Ground-state properties of nanographite systems with zigzag-shaped edges

A π-electron network in nanographite systems with zigzag edges exhibits strongly localized edge states, which are expected to have peculiar properties. We study effects of electron-electron interactions on ground-state properties of the systems by means of the weak-coupling renormalization group and the density-matrix renormalization-group method. It is shown that the ground state is a spin-singlet Mott insulator with finite charge and spin gaps. We also find that the edge states are robust against the electronic correlations, resulting in edge effective spins which can flip almost freely. The schematic picture for the low-energy physics of the systems is discussed.

Crossover behaviors in liquid region of vortex states above a critical point caused by point defects

Vortex states in high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors with point defects are studied by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the three-dimensional frustrated XY model. A critical point is observed on the first-order phase boundary between the vortex slush and vortex liquid phases. A step-like anomaly of the specific heat is detected in simulations of finite systems, similar to an experimental observation [F.~Bouquet {\it et al.}, Nature (London) {\bf 411}, 448 (2001)]. However, it diminishes with increasing system size, and the number and size distribution of thermally-excited vortex loops show continuous behaviors around this anomaly. Therefore, the present study suggests a crossover rather than a thermodynamic phase transition above the critical point.

Spin-chirality duality in a spin ladder with four-spin cyclic exchange

Effect of four-spin cyclic exchange on magnetism is studied in the two-leg S=1/2 ladder. We develop an exact spin-chirality duality transformation, under which the system is self-dual when the four-spin exchange J_4 is half of the two-spin exchange. Using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and the duality relation, we find that the four-spin exchange makes the vector chirality correlation dominant. A "chirality short-range resonating-valence-bond" phase is identified for the first time at large J_4.

Bragg-Bose glass phase in vortex states of high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors with sparse and weak columnar defects

Phase diagram of vortex states of high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors with {\it sparse and weak} columnar defects is obtained by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the three-dimensional anisotropic, frustrated XY model. The Bragg-Bose glass phase characterized by hexagonal Bragg spots and the diverging tilt modulus is observed numerically for the first time at low density of columnar defects. As the density of defects increases, the melting temperature increases owing to "selected pinning" of flux lines. When the density of defects further increases, the transition to the Bose glass phase occurs. The interstitial liquid region is observed between these two glass phases and the vortex liquid phase.

Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions of Vortex Matter in Three-Dimensional Layered Superconductors

Large-scale simulations on three-dimensional (3D) frustrated anisotropic XY model have been performed to study the nonequilibrium phase transitions of vortex matter in weak random pinning potential in layered superconductors. The first-order phase transition from the moving Bragg glass to the moving smectic is clarified, based on thermodynamic quantities. A washboard noise is observed in the moving Bragg glass in 3D simulations for the first time. It is found that the activation of the vortex loops play the dominant role in the dynamical melting at high drive.

Quantal phases, disorder effects and superconductivity in spin-Peierls systems

In view of recent developments in the investigation on cuprate high-T${}_{\rm c}$ superconductors and the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO${}_{3}$, we study the effect of dilute impurity doping on the spin-Peierls state in quasi-one dimensional systems. We identify a common origin for the emergence of antiferromagnetic order upon the introduction of static vacancies, and superconductivity for mobile holes.

Bicritical and tetracritical phenomena and scaling properties of the SO(5) theory

By large scale Monte Carlo simulations it is shown that the stable fixed point of the SO(5) theory is either bicritical or tetracritical depending on the effective interaction between the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity orders. There are no fluctuation-induced first-order transitions suggested by epsilon expansions. Bicritical and tetracritical scaling functions are derived for the first time and critical exponents are evaluated with high accuracy. Suggestions on experiments are given.

Effects of point defects on the phase diagram of vortex states in high-Tc superconductors in B//c axis

The phase diagram for the vortex states of high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors with point defects in $\vec{B} \parallel c$ axis is drawn by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. The vortex slush (VS) phase is found between the vortex glass (VG) and vortex liquid (VL) phases. The first-order transition between this novel normal phase and the VL phase is characterized by a sharp jump of the density of dislocations. The first-order transition between the Bragg glass (BG) and VG or VS phases is also clarified. These two transitions are compared with the melting transition between the BG and VL phases.

Possible critical point in phase diagrams of interlayer Josephson-vortex systems in high-Tc superconductors

A critical value in the product of the anisotropy parameter and the magnetic field is observed in interlayer Josephson-vortex systems by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Below/above this critical value the thermodynamic phase transition between the normal and the superconducting states upon temperature sweeping is first/second order. The origin is the intrinsic pinning effect of the layered structure of high-Tc superconductors.

Evidence of first-order transition between vortex glass and Bragg glass phases in high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors with point pins: Monte Carlo simulations

Phase transition between the vortex glass and the Bragg glass phases in high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors in $\vec{B}\parallel\vec{c}$ is studied by Monte Carlo simulations in the presence of point pins. A finite latent heat and a $δ$-function peak of the specific heat are observed, which clearly indicates that this is a thermodynamic first-order phase transition. Values of the entropy jump and the Lindemann number are consistent with those of melting transitions. A large jump of the inter-layer phase difference is consistent with the recent Josephson plasma resonance experiment of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+y}$ by Gaifullin {\it et al.}

Thermodynamic properties of the SO(5) theory for the antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity: a Monte Carlo study

The present approach takes into account thermal fluctuations both in the rotation of SO(5) superspins between the AF and SC subspaces, and in the phase variables of SC order parameters. Temperature vs. g-field phase diagrams for null external magnetic field are presented, where the g field is conjugate with the quadratic order parameters and breaks the SO(5) symmetry. The normal(N)/AF and N/SC phase boundaries merge tangentially at the bicritical point into the AF/SC phase boundary. Hysteresis phenomenon is observed at the AF/SC phase transition. Enhancement of AF correlations is observed above the SC critical temperature in systems with AF couplings stronger than SC ones. Its relation with the spin-gap phenomenon is addressed. The SO(5) theory in an external magnetic field is also investigated. At sufficiently large g fields the SC order is established through a first-order freezing transition of the flux-line lattice. Short-range AF fluctuations are larger at cores of flux lines than elsewhere, and decrease continuously to zero with increasing g field. At intermediate g fields, the flux-line lattice of long-range SC order and the long-range AF order coexist. Superlattice spots surrounding the strong AF Bragg peaks at Q=(\pmπ,\pmπ) are observed in the simulated structure factor, and are identified with the modulation by the triangular flux-line lattice of SC. The AF phase boundary associated with the continuous onset of long-range AF order drops sharply to the g axis from a finite temperature in the temperature vs. g-field phase diagram.

Flux-line entanglement as the mechanism of melting transition in high-temperature superconductors in a magnetic field

The mechanism of the flux-line-lattice (FLL) melting in anisotropic high-T_c superconductors in ${\bf B}\parallel {\bf \hat{c}}$ is clarified by Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D frustrated XY model. The percentage of entangled flux lines abruptly changes at the melting temperature T_m, while no sharp change can be found in the number and size distribution of vortex loops around T_m. Therefore, the origin of this melting transition is the entanglement of flux lines. Scaling behaviors of physical quantities are consistent with the above mechanism of the FLL melting. The Lindemann number is also evaluated without any phenomenological arguments.
