Spherical Antenna Arrays for Future Communications: Principles, Applications, and Research Directions

With the development of 6G technologies, traditional uniform linear arrays (ULAs) and uniform planar arrays (UPAs) can hardly meet the demands of three-dimensional (3D) full-space coverage and high angular resolution. Spherical antenna arrays (SAAs), with elements uniformly distributed on a spherical surface, provide an effective solution. This article analyzes the issues of traditional arrays, summarizes the advantages and typical structures of SAAs, discusses their potential application scenarios, and verifies their superiority over UPAs via a case study. Finally, key technical challenges and corresponding research directions of SAAs are identified, providing a reference for their research and application in future wireless communications.

Electric field switching of altermagnetic spin-splitting in multiferroic skyrmions

Magnetic skyrmions are localized magnetic structures that retain their shape and stability over time, thanks to their topological nature. Recent theoretical and experimental progress has laid the groundwork for understanding magnetic skyrmions characterized by negligible net magnetization and ultrafast dynamics. Notably, skyrmions emerging in materials with altermagnetism, a novel magnetic phase featuring lifted Kramers degeneracy-have remained unreported until now. In this study, we demonstrate that BiFeO3, a multiferroic renowned for its strong coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism, can transit from a spin cycloid to a Neel-type skyrmion under antidamping spin-orbit torque at room temperature. Strikingly, the altermagnetic spin splitting within BiFeO3 skyrmion can be reversed through the application of an electric field, revealed via the Circular photogalvanic effect. This quasiparticle, which possesses a neutral topological charge, holds substantial promise for diverse applications-most notably, enabling the development of unconventional computing systems with low power consumption and magnetoelectric controllability.

Theoretical and Empirical Study of Spatial Power Focusing Effect for Sparse Arrays at Terahertz Band

This work investigates the spatial power focusing effect for large-scale sparse arrays at terahertz (THz) band, combining theoretical analysis with experimental validation. Specifically, based on a Green's function channel model, we analyze the power distribution along the $z$-axis, deriving a closed-form expression to characterize the focusing effect. Furthermore, the factors influencing the focusing effect, including phase noise and positional deviations, are theoretically analyzed and numerically simulated. Finally, a 300 GHz measurement platform based on a vector network analyzer (VNA) is constructed for experimental validation. The measurement results demonstrate close consistence with theoretical simulation results, confirming the spatial power focusing effect for sparse arrays.

Exploring the Advantages of Sparse Arrays in Near-Field XL-MIMO Systems: Beam Analysis and EDoF Function

This paper investigates near-field XL-MIMO systems with sparse uniform planar arrays (UPAs). Based on the Green's function-based channel model, the paper derives closed-form expressions for the signal beam power when the distance coordinate or the angular coordinates varies with respective to the focused position. Based on that, closed-form expressions for the lobe length and the suppressing ratio are obtained, indicating that both the distance-focusing property and the grating lobe behavior can be enhanced as the focal distance decreases or the antenna spacing increases. Furthermore, the paper introduces a crucial constraint on system parameters, under which effective degrees-of-freedom (EDoF) of XL-MIMO systems with sparse UPAs can be precisely estimated. Then, the paper proposes an algorithm to obtain a closed-form expression, which can estimate EDoF with high accuracy and low computational complexity. The numerical results verifies the correctness of the main results of this paper.

Observation of ferron transport in ferroelectrics

Ferroelectrics feature spontaneous electric dipolar order reconfigurable via electric fields. Recent theoretical studies of the collective excitations of this electric dipolar order give rise to the hope that "ferron" quasiparticles may complement the magnons of magnetic materials in information and heat management technologies. Yet direct experimental evidence of ferron transport remains elusive. Here we demonstrate efficient ferron injection and detection enabled by ferromagnetic metal contacts, achieving nonlocal signal transmission over micrometer distances in a prototypical ferroelectric PMN-PT. The transmission efficiency can be switched by external magnetic fields that couple to the contacts and gate electric fields that control the ferron excitations. Ferron-based devices open new power saving strategies that employ ferroelectric materials in a future sustainable information society.

Spin frustration and unconventional spin twisting state in van der Waals ferromagnet/antiferromagnet heterostructures

Atomically flat surfaces of van der Waals (vdW) materials pave an avenue for addressing a long-standing fundamental issue of how a perfectly compensated antiferromagnet (AFM) surface frustrates a ferromagnetic (FM) overlayer in FM/AFM heterostructures. By revealing the AFM and FM spin structures separately in vdW Fe5GeTe2/NiPS3 heterostructures, we find that C-type in-plane AFM NiPS3 develops three equivalent AFM domains which are robust against external magnetic field and magnetic coupling with Fe5GeTe2. Consequently, spin frustration at the Fe5GeTe2/NiPS3 interface was shown to develop a perpendicular Fe5GeTe2 magnetization in the interfacial region that switches separately from the bulk of the Fe5GeTe2 magnetizations. In particular, we discover an unconventional spin twisting state that the Fe5GeTe2 spins twist from perpendicular direction near the interface to in-plane direction away from the interface in Fe5GeTe2/NiPS3. Our finding of the twisting spin texture is a unique property of spin frustration in van der Waals magnetic heterostructures.

Orthogonal Geometry of Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Enabled by Magnetization Multipole of Berry Curvature

The Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) is a fundamental tool in magnetometry, pivotal for advancing research in optics, magnetism, and spintronics as a direct probe of magnetization. Traditional MOKE measurements primarily detect the magnetization components parallel to the Poynting vector, which can only access the magnitude but not the direction of the orthogonal component. In this study, we introduce an orthogonal MOKE geometry in which the Kerr signal detects both the magnitude and direction of the magnetization component perpendicular to the Poynting vector. We demonstrate the broad applicability of this orthogonal geometry through the MOKE measurements in cubic ferromagnets and van der Waals ferromagnet. We theoretically show that the orthogonal MOKE geometry is enabled by the multipolar structure of Berry curvature in the magnetization space, which generally induces a Voigt vector orthogonal to the magnetization, thereby accounting for the unique magnetization angle dependence distinct from conventional MOKE. The establishment of the orthogonal MOKE geometry not only introduces a new paradigm for magneto-optical measurements but also provides a framework for exploring the magnetization multipoles of Berry curvature across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Effective DoF-Oriented Optimal Antenna Spacing in Near-Field XL-MIMO Systems

This letter investigates the optimal antenna spacing for a near-field XL-MIMO communication system from the perspective of the array gain. Specifically, using the Green's function-based channel model, the letter analyzes the channel capacity, which is related to the effective degrees-of-freedom (EDoF). Then, the letter further investigates the applicability of two EDoF estimation methods. To increase EDoF, this letter focuses on analyzing the impact of antenna spacing. Furthermore, from the perspective of the array gain, the letter derives an approximate closed-form expression of the optimal antenna spacing, at which EDoF is maximized and the array gain at the antenna nearest to the focused antenna of the transmit array becomes zero. Finally, numerical results verify the main results of this letter.

Performance Analysis on RIS-Aided Wideband Massive MIMO OFDM Systems with Low-Resolution ADCs

This paper investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Frequency-selective Rician fading channels are considered, and the OFDM data transmission process is presented in time domain. This paper derives the closed-form approximate expression of the uplink achievable rate, based on which the asymptotic system performance is analyzed when the number of the antennas at the base station and the number of reflecting elements at the RIS grow to infinity. Besides, the power scaling laws of the considered system are revealed to provide energy-saving insights. Furthermore, this paper proposes a gradient ascent-based algorithm to design the phase shifts of the RIS for maximizing the minimum user rate. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the correctness of analytical conclusions and draw insights.

Electrical 180o switching of Néel vector in spin-splitting antiferromagnet

Antiferromagnetic spintronics have attracted wide attention due to its great potential in constructing ultra-dense and ultra-fast antiferromagnetic memory that suits modern high-performance information technology. The electrical 180o switching of Néel vector is a long-term goal for developing electrical-controllable antiferromagnetic memory with opposite Néel vectors as binary "0" and "1". However, the state-of-art antiferromagnetic switching mechanisms have long been limited for 90o or 120o switching of Néel vector, which unavoidably require multiple writing channels that contradicts ultra-dense integration. Here, we propose a deterministic switching mechanism based on spin-orbit torque with asymmetric energy barrier, and experimentally achieve electrical 180o switching of spin-splitting antiferromagnet Mn5Si3. Such a 180o switching is read out by the Néel vector-induced anomalous Hall effect. Based on our writing and readout methods, we fabricate an antiferromagnet device with electrical-controllable high and low resistance states that accomplishes robust write and read cycles. Besides fundamental advance, our work promotes practical spin-splitting antiferromagnetic devices based on spin-splitting antiferromagnet.

Persistent anisotropy of the spin cycloid in BiFeO3 through ferroelectric switching

A key challenge in antiferromagnetic spintronics is the control of spin configuration on nanometer scales applicable to solid-state technologies. Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is a multiferroic material that exhibits both ferroelectricity and canted antiferromagnetism at room temperature, making it a unique candidate in the development of electric-field controllable magnetic devices. The magnetic moments in BiFeO3 are arranged into a spin cycloid, resulting in unique magnetic properties which are tied to the ferroelectric order. Previous understanding of this coupling has relied on average, mesoscale measurements to infer behavior. Using nitrogen vacancy-based diamond magnetometry, we show that the spin cycloid can be deterministically controlled with an electric field. The energy landscape of the cycloid is shaped by both the ferroelectric degree of freedom and strain-induced anisotropy, restricting the magnetization changes to specific ferroelectric switching events. This study provides understanding of the antiferromagnetic texture in BiFeO3 and paves new avenues for designing magnetic textures and spintronic devices.

Antiferromagnetic magnonic charge current generation via ultrafast optical excitation

Néel spin-orbit torque allows a charge current pulse to efficiently manipulate the Néel vector in antiferromagnets, which offers a unique opportunity for ultrahigh density information storage with high speed. However, the reciprocal process of Néel spin-orbit torque, the generation of ultrafast charge current in antiferromagnets has not been demonstrated. Here, we report the experimental observation of charge current generation in antiferromagnetic metallic Mn2Au thin films using ultrafast optical excitation. The ultrafast laser pulse excites antiferromagnetic magnons, resulting in instantaneous non-equilibrium spin polarization at the antiferromagnetic spin sublattices with broken spatial symmetry. Then the charge current is generated directly via spin-orbit fields at the two sublattices, which is termed as the reciprocal phenomenon of Néel spin-orbit torque, and the associated THz emission can be detected at room temperature. Besides the fundamental significance on the Onsager reciprocity, the observed magnonic charge current generation in antiferromagnet would advance the development of antiferromagnetic THz emitter.

Manipulating chiral-spin transport with ferroelectric polarization

A collective excitation of the spin structure in a magnetic insulator can transmit spin-angular momentum with negligible dissipation. This quantum of a spin wave, introduced more than nine decades ago, has always been manipulated through magnetic dipoles, (i.e., timereversal symmetry). Here, we report the experimental observation of chiral-spin transport in multiferroic BiFeO3, where the spin transport is controlled by reversing the ferroelectric polarization (i.e., spatial inversion symmetry). The ferroelectrically controlled magnons produce an unprecedented ratio of up to 18% rectification at room temperature. The spin torque that the magnons in BiFeO3 carry can be used to efficiently switch the magnetization of adja-cent magnets, with a spin-torque efficiency being comparable to the spin Hall effect in heavy metals. Utilizing such a controllable magnon generation and transmission in BiFeO3, an alloxide, energy-scalable logic is demonstrated composed of spin-orbit injection, detection, and magnetoelectric control. This observation opens a new chapter of multiferroic magnons and paves an alternative pathway towards low-dissipation nanoelectronics.

Performance Analysis and Optimization for RIS-Assisted Multi-User Massive MIMO Systems with Imperfect Hardware

The paper studies a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multi-user uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with imperfect hardware. At the RIS, the paper considers phase noise, while at the base station, the paper takes into consideration the radio frequency impairments and low-resolution analog-to-digital converters. The paper derives approximate expressions for the ergodic achievable rate in closed forms under Rician fading channels. For the cases of infinite numbers of antennas and infinite numbers of reflecting elements, asymptotic data rates are derived to provide new design insights. The derived power scaling laws indicate that while guaranteeing a required system performance, the transmit power of the users can be scaled down at most by the factor 1/M when M goes infinite, or by the factor 1/(MN) when M and N go infinite, where M is the number of antennas and N is the number of the reflecting units. Furthermore, an optimization algorithm is proposed based on the genetic algorithm to solve the phase shift optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the sum rate of the system. Additionally, the optimization problem with discrete phase shifts is considered. Finally, numerical results are provided to validate the correctness of the analytical results.

Observation of spin splitting torque in a collinear antiferromagnet RuO2

Current-induced spin torques provide efficient data writing approaches for magnetic memories. Recently, the spin splitting torque (SST) was theoretically predicted (R. González-Hernández et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 127701 (2021)), which combines advantages of conventional spin transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) as well as enables controllable spin polarization. Here we provide the experimental evidence of SST in collinear antiferromagnet RuO2 films. The spin current direction is found to be correlated to the crystal orientation of RuO2 and the spin polarization direction is dependent on (parallel to) the Néel vector. These features are quite characteristic for the predicted SST. Our finding not only present a new member for the spin torques besides traditional STT and SOT, but also proposes a promising spin source RuO2 for spintronics.

Multi-Pair Two-Way Massive MIMO DF Relaying Over Rician Fading Channels Under Imperfect CSI

Imperfect channel state information is considered in the context of maximum-ratio processing. Closedform expressions are derived for approximating the sum spectral efficiency (SE) of the system. Moreover, we obtain the powerscaling laws at the users and the relay station to satisfy a certain SE requirement in three typical scenarios. Finally, simulations validate the accuracy of the derived results.

Current-induced in-plane magnetization switching in biaxial ferrimagnetic insulator

Ferrimagnetic insulators (FiMI) have been intensively used in microwave and magneto-optical devices as well as spin caloritronics, where their magnetization direction plays a fundamental role on the device performance. The magnetization is generally switched by applying external magnetic fields. Here we investigate current-induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of the magnetization in Y3Fe5O12 (YIG)/Pt bilayers with in-plane magnetic anisotropy, where the switching is detected by spin Hall magnetoresistance. Reversible switching is found at room temperature for a threshold current density of 10^7 A cm^-2. The YIG sublattices with antiparallel and unequal magnetic moments are aligned parallel or antiparallel to the direction of current pulses, which is consistent to the Neel order switching in antiferromagnetic system. It is proposed that such a switching behavior may be triggered by the antidamping-torque acting on the two antiparallel sublattices of FiMI. Our finding not only broadens the magnetization switching by electrical means and promotes the understanding of magnetization switching, but also paves the way for all-electrically modulated microwave devices and spin caloritronics with low power consumption.

Electric field switching of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of an antiferromagnet

Electric field control of magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnets has been intensively pursued in spintronics to achieve efficient memory and computing devices with low energy consumption. Compared with ferromagnets, antiferromagnets hold huge potential in high-density information storage for their ultrafast spin dynamics and vanishingly small stray field. However, the switching of magnetic anisotropy of antiferromagnets via electric field remains elusive. Here we use ferroelastic strain from piezoelectric materials to switch the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and the Néel order reversibly in antiferromagnetic Mn2Au films with an electric field of only a few kV/cm at room temperature. Owing to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, a ratchet-like switching behavior driven by the Néel spin-orbit torque is observed in the Mn2Au, which can be reversed by electric fields.
