel electronic states upon carrier doping. However, once doped, little is understood regarding the role of their reduced Coulomb interaction U relative to their strongly correlated 3d-electron cousins. Here we show that, upon hole-doping a candidate J=1/2 Mott insulator, carriers remain localized within a nanoscale phase separated ground state. A percolative metal-insulator transition occurs with interplay between localized and itinerant regions, stabilizing an antiferromagnetic metallic phase beyond the critical region. Our results demonstrate a surprising parallel between doped 5d- and 3d-electron Mott systems and suggest either through the near degeneracy of nearby electronic phases or direct carrier localization that U is essential to the carrier response of this doped spin-orbit Mott insulator.

Power Allocation and Time-Domain Artificial Noise Design for Wiretap OFDM with Discrete Inputs

Optimal power allocation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wiretap channels with Gaussian channel inputs has already been studied in some previous works from an information theoretical viewpoint. However, these results are not sufficient for practical system design. One reason is that discrete channel inputs, such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals, instead of Gaussian channel inputs, are deployed in current practical wireless systems to maintain moderate peak transmission power and receiver complexity. In this paper, we investigate the power allocation and artificial noise design for OFDM wiretap channels with discrete channel inputs. We first prove that the secrecy rate function for discrete channel inputs is nonconcave with respect to the transmission power. To resolve the corresponding nonconvex secrecy rate maximization problem, we develop a low-complexity power allocation algorithm, which yields a duality gap diminishing in the order of O(1/\sqrt{N}), where N is the number of subcarriers of OFDM. We then show that independent frequency-domain artificial noise cannot improve the secrecy rate of single-antenna wiretap channels. Towards this end, we propose a novel time-domain artificial noise design which exploits temporal degrees of freedom provided by the cyclic prefix of OFDM systems {to jam the eavesdropper and boost the secrecy rate even with a single antenna at the transmitter}. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed design schemes.

Distributed Power Allocation for Coordinated Multipoint Transmissions in Distributed Antenna Systems

This paper investigates the distributed power allocation problem for coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmissions in distributed antenna systems (DAS). Traditional duality based optimization techniques cannot be directly applied to this problem, because the non-strict concavity of the CoMP transmission's achievable rate with respect to the transmission power induces that the local power allocation subproblems have non-unique optimum solutions. We propose a distributed power allocation algorithm to resolve this non-strict concavity difficulty. This algorithm only requires local information exchange among neighboring base stations serving the same user, and is thus scalable as the network size grows. The step-size parameters of this algorithm are determined by only local user access relationship (i.e., the number of users served by each antenna), but do not rely on channel coefficients. Therefore, the convergence speed of this algorithm is quite robust to different channel fading coefficients. We rigorously prove that this algorithm converges to an optimum solution of the power allocation problem. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed power allocation algorithm.

Neutron scattering study of correlated phase behavior in Sr2IrO4

Neutron diffraction measurements are presented exploring the magnetic and structural phase behaviors of the candidate J$_{eff}=1/2$ Mott insulating iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Comparisons are drawn between the correlated magnetism in this single layer system and its bilayer analog Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ where both materials exhibit magnetic domains originating from crystallographic twinning and comparable moment sizes. Weakly temperature dependent superlattice peaks violating the reported tetragonal space group of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ are observed supporting the notion of a lower structural symmetry arising from a high temperature lattice distortion, and we use this to argue that moments orient along a unique in-plane axis demonstrating an orthorhombic symmetry in the resulting spin structure. Our results demonstrate that the correlated spin order and structural phase behaviors in both single and bilayer Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ systems are remarkably similar and suggest comparable correlation strengths in each system.

Capacity Region Bounds and Resource Allocation for Two-Way OFDM Relay Channels

In this paper, we consider two-way orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) relay channels, where the direct link between the two terminal nodes is too weak to be used for data transmission. The widely known per-subcarrier decode-and-forward (DF) relay strategy, treats each subcarrier as a separate channel, and performs independent channel coding over each subcarrier. We show that this per-subcarrier DF relay strategy is only a suboptimal DF relay strategy, and present a multi-subcarrier DF relay strategy which utilizes cross-subcarrier channel coding to achieve a larger rate region. We then propose an optimal resource allocation algorithm to characterize the achievable rate region of the multi-subcarrier DF relay strategy. The computational complexity of this algorithm is much smaller than that of standard Lagrangian duality optimization algorithms. We further analyze the asymptotic performance of two-way relay strategies including the above two DF relay strategies and an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay strategy. The analysis shows that the multi-subcarrier DF relay strategy tends to achieve the capacity region of the two-way OFDM relay channels in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, while the AF relay strategy tends to achieve the multiplexing gain region of the two-way OFDM relay channels in the high SNR regime. Numerical results are provided to justify all the analytical results and the efficacy of the proposed optimal resource allocation algorithm.

Vacuum fluctuation force on a rigid Casimir cavity in de Sitter and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime

We investigate the net force on a rigid Casimir cavity generated by vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic field in three cases, de Sitter spacetime, de Sitter spacetime with weak gravitational field and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. In de Sitter spacetime the resulting net force follows the square inverse law but unfortunately it is too weak to be measurable due to the large universe radius. By introducing a weak gravitational field into the de Sitter spacetime, we find the net force now can be splited into two parts, one is the gravitational force due to the induced effective mass between the two plates, the other one is generated by the metric structure of de Sitter spacetime. In order to investigate the vacuum fluctuation force on the rigid cavity under strong gravitational field, we perform the similar analysis in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, results are obtained in three different limits. The most interesting one is when the cavity gets closer to the horizon of a blackhole, square inverse law is recovered and the repulsive force due to negative energy/mass of the cavity now has an observable strength. More important the force changes from being repulsive to attractive when the cavity crosses the event horizon, so that the energy/mass of the cavity switches the sign which suggests the unusual time direction inside the event horizon. %A possible way in verifying whether our universe is in a de Sitter or Minkowski spacetime is discussed.

Optimal Power Allocation for Two-Way Decode-and-Forward OFDM Relay Networks

This paper presents a novel two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay strategy for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) relay networks. This DF relay strategy employs multi-subcarrier joint channel coding to leverage frequency selective fading, and thus can achieve a higher data rate than the conventional per-subcarrier DF relay strategies. We further propose a low-complexity, optimal power allocation strategy to maximize the data rate of the proposed relay strategy. Simulation results suggest that our strategy obtains a substantial gain over the per-subcarrier DF relay strategies, and also outperforms the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay strategy in a wide signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) region.

Optimal Power Allocation for OFDM-Based Wire-Tap Channels with Arbitrarily Distributed Inputs

In this paper, we investigate power allocation that maximizes the secrecy rate of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems under arbitrarily distributed inputs. Considering commonly assumed Gaussian inputs are unrealistic, we focus on secrecy systems with more practical discrete distributed inputs, such as PSK, QAM, etc. While the secrecy rate achieved by Gaussian distributed inputs is concave with respect to the transmit power, we have found and rigorously proved that the secrecy rate is non-concave under any discrete inputs. Hence, traditional convex optimization methods are not applicable any more. To address this non-concave power allocation problem, we propose an efficient algorithm. Its gap from optimality vanishes asymptotically at the rate of $O(1/\sqrt{N})$, and its complexity grows in the order of O(N), where $N$ is the number of sub-carriers. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.
