Principles and Practices of Large-Scale Code Analysis at Ant Group: A Data- and Logic-Oriented Approach

Large-scale software development requires dynamic and multifaceted static code analysis that extends beyond the capabilities of traditional tools. Existing tools like CodeQL lack cross-language analysis capabilities and can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. We present CodeFuse-Query, a data system tailored for large-scale code analysis. First, CodeFuse-Query adopts a Logic-Oriented Computation Design, employing Datalog with a two-tiered schema, COREF, to convert source code into data facts, and Godel to express complex analysis tasks in logical terms. Furthermore, CodeFuse-Query adopts a Domain-Optimized System Design. This approach optimizes resource utilization, prioritizes data reusability, applies incremental code extraction, and introduces task-type characteristics specifically for code changes, underscoring its domain-optimized design. We present empirical results demonstrating CodeFuse-Query's robustness, scalability, and efficiency in large-scale real-world scenarios at Ant Group, where it serves as a core static analysis infrastructure. Deployed in production environments, CodeFuse-Query processes up to 10 billion lines of code daily across more than 300,000 distinct analysis tasks. CodeFuse-Query has been open-sourced.

Combining Symbolic Execution and Model Checking to Verify MPI Programs

Message passing is the standard paradigm of programming in high-performance computing. However, verifying Message Passing Interface (MPI) programs is challenging, due to the complex program features (such as non-determinism and non-blocking operations). In this work, we present MPI symbolic verifier (MPI-SV), the first symbolic execution based tool for automatically verifying MPI programs with non-blocking operations. MPI-SV combines symbolic execution and model checking in a synergistic way to tackle the challenges in MPI program verification. The synergy improves the scalability and enlarges the scope of verifiable properties. We have implemented MPI-SV (footnote: https://mpi-sv.github.io) and evaluated it with 111 real-world MPI verification tasks. The pure symbolic execution-based technique successfully verifies 61 out of the 111 tasks (55\%) within one hour, while in comparison, MPI-SV verifies 100 tasks (90\%). On average, compared with pure symbolic execution, MPI-SV achieves 19x speedups on verifying the satisfaction of the critical property and 5x speedups on finding violations.

MPISE: Symbolic Execution of MPI Programs

Message Passing Interfaces (MPI) plays an important role in parallel computing. Many parallel applications are implemented as MPI programs. The existing methods of bug detection for MPI programs have the shortage of providing both input and non-determinism coverage, leading to missed bugs. In this paper, we employ symbolic execution to ensure the input coverage, and propose an on-the-fly schedule algorithm to reduce the interleaving explorations for non-determinism coverage, while ensuring the soundness and completeness. We have implemented our approach as a tool, called MPISE, which can automatically detect the deadlock and runtime bugs in MPI programs. The results of the experiments on benchmark programs and real world MPI programs indicate that MPISE finds bugs effectively and efficiently. In addition, our tool also provides diagnostic information and replay mechanism to help understanding bugs.

Counterexample-Preserving Reduction for Symbolic Model Checking

The cost of LTL model checking is highly sensitive to the length of the formula under verification. We observe that, under some specific conditions, the input LTL formula can be reduced to an easier-to-handle one before model checking. In our reduction, these two formulae need not to be logically equivalent, but they share the same counterexample set w.r.t the model. In the case that the model is symbolically represented, the condition enabling such reduction can be detected with a lightweight effort (e.g., with SAT-solving). In this paper, we tentatively name such technique "Counterexample-Preserving Reduction" (CePRe for short), and finally the proposed technquie is experimentally evaluated by adapting NuSMV.
