JikesRVM: Internal Mechanisms Study and Garbage Collection with MMTk

High Level Language Virtual Machines is a core topic of interest for the researchers who are into virtual execution environments. As an open source virtual machine released to 16 universities, as early as 2001, Jikes RVM has been a major drive for many researches. While working on this project, we studied the JIT compilation of Jikes RVM as well as the Garbage Collection (GC) which is handled by the Memory Management Toolkit (MMTk), a part of the Jikes RVM. We also studied the Compressor Mark-Compact Collector algorithm and implemented it for MMTk. We have also implemented a micro-benchmark for the GC algorithms in Java, named "XPDBench", for benchmarking the implementations.

Many-body Localization Transition in Rokhsar-Kivelson-type wave functions

We construct a family of many-body wave functions to study the many-body localization phase transition. The wave functions have a Rokhsar-Kivelson form, in which the weight for the configurations are chosen from the Gibbs weights of a classical spin glass model, known as the Random Energy Model, multiplied by a random sign structure to represent a highly excited state. These wave functions show a phase transition into an MBL phase. In addition, we see three regimes of entanglement scaling with subsystem size: scaling with entanglement corresponding to an infinite temperature thermal phase, constant scaling, and a sub-extensive scaling between these limits. Near the phase transition point, the fluctuations of the Rényi entropies are non-Gaussian. We find that Rényi entropies with different Rényi index transition into the MBL phase at different points and have different scaling behavior, suggesting a multifractal behavior.

Dynamic Clustering in Suspension of Motile Bacteria

Bacteria suspension exhibits a wide range of collective phenomena arising from interactions between individual cells. Here we show Serratia marcescens cells near an air-liquid interface spontaneously aggregate into dynamic clusters through surface-mediated hydrodynamic interactions. These long-lived clusters translate randomly and rotate in the counter-clockwise direction; they continuously evolve, merge with others and split into smaller ones. Measurements indicate that long-ranged hydrodynamic interactions have strong influences on cluster properties. Bacterial clusters change material and fluid transport near the interface and hence may have environmental and biological consequences.

On a geometric realization of C$^*$-algebras

Further to the functional representations of C$^*$-algebras proposed by R. Cirelli, A. Mania and L. Pizzocchero, we consider in this article the uniform Kähler bundle (in short, UKB) description of some C$^*$-algebraic subjects. In particular, we obtain an one-to-one correspondence between closed ideals of a C$^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and full uniform Kähler sub bundles over open subsets of the base space of the UKB associated with $\mathcal{A}$. In addition, we will present a geometric description of the pure state space of hereditary C$^*$-subalgebras and show that that if $\mathcal{B}$ is a hereditary C$^*$-subalgebra of $\mathcal{A}$, the UKB of $\mathcal{B}$ is a kind of Kähler subbundle of the UKB of $\mathcal{A}$. As a simple example, we consider hereditary C$^*$-subalgebras of the C$^*$-algebra of compact operators on a Hilbert space. Finally, we remark that hereditary C$^*$-subalgebras also naturally can be characterized as uniform holomorphic Hilbert subbundles.

Property $T$ for general locally compact quantum groups

In this short article, we obtained some equivalent formulations of property $T$ for a general locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$, in terms of the full quantum group $C^*$-algebras $C_0^\mathrm{u}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ and the $*$-representation of $C_0^\mathrm{u}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ associated with the trivial unitary corepresentation (that generalize the corresponding results for locally compact groups). Moreover, if $\mathbb{G}$ is of Kac type, we show that $\mathbb{G}$ has property $T$ if and only if every finite dimensional irreducible $*$-representation of $C_0^\mathrm{u}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ is an isolated point in the spectrum of $C_0^\mathrm{u}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ (this also generalizes the corresponding locally compact group result). In addition, we give a way to construct property $T$ discrete quantum groups using bicrossed products.

A property for locally convex $^*$-algebras related to Property $(T)$ and character amenability

For a locally convex $^*$-algebra $A$ equipped with a fixed continuous $^*$-character $\varepsilon$, we define a cohomological property, called property $(FH)$, which is similar to character amenability. Let $C_c(G)$ be the space of continuous functions on a second countable locally compact group $G$ with compact supports, equipped with the convolution $^*$-algebra structure and a certain inductive topology. We show that $(C_c(G), \varepsilon_G)$ has property $(FH)$ if and only if $G$ has property $(T)$. On the other hand, many Banach algebras equipped with canonical characters have property $(FH)$ (e.g., those defined by a nice locally compact quantum group). Furthermore, through our studies on both property $(FH)$ and character amenablility, we obtain characterizations of property $(T)$, amenability and compactness of $G$ in terms of the vanishing of one-sided cohomology of certain topological algebras, as well as in terms of fixed point properties. These characterizations can be regarded as analogues of one another. Moreover, we show that $G$ is compact if and only if the normed algebra $\big\{f\in C_c(G): \int_G f(t)dt =0\big\}$ (under $\|\cdot\|_{L^1(G)}$) admits a bounded approximate identity with the supports of all its elements being contained in a common compact set.

Electron pairing in the presence of incipient bands in iron-based superconductors

Recent experiments on certain Fe-based superconductors have hinted at a role for paired electrons in "incipient" bands that are close to, but do not cross the Fermi level. Related theoretical works disagree on whether or not strong-coupling superconductivity is required to explain such effects, and whether a critical interaction strength exists. In this work, we consider various versions of the model problem of pairing of electrons in the presence of an incipient band, within a simple multiband weak-coupling BCS approximation. We categorize the problem into two cases: case(I) where superconductivity arises from the "incipient band pairing" alone, and case(II) where it is induced on an incipient band by pairing due to Fermi-surface based interactions. Negative conclusions regarding the importance of incipient bands have been drawn so far largely based on case(I), but we show explicitly that models under case(II) are qualitatively different, and can explain the non-exponential suppression of Tc, as well as robust large gaps on an incipient band. In the latter situation, large gaps on the incipient band do not require a critical interaction strength. We also model the interplay between phonon and spin fluctuation driven superconductivity and describe the bootstrap of electron-phonon superconductivity by spin fluctuations coupling the incipient and the regular bands. Finally, we discuss the effect of the dimensionality of the incipient band on our results. We argue that pairing on incipient bands may be significant and important in several Fe-based materials, including LiFeAs, FeSe intercalates and FeSe monolayers on strontium titanate, and indeed may contribute to high critical temperatures in some cases.

Scaling of entanglement in $2+1$-dimensional scale-invariant field theories

We study the universal scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of critical theories in $2+1$ dimensions. We specially consider two fermionic scale-invariant models, free massless Dirac fermions and a model of fermions with quadratic band touching, and numerically study the two-cylinder entanglement entropy of the models on the torus. We find that in both cases the entanglement entropy satisfies the area law and has the subleading term which is a scaling function of the aspect ratios of the cylindrical regions. We test the scaling of entanglement in both the free fermion models using three possible scaling functions for the subleading term derived from a) the quasi-one-dimensional conformal field theory, b) the bosonic quantum Lifshitz model, and c) the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence. For the later case we construct an analytic scaling function using holography, appropriate for critical theories with a gravitational dual description. We find that the subleading term in the fermionic models is well described, for a range of aspect ratios, by the scaling form derived from the quantum Lifshitz model as well as that derived using the AdS/CFT correspondence (in this case only for the Dirac model). For the case where the fermionic models are placed on a square torus we find the fit to the different scaling forms is in agreement to surprisingly high precision.

Topological BF theory of the quantum hydrodynamics of incompressible polar fluids

We analyze a hydrodynamical model of a polar fluid in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. We explore a spacetime symmetry -- volume preserving diffeomorphisms -- to construct an effective description of this fluid in terms of a topological BF theory. The two degrees of freedom of the BF theory are associated to the mass (charge) flows of the fluid and its polarization vorticities. We discuss the quantization of this hydrodynamic theory, which generically allows for fractionalized excitations. We propose an extension of the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman algebra to (3+1)-dimensional spacetime by the inclusion of the vortex-density operator in addition to the usual charge density operator and show that the same algebra is obeyed by massive Dirac fermions that represent the bulk of $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ topological insulators in three-dimensional space.

A Flexible Uncertainty Quantification Framework for General Multi-Physics Systems

We present a "module-based hybrid" Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) framework for general nonlinear multi-physics simulation. The proposed methodology, introduced in [\hyperlink{ref1}{1}], supports the independent development of each \emph{stochastic} linear or nonlinear physics module equipped with the most suitable probabilistic UQ method: non-intrusive, semi-intrusive or intrusive; and provides a generic framework to couple these stochastic simulation components. Moreover, the methodology is illustrated using a common "global" uncertainty representation scheme based on generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) expansions of inputs and outputs. By using thermally-driven cavity flow as the multi-physics model problem, we demonstrate the utility of our framework and report the computational gains achieved.

Unconventional Fusion and Braiding of Topological Defects in a Lattice Model

We demonstrate the semiclassical nature of symmetry twist defects that differ from quantum deconfined anyons in a true topological phase by examining non-abelian crystalline defects in an abelian lattice model. An underlying non-dynamical ungauged S3-symmetry labels the quasi-extensive defects by group elements and gives rise to order dependent fusion. A central subgroup of local Wilson observables distinguishes defect-anyon composites by species, which can mutate through abelian anyon tunneling by tuning local defect phase parameters. We compute a complete consistent set of primitive basis transformations, or F-symbols, and study braiding and exchange between commuting defects. This suggests a modified spin-statistics theorem for defects and non-modular group structures unitarily represented by the braiding S and exchange T matrices. Non-abelian braiding operations in a closed system represent the sphere braid group projectively by a non-trivial central extension that relates the underlying symmetry.

Symmetry-protected topological phases and orbifolds: Generalized Laughlin's argument

We consider non-chiral symmetry-protected topological phases of matter in two spatial dimensions protected by a discrete symmetry such as $\mathbb{Z}_K$ or $\mathbb Z_K \times \mathbb Z_K $ symmetry. We argue that modular invariance/noninvariance of the partition function of the one-dimensional edge theory can be used to diagnose whether, by adding a suitable potential, the edge theory can be gapped or not without breaking the symmetry. By taking bosonic phases described by Chern-Simons K-matrix theories and fermionic phases relevant to topological superconductors as an example, we demonstrate explicitly that when the modular invariance is achieved, we can construct an interaction potential that is consistent with the symmetry and can completely gap out the edge.

Braiding Statistics and Congruent Invariance of Twist Defects in Bosonic Bilayer Fractional Quantum Hall States

We describe the braiding statistics of topological twist defects in abelian bosonic bilayer (mmn) fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, which reduce to the Z_n toric code when m=0. Twist defects carry non-abelian fractional Majorana-like characteristics. We propose local statistical measurements that distinguish the fractional charge, or species, of a defect-quasiparticle composite. Degenerate ground states and basis transformations of a multi-defect system are characterized by a consistent set of fusion properties. Non-abelian unitary exchange operations are determined using half braids between defects, and projectively represent the sphere braid group in a closed system. Defect spin statistics are modified by equating exchange with 4πrotation. The braiding S matrix is identified with a Dehn twist (instead of a π/2 rotation) on a torus decorated with a non-trivial twofold branch cut, and represents the congruent subgroup Γ_0(2) of modular transformations.

Quantum Entanglement and Thermal Reduced Density Matrices in Fermion and Spin Systems on Ladders

Numerical studies of the reduced density matrix of a gapped spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-leg ladder find that it has the same form as the Gibbs density matrix of a gapless spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain at a finite temperature determined by the spin gap of the ladder. We investigate this interesting result by considering a model of free fermions on a two-leg ladder (gapped by the inter-chain tunneling operator) and in spin systems on a ladder with a gapped ground state using exact solutions and several controlled approximations. We calculate the reduced density matrix and the entanglement entropy for a leg of the ladder (i.e. cut made between the chains). In the fermionic system we find the exact form of the reduced density matrix for one of the chains and determine the entanglement spectrum explicitly. Here we find that in the weak tunneling limit of the ladder the entanglement entropy of one chain of the gapped ladder has a simple and universal form dictated by conformal invariance. In the case of the spin system, we consider the strong coupling limit by using perturbation theory and get the reduced density matrix by the Schmidt decomposition. The entanglement entropies of a general gapped system of two coupled conformal field theories (in 1+1 dimensions) is discussed using the replica trick and scaling arguments. We show that 1) for a system with a bulk gap the reduced density matrix has the form of a thermal density matrix, 2) the long-wavelength modes of one subsystem (a chain) of a gapped coupled system are always thermal, 3) the von Neumann entropy equals to the thermodynamic entropy of one chain, and 4) the bulk gap plays the role of effective temperature.

The Renyi Entropy and the Multifractal Spectrum of Systems Near the Localization Transition

We show that the Rényi entropies of single particle, extended wave functions for disordered systems contain information about the multifractal spectrum. It is shown for moments of the Rényi entropy, $S_{n}$, where $|n|<1$, it is possible to extract universal information about the multifractility of such systems. This is shown through a generic calculation and then illustrated through two example models. We find good agreement between our analytic formula and numerical simulations of the two test models. Our formalism is easily extendable to generic non-interacting fermion models. It is also suggested that recent experimental advances in measuring the multifractal spectrum might allow some moments of the Rényi entropy to be measured.

R-CA: A Routing-based Dynamic Channel Assignment Algorithm for Wireless Mesh Networks

Even though channel assignment has been studied for years, the performance of most IEEE 802.11-based multi-hop wireless networks such as wireless sensor network (WSN), wireless mesh network (WMN), mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is limited by channel interference. Properly assigning orthogonal channels to wireless links can improve the throughput of multi-hop networks. To solve the dynamic channel assignment problem, a routing-based channel assignment algorithm called R-CA is proposed. R-CA can allocate channels for wireless nodes when needed and free channels after data transmission. Thus more channel resource can be explored by wireless nodes. Simulation results show that R-CA can effectively enhance the network throughput and packet delivery rate.

Particle-In-Cell Simulation of RFQ in SSC - Linac

A 52MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerator (linac) is designed to serve as an initial structure for the SSC-linac system (injector into Separated Sector Cyclotron). The designed injection and output energy are 3.5 keV/u and 143 keV/u, respectively. Beam dynamics study in RFQ was done using 3-dimensional particle-in-cell code BEAMPATH [1]. Simulation results show that this RFQ structure is characterized by stable value of beam transmission efficiency (at least 95%) for both zero-current mode and for space charge dominated regime. The beam accelerated in RFQ has good quality in both transversal and longitudinal directions, and could be easily accepted by Drift Tube Linac (DTL). Effects of vane errors and of the space charge on beam parameters are studied as well to define the engineering tolerance for RFQ vane machining and alignment.
