Residual Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Domain-Wall Fermions

We study the effective quark mass induced by the finite separation of the domain walls in the domain-wall formulation of chiral fermion as the function of the size of the fifth dimension ($L_s$), the gauge coupling $β$ and the physical volume $V$. We measure the mass by calculating the small eigenvalues of the hermitian domain-wall Dirac operator ($H_{\rm DWF}(m_0))$ in the topologically-nontrivial quenched SU(3) gauge configurations. We find that the induced quark mass is nearly independent of the physical volume, decays exponentially as a function of $L_s$, and has a strong dependence on the size of quantum fluctuations controlled by $β$. The effect of the choice of the lattice gluon action is also studied.

One-Loop Factorization of the Nucleon g_2-Structure Function in the Non-Singlet Case

We consider the one-loop factorization of the simplest twist-three process: inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of longitudinally-polarized leptons on a transversely-polarized nucleon target. By studying the Compton amplitudes for certain quark and gluon states at one loop, we find the coefficient functions for the non-singlet twist-three distributions in the factorization formula of g_2(x_B,Q^2). The result marks the first step towards a next-to-leading order (NLO) formalism for this transverse-spin-dependent structure function of the nucleon.

Domain-Wall Induced Quark Masses in Topologically-Nontrivial Background

In the domain-wall formulation of chiral fermion, the finite separation between domain-walls ($L_s$) induces an effective quark mass ($m_{\rm eff}$) which complicates the chiral limit. In this work, we study the size of the effective mass as the function of $L_s$ and the domain-wall height $m_0$ by calculating the smallest eigenvalue of the hermitian domain-wall Dirac operator in the topologically-nontrivial background fields. We find that, just like in the free case, $m_{\rm eff}$ decreases exponentially in $L_s$ with a rate depending on $m_0$. However, quantum fluctuations amplify the wall effects significantly. Our numerical result is consistent with a previous study of the effective mass from the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation.

Generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov Sum Rule at Order {\cal O}(p^4) in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We calculate the forward spin-dependent photon-nucleon Compton amplitudes $S_1$ and $S_2$ as functions of photon energy $ν$ and mass $Q^2$ at the next-to-leading (${\cal O}(p^4)$) order in chiral perturbation theory, from which we extract the contribution to a generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule at low $Q^2$. The result indicates a much rapid $Q^2$ variation of the sum rule than a simple dimensional analysis would yield.

Does the Gluon Spin Contribute in A Gauge Invariant Way to Nucleon Spin?

Although the matrix element of the gluon spin operator in nucleon helicity states is known to be independent of some special choices of gauge, we show that it is not invariant under a general gauge transformation. We find that there exists a simple means of obtaining the matrix element in a different choice of gauge from a calculation made in one specific gauge. Similar conclusions hold for other manifestly gauge-dependent operators present in the QCD angular momentum operator.

Generalized Sum Rules for Spin-Dependent Structure Functions of the Nucleon

The Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov and Bjorken sum rules are special examples of dispersive sum rules for the spin-dependent structure function G_1(ν, Q^2) at Q^2=0 and \infty. We generalize these sum rules through studying the virtual-photon Compton amplitudes S_1(ν, Q^2) and S_2(ν,Q^2). At small Q^2, we calculate the Compton amplitudes at leading-order in chiral perturbation theory; the resulting sum rules can be tested by data soon available from Jefferson Lab. For Q^2>>Λ_{QCD}^2, the standard twist-expansion for the Compton amplitudes leads to the well-known deep-inelastic sum rules. Although the situation is still relatively unclear in a small intermediate-Q^2 window, we argue that chiral perturbation theory and the twist-expansion alone already provide strong constraints on the Q^2-evolution of the G_1(ν,Q^2) sum rule from Q^2=0 to Q^2=\infty.

Simplification of Higher-Twist Evolution in the Large N_c Limit: Why and Why Not

Working in the light-cone gauge, we find a simple procedure to calculate the autonomous one-loop Q^2 evolution of the twist-three part of the nucleon g_T(x, Q^2) structure function in the large-N_c limit. Our approach allows us to investigate the possibility of a similar large-N_c simplification for other higher-twist evolutions. In particular, we show that it does not occur for the twist-four part of the f_4(x, Q^2), g_3(x, Q^2) and h_3(x, Q^2) distributions. We also argue that the simplification of the twist-three evolution does not persist beyond one loop.

Implications of Color Gauge Symmetry For Nucleon Spin Structure

We study the chromodynamical gauge symmetry in relation to the internal spin structure of the nucleon. We show that 1) even in the helicity eigenstates the gauge-dependent spin and orbital angular momentum operators do not have gauge-independent matrix element; 2) the evolution equations for the gluon spin take very different forms in the Feynman and axial gauges, but yield the same leading behavior in the asymptotic limit; 3) the complete evolution of the gauge-dependent orbital angular momenta appears intractable in the light-cone gauge. We define a new gluon orbital angular momentum distribution $L_g(x)$ which {\it is} an experimental observable and has a simple scale evolution. However, its physical interpretation makes sense only in the light-cone gauge just like the gluon helicity distribution $Δg(x)$y.

Quark Orbital-Angular-Momentum Distribution in the Nucleon

We introduce gauge-invariant quark and gluon angular momentum distributions after making a generalization of the angular momentum density operators. From the quark angular momentum distribution, we define the gauge-invariant and leading-twist quark {\it orbital} angular momentum distribution $L_q(x)$. The latter can be extracted from data on the polarized and unpolarized quark distributions and the off-forward distribution $E(x)$ in the forward limit. We comment upon the evolution equations obeyed by this as well as other orbital distributions considered in the literature.

Off-Forward Parton Distributions

Recently, there have been some interesting developments involving off-forward parton distributions of the nucleon, deeply virtual Compton scattering, and hard diffractive vector-meson production. These developments are triggered by the realization that the off-forward distributions contain information about the internal spin structure of the nucleon and that diffractive electroproduction of vector mesons depends on these unconventional distributions. This paper gives a brief overview of the recent developments.

A Modern Anatomy of Electron Mass

Motivated by the need to understand hadron masses, we reexamine an old problem in QED - the composition of the electron mass - in a modern perspective. We find that in the unrenormalized QED, the vacuum subtraction plays an important role in understanding various sources of the electron mass. The same issue is also discussed in the modified minimal subtraction scheme with an emphasis on the scale and scheme dependence in the analysis.

Helicity-Flip Off-Foward Parton Distributions of the Nucleon

We identify quark and gluon helicity-flip distributions defined between nucleon states of unequal momenta. The evolution of these distributions with change of renormalization scale is calculated in the leading-logarithmic approximation. The helicity-flip gluon distributions do not mix with any quark distribution and are thus a unique signature of gluons in the nucleon. Their contribution to the generalized virtual Compton process is obtained both in the form of a factorization theorem and an operator product expansion. In deeply virtual Compton scattering, they can be probed through distinct angular dependence of the cross section.

One-Loop Corrections and All Order Factorization In Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

We calculate the one-loop corrections to a general off-forward deeply-virtual Compton process at leading twist for both parton helicity-dependent and independent cases. We show that the infrared divergences can be factorized entirely into off-forward parton distributions, even when one of the two photons is onshell. We argue that this property persists to all orders in perturbation theory. We obtain the next-to-leading order Wilson coefficients for the general leading-twist expansion of the product of two electromagnetic currents in the \overline{\rm MS} scheme.

Lorentz Symmetry and the Internal Structure of the Nucleon

To investigate the internal structure of the nucleon, it is useful to introduce quantities that do not transform properly under Lorentz symmetry, such as the four-momentum of the quarks in the nucleon, the amount of the nucleon spin contributed by quark spin, etc. In this paper, we discuss to what extent these quantities do provide Lorentz-invariant descriptions of the nucleon structure.

One-Loop QCD Corrections to Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering: The Parton Helicity-Independent Case

We show that the one-loop QCD correction to deeply-virtual Compton scattering can be factorized into the finite perturbative contributions and the collinearly-divergent terms, which correspond to the matrix elements of the off-forward parton distributions. As a by-product, we obtain the next-to-leading order coefficient functions in the generalized operator product expansion of two vector currents.

Purely-Nonperturbative Composite Operators and Parton Distributions

A class of purely-nonperturbative (PNP) composite operators is defined in Quantum Chromodynamics, which is perturbative scheme and scale independent and are useful to describe the internal structure of a strong interacting system. The operator product expansion in terms of the new operators cleanly separates the perturbative and nonperturbative physics without introducing any factorization scale. A number of PNP observables of the nucleon is briefly discussed including the PNP parton distributions. In particular, the fraction of the nucleon momentum carried by the purely-nonperturbative gluons is found to be around 16%.
