An Operator Splitting Scheme for Distributed Optimal Load-side Frequency Control with Nonsmooth Cost Functions

The increasing penetration of renewable energy resources and utilization of energy storage systems pose new challenges in maintaining power system's stability. Specifically, the cost function of regulation no longer remains smooth, which complicates the task of ensuring nominal frequency and power balance, particularly in a distributed manner. This paper proposes a distributed proximal primal-dual (DPPD) algorithm, based on a modified primal-dual dynamics equipped with operator splitting technique, to address this nonsmooth frequency regulation problem on load side. By Lyapunov stability and invariance theory, we prove that DPPD algorithm achieves global asymptotic convergence to the optimal solution that minimizes the nonsmooth regulation cost, while restoring the frequency under constraints such as capacity limits of load and power flow. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of DPPD algorithm by simulations on the IEEE 39-bus system.

Forces inside a strongly-coupled scalar nucleon

We investigate the gravitational form factors of a strongly coupled scalar theory that mimic the interaction between the nucleon and the pion. The non-perturbative calculation is based on the light-front Hamiltonian formalism. We renormalize the energy-momentum tensor with a Fock sector dependent scheme. We also systematically analyze the Lorentz structure of the energy-momentum tensor and identify the suitable hadron matrix elements to extract the form factors, avoiding the contamination of spurious contributions. We verify that the extracted form factors obey momentum conservation as well as the mechanical stability condition. From the gravitational form factors, we compute the energy and pressure distributions of the system. Furthermore, we show that utilizing the Hamiltonian eigenvalue equation, the off-diagonal Fock sector contributions from the interaction term can be converted to diagonal Fock sector contributions, yielding a systematic non-perturbative light-front wave function representation of the energies and forces inside the system.

A Lightweight Sensor Scheduler Based on AoI Function for Remote State Estimation over Lossy Wireless Channels

This paper investigates the problem of sensor scheduling for remotely estimating the states of heterogeneous dynamical systems over resource-limited and lossy wireless channels. Considering the low time complexity and high versatility requirements of schedulers deployed on the transport layer, we propose a lightweight scheduler based on an Age of Information (AoI) function built with the tight scalar upper bound of the remote estimation error. We show that the proposed scheduler is indexable and sub-optimal. We derive an upper and a lower bound of the proposed scheduler and give stability conditions for estimation error. Numerical simulations demonstrate that, compared to existing policies, the proposed scheduler achieves estimation performance very close to the optimal at a much lower computation time.

Diffie-Hellman in the Air: A Link Layer Approach for In-Band Wireless Pairing

Key establishment is one fundamental issue in wireless security. The widely used Diffie-Hellman key exchange is vulnerable to the man-in-the-middle attack. This paper presents a novel in-band solution for defending the man-in-the-middle attack during the key establishment process for wireless devices. Our solution is based on the insight that an attacker inevitably affects the link layer behavior of the wireless channel, and this behavior change introduced by the attacker can be detected by the legitimate users. Specifically, we propose a key exchange protocol and its corresponding channel access mechanism for the protocol message transmission, in which the Diffie-Hellman parameter is transmitted multiple times in a row without being interrupted by other data transmission on the same wireless channel. The proposed key exchange protocol forces the MITM attacker to cause multiple packet collisions consecutively at the receiver side, which can then be monitored by the proposed detection algorithm. The performance of the proposed solution is validated through both theoretical analysis and simulation: the proposed solution is secure against the MITM attack and can achieve an arbitrarily low false positive ratio. This proposed link layer solution works completely in-band, and can be easily implemented on off-the-shelf wireless devices without the requirement of any special hardware.

Energy Efficient Massive MIMO through Distributed Precoder Design

This paper presents an energy-efficient downlink precoding scheme with the objective of maximizing system energy efficiency in a multi-cell massive MIMO system. The proposed precoding design jointly considers the issues of power control, interference management, antenna switching and user throughput in a cluster of base stations (BS). We demonstrate that the precoding design can be formulated into a general sparsity-inducing non-convex problem, which is NP-hard. We thus apply a smooth approximation of zero-norm in the antenna power management to enable the application of the gradient-based algorithms. The non-convexity of the problem may also cause slow convergence or even divergence if some classical gradient algorithms are directly applied. We thus develop an efficient alternative algorithm combining features from augmented multiplier (AM) and quadratic programming (QP) to guarantee the convergence. We theoretically prove the convergence conditions for our algorithm both locally and globally under realistic assumptions. Our proposed algorithms further facilitate a distributed implementation that reduces backhaul overhead by offloading data-intensive steps to local computation at each BS. Numerical results confirm that our methods indeed achieve higher energy efficiency with superior convergence rate, compared to some well-known existing methods.

Joint Optimization of Scheduling and Power Control in Wireless Networks: Multi-Dimensional Modeling and Decomposition

The energy efficiency of future networks is becoming a significant and urgent issue, calling for greener network designs. At the same time, rapid development of wireless networks shows a trend of increasing complexity in network structure and resource space, leading to that optimizing the energy efficiency of such networks requires a joint solution over multi-dimensional resource space. However, the coupled resource dimensions and growing problem scales bring great challenges in obtaining the optimal solutions. In this paper, we develop a multi-dimensional network model on the basis of tuple-links associated with transmission patterns (TPs) and formulate the optimization problem as a TP based scheduling problem which jointly solves transmission scheduling, routing, power control, radio and channel assignment. In order to tackle the complexity issues raised from coupled resource dimensions, we propose a novel algorithm that decomposes the coupling scheduling and power control by exploiting the delay column generation technique to recursively solve a master problem for scheduling and a sub-problem for power allocation. Further, we theoretically prove that the performance gap between the proposed algorithm and the optimum is upper bounded by that for the sub-problem solution, where the latter is derived by solving a relaxed version of the sub-problem. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the multi-dimensional framework and the benefit of the proposed joint optimization in improving network energy efficiency.

Secure Key Establishment for Device-to-Device Communications

With the rapid growth of smartphone and tablet users, Device-to-Device (D2D) communications have become an attractive solution for enhancing the performance of traditional cellular networks. However, relevant security issues involved in D2D communications have not been addressed yet. In this paper, we investigate the security requirements and challenges for D2D communications, and present a secure and efficient key agreement protocol, which enables two mobile devices to establish a shared secret key for D2D communications without prior knowledge. Our approach is based on the Diffie-Hellman key agreement protocol and commitment schemes. Compared to previous work, our proposed protocol introduces less communication and computation overhead. We present the design details and security analysis of the proposed protocol. We also integrate our proposed protocol into the existing Wi-Fi Direct protocol, and implement it using Android smartphones.

Energy Efficient Spectrum Sensing for State Estimation over A Wireless Channel

The performance of remote estimation over wireless channel is strongly affected by sensor data losses due to interference. Although the impact of interference can be alleviated by performing spectrum sensing and then transmitting only when the channel is clear, the introduction of spectrum sensing also incurs extra energy expenditure. In this paper, we investigate the problem of energy efficient spectrum sensing for state estimation of a general linear dynamic system, and formulate an optimization problem which minimizes the total sensor energy consumption while guaranteeing a desired level of estimation performance. The optimal solution is evaluated through both analytical and simulation results.

Ghost-in-the-Wireless: Energy Depletion Attack on ZigBee

ZigBee has been recently drawing a lot of attention as a promising solution for ubiquitous computing. The ZigBee devices are normally resource-limited, making the network susceptible to a variety of security threats. This paper presents a severe attack on ZigBee networks termed as ghost, which leverages the underlying vulnerabilities of the IEEE 802.15.4 security suites to deplete the energy of the devices. We manifest that the impact of ghost is severe as it can reduce the lifetime of devices from years to days and facilitate a variety of threats including denial of service and replay attacks. We highlight that merely deploying a standard suite of advanced security techniques does not necessarily guarantee improved security, but instead might be leveraged by adversaries to cause severe disruption in the network. We propose several recommendations on how to localize and withstand the ghost and other related attacks in ZigBee networks. Extensive simulations are provided to show the impact of the ghost and the performance of the proposed recommendations. Moreover, physical experiments also have been conducted and the observations confirm the severity of the impact by the ghost attack. We believe that the presented work will aid the researchers to improve the security of ZigBee further.

On Optimizing Energy Efficiency in Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Networks

Multi-radio multi-channel (MR-MC) networks contribute significant enhancement in the network throughput by exploiting multiple radio interfaces and non-overlapping channels. While throughput optimization is one of the main targets in allocating resource in MR-MC networks, recently, the network energy efficiency is becoming a more and more important concern. Although turning on more radios and exploiting more channels for communication is always beneficial to network capacity, they may not be necessarily desirable from an energy efficiency perspective. The relationship between these two often conflicting objectives has not been well-studied in many existing works. In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimizing energy efficiency under full capacity operation in MR-MC networks and analyze the optimal choices of numbers of radios and channels. We provide detailed problem formulation and solution procedures. In particular, for homogeneous commodity networks, we derive a theoretical upper bound of the optimal energy efficiency and analyze the conditions under which such optimality can be achieved. Numerical results demonstrate that the achieved optimal energy efficiency is close to the theoretical upper bound.

Real-Time Misbehavior Detection in IEEE 802.11e Based WLANs

The Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) specification in the IEEE 802.11e standard supports heterogeneous backoff parameters and arbitration inter-frame space (AIFS), which makes a selfish node easy to manipulate these parameters and misbehave. In this case, the network-wide fairness cannot be achieved any longer. Many existing misbehavior detectors, primarily designed for legacy IEEE 802.11 networks, become inapplicable in such a heterogeneous network configuration. In this paper, we propose a novel real-time hybrid-share (HS) misbehavior detector for IEEE 802.11e based wireless local area networks (WLANs). The detector keeps updating its state based on every successful transmission and makes detection decisions by comparing its state with a threshold. We develop mathematical analysis of the detector performance in terms of both false positive rate and average detection rate. Numerical results show that the proposed detector can effectively detect both contention window based and AIFS based misbehavior with only a short detection window.

Design of A Scalable Hybrid MAC Protocol for Heterogeneous M2M Networks

A robust and resilient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is crucial for numerous machine-type devices to concurrently access the channel in a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) network. Simplex (reservation or contention based) MAC protocols are studied in most literatures which may not be able to provide a scalable solution for M2M networks with large number of heterogeneous devices. In this paper, a scalable hybrid MAC protocol, which consists of a contention period and a transmission period, is designed for heterogeneous M2M networks. In this protocol, different devices with pre-set priorities (hierarchical contending probabilities) firstly contend the transmission opportunities following the convention based $p$-persistent CSMA mechanism. Only the successful devices will be assigned a time slot for transmission following the reservation based TDMA mechanism. If the devices failed in contention at previous frame, to ensure the fairness among all devices, their contending priorities will be raised by increasing their contending probabilities at the next frame. To balance the tradeoff between the contention and transmission period in each frame, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the channel utility by finding the key design parameters: the contention duration, initial contending probability and the incremental indicator. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Hybrid MAC protocol.

A Scalable Hybrid MAC Protocol for Massive M2M Networks

In Machine to Machine (M2M) networks, a robust Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is crucial to enable numerous machine-type devices to concurrently access the channel. Most literatures focus on developing simplex (reservation or contention based)MAC protocols which cannot provide a scalable solution for M2M networks with large number of devices. In this paper, a frame-based Hybrid MAC scheme, which consists of a contention period and a transmission period, is proposed for M2M networks. In the proposed scheme, the devices firstly contend the transmission opportunities during the contention period, only the successful devices will be assigned a time slot for transmission during the transmission period. To balance the tradeoff between the contention and transmission period in each frame, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the system throughput by finding the optimal contending probability during contention period and optimal number of devices that can transmit during transmission period. A practical hybrid MAC protocol is designed to implement the proposed scheme. The analytical and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Hybrid MAC protocol.
