New curvature flows in complex geometry

This is a survey of some of the recent developments on the geometric and analytic aspects of the Anomaly flow. It is a flow of $(2,2)$-forms on a $3$-fold which was originally motivated by string theory and the need to preserve the conformally balanced property of a Hermitian metric in the absence of a $\partial\bar\partial$-Lemma. It has revealed itself since to be a remarkable higher order extension of the Ricci flow. It has also led to several other curvature flows which may be interesting from the point of view of both non-Kähler geometry and the theory of non-linear partial differential equations.

A flow of conformally balanced metrics with Kähler fixed points

While the Anomaly flow was originally motivated by string theory, its zero slope case is potentially of considerable interest in non-Kahler geometry, as it is a flow of conformally balanced metrics whose stationary points are precisely Kahler metrics. We establish its convergence on Kahler manifolds for suitable initial data. We also discuss its relation to some current problems in complex geometry.

Regularity of Degenerate Hessian Equation

We show a second order a priori estimate for solutions to the complex $k$-Hessian equation on a compact Kähler manifold provided the $(k$-$1)$-st root of the right hand side is $\mathcal C^{1,1}$. This improves an estimate of Hou-Ma-Wu. An example is provided to show that the exponent is sharp.

The Anomaly flow and the Fu-Yau equation

The Anomaly flow is shown to converge on toric fibrations with the Fu-Yau ansatz, for both positive and negative values of the slope parameter $α'$. This implies both results of Fu and Yau on the existence of solutions for Hull-Strominger systems, which they proved using different methods depending on the sign of $α'$. It is also the first case where the Anomaly flow can even be shown to exist for all time. This is in itself remarkable from the point of view of the theory of fully nonlinear partial differential equations, as the elliptic terms in the flow are not concave.

Anomaly flows

The Anomaly flow is a flow which implements the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism originating from superstring theory, while preserving the conformally balanced condition of Hermitian metrics. There are several versions of the flow, depending on whether the gauge field also varies, or is assumed known. A distinctive feature of Anomaly flows is that, in $m$ dimensions, the flow of the Hermitian metric has to be inferred from the flow of its $(m-1)$-th power $ω^{m-1}$. We show how this can be done explicitly, and we work out the corresponding flows for the torsion and the curvature tensors. The results are applied to produce criteria for the long-time existence of the flow, in the simplest case of zero slope parameter.

Asynchronous Bidirectional Decoding for Neural Machine Translation

The dominant neural machine translation (NMT) models apply unified attentional encoder-decoder neural networks for translation. Traditionally, the NMT decoders adopt recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to perform translation in a left-toright manner, leaving the target-side contexts generated from right to left unexploited during translation. In this paper, we equip the conventional attentional encoder-decoder NMT framework with a backward decoder, in order to explore bidirectional decoding for NMT. Attending to the hidden state sequence produced by the encoder, our backward decoder first learns to generate the target-side hidden state sequence from right to left. Then, the forward decoder performs translation in the forward direction, while in each translation prediction timestep, it simultaneously applies two attention models to consider the source-side and reverse target-side hidden states, respectively. With this new architecture, our model is able to fully exploit source- and target-side contexts to improve translation quality altogether. Experimental results on NIST Chinese-English and WMT English-German translation tasks demonstrate that our model achieves substantial improvements over the conventional NMT by 3.14 and 1.38 BLEU points, respectively. Fu-Yau Hessian Equations

We solve the Fu-Yau equation for arbitrary dimension and arbitrary slope $α'$. Actually we obtain at the same time a solution of the open case $α'>0$, an improved solution of the known case $α'<0$, and solutions for a family of Hessian equations which includes the Fu-Yau equation as a special case. The method is based on the introduction of a more stringent ellipticity condition than the usual $Γ_k$ admissible cone condition, and which can be shown to be preserved by precise estimates with scale.

The Anomaly flow on unimodular Lie groups

The Hull-Strominger system for supersymmetric vacua of the heterotic string allows general unitary Hermitian connections with torsion and not just the Chern unitary connection. Solutions on unimodular Lie groups exploiting this flexibility were found by T. Fei and S.T. Yau. The Anomaly flow is a flow whose stationary points are precisely the solutions of the Hull-Strominger system. Here we examine its long-time behavior on unimodular Lie groups with general unitary Hermitian connections. We find a diverse and intricate behavior, which depends very much on the Lie group and the initial data.

On estimates for the Fu-Yau generalization of a Strominger system

We study an equation proposed by Fu and Yau as a natural $n$-dimensional generalization of a Strominger system that they solved in dimension $2$. It is a complex Hessian equation with right hand side depending on gradients. Building on the methods of Fu and Yau, we obtain $C^0$, $C^2$ and $C^{2,α}$ a priori estimates. We also identify difficulties in extending the Fu-Yau arguments for non-degeneracy from dimension $2$ to higher dimensions.

Geometric flows and Strominger systems

A geometric flow on $(2,2)$-forms is introduced which preserves the balanced condition of metrics, and whose stationary points satisfy the anomaly equation in Strominger systems. The existence of solutions for a short time is established, using Hamilton's version of the Nash-Moser implicit function theorem.

The Fu-Yau equation with negative slope parameter

The Fu-Yau equation is an equation introduced by J. Fu and S.T. Yau as a generalization to arbitrary dimensions of an ansatz for the Strominger system. As in the Strominger system, it depends on a slope parameter $α'$. The equation was solved in dimension $2$ by Fu and Yau in two successive papers for $α'>0$, and for $α'<0$. In the present paper, we solve the Fu-Yau equation in arbitrary dimension for $α'<0$. To our knowledge, these are the first non-trivial solutions of the Fu-Yau equation in any dimension strictly greater than $2$.

Minkowski formulae and Alexandrov theorems in spacetime

The classical Minkowski formula is extended to spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in spacetimes which admit "hidden symmetry" from conformal Killing-Yano two-forms. As an application, we obtain an Alexandrov type theorem for spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in a static spherically symmetric spacetime: a codimension-two submanifold with constant normalized null expansion (null mean curvature) must lie in a shear-free (umbilical) null hypersurface. These results are generalized for higher order curvature invariants. In particular, the notion of mixed higher order mean curvature is introduced to highlight the special null geometry of the submanifold. Finally, Alexandrov type theorems are established for spacelike submanifolds with constant mixed higher order mean curvature, which are generalizations of hypersurfaces of constant Weingarten curvature in the Euclidean space.

Measure Estimates, Harnack Inequalities and Ricci Lower Bound

On a Riemannian metric-measure space, we establish an Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci type measure estimate connecting Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature lower bound, modified Laplacian and the measure of certain special sets. We apply this estimate to prove Harnack inequalities for the modified Laplacian operator and fully non-linear operators. These inequalities seem not available in the literature; And our proof, solely based on the ABP estimate, does not involve any Sobolev inequalities nor gradient estimate. We also propose a question regarding the characterization of Ricci lower bound by the Harnack inequality.
