Parker Solar Probe Observations of Preferential Heating of Protons over Alpha Particles near Turbulent Coherent Structures

Solar wind alpha particles exhibit preferential heating and acceleration relative to protons; however, their behavior in the vicinity of turbulent coherent structures remains less understood. We report the first evidence of localized alpha particle and proton heating within coherent structures identified using the Partial Variance of Increments (PVI) method, based on Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations. Our results show that high-PVI events are associated with significant, species-dependent temperature enhancements: protons undergo a relative larger temperature increase than alpha particles. This preferential proton heating produces a localized decrease in the alpha-to-proton temperature ratio, indicating that the plasma is driven toward thermal equilibration between species. The heating is also anisotropic, being dominated by enhancements in the perpendicular temperature. These temperature-signatures coincide with a pronounced reduction in the normalized alpha-proton differential flow speed and a localized minimum in the Coulomb collision age, suggesting that the relaxation is affected primarily by collisionless kinetic effects. These findings provide new insight into the intermittent energy conversion and ion thermodynamics in the solar wind.

The Radial Distribution of Ion-scale Waves in the Inner Heliosphere

Determining the mechanism responsible for the plasma heating and particle acceleration is a fundamental problem in the study of the heliosphere. Due to efficient wave-particle interactions of ion-scale waves with charged particles, these waves are widely believed to be a major contributor to ion energization, and their contribution considerably depends on the wave occurrence rate. By analyzing the radial distribution of quasi-monochromatic ion-scale waves observed by the Parker Solar Probe, this work shows that the wave occurrence rate is significantly enhanced in the near-Sun solar wind, specifically 21%$-$29% below 0.3 au, in comparison to 6%$-$14% beyond 0.3 au. The radial decrease of the wave occurrence rate is not only induced by the sampling effect of a single spacecraft detection, but also by the physics relating to the wave excitation, such as the enhanced ion beam instability in the near-Sun solar wind. This work also shows that the wave normal angle $θ$, the absolute value of ellipticity $ε$, the wave frequency $f$ normalized by the proton cyclotron frequency $f_{\mathrm{cp}}$, and the wave amplitude $δB$ normalized by the local background magnetic field $B_0$ slightly vary with the radial distance. The median values of $θ$, $|ε|$, $f$, and $δB$ are about $9^\circ$, $0.73$, $3f_{\mathrm{cp}}$, and $0.01B_0$, respectively. Furthermore, this study proposes that the wave mode nature of the observed left-handed and right-handed polarized waves corresponds to the Alfvén ion cyclotron mode wave and the fast-magnetosonic whistler mode wave, respectively.

Magnetospheric Multiscale Observation of Kinetic Signatures in the Alfvén Vortex

Alfvén vortex is a multi-scale nonlinear structure which contributes to intermittency of turbulence. Despite previous explorations mostly on the spatial properties of the Alfvén vortex (i.e., scale, orientation, and motion), the plasma characteristics within the Alfvén vortex are unknown. Moreover, the connection between the plasma energization and the Alfvén vortex still remains unclear. Based on high resolution in-situ measurement from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, we report for the first time, distinctive plasma features within an Alfvén vortex. This Alfvén vortex is identified to be two-dimensional ($k_{\bot} \gg k_{\|}$) quasi-monopole with a radius of ~10 proton gyroscales. Its magnetic fluctuations $δB_{\bot}$ are anti correlated with velocity fluctuations $δV_{\bot}$, thus the parallel current density $j_{\|}$ and flow vorticity $ω_{\|}$ are anti-aligned. In different part of the vortex (i.e., edge, middle, center), the ion and electron temperatures are found to be quite different and they behave in the reverse trend: the ion temperature variations are correlated with $j_{\|}$, while the electron temperature variations are correlated with $ω_{\|}$. Furthermore, the temperature anisotropies, together with the non-Maxwellian kinetic effects, exhibit strong enhancement at peaks of $|ω_{\|}| (|j_{\|}|)$ within the vortex. Comparison between observations and numerical/theoretical results are made. In addition, the energy-conversion channels and the compressibility associated with the Alfvén vortex are discussed. These results may help to understand the link between coherent vortex structures and the kinetic processes, which determines how turbulence energy dissipate in the weakly-collisional space plasmas.
