ReSync: Riemannian Subgradient-based Robust Rotation Synchronization

This work presents ReSync, a Riemannian subgradient-based algorithm for solving the robust rotation synchronization problem, which arises in various engineering applications. ReSync solves a least-unsquared minimization formulation over the rotation group, which is nonsmooth and nonconvex, and aims at recovering the underlying rotations directly. We provide strong theoretical guarantees for ReSync under the random corruption setting. Specifically, we first show that the initialization procedure of ReSync yields a proper initial point that lies in a local region around the ground-truth rotations. We next establish the weak sharpness property of the aforementioned formulation and then utilize this property to derive the local linear convergence of ReSync to the ground-truth rotations. By combining these guarantees, we conclude that ReSync converges linearly to the ground-truth rotations under appropriate conditions. Experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of ReSync.

Investigating the Catastrophic Forgetting in Multimodal Large Language Models

Following the success of GPT4, there has been a surge in interest in multimodal large language model (MLLM) research. This line of research focuses on developing general-purpose LLMs through fine-tuning pre-trained LLMs and vision models. However, catastrophic forgetting, a notorious phenomenon where the fine-tuned model fails to retain similar performance compared to the pre-trained model, still remains an inherent problem in multimodal LLMs (MLLM). In this paper, we introduce EMT: Evaluating MulTimodality for evaluating the catastrophic forgetting in MLLMs, by treating each MLLM as an image classifier. We first apply EMT to evaluate several open-source fine-tuned MLLMs and we discover that almost all evaluated MLLMs fail to retain the same performance levels as their vision encoders on standard image classification tasks. Moreover, we continue fine-tuning LLaVA, an MLLM and utilize EMT to assess performance throughout the fine-tuning. Interestingly, our results suggest that early-stage fine-tuning on an image dataset improves performance across other image datasets, by enhancing the alignment of text and visual features. However, as fine-tuning proceeds, the MLLMs begin to hallucinate, resulting in a significant loss of generalizability, even when the image encoder remains frozen. Our results suggest that MLLMs have yet to demonstrate performance on par with their vision models on standard image classification tasks and the current MLLM fine-tuning procedure still has room for improvement.

Nearly minimax empirical Bayesian prediction of independent Poisson observables

In this study, simultaneous predictive distributions for independent Poisson observables were considered and the performance of predictive distributions was evaluated using the Kullback-Leibler (K-L) loss. This study proposes a class of empirical Bayesian predictive distributions that dominate the Bayesian predictive distribution based on the Jeffreys prior. The K-L risk of the empirical Bayesian predictive distributions is demonstrated to be less than 1.04 times the minimax lower bound.

Low-Complexity Joint Beamforming for RIS-Assisted MU-MISO Systems Based on Model-Driven Deep Learning

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) can improve signal propagation environments by adjusting the phase of the incident signal. However, optimizing the phase shifts jointly with the beamforming vector at the access point is challenging due to the non-convex objective function and constraints. In this study, we propose an algorithm based on weighted minimum mean square error optimization and power iteration to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of a RIS-assisted downlink multi-user multiple-input single-output system. To further improve performance, a model-driven deep learning (DL) approach is designed, where trainable variables and graph neural networks are introduced to accelerate the convergence of the proposed algorithm. We also extend the proposed method to include beamforming with imperfect channel state information and derive a two-timescale stochastic optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of complexity and WSR. Specifically, the model-driven DL approach has a runtime that is approximately 3% of the state-of-the-art algorithm to achieve the same performance. Additionally, the proposed algorithm with 2-bit phase shifters outperforms the compared algorithm with continuous phase shift.

Missing Value Imputation for Multi-attribute Sensor Data Streams via Message Propagation (Extended Version)

Sensor data streams occur widely in various real-time applications in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, sensor data streams feature missing values due to factors such as sensor failures, communication errors, or depleted batteries. Missing values can compromise the quality of real-time analytics tasks and downstream applications. Existing imputation methods either make strong assumptions about streams or have low efficiency. In this study, we aim to accurately and efficiently impute missing values in data streams that satisfy only general characteristics in order to benefit real-time applications more widely. First, we propose a message propagation imputation network (MPIN) that is able to recover the missing values of data instances in a time window. We give a theoretical analysis of why MPIN is effective. Second, we present a continuous imputation framework that consists of data update and model update mechanisms to enable MPIN to perform continuous imputation both effectively and efficiently. Extensive experiments on multiple real datasets show that MPIN can outperform the existing data imputers by wide margins and that the continuous imputation framework is efficient and accurate.

Model Predictive Control of Diesel Engine Emissions Based on Neural Network Modeling

This paper addresses the control of diesel engine nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Soot emissions through the application of Model Predictive Control (MPC). The developments described in the paper are based on a high-fidelity model of the engine airpath and torque response in GT-Power, which is extended with a feedforward neural network (FNN)-based model of engine out (feedgas) emissions identified from experimental engine data to enable the controller co-simulation and performance verification. A Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is then identified for use as a prediction model in the implementation of a nonlinear economic MPC that adjusts intake manifold pressure and EGR rate set-points to the inner loop airpath controller as well as the engine fueling rate. Based on GT-Power engine model and FNN emissions model, the closed-loop simulations of the control system and the plant model, over different driving cycles, demonstrate the capability to shape engine out emissions response by adjusting weights and constraints in economic MPC formulation.

Modeling and Control of Diesel Engine Emissions using Multi-layer Neural Networks and Economic Model Predictive Control

This paper presents the results of developing a multi-layer Neural Network (NN) to represent diesel engine emissions and integrating this NN into control design. Firstly, a NN is trained and validated to simultaneously predict oxides of nitrogen (N Ox) and Soot using both transient and steady-state data. Based on the input-output correlation analysis, inputs to NN with the highest influence on the emissions are selected while keeping the NN structure simple. Secondly, a co-simulation framework is implemented to integrate the NN emissions model with a model of a diesel engine airpath system built in GT-Power and used to identify a low-order linear parameter-varying (LPV) model for emissions prediction. Finally, an economic supervisory model predictive controller (MPC) is developed using the LPV emissions model to adjust setpoints to an inner-loop airpath tracking MPC. Simulation results are reported illustrating the capability of the resulting controller to reduce N Ox, meet the target Soot limit, and track the adjusted intake manifold pressure and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate targets.

High-Fidelity and Freely Controllable Talking Head Video Generation

Talking head generation is to generate video based on a given source identity and target motion. However, current methods face several challenges that limit the quality and controllability of the generated videos. First, the generated face often has unexpected deformation and severe distortions. Second, the driving image does not explicitly disentangle movement-relevant information, such as poses and expressions, which restricts the manipulation of different attributes during generation. Third, the generated videos tend to have flickering artifacts due to the inconsistency of the extracted landmarks between adjacent frames. In this paper, we propose a novel model that produces high-fidelity talking head videos with free control over head pose and expression. Our method leverages both self-supervised learned landmarks and 3D face model-based landmarks to model the motion. We also introduce a novel motion-aware multi-scale feature alignment module to effectively transfer the motion without face distortion. Furthermore, we enhance the smoothness of the synthesized talking head videos with a feature context adaptation and propagation module. We evaluate our model on challenging datasets and demonstrate its state-of-the-art performance.

Decision-Making for Autonomous Vehicles with Interaction-Aware Behavioral Prediction and Social-Attention Neural Network

Autonomous vehicles need to accomplish their tasks while interacting with human drivers in traffic. It is thus crucial to equip autonomous vehicles with artificial reasoning to better comprehend the intentions of the surrounding traffic, thereby facilitating the accomplishments of the tasks. In this work, we propose a behavioral model that encodes drivers' interacting intentions into latent social-psychological parameters. Leveraging a Bayesian filter, we develop a receding-horizon optimization-based controller for autonomous vehicle decision-making which accounts for the uncertainties in the interacting drivers' intentions. For online deployment, we design a neural network architecture based on the attention mechanism which imitates the behavioral model with online estimated parameter priors. We also propose a decision tree search algorithm to solve the decision-making problem online. The proposed behavioral model is then evaluated in terms of its capabilities for real-world trajectory prediction. We further conduct extensive evaluations of the proposed decision-making module, in forced highway merging scenarios, using both simulated environments and real-world traffic datasets. The results demonstrate that our algorithms can complete the forced merging tasks in various traffic conditions while ensuring driving safety.

Mitigating crosstalk and residual coupling errors in superconducting quantum processors using many-body localization

Addressing the paramount need for precise calibration in superconducting quantum qubits, especially in frequency control, this study introduces a novel calibration scheme harnessing the principles of Many-Body Localization (MBL). While existing strategies, such as Google's snake algorithm, have targeted optimization of qubit frequency parameters, our MBL-based methodology emerges as a stalwart against noise, notably crosstalk and residual coupling errors, thereby significantly enhancing quantum processor fidelity and stability without necessitating extensive optimization computation. Not only does this approach provide a marked improvement in performance, particularly where specific residue couplings are present, but it also presents a more resource-efficient and cost-effective calibration process. The research delineated herein affords fresh insights into advanced calibration strategies and propels forward the domain of superconducting quantum computation by offering a robust framework for future explorations in minimizing error and optimizing qubit performance.

A Blockchain-empowered Multi-Aggregator Federated Learning Architecture in Edge Computing with Deep Reinforcement Learning Optimization

Federated learning (FL) is emerging as a sought-after distributed machine learning architecture, offering the advantage of model training without direct exposure of raw data. With advancements in network infrastructure, FL has been seamlessly integrated into edge computing. However, the limited resources on edge devices introduce security vulnerabilities to FL in the context. While blockchain technology promises to bolster security, practical deployment on resource-constrained edge devices remains a challenge. Moreover, the exploration of FL with multiple aggregators in edge computing is still new in the literature. Addressing these gaps, we introduce the Blockchain-empowered Heterogeneous Multi-Aggregator Federated Learning Architecture (BMA-FL). We design a novel light-weight Byzantine consensus mechanism, namely PBCM, to enable secure and fast model aggregation and synchronization in BMA-FL. We also dive into the heterogeneity problem in BMA-FL that the aggregators are associated with varied number of connected trainers with Non-IID data distributions and diverse training speed. We proposed a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning algorithm to help aggregators decide the best training strategies. The experiments on real-word datasets demonstrate the efficiency of BMA-FL to achieve better models faster than baselines, showing the efficacy of PBCM and proposed deep reinforcement learning algorithm.

Out-of-time-order correlator, many-body quantum chaos, light-like generators, and singular values

We study out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) of local operators in spatial-temporal invariant or random quantum circuits using light-like generators (LLG) -- many-body operators that exist in and act along the light-like directions. We demonstrate that the OTOC can be approximated by the leading singular value of the LLG, which, for the case of generic many-body chaotic circuits, is increasingly accurate as the size of the LLG, $w$, increases. We analytically show that the OTOC has a decay with a universal form in the light-like direction near the causal light cone, as dictated by the sub-leading eigenvalues of LLG, $z_2$, and their degeneracies. Further, we analytically derive and numerically verify that the sub-leading eigenvalues of LLG of any size can be accessibly extracted from those of LLG of the smallest size, i.e., $z_2(w)= z_2(w=1)$. Using symmetries and recursive structures of LLG, we propose two conjectures on the universal aspects of generic many-body quantum chaotic circuits, one on the algebraic degeneracy of eigenvalues of LLG, and another on the geometric degeneracy of the sub-leading eigenvalues of LLG. As corollaries of the conjectures, we analytically derive the asymptotic form of the leading singular state, which in turn allows us to postulate and efficiently compute a product-state variational ansatz away from the asymptotic limit. We numerically test the claims with four generic circuit models of many-body quantum chaos, and contrast these statements against the cases of a dual unitary system and an integrable system.

Quantum anomalous Hall state in a fluorinated 1T-MoSe$_2$ monolayer

The quantum anomalous Hall state with a large band gap and a high Chern number is significant for practical applications in spintronics. By performing first-principles calculations, we investigate electronic properties of the fully fluorinated 1T-MoSe$_{2}$ monolayer. Without considering the spin-orbit coupling, the band structure demonstrates single-spin semi-metallic properties and the trigonal warping around $K_{\pm}$ valleys. The introduction of the spin-orbit coupling opens considerable band gaps of $117.2$ meV around the two valleys, leading to a nontrivial quantum anomalous Hall state with a Chern number of $|C|=2$, which provides two chiral dissipationless transport channels from topological edge states and associated quantized anomalous Hall conductivity. In addition, an effective model is constructed to describe the low-energy physics of the monolayer. Our findings in the MoSe$_{2}$F$_{2}$ monolayer sheds light on large-gap quantum anomalous Hall states in two-dimensional materials with the chemical functionalization, and provides opportunities in designing low-power and noise-tolerant spintronic devices.

Interaction-Aware Decision-Making for Autonomous Vehicles in Forced Merging Scenario Leveraging Social Psychology Factors

Understanding the intention of vehicles in the surrounding traffic is crucial for an autonomous vehicle to successfully accomplish its driving tasks in complex traffic scenarios such as highway forced merging. In this paper, we consider a behavioral model that incorporates both social behaviors and personal objectives of the interacting drivers. Leveraging this model, we develop a receding-horizon control-based decision-making strategy, that estimates online the other drivers' intentions using Bayesian filtering and incorporates predictions of nearby vehicles' behaviors under uncertain intentions. The effectiveness of the proposed decision-making strategy is demonstrated and evaluated based on simulation studies in comparison with a game theoretic controller and a real-world traffic dataset.

Performance Evaluation for Subarray-based Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Wireless Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have received extensive concern to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. In this paper, a subarray-based scheme is investigated in terms of its effects on ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) in RIS-assisted systems. In this scheme, the adjacent elements divided into a subarray are controlled by one signal and share the same reflection coefficient. An upper bound of ergodic SE is derived and an optimal phase shift design is proposed for the subarray-based RIS. Based on the upper bound and optimal design, we obtain the maximum of the upper bound. In particular, we analytically evaluate the effect of the subarray-based RIS on EE since it reduces SE and power consumption simultaneously. Numerical results verify the tightness of the upper bound, demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimal phase shift design for the subarray-based RIS, and reveal the effects of the subarray-based scheme on SE and EE.

Multi-step prediction of chlorophyll concentration based on Adaptive Graph-Temporal Convolutional Network with Series Decomposition

Chlorophyll concentration can well reflect the nutritional status and algal blooms of water bodies, and is an important indicator for evaluating water quality. The prediction of chlorophyll concentration change trend is of great significance to environmental protection and aquaculture. However, there is a complex and indistinguishable nonlinear relationship between many factors affecting chlorophyll concentration. In order to effectively mine the nonlinear features contained in the data. This paper proposes a time-series decomposition adaptive graph-time convolutional network ( AGTCNSD ) prediction model. Firstly, the original sequence is decomposed into trend component and periodic component by moving average method. Secondly, based on the graph convolutional neural network, the water quality parameter data is modeled, and a parameter embedding matrix is defined. The idea of matrix decomposition is used to assign weight parameters to each node. The adaptive graph convolution learns the relationship between different water quality parameters, updates the state information of each parameter, and improves the learning ability of the update relationship between nodes. Finally, time dependence is captured by time convolution to achieve multi-step prediction of chlorophyll concentration. The validity of the model is verified by the water quality data of the coastal city Beihai. The results show that the prediction effect of this method is better than other methods. It can be used as a scientific resource for environmental management decision-making.

Chat2Brain: A Method for Mapping Open-Ended Semantic Queries to Brain Activation Maps

Over decades, neuroscience has accumulated a wealth of research results in the text modality that can be used to explore cognitive processes. Meta-analysis is a typical method that successfully establishes a link from text queries to brain activation maps using these research results, but it still relies on an ideal query environment. In practical applications, text queries used for meta-analyses may encounter issues such as semantic redundancy and ambiguity, resulting in an inaccurate mapping to brain images. On the other hand, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have shown great potential in tasks such as context understanding and reasoning, displaying a high degree of consistency with human natural language. Hence, LLMs could improve the connection between text modality and neuroscience, resolving existing challenges of meta-analyses. In this study, we propose a method called Chat2Brain that combines LLMs to basic text-2-image model, known as Text2Brain, to map open-ended semantic queries to brain activation maps in data-scarce and complex query environments. By utilizing the understanding and reasoning capabilities of LLMs, the performance of the mapping model is optimized by transferring text queries to semantic queries. We demonstrate that Chat2Brain can synthesize anatomically plausible neural activation patterns for more complex tasks of text queries.
