A diffusive wetting model for water entry/exit based on the weakly-compressible SPH method

This paper proposes a diffusive wetting model for the weakly-compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method to simulate individual water entry/exit as well as the complete process from water entry to exit. The model is composed of a physically consistent diffusive wetting equation to describe the wetting evolution at the fluid-solid interface, a wetting-coupled identification approach to determine the type of fluid particles by taking into account the wetting degree of the contacted solid, and a numerical regularization on the fluid particles at fully wetted fluid-solid interface. The accuracy, efficiency, and versatility of the present model are validated through qualitative and quantitative comparisons with experiments, including the 3-D water entry of a sphere, the 2-D water entry/exit of a cylinder, and the complete process from water entry to exit of a 2-D cylinder.

Essentially non-hourglass and non-tensile-instability SPH elastic dynamics

Since the tension instability was discovered in updated Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ULSPH) at the end of the 20th century, researchers have made considerable efforts to suppress its occurrence. However, up to the present day, this problem has not been fundamentally resolved. In this paper, the concept of hourglass modes is firstly introduced into ULSPH, and the inherent causes of tension instability in elastic dynamics are clarified based on this brand-new perspective. Specifically, we present an essentially non-hourglass formulation by decomposing the shear acceleration with the Laplacian operator, and a comprehensive set of challenging benchmark cases for elastic dynamics is used to showcase that our method can completely eliminate tensile instability by resolving hourglass modes. The present results reveal the true origin of tension instability and challenge the traditional understanding of its sources, i.e., hourglass modes are the real culprit behind inducing this instability in tension zones rather that the tension itself. Furthermore, a time integration scheme known as dual-criteria time stepping is adopted into the simulation of solids for the first time, to significantly enhance computational efficiency.

An explicit multi-time stepping algorithm for multi-time scale coupling problems in SPH

Simulating physical problems involving multi-time scale coupling is challenging due to the need of solving these multi-time scale processes simultaneously. In response to this challenge, this paper proposed an explicit multi-time step algorithm coupled with a solid dynamic relaxation scheme. The explicit scheme simplifies the equation system in contrast to the implicit scheme, while the multi-time step algorithm allows the equations of different physical processes to be solved under different time step sizes. Furthermore, an implicit viscous damping relaxation technique is applied to significantly reduce computational iterations required to achieve equilibrium in the comparatively fast solid response process. To validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, two distinct scenarios, i.e., a nonlinear hardening bar stretching and a fluid diffusion coupled with Nafion membrane flexure, are simulated. The results show good agreement with experimental data and results from other numerical methods, and the simulation time is reduced firstly by independently addressing different processes with the multi-time step algorithm and secondly decreasing solid dynamic relaxation time through the incorporation of damping techniques.

An SPH formulation for general plate and shell structures with finite deformation and large rotation

In this paper, we propose a reduced-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) formulation for quasi-static and dynamic analyses of plate and shell structures undergoing finite deformation and large rotation. By exploiting Uflyand-Mindlin plate theory, the present surface-particle formulation is able to resolve the thin structures by using only one layer of particles at the mid-surface. To resolve the geometric non-linearity and capture finite deformation and large rotation, two reduced-dimensional linear-reproducing correction matrices are introduced, and weighted non-singularity conversions between the rotation angle and pseudo normal are formulated. A new non-isotropic Kelvin-Voigt damping is proposed especially for the both thin and moderately thick plate and shell structures to increase the numerical stability. In addition, a shear-scaled momentum-conserving hourglass control algorithm with an adaptive limiter is introduced to suppress the mismatches between the particle position and pseudo normal and those estimated with the deformation gradient. A comprehensive set of test problems, for which the analytical or numerical results from literature or those of the volume-particle SPH model are available for quantitative and qualitative comparison, are examined to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the present method.

A fourth-order kernel for improving numerical accuracy and stability in Eulerian and total Lagrangian SPH

The error of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) using kernel for particle-based approximation mainly comes from smoothing and integration errors. The choice of kernels has a significant impact on the numerical accuracy, stability and computational efficiency. At present, the most popular kernels such as B-spline, truncated Gaussian (for compact support), Wendland kernels have 2nd-order smoothing error and Wendland kernel becomes mainstream in SPH community as its stability and accuracy. Due to the fact that the particle distribution after relaxation can achieve fast convergence of integration error respected to support radius, it is logical to choose kernels with higher-order smoothing error to improve the numerical accuracy. In this paper, the error of 4th-order Laguerre-Wendland kernel proposed by Litvinov et al. \cite{litvinov2015towards} is revisited and another 4th-order truncated Laguerre-Gauss kernel is further analyzed and considered to replace the widely used Wendland kernel. The proposed kernel has following three properties: One is that it avoids the pair-instability problem during the relaxation process, unlike the original truncated Gaussian kernel, and achieves much less relaxation residue than Wendland and Laguerre-Wendland kernels; One is the truncated compact support size is the same as the non-truncated compact support of Wendland kernel, which leads to both kernels' computational efficiency at the same level; Another is that the truncation error of this kernel is much less than that of Wendland kernel. Furthermore, a comprehensive set of $2D$ and $3D$ benchmark cases on Eulerian SPH for fluid dynamics and total Lagrangian SPH for solid dynamics validate the considerably improved numerical accuracy by using truncated Laguerre-Gauss kernel without introducing extra computational effort.

Extended Eulerian SPH and its realization of FVM

Eulerian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (Eulerian SPH) is considered as a potential meshless alternative to a traditional Eulerian mesh-based method, i.e. finite volume method (FVM), in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). While researchers have analyzed the differences between these two methods, a rigorous comparison of their performance and computational efficiency is hindered by the constraint related to the normal direction of interfaces in pairwise particle interactions within Eulerian SPH framework. To address this constraint and improve numerical accuracy, we introduce Eulerian SPH extensions, including particle relaxation to satisfy zero-order consistency, kernel correction matrix to ensure first-order consistency and release the constraint associated with the normal direction of interfaces, as well as dissipation limiters to enhance numerical accuracy and these extensions make Eulerian SPH rigorously equivalent to FVM. Furthermore, we implement mesh-based FVM within SPHinXsys, an open-source SPH library, through developing a parser to extract necessary information from the mesh file which is exported in the MESH format using the commercial software ICEM. Therefore, these comprehensive approaches enable a rigorous comparison between these two methods.

Numerical simulation of two-phase slug flows in horizontal pipelines: A 3-D smoothed particle hydrodynamics application

A fundamental difficulty of studying gas-liquid pipe flows is the prediction of the occurrence and characteristics of the slug flow regime, which plays a crucial role in the safety design of oil pipelines. Current empirical methods and one-dimensional computational models only achieve limited success. While 3-D numerical simulations are highly recommended, they have been very seldom used. We perform 3-D Lagrangian numerical simulations of gas-liquid pipe flows, and focus on the interfacial instabilities leading to slug formation. We adapt an existing multi-phase smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method based on a Riemann solver to achieve an efficient solver with no dependency on empirical correlations. To realize the high inlet velocities of gas and liquid an in- and outlet boundary condition is presented. The results are validated against existing experimental data, numerical simulations and analytical solutions. Multiple gas-liquid pipe flow patterns are predicted, namely, smooth stratified, stratified wavy, bubble flow, slug flow and bubble flow. Several principle characteristics of slug flows, e.g., pressure gradient, slug development and slug frequency are analyzed.

A method for automated regression test in scientific computing libraries: illustration with SPHinXsys

Scientific computing libraries, either being in-house or open-source, have experienced enormous progress in both engineering and scientific research. It is therefore essential to ensure that the modifications in the source code aroused by bug fixing or new feature development wouldn't compromise the accuracy and functionality that has already been validated and verified. With this in mind, this paper introduces a method for developing and implementing an automatic regression test environment and takes the open-source multi-physics library SPHinXsys \cite{zhang2021sphinxsys} as an example. Firstly, the reference database for each benchmark test is generated from monitored data by multiple executions. This database contains the maximum variation range of metrics for different types of strategies, i.e., time-averaged method, ensemble-averaged method as well as the dynamic time warping method, covering the uncertainty arising from parallel computing, particle relaxation, physical instabilities, etc. Then, new results obtained after source code modification will be tested with them according to a curve-similarity based comparison. Whenever the source code is updated, the regression test will be carried out automatically for all test cases and used to report the validity of the current results. This regression test environment has already been implemented in all dynamics test cases released in SPHinXsys, including fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, fluid-structure interaction, thermal and mass diffusion, reaction-diffusion, and their multi-physics coupling, and shows good capability for testing various problems. It's worth noting that while the present test environment is built and implemented for a specific scientific computing library, its underlying principle is generic and can be applied to many others.

An efficient and generalized consistency correction method for weakly-compressible SPH

In this paper, a new efficient and generalized consistency correction method for weakly-compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics is proposed and successfully implemented in the simulation of violent free-surface flow exhibiting breaking and impact events for the first time. It's well known that the original kernel gradient correction (KGC) encounters numerical instability resulting from matrix inversion. The present method remedies this issue by introducing a weighted average of the KGC matrix and the identity matrix, other than directly applying KGC matrix, to achieve numerical stability meanwhile decrease numerical dissipation. To ensure momentum conservation, the correction is implemented in a particle-average pattern by rewriting the the pressure term of the Riemann solution. Furthermore, the proposed weighted KGC scheme is incorporated into the dual-criteria time-stepping framework developed by Zhang et al. (2020) \cite{22} to achieve optimized computational efficiency. A set of numerical examples in both two- and three-dimensions are investigated to demonstrate that the present method can significantly reduce numerical dissipation meanwhile exhibit a smooth pressure field for general free-surface flows.

A 2D hybrid method for interfacial transport of passive scalars

A hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian method is proposed to simulate passive scalar transport on arbitrary shape interface. In this method, interface deformation is tracked by an Eulerian method while the transport of the passive scalar on the material interface is solved by a single-layer Lagrangian particle method. To avoid particle clustering, a novel remeshing approach is proposed. This remeshing method can resample particles, adjust the position of particles by a relaxation process, and transfer mass from pre-existing particles to resampled particles via a redistribution process, which preserves mass both globally and locally. Computational costs are controlled by an adaptive remeshing strategy. Accuracy is assessed by a series of test cases.

An hourglass-free formulation for total Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics

The total Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (TL-SPH) for elastic solid dynamics suffers from hourglass modes which can grow and lead to the failure of simulation for problems with large deformation. To address this long-standing issue, we present an hourglass-free formulation based on volumetric-devioatric stress decomposition. Inspired by the fact that the artifact of nonphysical zigzag particle distribution induced by the hourglass modes is mainly characterized by shear deformation and the standard SPH discretization for the viscous term in the Navier-Stokes (NS) equation, the present formulation computes the action of shear stress directly through the Laplacian of displacement other than from the divergence of shear stress. A comprehensive set of challenging benchmark cases are simulated to demonstrate that, while improving accuracy and computational efficiency, the present formulation is able to eliminate the hourglass modes and achieves very good numerical stability with a single general effective parameter. In addition, the deformation of a practically relevant stent structure is simulated to demonstrate the potential of the present method in the field of biomechanics.

First report of a solar energetic particle event observed by China's Tianwen-1 mission in transit to Mars

Solar energetic particles (SEPs) associated with flares and/or coronal mass ejection (CME)-driven shocks can impose acute radiation hazards to space explorations. To measure energetic particles in near-Mars space, the Mars Energetic Particle Analyzer (MEPA) instrument onboard China's Tianwen-1 (TW-1) mission was designed. Here, we report the first MEPA measurements of the widespread SEP event occurring on 29 November 2020 when TW-1 was in transit to Mars. This event occurred when TW-1 and Earth were magnetically well connected, known as the Hohmann-Parker effect, thus offering a rare opportunity to understand the underlying particle acceleration and transport process. Measurements from TW-1 and near-Earth spacecraft show similar double-power-law spectra and a radial dependence of the SEP peak intensities. Moreover, the decay phases of the time-intensity profiles at different locations clearly show the reservoir effect. We conclude that the double-power-law spectrum is likely generated at the acceleration site, and that a small but finite cross-field diffusion is crucial to understand the formation of the SEP reservoir phenomenon. These results provide insight into particle acceleration and transport associated with CME-driven shocks, which may contribute to the improvement of relevant physical models.

Level-set based pre-processing algorithm for particle-based methods

Obtaining high quality particle distribution representing clean geometry in pre-processing is essential for the simulation accuracy of the particle-based methods. In this paper, several level-set based techniques for cleaning up `dirty' geometries automatically and generating homogeneous particle distributions are presented. First, a non-resolved structure identifying method based on level-set field is employed to detect the tiny fragments which make the geometry `dirty' under a given resolutions. Second, a re-distance algorithm is proposed to remove the tiny fragments and reconstruct clean and smooth geometries. Third, a `static confinement' boundary condition is developed in the particle relaxation process. By complementing the kernel support for the particles near the geometric surface, the boundary condition achieves better body-fitted particle distribution on the narrow region with high curvature. Several numerical examples include a 2D airfoil 30P30N, 3D SPHinXsys symbol, a skyscraper with a flagpole and an inferior vena cava demonstrate that the present method not only cleans up the `dirty' geometries efficiently, but also provides better body-fitted homogeneous particle distribution for complex geometry.

A Lagrangian free-stream boundary condition for weakly compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics

This paper proposes the first free-stream boundary condition in a purely Lagrangian framework for weakly-compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH). The boundary condition is implemented based on several numerical techniques, including a spatio-temporal method and an ensuring technique for surface particle identification, far-field corrections of density and velocity near the free-stream boundary, and improved in- and outlet conditions which guarantee smooth inflow profile and free outflow particles without the issue of the truncated kernel. The accuracy and effectiveness of the method have been validated by the reference solutions of flow past a flat plate and circular cylinder, respectively. The method has also been tested with more complex flows to demonstrate its applicability, such as fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and 3D flow past a sphere.

A multi-resolution SPH framework: Application to multi-phase fluid-structure interactions

In the previous work, Zhang et al. proposed a multi-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method for fluid-structure interactions (FSI) with achieving an optimized computational efficiency meanwhile maintaining good numerical robustness and accuracy. In the present paper, this multi-resolution SPH framework where different spatial-temporal discretizations are applied for different sub-systems is extended to multi-phase flows involving large density ratio and interacting with rigid or flexible structure. To this end, a simple and efficient multi-phase model is introduced by exploiting different density reinitialization strategies other than applying different formulations to implement mass conservation to the light and heavy phases, respectively, to realize the target of using same artificial speed of sound for the both. To eliminate the unnatural voids and unrealistic phase separation meanwhile decrease the numerical dissipation, the transport velocity formulation are rewritten by applying temporal local flow state dependent background pressure. To handle the FSI coupling in both single- and multi-resolution scenarios in the triple point, the one-sided Riemann-based solid boundary condition is adopted. A set of examples involving multi-phase flows with high density ratio and complex interface and multi-phase FSI are studied to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of the present method. The validations presented herein and those reported in the original paper of Zhang et al. where single-phase FSI is studied put the present multi-resolution SPH framework in good stead in terms of computational efficiency for multi-physics applications.

Neural Image Beauty Predictor Based on Bradley-Terry Model

Image beauty assessment is an important subject of computer vision. Therefore, building a model to mimic the image beauty assessment becomes an important task. To better imitate the behaviours of the human visual system (HVS), a complete survey about images of different categories should be implemented. This work focuses on image beauty assessment. In this study, the pairwise evaluation method was used, which is based on the Bradley-Terry model. We believe that this method is more accurate than other image rating methods within an image group. Additionally, Convolution neural network (CNN), which is fit for image quality assessment, is used in this work. The first part of this study is a survey about the image beauty comparison of different images. The Bradley-Terry model is used for the calculated scores, which are the target of CNN model. The second part of this work focuses on the results of the image beauty prediction, including landscape images, architecture images and portrait images. The models are pretrained by the AVA dataset to improve the performance later. Then, the CNN model is trained with the surveyed images and corresponding scores. Furthermore, this work compares the results of four CNN base networks, i.e., Alex net, VGG net, Squeeze net and LSiM net, as discussed in literature. In the end, the model is evaluated by the accuracy in pairs, correlation coefficient and relative error calculated by survey results. Satisfactory results are achieved by our proposed methods with about 70 percent accuracy in pairs. Our work sheds more light on the novel image beauty assessment method. While more studies should be conducted, this method is a promising step.

A multi-order smoothed particle hydrodynamics method for cardiac electromechanics with the Purkinje network

In previous work, Zhang et al. (2021) \cite{zhang2021integrative} developed an integrated smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method to simulate the principle aspects of cardiac function, including electrophysiology, passive and active mechanical response of the myocardium. As the inclusion of the Purkinje network in electrocardiology is recognized as fundamental to accurately describing the electrical activation in the right and left ventricles, in this paper, we present a multi-order SPH method to handle the electrical propagation through the Purkinje system and in the myocardium with monodomain/monodomain coupling strategy. We first propose an efficient algorithm for network generation on arbitrarily complex surface by exploiting level-set geometry representation and cell-linked list neighbor search algorithm. Then, a reduced-order SPH method is developed to solve the one-dimensional monodomain equation to characterize the fast electrical activation through the Purkinje network. Finally, a multi-order coupling paradigm is introduced to capture the coupled nature of potential propagation arising from the interaction between the network and the myocardium. A set of numerical examples are studied to assess the computational performance, accuracy and versatility of the proposed methods. In particular, numerical study performed in realistic left ventricle demonstrates that the present method features all the physiological issues that characterize a heartbeat simulation, including the initiation of the signal in the Purkinje network and the systolic and diastolic phases. As expected, the results underlie the importance of using physiologically realistic Purkinje network for modeling cardiac functions.
