Membraneless organelles formed by liquid-liquid phase separation increase bacterial fitness

Liquid-liquid phase separation is emerging as a crucial phenomenon in several fundamental cell processes. A range of eukaryotic systems exhibit liquid condensates. However, their function in bacteria, which in general lack membrane-bound compartments, remains less clear. Here, we used high-resolution optical microscopy to observe single bacterial aggresomes, nanostructured intracellular assemblies of proteins, to undercover their role in cell stress. We find that proteins inside aggresomes are mobile and undergo dynamic turnover, consistent with a liquid state. Our observations are in quantitative agreement with phase-separated liquid droplet formation driven by interacting proteins under thermal equilibrium that nucleate following diffusive collisions in the cytoplasm. We have discovered aggresomes in multiple species of bacteria, and show that these emergent, metastable liquid-structured protein assemblies increase bacterial fitness by enabling cells to tolerate environmental stresses.

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Dysarthric Speech Detection via Domain Adversarial Training and Mutual Information Minimization

Dysarthric speech detection (DSD) systems aim to detect characteristics of the neuromotor disorder from speech. Such systems are particularly susceptible to domain mismatch where the training and testing data come from the source and target domains respectively, but the two domains may differ in terms of speech stimuli, disease etiology, etc. It is hard to acquire labelled data in the target domain, due to high costs of annotating sizeable datasets. This paper makes a first attempt to formulate cross-domain DSD as an unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) problem. We use labelled source-domain data and unlabelled target-domain data, and propose a multi-task learning strategy, including dysarthria presence classification (DPC), domain adversarial training (DAT) and mutual information minimization (MIM), which aim to learn dysarthria-discriminative and domain-invariant biomarker embeddings. Specifically, DPC helps biomarker embeddings capture critical indicators of dysarthria; DAT forces biomarker embeddings to be indistinguishable in source and target domains; and MIM further reduces the correlation between biomarker embeddings and domain-related cues. By treating the UASPEECH and TORGO corpora respectively as the source and target domains, experiments show that the incorporation of UDA attains absolute increases of 22.2% and 20.0% respectively in utterance-level weighted average recall and speaker-level accuracy.

VQMIVC: Vector Quantization and Mutual Information-Based Unsupervised Speech Representation Disentanglement for One-shot Voice Conversion

One-shot voice conversion (VC), which performs conversion across arbitrary speakers with only a single target-speaker utterance for reference, can be effectively achieved by speech representation disentanglement. Existing work generally ignores the correlation between different speech representations during training, which causes leakage of content information into the speaker representation and thus degrades VC performance. To alleviate this issue, we employ vector quantization (VQ) for content encoding and introduce mutual information (MI) as the correlation metric during training, to achieve proper disentanglement of content, speaker and pitch representations, by reducing their inter-dependencies in an unsupervised manner. Experimental results reflect the superiority of the proposed method in learning effective disentangled speech representations for retaining source linguistic content and intonation variations, while capturing target speaker characteristics. In doing so, the proposed approach achieves higher speech naturalness and speaker similarity than current state-of-the-art one-shot VC systems. Our code, pre-trained models and demo are available at https://github.com/Wendison/VQMIVC.

Multi-scale Neural ODEs for 3D Medical Image Registration

Image registration plays an important role in medical image analysis. Conventional optimization based methods provide an accurate estimation due to the iterative process at the cost of expensive computation. Deep learning methods such as learn-to-map are much faster but either iterative or coarse-to-fine approach is required to improve accuracy for handling large motions. In this work, we proposed to learn a registration optimizer via a multi-scale neural ODE model. The inference consists of iterative gradient updates similar to a conventional gradient descent optimizer but in a much faster way, because the neural ODE learns from the training data to adapt the gradient efficiently at each iteration. Furthermore, we proposed to learn a modal-independent similarity metric to address image appearance variations across different image contrasts. We performed evaluations through extensive experiments in the context of multi-contrast 3D MR images from both public and private data sources and demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed methods.

Quantum error as an emergent magnetic field

We investigate the effect of quantum errors on a monitored Brownian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model featuring a measurement-induced phase transition that can be understood as a symmetry-breaking transition of an effective $Z_4$ magnet in the replica space. The errors describe the loss of information about the measurement outcomes and are applied during the non-unitary evolution or at the end of the evolution. In the former case, we find that this error can be mapped to an emergent magnetic field in the $Z_4$ magnet, and as a consequence, the symmetry is explicitly broken independent of the measurement rate. Rényi entropies computed by twisting boundary conditions now generate domain walls even in the would-be symmetric phase at a high measurement rate. The entropy is therefore volume-law irrespective of the measurement rate. In the latter case, the error-induced magnetic field only exists near the boundary of the magnet. Varying the magnetic field leads to a pinning transition of domain walls, corresponding to error threshold of the quantum code prepared by the non-unitary SYK dynamics.

Automatic Construction of Sememe Knowledge Bases via Dictionaries

A sememe is defined as the minimum semantic unit in linguistics. Sememe knowledge bases (SKBs), which comprise words annotated with sememes, enable sememes to be applied to natural language processing. So far a large body of research has showcased the unique advantages and effectiveness of SKBs in various tasks. However, most languages have no SKBs, and manual construction of SKBs is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To tackle this challenge, we propose a simple and fully automatic method of building an SKB via an existing dictionary. We use this method to build an English SKB and a French SKB, and conduct comprehensive evaluations from both intrinsic and extrinsic perspectives. Experimental results demonstrate that the automatically built English SKB is even superior to HowNet, the most widely used SKB that takes decades to build manually. And both the English and French SKBs can bring obvious performance enhancement in multiple downstream tasks. All the code and data of this paper (except the copyrighted dictionaries) can be obtained at https://github.com/thunlp/DictSKB.

Leaderless Consensus of a Hierarchical Cyber-Physical System

This paper models a class of hierarchical cyber-physical systems and studies its associated consensus problem. The model has a pyramid structure, which reflects many realistic natural or human systems. By analyzing the spectrum of the coupling matrix, it is shown that all nodes in the physical layer can reach a consensus based on the proposed distributed protocols without interlayer delays. Then, the result is extended to the case with interlayer delays. A necessary and sufficient condition for consensus-seeking is derived from the frequency domain perspective, which describes a permissible range of the delay. Finally, the application of the proposed model in the power-sharing problem is simulated to demonstrate the effectiveness and significance of the analytic results.

Cardiac Functional Analysis with Cine MRI via Deep Learning Reconstruction

Retrospectively gated cine (retro-cine) MRI is the clinical standard for cardiac functional analysis. Deep learning (DL) based methods have been proposed for the reconstruction of highly undersampled MRI data and show superior image quality and magnitude faster reconstruction time than CS-based methods. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether DL reconstruction is suitable for cardiac function analysis. To address this question, in this study we evaluate and compare the cardiac functional values (EDV, ESV and EF for LV and RV, respectively) obtained from highly accelerated MRI acquisition using DL based reconstruction algorithm (DL-cine) with values from CS-cine and conventional retro-cine. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to evaluate the cine MRI with deep learning reconstruction for cardiac function analysis and compare it with other conventional methods. The cardiac functional values obtained from cine MRI with deep learning reconstruction are consistent with values from clinical standard retro-cine MRI.

Accelerating 3D MULTIPLEX MRI Reconstruction with Deep Learning

Multi-contrast MRI images provide complementary contrast information about the characteristics of anatomical structures and are commonly used in clinical practice. Recently, a multi-flip-angle (FA) and multi-echo GRE method (MULTIPLEX MRI) has been developed to simultaneously acquire multiple parametric images with just one single scan. However, it poses two challenges for MULTIPLEX to be used in the 3D high-resolution setting: a relatively long scan time and the huge amount of 3D multi-contrast data for reconstruction. Currently, no DL based method has been proposed for 3D MULTIPLEX data reconstruction. We propose a deep learning framework for undersampled 3D MRI data reconstruction and apply it to MULTIPLEX MRI. The proposed deep learning method shows good performance in image quality and reconstruction time.

Quantum criticality in the nonunitary dynamics of $(2+1)$-dimensional free fermions

We explore the nonunitary dynamics of $(2+1)$-dimensional free fermions and show that the obtained steady state is critical regardless the strength of the nonunitary evolution. Numerical results indicate that the entanglement entropy has a logarithmic violation of the area-law and the mutual information between two distant regions decays as a power-law function. In particular, we provide an interpretation of these scaling behaviors in terms of a simple quasiparticle pair picture. In addition, we study the dynamics of the correlation function and demonstrate that this system has dynamical exponent $z=1$. We further demonstrate the dynamics of the correlation function can be well captured by a classical nonlinear master equation. Our method opens a door to a vast number of nonunitary random dynamics in free fermions and can be generalized to any dimensions.

Extract then Distill: Efficient and Effective Task-Agnostic BERT Distillation

Task-agnostic knowledge distillation, a teacher-student framework, has been proved effective for BERT compression. Although achieving promising results on NLP tasks, it requires enormous computational resources. In this paper, we propose Extract Then Distill (ETD), a generic and flexible strategy to reuse the teacher's parameters for efficient and effective task-agnostic distillation, which can be applied to students of any size. Specifically, we introduce two variants of ETD, ETD-Rand and ETD-Impt, which extract the teacher's parameters in a random manner and by following an importance metric respectively. In this way, the student has already acquired some knowledge at the beginning of the distillation process, which makes the distillation process converge faster. We demonstrate the effectiveness of ETD on the GLUE benchmark and SQuAD. The experimental results show that: (1) compared with the baseline without an ETD strategy, ETD can save 70\% of computation cost. Moreover, it achieves better results than the baseline when using the same computing resource. (2) ETD is generic and has been proven effective for different distillation methods (e.g., TinyBERT and MiniLM) and students of different sizes. The source code will be publicly available upon publication.

LightMBERT: A Simple Yet Effective Method for Multilingual BERT Distillation

The multilingual pre-trained language models (e.g, mBERT, XLM and XLM-R) have shown impressive performance on cross-lingual natural language understanding tasks. However, these models are computationally intensive and difficult to be deployed on resource-restricted devices. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective distillation method (LightMBERT) for transferring the cross-lingual generalization ability of the multilingual BERT to a small student model. The experiment results empirically demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of LightMBERT, which is significantly better than the baselines and performs comparable to the teacher mBERT.

Group-Skeleton-Based Human Action Recognition in Complex Events

Human action recognition as an important application of computer vision has been studied for decades. Among various approaches, skeleton-based methods recently attract increasing attention due to their robust and superior performance. However, existing skeleton-based methods ignore the potential action relationships between different persons, while the action of a person is highly likely to be impacted by another person especially in complex events. In this paper, we propose a novel group-skeleton-based human action recognition method in complex events. This method first utilizes multi-scale spatial-temporal graph convolutional networks (MS-G3Ds) to extract skeleton features from multiple persons. In addition to the traditional key point coordinates, we also input the key point speed values to the networks for better performance. Then we use multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) to embed the distance values between the reference person and other persons into the extracted features. Lastly, all the features are fed into another MS-G3D for feature fusion and classification. For avoiding class imbalance problems, the networks are trained with a focal loss. The proposed algorithm is also our solution for the Large-scale Human-centric Video Analysis in Complex Events Challenge. Results on the HiEve dataset show that our method can give superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art methods.

Hybrid Wannier Chern bands in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene and the quantized anomalous Hall effect

We propose a method for studying the strong interaction regimes in twisted bilayer graphene using hybrid Wannier functions, that are Wannier-like in one direction and Bloch-like in the other. We focus on the active bands as given by the continuum model proposed by Bistritzer and MacDonald, and discuss the properties of corresponding hybrid Wannier functions. We then employ the method for a study of the fillings of $\pm 3$ electrons per moiré cell using the Hartree-Fock method. We discuss at length different regimes under which a quantized anomalous Hall effect is seen in these two fillings.

Enhanced Coalbed Methane Extraction by Geothermal Stimulation in Deep Coal Mines: An Appraisal

Coalbed methane embedded in coal seams, is an unconventional energy resource as well as a hazardous gas existing in mining industries, which attracts lots of global attention. As the largest coal producer, the mining industry in China had to deal with many hazards induced by methane for decades. To solve this issue, underground methane extraction is commonly used in underground coal mines. However, underground methane extraction is hampered by low production rate and low efficiency because of slow gas emission from coal primarily controlled by gas desorption and permeability. It is well known that temperature has a great impact on gas sorption. The higher the temperature the larger the desorption rate. As the depth of coal mines increases beyond 1000m coal mines suffer elevated air temperatures caused by the natural geothermal gradient. The elevated temperature in such mines provides a potential economical way for geothermal energy extraction and utilization in deep coal mines which can largely cut the expenses of installation and operation maintenance. Therefore, a novel method is proposed to enhance underground methane extraction by deep heat stimulation. This paper mainly presents an assessment of previous and ongoing research in the related field and provides a first feasibility analysis of this method applied in the underground environment. The technique proposed in this early appraisal is deemed significant for coalbed methane drainage enhancing the productivity of deep coal mines by geothermal technology and can also be extended for many applications in relevant areas such as shale gas, and tight oil.

Non-unitary dynamics of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev chain

We construct a series of one-dimensional non-unitary dynamics consisting of both unitary and imaginary evolutions based on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. Starting from a short-range entangled state, we analyze the entanglement dynamics using the path integral formalism in the large $N$ limit. Among all the results that we obtain, two of them are particularly interesting: (1) By varying the strength of the imaginary evolution, the interacting model exhibits a first order phase transition from the highly entangled volume law phase to an area law phase; (2) The one-dimensional free fermion model displays an extensive critical regime with emergent two-dimensional conformal symmetry.

Measurement-induced phase transitions in quantum automaton circuits

We study the entanglement dynamics in a generic quantum automaton circuit subjected to projective measurements. We design an efficient algorithm which not only allows us to perform large scale simulation for the Rényi entropy but also provides a physical picture for the entanglement dynamics, which can be interpreted in terms of a classical bit-string model which belongs to the directed percolation universality class. We study the purification dynamics of a state formed by EPR pairs, and the growth of entanglement starting from a product state. In both cases, we verify numerically that the dynamics is in the universality class of classical directed percolation.

Robust mixture regression with Exponential Power distribution

Assuming an exponential power distribution is one way to deal with outliers in regression and clustering, which can increase the robustness of the analysis. Gaussian distribution is a special case of an exponential distribution. And an exponential power distribution can be viewed as a scale mixture of normal distributions. Thus, model selection methods developed for the Gaussian mixture model can be easily extended for the exponential power mixture model. Moreover, Gaussian mixture models tend to select more components than exponential power mixture models in real-world cases, which means exponential power mixture models are easier to interpret. In this paper, We develop analyses for mixture regression models when the errors are assumed to follow an exponential power distribution. It will be robust to outliers, and model selection for it is easy to implement.
