Quantum chaos and regularity in $Φ^4$ theory

We check the eigenvalue spectrum of the $Φ^{4}_{1+1}$ Hamiltonian against Poisson or Wigner behavior predicted from random matrix theory. We discuss random matrix theory as a tool to discriminate the validity of a model Hamiltonian compared to an analytically solvable Hamiltonian or experimental data.

Monte Carlo Hamiltonian: the Linear Potentials

We further study the validity of the Monte Carlo Hamiltonian method. The advantage of the method, in comparison with the standard Monte Carlo Lagrangian approach, is its capability to study the excited states. We consider two quantum mechanical models: a symmetric one $V(x) = |x|/2$; and an asymmetric one $V(x)=\infty$, for $x < 0$ and $V(x)=x$, for $x \ge 0$. The results for the spectrum, wave functions and thermodynamical observables are in agreement with the analytical or Runge-Kutta calculations.

Hybrid mesons from anisotropic lattice QCD with the clover and improved gauge actions

We study hybrid mesons from the clover and improved gauge actions at $β=2.6$ on the anisotropic $12^3\times36$ lattice using our PC cluster. We estimate the mass of $1^{-+}$ light quark hybrid as well as the mass of the charmonium hybrid. The improvement of both quark and gluonic actions, first applied to the hybrid mesons, is shown to be more efficient in reducing the lattice spacing and finite volume errors.

Monte Carlo Hamiltonian: Generalization to Quantum Field Theory

Monte Carlo techniques with importance sampling have been extensively applied to lattice gauge theory in the Lagrangian formulation. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to compute the excited states using the conventional Monte Carlo algorithm. Our recently developed approach: the Monte Carlo Hamiltonian method, has been designed to overcome the difficulties of the conventional approach. In this paper, we extend the method to many body systems and quantum field theory. The Klein-Gordon field theory is used as a testing ground.

Hamiltonian Lattice QCD with Wilson Fermions at Strong Coupling

Hamiltonian lattice QCD with Wilson fermions is investigated systematically by strong-coupling expansion up to the second order. The effective Hamiltonian is diagonalized by Bogoliubov transformation. The vacuum energy, chiral condensate, pseudo-scalar and vector meson masses are calculated. The comparison with the unitary transformation method by Luo and Chen is also made. The method discussed in this paper has potential application to QCD at finite density.

Thermodynamical quantities of lattice full QCD from an efficient method

I extend to QCD an efficient method for lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions. Once the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator and the density of states of pure gluonic configurations at a set of plaquette energies (proportional to the gauge action) are computed, thermodynamical quantities deriving from the partition function can be obtained for arbitrary flavor number, quark masses and wide range of coupling constants, without additional computational cost. Results for the chiral condensate and gauge action are presented on the $10^4$ lattice at flavor number $N_f=0$, 1, 2, 3, 4 and many quark masses and coupling constants. New results in the chiral limit for the gauge action and its correlation with the chiral condensate, which are useful for analyzing the QCD chiral phase structure, are also provided.

QCD at Finite Density

At sufficiently high temperature and density, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts phase transition from the hadronic phase to the quark-gluon plasma phase. Lattice QCD is the most useful tool to investigate this critical phenomenon, which status is briefly reviewed. The usual problem in the Lagrangian formulation at finite density is either an incorrect continuum limit or its complex action and a premature onset of the transition as the chemical potential is raised. We show how the difficulties are overcome in our Hamiltonian approach.

Recent Progress of Lattice QCD in China

Lattice QCD is the most reliable non-perturbative method in quantum field theory. In the last few years, some problems crucial to high energy experiments have been solved. We review some recent work done by the Chinese lattice community.

Hamiltonian lattice QCD at finite chemical potential

At sufficiently high temperature and density, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is expected to undergo a phase transition from the confined phase to the quark-gluon plasma phase. In the Lagrangian lattice formulation the Monte Carlo method works well for QCD at finite temperature, however, it breaks down at finite chemical potential. We develop a Hamiltonian approach to lattice QCD at finite chemical potential and solve it in the case of free quarks and in the strong coupling limit. At zero temperature, we calculate the vacuum energy, chiral condensate, quark number density and its susceptibility, as well as mass of the pseudoscalar, vector mesons and nucleon. We find that the chiral phase transition is of first order, and the critical chemical potential is $μ_C =m_{dyn}^{(0)}$ (dynamical quark mass at $μ=0$). This is consistent with $μ_C \approx M_N^{(0)}/3$ (where $M_N^{(0)}$ is the nucleon mass at $μ=0$).

Monte Carlo Hamiltonian - From Statistical Physics to Quantum Theory

Monte Carlo techniques have been widely employed in statistical physics as well as in quantum theory in the Lagrangian formulation. However, in some areas of application to quantum theories computational progress has been slow. Here we present a recently developed approach: the Monte Carlo Hamiltonian method, designed to overcome the difficulties of the conventional approach.

Quantum Theory with Many Degrees of Freedom from Monte Carlo Hamiltonian

With our recently proposed effective Hamiltonian via Monte Carlo, we are able to compute low energy physics of quantum systems. The advantage is that we can obtain not only the spectrum of ground and excited states, but also wave functions. The previous work has shown the success of this method in (1+1)-dimensional quantum mechanical systems. In this work we apply it to higher dimensional systems.

Improved lattice QCD with quarks: the 2 dimensional case

QCD in two dimensions is investigated using the improved fermionic lattice Hamiltonian proposed by Luo, Chen, Xu, and Jiang. We show that the improved theory leads to a significant reduction of the finite lattice spacing errors. The quark condensate and the mass of lightest quark and anti-quark bound state in the strong coupling phase (different from t'Hooft phase) are computed. We find agreement between our results and the analytical ones in the continuum.

Eigenmodes of the Dirac Operator and Chiral Properties of QCD with Sea Quarks

I describe a mechanism to understand the relation between chiral-symmetry breaking and eigenmodes of the Dirac operator in lattice QCD with Kogut-Susskind sea quarks. It can be shown that if chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, the eigenvalues $λ_i$ should behave as $z(i)/V$ for large volume $V$, where $z(i)$ is the i-th zero of the Bessel function. With neither chiral nor $λ$ extrapolation, one can precisely calculate the chiral condensate using only a small set of eigenvalues. Therefore, it is economical and free of systematic uncertainties. I present the first QCD data to support this mechanism and encourage the lattice community to test and use it.

A New Regularization Method in 3-Dimensional Momentum Space

We propose a new method to calculate the 4-dimensional divergent integrals. By calculating the one loop integral as an example, the regularization of the integrals in 3-dimension momentum space are given in details. We find that the new method gives the same results as the traditional dimensional regularization method gives, but the new method has the advantage that it gives the real and the imaginary part separately.

Improved Lattice Gauge Field Hamiltonian

Lepage's improvement scheme is a recent major progress in lattice $QCD$, allowing to obtain continuum physics on very coarse lattices. Here we discuss improvement in the Hamiltonian formulation, and we derive an improved Hamiltonian from a lattice Lagrangian free of $O(a^2)$ errors. We do this by the transfer matrix method, but we also show that the alternative via Legendre transformation gives identical results. We consider classical improvement, tadpole improvement and also the structure of L{ü}scher-Weisz improvement. The resulting color-electric energy is an infinite series, which is expected to be rapidly convergent. For the purpose of practical calculations, we construct a simpler improved Hamiltonian, which includes only nearest-neighbor interactions.
