SN 2021pfs: A Type Ia Supernova Likely Affected by Progenitor Metallicity, as Revealed by Comparison with Its Twin Counterpart

We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the normal type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) 2021pfs, which occurred in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5427 at a redshift 0.009. SN 2021pfs reached an absolute \textit{B}-band peak magnitude of $M_{\rm max}(B)=$-19.28 $\pm$ 0.40 mag. The mag and a post-peak decline rate of $Δm_{15}(B)=$1.13 $\pm$ 0.06 mag. The observed properties of this nearby SN Ia closely resemble those of SN 2011fe, including the main optical spectroscopic features and photometric evolution. Despite their similar decline rates, SN 2021pfs rose more rapidly in the $U$ band but more slowly in the $r$ and $i$ bands compared to SN 2011fe in very early phases. This photometric difference, particularly at short wavelengths, can introduce a systematic uncertainty of up to $\sim$12% in distance estimates. Analysis of the host galaxy's local and global environment shows an environment consistent with producing a higher-metallicity progenitor for SN 2021pfs than that of SN 2011fe.This higher progenitor metallicity may explain the observed photometric discrepancy and the resulting distance between SN 2021pfs and SN 2011fe, though a larger sample of such "twin" SNe Ia is needed to confirm this trend and assess its impact on cosmological measurements.

AT 2024wpp: the most luminous fast-evolving optical transient linked to the merger explosion of a black-hole binary

Fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) represent one of the most exotic astrophysical transients, exhibiting unusually strong emission across X-ray, optical, and radio wavelengths. Their physical origins remain highly debated, with proposed explanations ranging from stellar explosion to tidal disruption event (TDE). Here we report observations of the most luminous FBOT, AT 2024wpp whose post-peak luminosity rebrightens in X ray and becomes flattening in optical in a manner follows the decay rate characteristic of TDEs ($L_{\rm bol} \propto t^{-5/3}$). This invokes energy contribution of accretion by a central compact object, getting further corroborations from hardening of X-ray spectral index and detection of outflow inferred from the emission lines at similar phase. Detailed modeling of luminsoity evolution favors a coalesce explosion of a 34 M$_{\odot}$ Wolf-Rayet star with a 15 M$_{\odot}$ black hole (BH), demonstrating that some FBOTs may be associated with TDE of a stellar blackhole.

The R2Pub Telescopes for Surveying: An Overview and Performance Evaluation of the System

The R2Pub telescope, built by the Beijing Planetarium, is a 60 cm equatorial binocular telescope located at the Daocheng site of Yunnan Observatories in China, at an altitude of about 4700 m. This paper presents an overview of the R2Pub telescope system, including its design, instrumentation, and survey capabilities, and reports an initial evaluation of its system performance. R2Pub is a prime-focus binocular system, with each optical tube covering a field of view of approximately 18 square degrees. It is designed to detect a wide range of transient and variable sources in the local universe, such as variable stars, eclipsing binaries, supernovae, gamma-ray burst afterglows, tidal disruption events, active galactic nuclei, and other unknown transients. The observatory infrastructure, including the dome, equatorial mount, optical tubes, and associated subsystems, has been fully constructed and installed, and the system has entered the commissioning phase. Benefiting from the high-altitude location, good seeing conditions, and dark sky background at the Daocheng site, performance tests during commissioning show that the R2Pub system can reach a 5-sigma limiting magnitude of about 18.7 mag in the Pan-STARRS r' band with a 60 s exposure. Ongoing observations with R2Pub are expected to contribute to studies of variable and transient phenomena and to enhance public outreach in astronomy. The binocular design enables simultaneous dual-band observations, providing instantaneous color information for transient sources and improving the classification and physical characterization of their properties and evolution.

SN 2021hpr: A Normal Type Ia Supernova Showing Excess Emission in the Early Rising Phase

We present extensive optical observations of a nearby Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), SN 2021hpr, located in the spiral galaxy NGC 3147 at a distance of $\sim$ 45 Mpc. Our observations cover a phase within $\sim 1-2$ days to $\sim 290$ days after the explosion. SN 2021hpr is found to be a spectroscopically normal SN Ia, with an absolute B-band peak magnitude of $M_{max}(B) \approx -19.16 \pm 0.14$ mag and a post-peak decline rate of $Δm_{15}(B)= 1.00 \pm 0.01 $ mag. Early-time light curves showed a $\sim 7.0 \%$ excess emission compared to a homogeneously expanding fireball model, likely due to SN ejecta interacting with a companion or immediate circumstellar matter. The optical spectra of SN 2021hpr are overall similar to those of normal SNe Ia, but characterized by prominent detached high-velocity features (HVFs) of Si {\sc ii} and Ca {\sc ii} in the early phase. After examining a small sample of well-observed normal SNe Ia, we find that the HVFs are likely common for the subgroup with early-excess emission. The association of early bump feature with the HVFs could be attributed to density or abundance enhancement at the outer layer of the exploding star, likely as a result of interactions with companion$/$CSM or experiencing more complete burning. Nevertheless, the redshifted Fe {\sc ii} and Ni {\sc ii} lines in the nebular-phase spectra of SN 2021hpr, contrary to the blueshift trend seen in other SNe Ia showing early bump features, indicate its peculiarity in the explosion that remains to be understood.

An X-ray high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation in NGC 1365

This study presents the detection of a high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365 based on observational data obtained by \emph{XMM-Newton} in January 2004. Utilizing the weighted wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) and Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP) methods, a QPO signal is identified at a frequency of $2.19 \times 10^{-4}\ {\rm Hz}$ (4566 s), with a confidence level of 3.6\ $σ$. The signal is notably absent in the lower 0.2 -- 1.0 keV energy band, with the primary contribution emerging from the 2.0 -- 10.0 keV band, where the confidence level reaches 3.9 $σ$. Spectral analysis shows that there are multiple absorption and emission lines in the high-energy band (> 6\ keV). The correlation between the QPO frequency ($f_{\rm QPO}$) and the mass of the central black hole ($M_{\rm BH}$) of NGC 1365 aligns with the established logarithmic trend observed across black holes, indicating the QPO is of high frequency. This discovery provides new clues for studying the generation mechanism of QPOs in Seyfert galaxies, which helps us understand the accretion process around supermassive black holes and the characteristics of strong gravitational fields in active galactic nuclei.

AHMF: Adaptive Hybrid-Memory-Fusion Model for Driver Attention Prediction

Accurate driver attention prediction can serve as a critical reference for intelligent vehicles in understanding traffic scenes and making informed driving decisions. Though existing studies on driver attention prediction improved performance by incorporating advanced saliency detection techniques, they overlooked the opportunity to achieve human-inspired prediction by analyzing driving tasks from a cognitive science perspective. During driving, drivers' working memory and long-term memory play crucial roles in scene comprehension and experience retrieval, respectively. Together, they form situational awareness, facilitating drivers to quickly understand the current traffic situation and make optimal decisions based on past driving experiences. To explicitly integrate these two types of memory, this paper proposes an Adaptive Hybrid-Memory-Fusion (AHMF) driver attention prediction model to achieve more human-like predictions. Specifically, the model first encodes information about specific hazardous stimuli in the current scene to form working memories. Then, it adaptively retrieves similar situational experiences from the long-term memory for final prediction. Utilizing domain adaptation techniques, the model performs parallel training across multiple datasets, thereby enriching the accumulated driving experience within the long-term memory module. Compared to existing models, our model demonstrates significant improvements across various metrics on multiple public datasets, proving the effectiveness of integrating hybrid memories in driver attention prediction.

Contextual Embedding Learning to Enhance 2D Networks for Volumetric Image Segmentation

The segmentation of organs in volumetric medical images plays an important role in computer-aided diagnosis and treatment/surgery planning. Conventional 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can hardly exploit the spatial correlation of volumetric data. Current 3D CNNs have the advantage to extract more powerful volumetric representations but they usually suffer from occupying excessive memory and computation nevertheless. In this study we aim to enhance the 2D networks with contextual information for better volumetric image segmentation. Accordingly, we propose a contextual embedding learning approach to facilitate 2D CNNs capturing spatial information properly. Our approach leverages the learned embedding and the slice-wisely neighboring matching as a soft cue to guide the network. In such a way, the contextual information can be transferred slice-by-slice thus boosting the volumetric representation of the network. Experiments on challenging prostate MRI dataset (PROMISE12) and abdominal CT dataset (CHAOS) show that our contextual embedding learning can effectively leverage the inter-slice context and improve segmentation performance. The proposed approach is a plug-and-play, and memory-efficient solution to enhance the 2D networks for volumetric segmentation. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/JuliusWang-7/CE_Block.

The first low-mass eclipsing binary within the fully convective zone from TMTS

We present a comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the short-period ($\sim$5.32 hours) and low-mass eclipsing binary TMTSJ0803 discovered by Tsinghua-Ma Huateng Telescope for Survey (TMTS). By fitting the light curves and radial velocity data with the Wilson--Devinney code, we find that the binary is composed of two late spotted active M dwarfs below the fully convective boundary. This is supported by the discovery of a significant Balmer emission lines in the LAMOST spectrum and prominent coronal X-ray emission. In comparison with the typical luminosity of rapidly rotating fully convective stars, the much brighter X-ray luminosity ($L_{X}/L_{\rm{bol}} = 0.0159 \pm 0.0059$) suggests the stellar magnetic activity of fully convective stars could be enhanced in such a close binary system. Given the metallicity of [M/H] = $-$ 0.35 dex as inferred from the LAMOST spectrum, we measure the masses and radii of both stars to be $M_{1} = 0.169 \pm 0.010~M_{\odot}$, $M_{2} = 0.162 \pm 0.016~M_{\odot}$, $R_{1} = 0.170 \pm 0.006~R_{\odot}$, and $R_{2} = 0.156 \pm 0.006~R_{\odot}$, respectively. Based on the luminosity ratio from the light curve modeling, the effective temperatures of two components are also estimated. In comparison with the stellar evolution models, the radii and effective temperatures of two components are all below the isochrones. The radius deflation might be mainly biased by a small radial velocity (RV) data or (and) a simple correction on RVs, while the discrepancy in effective temperature might be due to the enhanced magnetic activity in this binary.

Variable white dwarfs in TMTS: Asteroseismological analysis of a ZZ Ceti star, TMTS J17184064+2524314

The Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescope for Survey (TMTS) has been constantly monitoring the northern sky since 2020 in search of rapidly variable stars. To find variable white dwarfs (WDs), the TMTS catalog is cross-matched with the WD catalog of Gaia EDR3, resulting in over 3000 light curves of WD candidates. The WD TMTS J17184064+2524314 (hereafter J1718) is the second ZZ~Ceti star discovered among these common sources. Based on the light curves from TMTS, follow-up photometric observations, and TESS, 10 periods and 3 combination periods are detected. A rotation period of $25.12\pm0.18$ hr is derived, according to the identified rotational splitting. Our spectroscopic observation indicates that this WD belongs to DA type with $T_{\rm eff}=11,670\pm604$ K, log $g=8.16\pm0.36$, $M = 0.70\pm0.23$ M$_{\odot}$, and age=$0.51\pm0.34$ Gyr. Based on core-parameterized asteroseismological model grids ($\geqslant$ 14 million), we derive a best-fit solution of $T_{\rm eff}=11,640\pm20$ K, log $g=8.267\pm0.008$, and $M = 0.750\pm0.005$ M$_{\odot}$ for J1718, consistent with the spectral fitting results. For this WD, the corresponding carbon and oxygen abundances in the core are 0.43 and 0.57, respectively. The distance derived from the intrinsic luminosity given by asteroseismology is $64\pm15$ pc, in accord with the distance of $70.1\pm0.2$ pc from Gaia DR3 within the uncertainties.

Implications for the Explosion Mechanism of Type Ia Supernovae from their Late-time Spectra

Late-time spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are important in clarifying the physics of their explosions, as they provide key clues to the inner structure of the exploding white dwarfs. We examined late-time optical spectra of 36 SNe Ia, including five from our own project (SNe 2019np, 2019ein, 2021hpr, 2021wuf, and 2022hrs), with phase coverage of $\sim 200$ to $\sim 400$ days after maximum light. At this late phase, the outer ejecta have become transparent and the features of inner iron-group elements emerge in the spectra. Based on multicomponent Gaussian fits and reasonable choices for the pseudocontinuum around Ni and Fe emission features, we get reliable estimates of the Ni to Fe ratio, which is sensitive to the explosion models of SNe Ia. Our results show that the majority (about 67%) of our SNe Ia are more consistent with the sub-Chandrasekhar-mass (i.e., double-detonation) model, although they could be affected by evolutionary or ionisation effects. Moreover, we find that the Si II $λ$6355 velocity measured around the time of maximum light tends to increase with the Ni to Fe ratio for the subsample with either redshifted or blueshifted nebular velocities, suggesting that progenitor metallicity might play an important role in accounting for the observed velocity diversity of SNe Ia.

FacetClumps: A Facet-based Molecular Clump Detection Algorithm

A comprehensive understanding of molecular clumps is essential for investigating star formation. We present an algorithm for molecular clump detection, called FacetClumps. This algorithm uses a morphological approach to extract signal regions from the original data. The Gaussian Facet model is employed to fit the signal regions, which enhances the resistance to noise and the stability of the algorithm in diverse overlapping areas. The introduction of the extremum determination theorem of multivariate functions offers theoretical guidance for automatically locating clump centers. To guarantee that each clump is continuous, the signal regions are segmented into local regions based on gradient, and then the local regions are clustered into the clump centers based on connectivity and minimum distance to identify the regional information of each clump. Experiments conducted with both simulated and synthetic data demonstrate that FacetClumps exhibits great recall and precision rates, small location error and flux loss, a high consistency between the region of detected clump and that of simulated clump, and is generally stable in various environments. Notably, the recall rate of FacetClumps in the synthetic data, which comprises $^{13}CO$ ($J = 1-0$) emission line of the MWISP within $11.7^{\circ} \leq l \leq 13.4^{\circ}$, $0.22^{\circ} \leq b \leq 1.05^{\circ}$ and 5 km s$^{-1}$ $\leq v \leq$ 35 km s$^{-1}$ and simulated clumps, reaches 90.2%. Additionally, FacetClumps demonstrates satisfactory performance when applied to observational data.

Properties and Asteroseismological analysis of a new ZZ ceti discovered by TMTS

Tsinghua university-Ma Huateng Telescope for Survey (TMTS) aims to discover rapidly evolving transients by monitoring the northern sky. The TMTS catalog is cross-matched with the white dwarf (WD) catalog of Gaia EDR3, and light curves of more than a thousand WD candidates are obtained so far. Among them, the WD TMTS J23450729+5813146 (hereafter J2345) is one interesting common source. Based on the light curves from the TMTS and follow-up photometric observations, periods of 967.113 s, 973.734 s, 881.525 s, 843.458 s, 806.916 s and 678.273 s are identified. In addition, the TESS observations suggest a 3.39 h period but this can be attributed to the rotation of a comoving M dwarf located within 3". The spectroscopic observation indicates that this WD is DA type with Teff = 11778+/-617K,log g = 8.38+/-0.31,mass=0.84+/-0.20Msun and age=0.704+/-0.377 Gyrs. Asteroseismological analysis reveals a global best-fit solution of Teff =12110+/-10K and mass=0.760+/-0.005Msun,consistent with the spectral fitting results, and Oxygen and Carbon abundances in the core center are 0.73 and 0.27, respectively. The distance derived from the intrinsic luminosity given by asteroseismology is 93 parsec, which is in agreement with the distance of 98 parsec from Gaia DR3. Additionally, kinematic study shows that this WD is likely a thick disk star. The mass of its zero-age main-sequence mass is estimated to be 3.08 Msun and has a main-sequence plus cooling age of roughly 900 Myrs.

An 18.9-minute Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsator Crossing the 'Hertzsprung Gap' of Hot Subdwarfs

Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) represent a new and rare class of hot pulsating stars with unusually large amplitudes and short periods. Up to now, only 24 confirmed BLAPs have been identified from more than one billion monitored stars, including a group with pulsation period longer than $\sim 20$ min (classical BLAPs, hereafter) and the other group with pulsation period below $\sim 8$ min. The evolutionary path that could give rise to such kinds of stellar configurations is unclear. Here we report on a comprehensive study of the peculiar BLAP discovered by the Tsinghua University - Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS), TMTS J035143.63+584504.2 (TMTS-BLAP-1). This new BLAP has an 18.9 min pulsation period and is similar to the BLAPs with a low surface gravity and an extended helium-enriched envelope, suggesting that it is a low-gravity BLAP at the shortest-period end. In particular, the long-term monitoring data reveal that this pulsating star has an unusually large rate of period change, P_dot/P=2.2e-6/yr. Such a significant and positive value challenges its origins from both helium-core pre-white-dwarfs and core helium-burning subdwarfs, but is consistent with that derived from shell helium-burning subdwarfs. The particular pulsation period and unusual rate of period change indicate that TMTS-BLAP-1 is at a short-lived (~10^6 yr) phase of shell-helium ignition before the stable shell-helium burning; in other words, TMTS-BLAP-1 is going through a "Hertzsprung gap" of hot subdwarfs.

Searching for Variable Stars in the Open Cluster NGC 2355 and Its Surrounding Region

We have investigated the variable stars in the field surrounding NGC 2355 based on the time-series photometric observation data. More than 3000 CCD frames were obtained in the V band spread over 13 nights with the Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope. We have detected 88 variable stars, containing 72 new variable stars and 16 known variable stars. By analyzing these light curves, we classified the variable stars as follows: 26 eclipsing binaries, 52 pulsating stars, 4 rotating variables, and 6 unclear type variable stars for which their periods are much longer than the time baseline chosen. Employing Gaia DR2 parallax, kinematics, and photometry, the cluster membership of these variable stars were also analyzed for NGC 2355. In addition to the 11 variable members reported by Cantat-Gaudin et al. (2018), we identify 4 more variable member candidates located at the outer region of NGC 2355 and showed homogeneity in space positions and kinematic properties with the cluster members. The main physical parameters of NGC 2355 estimated from the two-color and color-magnitude diagrams are log(age/yr) = 8.9, E(B - V) = 0.24 mag, and [Fe/H] = - 0.07 dex.

Observations of the Very Young Type Ia Supernova 2019np with Early-excess Emission

Early-time radiative signals from type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important constraints on the explosion mechanism and the progenitor system. We present observations and analysis of SN 2019np, a nearby SN Ia discovered within 1-2 days after the explosion. Follow-up observations were conducted in optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared bands, covering the phases from $\sim-$16.7 days to $\sim$+367.8 days relative to its $B-$band peak luminosity. The photometric and spectral evolutions of SN 2019np resembles the average behavior of normal SNe Ia. The absolute B-band peak magnitude and the post-peak decline rate are $M_{\rm max}(B)=-19.52 \pm 0.47$mag and $Δm_{\rm15}(B) =1.04 \pm 0.04$mag, respectively. No Hydrogen line has been detected in the near-infrared and nebular-phase spectra of SN 2019np. Assuming that the $^{56}$Ni powering the light curve is centrally located, we find that the bolometric light curve of SN 2019np shows a flux excess up to 5.0% in the early phase compared to the radiative diffusion model. Such an extra radiation perhaps suggests the presence of an additional energy source beyond the radioactive decay of central nickel. Comparing the observed color evolution with that predicted by different models such as interactions of SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM)/companion star, a double-detonation explosion from a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD), and surface $^{56}$Ni mixing, the latter one is favored.

Molecular Clump Extraction Algorithm Based on Local Density Clustering

The detection and parametrization of molecular clumps is the first step in studying them. We propose a method based on Local Density Clustering algorithm while physical parameters of those clumps are measured using the Multiple Gaussian Model algorithm. One advantage of applying the Local Density Clustering to the clump detection and segmentation, is the high accuracy under different signal-to-noise levels. The Multiple Gaussian Model is able to deal with overlapping clumps whose parameters can be derived reliably. Using simulation and synthetic data, we have verified that the proposed algorithm could characterize the morphology and flux of molecular clumps accurately. The total flux recovery rate in $^{13}\rm CO$ (J=1-0) line of M16 is measured as 90.2\%. The detection rate and the completeness limit are 81.7\% and 20 K km s$ ^{-1} $ in $^{13}\rm CO$ (J=1-0) line of M16, respectively.

KIC 12602250: A low-amplitude Double-mode $δ$ Scuti star with Amplitude Modulation

We propose for the first time that KIC 12602250 is a low-amplitude radial double-mode $δ$ Scuti star with amplitude modulation. The detailed frequency analysis is given for the light curve of KIC 12602250 which is delivered from the Kepler mission. The Fourier analysis of the long cadence data (i.e. Q0 - Q17, spanning 1471 days) reveals that the variations of the light curve are dominated by the strongest mode with frequency F0 = 11.6141 $\rm{d^{-1}}$, suggesting that KIC 12602250 is a $δ$ Scuti star. The other independent mode F1 = 14.9741 $\rm{d^{-1}}$ is newly detected. The amplitude of the light variations of \target is $\sim$ 0.06 mag, which indicates that this is a low-amplitude $δ$ Scuti star, but the ratio of F0/F1 is estimated as 0.7756 which is typical of HADS, and a slow amplitude growth is detected in F1 and $f_{3}$, which could be due to stellar evolution, suggesting that KIC 12602250 could be a post main sequence $δ$ Scuti which is crossing the instability strip for the first time.

SN 2017fgc: A Fast-Expanding Type Ia Supernova Exploded in Massive Shell Galaxy NGC 474

We present extensive optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the high-velocity (HV) Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2017fgc, covering the phase from $\sim$ 12 d before to $\sim 389$ d after maximum brightness. SN 2017fgc is similar to normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{\rm max}^{B} \approx$ $-19.32 \pm 0.13$ mag and a post-peak decline of $Δm_{15}(B)$ = $1.05 \pm 0.07$ mag. Its peak bolometric luminosity is derived as $1.32 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{43} $erg s$^{-1}$, corresponding to a $^{56}$Ni mass of $0.51 \pm 0.03 M_{\odot}$. The light curves of SN 2017fgc are found to exhibit excess emission in the $UBV$ bands in the early nebular phase and pronounced secondary shoulder/maximum features in the $RrIi$ bands. Its spectral evolution is similar to that of HV SNe Ia, with a maximum-light Si II velocity of $15,000 \pm 150 $km s$^{-1}$ and a post-peak velocity gradient of $\sim$ $120 \pm 10 $km s$^{-1} $d$^{-1}$. The Fe II and Mg II lines blended near 4300 Å and the Fe II, Si II, and Fe III lines blended near 4800 Å are obviously stronger than those of normal SNe Ia. Inspecting a large sample reveals that the strength of the two blends in the spectra, and the secondary peak in the $i/r$-band light curves, are found to be positively correlated with the maximum-light Si II velocity. Such correlations indicate that HV SNe~Ia may experience more complete burning in the ejecta and/or that their progenitors have higher metallicity. Examining the birthplace environment of SN 2017fgc suggests that it likely arose from a stellar environment with young and high-metallicity populations.
