On the Bimodal Spin Period Distribution of Be/X-ray Pulsars

It has been reported that there are two populations of Be/X-ray pulsars, with the pulse period distribution peaked at $\sim$ 10 s and $\sim$ 200 s, respectively. A possible explanation of this bimodal distribution is related to different accretion modes in Be/X-ray binaries. In this work, we investigate the spin evolution of Be/X-ray pulsars based on the magnetically threaded accretion disk model. Compared with previous works, we take into account several distinct and important factors of Be/X-ray binaries, including the transient accretion behavior and possible change of the accretion disk structure during quiescence. We demonstrate that current Be/X-ray pulsars are close to the spin equilibrium determined by the balance of spin-up during outbursts and spin-down during quiescence, and that the observed bimodal distribution can be well reproduced by the equilibrium spin periods with reasonable input parameters.

Observatory science with eXTP

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Developed by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s.

Can friction of the nova envelope account for the extra angular momentum loss in cataclysmic variables?

It has been shown that the rate of angular momentum loss (AML) in cataclysmic variables (CVs) below the period gap is about 2.47 times that caused by gravitational radiation, suggesting extra AML mechanism besides gravitational radiation. Several potential mechanisms have been proposed but none of them has been verified. In this work we examine whether AML caused by friction between the expanding nova envelope and the donor star can account for the required AML rate. By adopting various expanding velocities of the envelope, we have calculated the evolution of CVs with typical initial parameters. Our results show that this friction interaction unlikely solve the extra AML problem unless the expanding velocities are extremely low. Thus there should be a more efficient AML mechanism that plays a role in the CV evolution.

Monotonicity and rigidity of the W-entropy on RCD(0, N) spaces

By means of a space-time Wasserstein control, we show the monotonicity of the W-entropy functional in time along heat flows on possibly singular metric measure spaces with non-negative Ricci curvature and a finite upper bound of dimension in an appropriate sense. The associated rigidity result on the rate of dissipation of the W-entropy is also proved. These extend known results even on weighted Riemannian manifolds in some respects. In addition, we reveal that some singular spaces will exhibit the rigidity models while only the Euclidean space does in the class of smooth weighted Riemannian manifolds.

Unifying neutron star sub-populations in the supernova fallback accretion model

We employ the supernova fallback disk model to simulate the spin evolution of isolated young neutron stars (NSs). We consider the submergence of the NS magnetic fields during the supercritical accretion stage and its succeeding reemergence. It is shown that the evolution of the spin periods and the magnetic fields in this model is able to account for the relatively weak magnetic fields of central compact objects and the measured braking indices of young pulsars. For a range of initial parameters, evolutionary links can be established among various kinds of NS sub-populations including magnetars, central compact objects and young pulsars. Thus, the diversity of young NSs could be unified in the framework of the supernova fallback accretion model.

On the role of supernova kicks in the formation of Galactic double neutron star systems

In this work we focus on a group of Galactic double neutron star (DNS) systems with long orbital periods of $ \gtrsim 1$ day and low eccentricities of $\lesssim 0.4$. The feature of these orbital parameters is used to constrain the evolutionary processes of progenitor binaries and the supernova (SN) kicks of the second born NSs. Adopting that the mass transfer during primordial binary evolution is highly non-conservative (rotation-dependent), the formation of DNS systems involves a double helium star binary phase, the common envelope (CE) evolution initiates before the first NS formation. During the CE evolution the binary orbital energy is obviously larger when using a helium star rather than a NS to expel the donor envelope, this can help explain the formation of DNS systems with long periods. SN kicks at NS birth can lead to eccentric orbits and even the disruption of binary systems, the low eccentricities require that the DNSs receive a small natal kick at the second collapse. Compared with the overall distribution of orbital parameters for observed DNS binaries, we propose that the second born NSs in most DNS systems are subject to small natal kicks with the Maxwellian dispersion velocity of less than $ 80 \,\rm km\,s^{-1} $, which can provide some constraints on the SN explosion processes. The mass distribution of DNS binaries is also briefly discussed. We suggest that the rotation-dependent mass transfer mode and our results about SN kicks should be applied to massive binary evolution and population synthesis studies.

Are There Pre-Main-Sequence/Black Hole X-ray Binaries?

A large fraction of black hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BHLMXBs) are in short period orbits, which require strong orbital angular momentum loss during the previous evolutionary stage. Ivanova (2006) put forward the possibility that some of the BHLMXBs may harbour pre-main-sequence (MS) donor stars, in order to explain the Li-overabundances in three BHLMXBs. In this work we investigate the evolution of low-mass pre-MS stars in binaries with a BH companion. We calculate the evolution of the spin and orbital periods, the stellar radius and the Roche-lobe radius during the pre-MS stage with the stellar evolution code MESA. We find that, because of the relatively slow rotation of the pre-MS star after the common envelope evolution and the long turnover time in the pre-MS stars, tidal torque is not always able to synchronize the pre-MS star, so the spin periods are generally longer than the orbital periods. Mass transfer can occur only for stars with mass larger than $\sim 1.2M_\odot$, which experience expansion due to nuclear reaction after the Hayashi contraction phase. The effective temperatures and orbital periods of these systems do not match the observations of BHLMXBs. Our results show that the observed BHLMXBs with lithium overabundances are unlikely to host pre-main sequence donor stars.

A possible explanation of the parallel tracks in kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations from low-mass-X-ray binaries

We recalculate the modes of the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) waves in the MHD model (Shi, Zhang & Li 2014) of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs), in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. A method on pointby- point scanning for every parameter of a normal LMXBs is proposed to determine the wave number in a NS-LMXB. The dependence of the twin kHz QPO frequencies on accretion rates ( DOt(M) ) is obtained with the wave number and magnetic field (B?) determined by our method. Based on the MHD model, a new explanation of the parallel tracks, i.e. the slowly varying effective magnetic field leads to the shift of parallel tracks in a source, is presented. In this study, we obtain a simple power-law relation between the kHz QPO frequencies and Dot(M) /B^2 ? in those sources. Finally, we study the dependence of kHz quasi-periodic oscillation frequencies on the spin, mass and radius of a neutron star. We find that the effective magnetic field, the spin, mass and radius of a neutron star lead to the parallel tracks in different sources.

A strange dwarf scenario for the formation of the peculiar double white dwarf binary SDSS J125733.63+542850.5

The Hubble Space Telescope observation of the double white dwarf (WD) binary SDSS J125733.63$+$542850.5 reveal that the massive WD has a surface gravity log$g_1\sim8.7$ (which implies a mass of $M_1\sim1.06~{\rm M_\odot}$) and an effective temperature $T_1\sim13000$ K, while the effective temperature of the low-mass WD ($M_2<0.24$ {\rm M$_\odot$}) is $T_2\sim6400K$. Therefore, the massive and the low-mass WDs have a cooling age $τ_1\sim1$ {\rm Gyr} and $τ_2\geq5$ {\rm Gyr}, respectively. This is in contradiction with traditional binary evolution theory. In this Letter, we propose a strange dwarf scenario to explain the formation of this double WD binary. We assume that the massive WD is a strange dwarf originating from a phase transition in a $\sim1.1$ M$_\odot$ WD, which has experienced accretion and spin-down processes. Its high effective temperature could arise from the heating process during the phase transition. Our simulations suggest that the progenitor of SDSS J125733.63$+$542850.5 can be a binary system consisting of a $0.65~\rm M_{\odot}$ WD and a $1.5~\rm M_{\odot}$ main sequence star in a 1.492 day orbit. Especially, the secondary star (i.e., the progenitor of the low mass WD) is likely to have an ultra-low metallicity of $Z=0.0001$.

A Circumbinary Disk Model for the Rapid Orbital Shrinkage in Black Hole Low-Mass X-ray Binaries

Several black hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BHLMXBs) show very fast orbital shrinkage, which is difficult to understand in the standard picture of the LMXB evolution. Based on the possible detection of a circumbinary (CB) disk in A0620-00 and XTE J1118+480, we investigate the influence of the interaction between a CB disk and the inner binary and calculate the evolution of the binary using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics. We consider two cases for the CB disk formation in which it is fed by mass loss during single outburst or successive outbursts in the LMXB. We show that when taking reasonable values of the initial mass and the dissipating time of the disk, it is possible to explain the fast orbital shrinkage in the BHLMXBs without invoking high mass transfer rate.

Black Hole/Pulsar Binaries in the Galaxy

We have performed population synthesis calculation on the formation of binaries containing a black hole (BH) and a neutron star (NS) in the Galactic disk. Some of important input parameters, especially for the treatment of common envelope evolution, are updated in the calculation. We have discussed the uncertainties from the star formation rate of the Galaxy and the velocity distribution of NS kicks on the birthrate ($ \sim 0.6-13 \rm\, Myr^{-1}$) of BH/NS binaries. From incident BH/NS binaries, by modelling the orbital evolution duo to gravitational wave radiation and the NS evolution as radio pulsars, we obtain the distributions of the observable parameters such as the orbital period, eccentricity and pulse period of the BH/pulsar binaries. We estimate that there may be $\sim 3-80 $ BH/pulsar binaries in the Galactic disk and around 10\% of them could be detected by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope.

An Empirical Correlation of $T_{\rm max}$ - $M_{\rm WD}$ of Dwarf Novae and The Average White Dwarf Mass in Cataclysmic Variables in the Galactic Bulge

The mean white dwarf (WD) mass in the Galactic bulge cataclysmic variables (CVs) was measured by applying the the shock temperature-WD mass correlation of magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) to the Galactic Bulge X-ray Emission (GBXE) spectra. However, the resulting mean WD mass is lower than that of the local CVs. This discrepancy could be explained by the dominating sources in the GBXE are non-mCVs instead of mCVs. In this work, we conduct an thorough investigation on the X-ray spectra of local DNe from \suzaku\ archives, and derive semi-empirical correlations between the shock temperature $T_{\rm max}$, the flux ratio of \fec\ to \feb\ lines, and WD mass for quiescent, non-magnetic CVs. By applying these correlations to the GBXE, we derive the average WD mass of CVs in the Galactic bulge to be $0.81\pm 0.07M_\odot$. This value is consistent with previous optical measurements of WD mass in local CVs.

$W$-entropy, super Perelman Ricci flows and $(K, m)$-Ricci solitons

In this paper, we prove the characterization of the $(K, \infty)$-super Perelman Ricci flows by various functional inequalities and gradient estimate for the heat semigroup generated by the Witten Laplacian on manifolds equipped with time dependent metrics and potentials. As a byproduct, we derive the Hamilton type dimension free Harnack inequality on manifolds with $(K, \infty)$-super Perelman Ricci flows. Based on a new second order differential inequality on the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy for the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian, we introduce a new $W$-entropy quantity and prove its monotonicity for the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(K, \infty)$-condition and on compact manifolds with $(K, \infty)$-super Perelman Ricci flows. Our results characterize the $(K, \infty)$-Ricci solitons and the $(K, \infty)$-Perelman Ricci flows. We also prove a second order differential entropy inequality on $(K, m)$-super Ricci flows, which can be used to characterize the $(K, m)$-Ricci solitons and the $(K, m)$-Ricci flows. Finally, we give a probabilistic interpretation of the $W$-entropy for the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian on manifolds with the $CD(K, m)$-condition.

Disc-corona interaction in the heartbeat state of GRS 1915+105

Timing analysis provides information about the dynamics of matter accreting on to neutron stars and black holes, and hence is crucial for studying the physics of the accretion flow around these objects. It is difficult, however, to associate the different variability components with each of the spectral components of the accretion flow. We apply several new methods to two Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the black hole binary GRS 1915+105 during its heartbeat state to explore the origin of the X-ray variability and the interactions of the accretion-flow components. We offer a promising window into the disc--corona interaction through analysing the formation regions of the disc aperiodic variabilities with different time-scales via comparing the corresponding transition energies of the amplitude-ratio spectra. In a previous paper, we analysed the Fourier power density as a function of energy and frequency to study the origin of the aperiodic variability, and combined that analysis with the phase lag as a function of frequency to derive a picture of the disc--corona interaction in this source. We here, for the first time, investigate the phase lag as a function of energy and frequency, and display some interesting details of the disc--corona interaction. Besides, the results from the shape of amplitude-ratio spectrum and from several other aspects suggest that the quasi-periodic oscillation originates from the corona.

The Dipole Magnetic Field and Spin-down Evolutions of The High Braking Index Pulsar PSR J1640-4631

In this work, we interpreted the high braking index of PSR J1640$-$4631 with a combination of the magneto-dipole radiation and dipole magnetic field decay models. By introducing a mean rotation energy conversion coefficient $\overlineζ$, the ratio of the total high-energy photon energy to the total rotation energy loss in the whole life of the pulsar, and combining the pulsar's high-energy and timing observations with reliable nuclear equation of state, we estimate the pulsar's initial spin period, $P_{0}\sim (17-44)$ ms, corresponding to the moment of inertia $I\sim (0.8-2.1)\times 10^{45}$ g cm$^{2}$. Assuming that PSR J1640$-$4631 has experienced a long-term exponential decay of the dipole magnetic field, we calculate the true age $t_{\rm age}$, the effective magnetic field decay timescale $τ_{D}$, and the initial surface dipole magnetic field at the pole $B_{p}(0)$ of the pulsar to be $(2900-3100)$ yrs, $1.07(2)\times10^{5}$ yrs, and $(1.84-4.20)\times10^{13}$ G, respectively. The measured braking index of $n=3.15(3)$ for PSR J1640$-$4631 is attributed to its long-term dipole magnetic field decay and a low magnetic field decay rate, $dB_{\rm p}/dt\sim -(1.66-3.85)\times10^{8}$ G yr$^{-1}$. Our model can be applied to both the high braking index ($n>3$) and low braking index ($n<3$) pulsars, tested by the future polarization, timing, and high-energy observations of PSR J1640$-$4631.

Evolution of post-Accretion Induced Collapse Binaries: the Effect of Evaporation

Accretion-induced collapse (AIC) is widely accepted to be one of the formation channels for millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Since the MSPs have high spindown luminosities, they can immediately start to evaporate their companion stars after birth. In this paper we present a detailed investigation on the evolution of the post-AIC binaries, taking into account the effect of evaporation both before and during the Roche-lobe overflow process. We discuss the possible influence of the input parameters including the evaporation efficiency, the initial spin period and the initial surface magnetic field of the newborn neutron star. We compare the calculated results with the traditional low-mass X-ray binary evolution, and suggest that they may reproduce at least part of the observed redbacks and black widows in the companion mass - orbital period plane depending on the mechanisms of angular momentum loss associated with evaporation.

$W$-entropy formulas on super Ricci flows and Langevin deformation on Wasserstein space over Riemannian manifolds

In this survey paper, we give an overview of our recent works on the study of the $W$-entropy for the heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on super-Ricci flows and the Langevin deformation on Wasserstein space over Riemannian manifolds. Inspired by Perelman's seminal work on the entropy formula for the Ricci flow, we prove the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on $n$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(K, m)$-condition, and the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation associated with the time dependent Witten Laplacian on $n$-dimensional compact manifolds equipped with a $(K, m)$-super Ricci flow, where $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $m\in [n, \infty]$. Furthermore, we prove an analogue of the $W$-entropy formula for the geodesic flow on the Wasserstein space over Riemannian manifolds. Our result recaptures an important result due to Lott and Villani on the displacement convexity of the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy on Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature. To better understand the similarity between above two $W$-entropy formulas, we introduce the Langevin deformation of geometric flows on the cotangent bundle over the Wasserstein space and prove an extension of the $W$-entropy formula for the Langevin deformation. Finally, we make a discussion on the $W$-entropy for the Ricci flow from the point of view of statistical mechanics and probability theory.

Hamilton differential Harnack inequality and $W$-entropy for Witten Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, we prove the Hamilton differential Harnack inequality for positive solutions to the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(-K, m)$-condition, where $m\in [n, \infty)$ and $K\geq 0$ are two constants. Moreover, we introduce the $W$-entropy and prove the $W$-entropy formula for the fundamental solution of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(-K, m)$-condition and on compact manifolds equipped with $(-K, m)$-super Ricci flows.
