Discovery of a Unique Close Quasar-DSFG Pair Linked by a [C II] Bridge at $z=5.63$

We report the discovery of a unique quasar-dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) system at $z = 5.63$, consisting of the bright quasar J1133+1603 ($M_{\rm UV} = -27.42$) and its compact, dust-obscured companion, J1133c. ALMA observations reveal a prominent [C II] bridge connecting the quasar and DSFG, indicating ongoing interaction at a projected separation of 1.8 arcsec ($\sim$10 proper kpc). J1133c exhibits unusually bright and broad [C II] emission ($L_{\rm [CII]} > 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, FWHM $> 500$ km s$^{-1}$), with a [C II] luminosity five times that of the quasar, suggesting intense star formation or potential AGN activity. The inferred star formation rate from [C II] is approximately $10^3$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The remarkable properties of this pair strongly suggest that galaxy interactions may simultaneously trigger both starburst and quasar activity, driving rapid evolution in the early universe.

A unique window into the Epoch of Reionisation: A double-peaked Lyman-$α$ emitter in the proximity zone of a quasar at $z\sim 6.6$

We present a study of a double-peaked Ly$α$ emitter, named LAE-11, found in the proximity zone of QSO J0910-0414 at $z\sim6.6$. We use a combination of deep photometric data from Subaru Telescope, HST, and JWST with spectroscopic data from Keck/DEIMOS, NIRCam WFSS and NIRSpec MSA to characterise the ionising and general properties of the galaxy, as well as the quasar environment surrounding it. We detect Ly$α$, H$β$, [OIII] doublet, and H$α$ emission lines in the various spectral datasets. The presence of a double-peaked Ly$α$ line in the spectrum allows us to characterise the opening angle and lifetime of the QSO as $θ_Q>49.62$° and $t_Q > 3.8\times10^5$ years. LAE-11 is a fairly bright (M$_\rm{UV} = -19.84^{+0.14}_{-0.16}$), blue galaxy with a UV slope of $β= -2.61^{+0.06}_{-0.08}$. Since the galaxy is located in a quasar-ionised region, we have a unique opportunity to measure the escape fraction of Lyman Continuum photons using the un-attenuated double-peaked Ly$α$ emission profile and its equivalent width at such high redshift. We employ diagnostics which do not rely on the detection of Ly$α$ for comparison, and find that all tracers of ionising photon leakage agree within 1$σ$ uncertainty. We measure a moderate escape of Lyman Continuum photons from LAE-11 of $f_\rm{esc}^\rm{LyC} = (8 - 33)\%$. Detections of both H$α$ and H$β$ emission lines allow for separate measurements of the ionising photon production efficiency, resulting with $\log(ξ_\rm{ion}/\rm{Hz~erg^{-1}}) = 25.59\pm0.08$ and $25.65\pm0.09$, for H$α$ and H$β$, respectively. The total ionising output of LAE-11, $\log(f_\rm{esc}^\rm{LyC}ξ_\rm{ion, Hα}/\rm{Hz~erg^{-1}}) = 24.85^{+0.24}_{-0.34}$, is higher than the value of $24.3 - 24.8$ which is traditionally assumed as needed to drive Reionisation forward.

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): Spectroscopically Complete Census of Obscured Cosmic Star Formation Rate Density at $z=4-6$

We present a stringent measurement of the dust-obscured star-formation rate density (SFRD) at $z=4-6$ from the ASPIRE JWST Cycle-1 medium and ALMA Cycle-9 large program. We obtained JWST/NIRCam grism spectroscopy and ALMA 1.2-mm continuum map along 25 independent quasar sightlines, covering a total survey area of $\sim$35 arcmin$^2$ where we search for dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z = 0 - 7$. We identify eight DSFGs in seven fields at $z=4-6$ through the detection of H$α$ or [O III] $λ$5008 lines, including fainter lines such as H$β$, [O III] $λ$4960, [N II] $λ$6585, [S II] $λλ$6718,6733 for six sources. With this spectroscopically complete DSFG sample at $z=4-6$ and negligible impact from cosmic variance (shot noise), we measure the infrared luminosity function (IRLF) down to $L_\mathrm{IR} \sim 2\times10^{11}$ $L_\odot$. We find flattening of IRLF at $z=4-6$ towards the faint end (power-law slope $α= 0.59_{-0.45}^{+0.39}$). We determine the dust-obscured cosmic SFRD at this epoch as $\log[ρ_\mathrm{SFR,IR} / (\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-3})] = -1.52_{-0.13}^{+0.14}$. This is significantly higher than previous determination using ALMA data in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, which is void of DSFGs at $z=4-6$ because of strong cosmic variance (shot noise). We conclude that the majority ($66\pm7$%) of cosmic star formation at $z \sim 5$ is still obscured by dust. We also discuss the uncertainty of SFRD propagated from far-IR spectral energy distribution and IRLF at the bright end, which will need to be resolved with future ALMA and JWST observations.

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): JWST Supports Earlier Reionization around [OIII] Emitters

Understanding when and how reionization happened is crucial for studying the early structure formation and the properties of first galaxies in the Universe. At $z>5.5$, the observed IGM optical depth shows a significant scatter, indicating an inhomogeneous reionization process. However, the nature of the inhomogeneous reionization remains debated. ASPIRE is a JWST Cycle 1 program that has spectroscopically identified $>400$ [OIII] emitters in 25 quasar fields at $z>6.5$. Combined with deep ground-based optical spectroscopy of ASPIRE quasars, ASPIRE program provides the current largest sample for IGM-galaxy connection studies during cosmic reionization. We present the first results of IGM effective optical depth measurements around [OIII] emitters using 14 ASPIRE quasar fields. We find the IGM transmission is tightly related with reionization-era galaxies to the extent that significant excess of Ly$α$ transmission exists around [OIII] emitters. We measure the stacked IGM effective optical depth of IGM patches associated with [OIII] emitters and find they reach the same IGM effective optical depth at least dz~0.1 ahead of those IGM patches where no [OIII] emitters are detected, supporting earlier reionization around [OIII] emitters. Our results indicate an enhancement in IGM Ly$α$ transmission around [OIII] emitters at scales beyond 25 $h^{-1}$ cMpc, consistent with the predicted topology of reionization from fluctuating UV background (UVB) models.

Fast Outflow in the Host Galaxy of the Luminous z $=$ 7.5 Quasar J1007$+$2115

James Webb Space Telescope opens a new window to directly probe luminous quasars powered by billion solar mass black holes in the epoch of reionization and their co-evolution with massive galaxies with unprecedented details. In this paper, we report the first results from the deep NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy study of a quasar at $z = 7.5$. We obtain a bolometric luminosity of $\sim$$1.8\times10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and a black hole mass of $\sim$0.7--2.5$\times10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$ based on H$β$ emission line from the quasar spectrum. We discover $\sim$2 kpc scale, highly blueshifted ($\sim$$-$870 km/s) and broad ($\sim$1400 km/s) [O III] line emission after the quasar PSF has been subtracted. Such line emission most likely originates from a fast, quasar-driven outflow, the earliest one on galactic-scale known so far. The dynamical properties of this outflow fall within the typical ranges of quasar-driven outflows at lower redshift, and the outflow may be fast enough to reach the circumgalactic medium. Combining both the extended and nuclear outflow together, the mass outflow rate, $\sim$300 M$_{\odot}$yr, is $\sim$60%--380% of the star formation rate of the quasar host galaxy, suggesting that the outflow may expel a significant amount of gas from the inner region of the galaxy. The kinetic energy outflow rate, $\sim$3.6$\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, is $\sim$0.2% of the quasar bolometric luminosity, which is comparable to the minimum value required for negative feedback based on simulation predictions. The dynamical timescale of the extended outflow is $\sim$1.7 Myr, consistent with the typical quasar lifetime in this era.

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): Broad-line AGN at $z=4-5$ revealed by JWST/NIRCam WFSS

Low-luminosity AGNs with low-mass black holes (BHs) in the early universe are fundamental to understanding the BH growth and their co-evolution with the host galaxies. Utilizing JWST NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS), we perform a systematic search for broad-line ${\rm Hα}$ emitters (BHAEs) at $z\approx 4-5$ in 25 fields of the ASPIRE (A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era) project, covering a total area of 275 arcmin$^2$. We identify 16 BHAEs with FWHM of the broad components spanning from $\sim$ 1000 km s$^{-1}$ to 3000 km s$^{-1}$. Assuming the broad linewidths arise due to Doppler broadening around BHs, the implied BH masses range from $10^7$ to $10^{8}~M_\odot$, with broad ${\rm Hα}$-converted bolometric luminosity of $10^{44.5}-10^{45.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and Eddington ratios of $0.07-0.47$. The spatially extended structure of the F200W stacked image may trace the stellar light from the host galaxies. The ${\rm Hα}$ luminosity function indicates an increasing AGN fraction towards the higher ${\rm Hα}$ luminosities. We find possible evidence for clustering of BHAEs: two sources are at the same redshift with a projected separation of 519 kpc; one BHAE appears as a composite system residing in an overdense region with three close companion ${\rm Hα}$ emitters. Three BHAEs exhibit blueshifted absorption troughs indicative of the presence of high-column-density gas. We find the broad-line and photometrically selected BHAE samples exhibit different distributions in the optical continuum slopes, which can be attributed to their different selection methods. The ASPIRE broad-line ${\rm Hα}$ sample provides a good database for future studies of faint AGN populations at high redshift.

A Generalized Hybrid Hoare Logic

Deductive verification of hybrid systems (HSs) increasingly attracts more attention in recent years because of its power and scalability, where a powerful specification logic for HSs is the cornerstone. Often, HSs are naturally modelled by concurrent processes that communicate with each other. However, existing specification logics cannot easily handle such models. In this paper, we present a specification logic and proof system for Hybrid Communicating Sequential Processes (HCSP), that extends CSP with ordinary differential equations (ODE) and interrupts to model interactions between continuous and discrete evolution. Because it includes a rich set of algebraic operators, complicated hybrid systems can be easily modelled in an algebra-like compositional way in HCSP. Our logic can be seen as a generalization and simplification of existing hybrid Hoare logics (HHL) based on duration calculus (DC), as well as a conservative extension of existing Hoare logics for concurrent programs. Its assertion logic is the first-order theory of differential equations (FOD), together with assertions about traces recording communications, readiness, and continuous evolution. We prove continuous relative completeness of the logic w.r.t. FOD, as well as discrete relative completeness in the sense that continuous behaviour can be arbitrarily approximated by discretization. Finally, we implement the above logic in Isabelle/HOL, and apply it to verify two case studies to illustrate the power and scalability of our logic.

Mars 2.0: A Toolchain for Modeling, Analysis, Verification and Code Generation of Cyber-Physical Systems

We introduce Mars 2.0 for modeling, analysis, verification and code generation of Cyber-Physical Systems. Mars 2.0 integrates Mars 1.0 with several important extensions and improvements, allowing the design of cyber-physical systems using the combination of AADL and Simulink/Stateflow, which provide a unified graphical framework for modeling the functionality, physicality and architecture of the system to be developed. For a safety-critical system, formal analysis and verification of its combined AADL and Simulink/Stateflow model can be conducted via the following steps. First, the toolchain automatically translates AADL and Simulink/Stateflow models into Hybrid CSP (HCSP), an extension of CSP for formally modeling hybrid systems. Second, the HCSP processes can be simulated using the HCSP simulator, and to complement incomplete simulation, they can be verified using the Hybrid Hoare Logic prover in Isabelle/HOL, as well as the more automated HHLPy prover. Finally, implementations in SystemC or C can be automatically generated from the verified HCSP processes. The transformation from AADL and Simulink/Stateflow to HCSP, and the one from HCSP to SystemC or C, are both guaranteed to be correct with formal proofs. This approach allows model-driven design of safety-critical cyber-physical systems based on graphical and formal models and proven-correct translation procedures. We demonstrate the use of the toolchain on several benchmarks of varying complexity, including several industrial-sized examples.

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): Impact of Galaxies on the CGM Metal Enrichment at z > 6 Using the JWST and VLT

We characterize the multiphase circumgalactic medium and galaxy properties at z = 6.0-6.5 in four quasar fields from the James Webb Space Telescope A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE) program. We use the Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectra of quasar J0305-3150 to identify one new metal absorber at z = 6.2713 with multiple transitions (OI, MgI, FeII and CII). They are combined with the published absorbing systems in Davies et al. (2023a) at the same redshift range to form of a sample of nine metal absorbers at z = 6.03 to 6.49. We identify eight galaxies within 1000 km s$^{-1}$ and 350 kpc around the absorbing gas from the ASPIRE spectroscopic data, with their redshifts secured by [OIII]($λλ$4959, 5007) doublets and H$β$ emission lines. Our spectral energy distribution fitting indicates that the absorbing galaxies have stellar mass ranging from 10$^{7.2}$ to 10$^{8.8}M_{\odot}$ and metallicity between 0.02 and 0.4 solar. Notably, the z = 6.2713 system in the J0305-3150 field resides in a galaxy overdensity region, which contains two (tentatively) merging galaxies within 350 kpc and seven galaxies within 1 Mpc. We measure the relative abundances of $α$ elements to iron ([$α$/Fe]) and find that the CGM gas in the most overdense region exhibits a lower [$α$/Fe] ratio. Our modeling of the galaxy's chemical abundance favors a top-heavy stellar initial mass function, and hints that we may be witnessing the contribution of the first generation Population III stars to the CGM at the end of reionization epoch.

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): JWST Discovers an Overdensity around a Metal Absorption-selected Galaxy at $z\sim5.5$

The launch of ${\it JWST}$ opens a new window for studying the connection between metal-line absorbers and galaxies at the end of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Previous studies have detected absorber-galaxy pairs in limited quantities through ground-based observations. To enhance our understanding of the relationship between absorbers and their host galaxies at $z>5$, we utilized the NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) to search for absorber-associated galaxies by detecting their rest-frame optical emission lines (e.g., [OIII] + H$β$). We report the discovery of a MgII-associated galaxy at $z=5.428$ using data from the ${\it JWST}$ ASPIRE program. The MgII absorber is detected on the spectrum of quasar J0305--3150 with a rest-frame equivalent width of 0.74$\mathring{A}$. The associated galaxy has an [OIII] luminosity of $10^{42.5}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$ with an impact parameter of 24.9 proper kiloparsecs (pkpc). The joint ${\it HST}$-${\it JWST}$ spectral energy distribution (SED) implies a stellar mass and star-formation rate of ${\rm M_* \approx 10^{8.8}}$ ${\rm M_{\odot}}$, ${\rm SFR}\approx 10\ {\rm M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}}$. Its [OIII] equivalent width and stellar mass are typical of [OIII] emitters at this redshift. Furthermore, connecting the outflow starting time to the SED-derived stellar age, the outflow velocity of this galaxy is $\sim300\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, consistent with theoretical expectations. We identified six additional [OIII] emitters with impact parameters of up to $\sim300$ pkpc at similar redshifts ($|dv|<1000\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$). The observed number is consistent with that in cosmological simulations. This pilot study suggests that systematically investigating the absorber-galaxy connection within the ASPIRE program will provide insights into the metal-enrichment history in the early universe.

MAGNIF: A Tentative Lensed Rotating Disk at $z=8.34$ detected by JWST NIRCam WFSS with Dynamical Forward Modeling

We report galaxy MACS0416-Y3 behind the lensing cluster MACSJ0416.1--2403 as a tentative rotating disk at $z=8.34$ detected through its [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission in JWST NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopic observations. The discovery is based on our new grism dynamical modeling methodology for JWST NIRCam slitless spectroscopy, using the data from ``Median-band Astrophysics with the Grism of NIRCam in Frontier Fields'' (MAGNIF), a JWST Cycle-2 program. The [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission line morphology in grism data shows velocity offsets compared to the F480M direct imaging, suggestive of rotation. Assuming a geometrically thin disk model, we constrain the rotation velocity of $v_{\rm rot}=58^{+53}_{-35}$ km s$^{-1}$ via forward modeling of the two-dimensional (2D) spectrum. We obtain the kinematic ratio of $v_{\rm rot}/σ_v=1.6^{+1.9}_{-0.9}$, where $σ_v$ is the velocity dispersion, in line with a quasi-stable thin disk. The resulting dynamical mass is estimated to be $\log(M_{\rm dyn}/M_{\odot})=8.4^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$. If the rotation confirmed, our discovery suggests that rotating gaseous disks may have already existed within 600 million years after Big Bang.

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): A First Look at the Rest-frame Optical Spectra of $z > 6.5$ Quasars Using JWST

Studies of rest-frame optical emission in quasars at $z>6$ have historically been limited by the wavelengths accessible by ground-based telescopes. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) now offers the opportunity to probe this emission deep into the reionization epoch. We report the observations of eight quasars at $z>6.5$ using the JWST/NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy, as a part of the ''A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE)" program. Our JWST spectra cover the quasars' emission between rest frame $\sim$ 4100 and 5100 Å. The profiles of these quasars' broad H$β$ emission lines span a FWHM from 3000 to 6000 $\rm{km~s^{-1}}$. The H$β$-based virial black hole (BH) masses, ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 billion solar masses, are generally consistent with their MgII-based BH masses. The new measurements based on the more reliable H$β$ tracer thus confirm the existence of billion solar-mass BHs in the reionization epoch. In the observed [OIII] $λλ$4960,5008 doublets of these luminous quasars, broad components are more common than narrow core components ($\le~1200~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$), and only one quasar shows stronger narrow components than broad. Two quasars exhibit significantly broad and blueshifted [OIII] emission, thought to trace galactic-scale outflows, with median velocities of $-610~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$ and $-1430~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$ relative to the [CII] $158\,μ$m line. All eight quasars show strong optical FeII emission, and follow the Eigenvector 1 relations defined by low-redshift quasars. The entire ASPIRE program will eventually cover 25 quasars and provide a statistical sample for the studies of the BHs and quasar spectral properties.

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): JWST Reveals a Filamentary Structure around a z=6.61 Quasar

We present the first results from the JWST ASPIRE program (A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era). This program represents an imaging and spectroscopic survey of 25 reionization-era quasars and their environments by utilizing the unprecedented capabilities of NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. ASPIRE will deliver the largest ($\sim280~{\rm arcmin}^2$) galaxy redshift survey at 3-4 $μ$m among JWST Cycle-1 programs and provide extensive legacy values for studying the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs), the assembly of galaxies, early metal enrichment, and cosmic reionization. In this first ASPIRE paper, we report the discovery of a filamentary structure traced by the luminous quasar J0305-3150 and ten [OIII] emitters at $z=6.6$. This structure has a 3D galaxy overdensity of $δ_{\rm gal}=12.6$ over 637 cMpc$^3$, one of the most overdense structures known in the early universe, and could eventually evolve into a massive galaxy cluster. Together with existing VLT/MUSE and ALMA observations of this field, our JWST observations reveal that J0305-3150 traces a complex environment where both UV-bright and dusty galaxies are present, and indicate that the early evolution of galaxies around the quasar is not simultaneous. In addition, we discovered 31 [OIII] emitters in this field at other redshifts, $5.3<z<6.7$, with half of them situated at $z\sim5.4$ and $z\sim6.2$. This indicates that star-forming galaxies, such as [OIII] emitters, are generally clustered at high redshifts. These discoveries demonstrate the unparalleled redshift survey capabilities of NIRCam WFSS and the potential of the full ASPIRE survey dataset.

(Nearly) Model-Independent Constraints on the Neutral Hydrogen Fraction in the Intergalactic Medium at $z\sim 5-7$ Using Dark Pixel Fractions in Ly$α$ and Ly$β$ Forests

Cosmic reionization was the last major phase transition of hydrogen from neutral to highly ionized in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current observations show that the IGM is significantly neutral at $z>7$, and largely ionized by $z\sim5.5$. However, most methods to measure the IGM neutral fraction are highly model-dependent, and are limited to when the volume-averaged neutral fraction of the IGM is either relatively low ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI} \lesssim 10^{-3}$) or close to unity ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI}\sim 1$). In particular, the neutral fraction evolution of the IGM at the critical redshift range of $z=6-7$ is poorly constrained. We present new constraints on $\bar{x}_{\rm HI}$ at $z\sim5.1-6.8$, by analyzing deep optical spectra of $53$ quasars at $5.73 6.1$ are consistent with the redshift evolution of the neutral fraction of the IGM derived from the Planck 2018.

Deep XMM-Newton Observations of an X-ray Weak, Broad Absorption Line Quasar at $z=6.5$

We report X-ray observations of the most distant known gravitationally lensed quasar, J0439+1634 at $z=6.52$, which is also a broad absorption line (BAL) quasar, using the XMM-Newton Observatory. With a 130 ks exposure, the quasar is significantly detected as a point source at the optical position with a total of 358$^{+19}_{-19}$ net counts using the EPIC instrument. By fitting a power-law plus Galactic absorption model to the observed spectra, we obtain a spectral slope of $Γ=1.45^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$. The derived optical-to-X-ray spectral slope $α_{\rm{ox}}$ is $-2.07^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$, suggesting that the X-ray emission of J0439+1634 is weaker by a factor of 18 than the expectation based on its 2500 Angstrom luminosity and the average $α_{\rm{ox}}$ vs. luminosity relationship. This is the first time that an X-ray weak BAL quasar at $z>6$ has been observed spectroscopically. Its X-ray weakness is consistent with the properties of BAL quasars at lower redshift. By fitting a model including an intrinsic absorption component, we obtain intrinsic column densities of $N_{\rm{H}}=2.8^{+0.7}_{-0.6}\times10^{23}\,\rm{cm}^{-2}$ and $N_{\rm{H}}= 4.3^{+1.8}_{-1.5}\times10^{23}\,\rm{cm}^{-2}$, assuming a fixed $Γ$ of 1.9 and a free $Γ$, respectively. The intrinsic rest-frame 2--10 keV luminosity is derived as $(9.4-15.1)\times10^{43}\,\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$, after correcting for lensing magnification ($μ=51.3$). The absorbed power-law model fitting indicates that J0439+1634 is the highest redshift obscured quasar with a direct measurement of the absorbing column density. The intrinsic high column density absorption can reduce the X-ray luminosity by a factor of $3-7$, which also indicates that this quasar could be a candidate of intrinsically X-ray weak quasar.

Probing the disk-corona systems and broad line regions of changing-look quasars with X-ray and optical observations

"Changing-look" quasars are a new class of highly variable active galactic nuclei that have changed their spectral type over surprisingly short timescales of just a few years. The origin of this phenomenon is debated, but is likely to reflect some change in the accretion flow. To investigate the disk-corona systems in these objects, we measure optical/UV-X-ray spectral indices ($α_{\rm OX}$) and Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd}$) of ten previously-discovered changing-look quasars at two or more epochs. By comparing these data with simulated results based on the behavior of X-ray binaries, we find possible similarities in spectral indices below 1% Eddington ratio. We further investigate the Eddington ratios of changing-look quasars before and after their spectral type changes, and find that changing-look quasars cross the 1% Eddington ratio boundary when their broad emission lines disappear/emerge. This is consistent with the disk-wind model as the origin of broad emission lines.

Intra-cluster GC-LMXB in the Fornax galaxy cluster

The formation of Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) is favored within dense stellar systems such as Globular Clusters (GCs). The connection between LMXB and Globular Clusters has been extensively studied in the literature, but these studies have always been restricted to the innermost regions of galaxies. We present a study of LMXB in GCs within the central 1.5 deg^2 of the Fornax cluster with the aim of confirming the existence of a population of LMXB in intra-cluster GCs and understand if their properties are related to the host GCs, to the environment or/and to different formation channels.

Starburst and post-starburst high-redshift protogalaxies: The feedback impact of high energy cosmic rays

Quenching of star-formation has been identified in many starburst and post-starburst galaxies, indicating burst-like star-formation histories (SFH) in the primordial Universe. We have investigated the role of high energy cosmic rays (CRs) in such environments, particularly how they could contribute to this burst-like SFH via quenching and feedback. These high energy particles interact with the baryon and radiation fields of their host via hadronic processes to produce secondary leptons. The secondary particles then also interact with ambient radiation fields to generate X-rays through inverse-Compton scattering. In addition, they can thermalise directly with the semi-ionised medium via Coulomb processes. Heating at a rate of $\sim 10^{-25} \; \text{erg}~\text{cm}^{-3}~\text{s}^{-1}$ can be attained by Coulomb processes in a star-forming galaxy with one core-collapse SN event per decade, and this is sufficient to cause quenching of star-formation. At high-redshift, a substantial amount of CR secondary electron energy can be diverted into inverse-Compton X-ray emission. This yields an X-ray luminosity of above $10^{41}~\text{erg}~\text{s}^{-1}$ by redshift $z=7$ which drives a further heating effect, operating over larger scales. This would be able to halt inflowing cold gas filaments, strangulating subsequent star-formation. We selected a sample of 16 starburst and post-starburst galaxies at $7\lesssim z \lesssim 9$ and determine the star-formation rates they could have sustained. We applied a model with CR injection, propagation and heating to calculate energy deposition rates in these 16 sources. Our calculations show that CR feedback cannot be neglected as it has the strength to suppress star-formation in these systems. We also show that their currently observed quiescence is consistent with the suffocation of cold inflows, probably by a combination of X-ray and CR heating.
