The Logical Options Framework

Learning composable policies for environments with complex rules and tasks is a challenging problem. We introduce a hierarchical reinforcement learning framework called the Logical Options Framework (LOF) that learns policies that are satisfying, optimal, and composable. LOF efficiently learns policies that satisfy tasks by representing the task as an automaton and integrating it into learning and planning. We provide and prove conditions under which LOF will learn satisfying, optimal policies. And lastly, we show how LOF's learned policies can be composed to satisfy unseen tasks with only 10-50 retraining steps. We evaluate LOF on four tasks in discrete and continuous domains, including a 3D pick-and-place environment.

Rethinking Natural Adversarial Examples for Classification Models

Recently, it was found that many real-world examples without intentional modifications can fool machine learning models, and such examples are called "natural adversarial examples". ImageNet-A is a famous dataset of natural adversarial examples. By analyzing this dataset, we hypothesized that large, cluttered and/or unusual background is an important reason why the images in this dataset are difficult to be classified. We validated the hypothesis by reducing the background influence in ImageNet-A examples with object detection techniques. Experiments showed that the object detection models with various classification models as backbones obtained much higher accuracy than their corresponding classification models. A detection model based on the classification model EfficientNet-B7 achieved a top-1 accuracy of 53.95%, surpassing previous state-of-the-art classification models trained on ImageNet, suggesting that accurate localization information can significantly boost the performance of classification models on ImageNet-A. We then manually cropped the objects in images from ImageNet-A and created a new dataset, named ImageNet-A-Plus. A human test on the new dataset showed that the deep learning-based classifiers still performed quite poorly compared with humans. Therefore, the new dataset can be used to study the robustness of classification models to the internal variance of objects without considering the background disturbance.

Hybrid Beamforming for mmWave MU-MISO Systems Exploiting Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this letter, we investigate the hybrid beamforming based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for millimeter Wave (mmWave) multi-user (MU) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) system. A multi-agent DRL method is proposed to solve the exploration efficiency problem in DRL. In the proposed method, prioritized replay buffer and more informative reward are applied to accelerate the convergence. Simulation results show that the proposed architecture achieves higher spectral efficiency and less time consumption than the benchmarks, thus is more suitable for practical applications.

Back-n White Neutron Source at CSNS and its Applications

Back-streaming neutrons from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) that emit through the incoming proton channel were exploited to build a white neutron beam facility (the so-called Back-n white neutron source), which was completed in March 2018. The Back-n neutron beam is very intense, at approximately 2*10^7 n/cm^2/s at 55 m from the target, and has a nominal proton beam with a power of 100 kW in the CSNS-I phase and a kinetic energy of 1.6 GeV and a thick tungsten target in multiple slices with modest moderation from the cooling water through the slices. In addition, the excellent energy spectrum spanning from 0.5 eV to 200 MeV, and a good time resolution related to the time-of-flight measurements make it a typical white neutron source for nuclear data measurements; its overall performance is among that of the best white neutron sources in the world. Equipped with advanced spectrometers, detectors, and application utilities, the Back-n facility can serve wide applications, with a focus on neutron-induced cross-section measurements. This article presents an overview of the neutron beam characteristics, the experimental setups, and the ongoing applications at Back-n.

TSQA: Tabular Scenario Based Question Answering

Scenario-based question answering (SQA) has attracted an increasing research interest. Compared with the well-studied machine reading comprehension (MRC), SQA is a more challenging task: a scenario may contain not only a textual passage to read but also structured data like tables, i.e., tabular scenario based question answering (TSQA). AI applications of TSQA such as answering multiple-choice questions in high-school exams require synthesizing data in multiple cells and combining tables with texts and domain knowledge to infer answers. To support the study of this task, we construct GeoTSQA. This dataset contains 1k real questions contextualized by tabular scenarios in the geography domain. To solve the task, we extend state-of-the-art MRC methods with TTGen, a novel table-to-text generator. It generates sentences from variously synthesized tabular data and feeds the downstream MRC method with the most useful sentences. Its sentence ranking model fuses the information in the scenario, question, and domain knowledge. Our approach outperforms a variety of strong baseline methods on GeoTSQA.

Gate-tunable chiral phonons in low-buckled group-IVA monolayers

We investigate the electric response of chiral phonons on the low-buckled group-IVA monolayers by performing first-principles calculations. The vertical electric field breaks the degeneracy of phonon modes at high-symmetry $\pm K$ points of the phonon Brillouin zone, and the size of the phononic gap is proportional to the strength of the electric field. The gapped phonon modes at $\pm K$ possess chiralities with considerable phonon circular polarizations and discrete phonon pseudoangular momenta. The chiralities of phonons are robust against the variation of the field strength, but reversed by changing the field direction. Electric control of chiral phonons adds a new dimension to the study of chiral phonons, which has potential use in the design of phononic and valley devices.

Interplay between RIS and AI in Wireless Communications: Fundamentals, Architectures, Applications, and Open Research Problems

Future wireless communication networks are expected to fulfill the unprecedented performance requirements to support our highly digitized and globally data-driven society. Various technological challenges must be overcome to achieve our goal. Among many potential technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and artificial intelligence (AI) have attracted extensive attention, thereby leading to a proliferation of studies for utilizing them in wireless communication systems. The RIS-based wireless communication frameworks and AI-enabled technologies, two of the promising technologies for the sixth-generation networks, interact and promote with each other, striving to collaboratively create a controllable, intelligent, reconfigurable, and programmable wireless propagation environment. This paper explores the road to implementing the combination of RIS and AI; specifically, integrating AI-enabled technologies into RIS-based frameworks for maximizing the practicality of RIS to facilitate the realization of smart radio propagation environments, elaborated from shallow to deep insights. We begin with the basic concept and fundamental characteristics of RIS, followed by the overview of the research status of RIS. Then, we analyze the inevitable trend of RIS to be combined with AI. In particular, we focus on recent research about RIS-based architectures embedded with AI, elucidating from the intelligent structures and systems of metamaterials to the AI-embedded RIS-assisted wireless communication systems. Finally, the challenges and potential of the topic are discussed.

A Text Reassembling Approach to Natural Language Generation

Recent years have seen a number of proposals for performing Natural Language Generation (NLG) based in large part on statistical techniques. Despite having many attractive features, we argue that these existing approaches nonetheless have some important drawbacks, sometimes because the approach in question is not fully statistical (i.e., relies on a certain amount of handcrafting), sometimes because the approach in question lacks transparency. Focussing on some of the key NLG tasks (namely Content Selection, Lexical Choice, and Linguistic Realisation), we propose a novel approach, called the Text Reassembling approach to NLG (TRG), which approaches the ideal of a purely statistical approach very closely, and which is at the same time highly transparent. We evaluate the TRG approach and discuss how TRG may be extended to deal with other NLG tasks, such as Document Structuring, and Aggregation. We discuss the strengths and limitations of TRG, concluding that the method may hold particular promise for domain experts who want to build an NLG system despite having little expertise in linguistics and NLG.

Efficient preparation of 2D defect-free atom arrays with near-fewest sorting-atom moves

Sorting atoms stochastically loaded in optical tweezer arrays via an auxiliary mobile tweezer is an efficient approach to preparing intermediate-scale defect-free atom arrays in arbitrary geometries. However, high filling fraction of atom-by-atom assemblers is impeded by redundant sorting moves with imperfect atom transport, especially for scaling the system size to larger atom numbers. Here, we propose a new sorting algorithm (heuristic cluster algorithm, HCA) which provides near-fewest moves in our tailored atom assembler scheme and experimentally demonstrate a $5\times6$ defect-free atom array with 98.4(7)$\%$ filling fraction for one rearrangement cycle. The feature of HCA that the number of moves $N_{m}\approx N$ ($N$ is the number of defect sites to be filled) makes the filling fraction uniform as the size of atom assembler enlarged. Our method is essential to scale hundreds of assembled atoms for bottom-up quantum computation, quantum simulation and precision measurement.

Physical Layer Security Enhancement Exploiting Intelligent Reflecting Surface

In this letter, the use of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to enhance the physical layer security of downlink wireless communication is investigated. Assuming a single-antenna legitimate user and a multi-antenna eavesdropper, we propose an effective algorithm to jointly optimize the active and passive beamforming. In the proposed algorithm, the optimal transmit beamforming vector at the BS under fixed IRS phase shifts is derived, and a low-complexity algorithm based on fractional programming (FP) and manifold optimization (MO) is proposed to obtain near optimal IRS phase shifts. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can almost achieve the performance upper bound with a fast convergence rate.

Adaptive Bit Partitioning for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted FDD Systems with Limited Feedback

In frequency division duplexing systems, the base station (BS) acquires downlink channel state information (CSI) via channel feedback, which has not been adequately investigated in the presence of RIS. In this study, we examine the limited channel feedback scheme by proposing a novel cascaded codebook and an adaptive bit partitioning strategy. The RIS segments the channel between the BS and mobile station into two sub-channels, each with line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS (NLoS) paths. To quantize the path gains, the cascaded codebook is proposed to be synthesized by two sub-codebooks whose codeword is cascaded by LoS and NLoS components. This enables the proposed cascaded codebook to cater the different distributions of LoS and NLoS path gains by flexibly using different feedback bits to design the codeword structure. On the basis of the proposed cascaded codebook, we derive an upper bound on ergodic rate loss with maximum ratio transmission and show that the rate loss can be cut down by optimizing the feedback bit allocation during codebook generation. To minimize the upper bound, we propose a bit partitioning strategy that is adaptive to diverse environment and system parameters. Extensive simulations are presented to show the superiority and robustness of the cascaded codebook and the efficiency of the adaptive bit partitioning scheme.

A stability-driven protocol for drug response interpretable prediction (staDRIP)

Modern cancer -omics and pharmacological data hold great promise in precision cancer medicine for developing individualized patient treatments. However, high heterogeneity and noise in such data pose challenges for predicting the response of cancer cell lines to therapeutic drugs accurately. As a result, arbitrary human judgment calls are rampant throughout the predictive modeling pipeline. In this work, we develop a transparent stability-driven pipeline for drug response interpretable predictions, or staDRIP, which builds upon the PCS framework for veridical data science (Yu and Kumbier, 2020) and mitigates the impact of human judgment calls. Here we use the PCS framework for the first time in cancer research to extract proteins and genes that are important in predicting the drug responses and stable across appropriate data and model perturbations. Out of the 24 most stable proteins we identified using data from the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE), 18 have been associated with the drug response or identified as a known or possible drug target in previous literature, demonstrating the utility of our stability-driven pipeline for knowledge discovery in cancer drug response prediction modeling.

A Bayesian Nonparametric model for textural pattern heterogeneity

Cancer radiomics is an emerging discipline promising to elucidate lesion phenotypes and tumor heterogeneity through patterns of enhancement, texture, morphology, and shape. The prevailing technique for image texture analysis relies on the construction and synthesis of Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrices (GLCM). Practice currently reduces the structured count data of a GLCM to reductive and redundant summary statistics for which analysis requires variable selection and multiple comparisons for each application, thus limiting reproducibility. In this article, we develop a Bayesian multivariate probabilistic framework for the analysis and unsupervised clustering of a sample of GLCM objects. By appropriately accounting for skewness and zero-inflation of the observed counts and simultaneously adjusting for existing spatial autocorrelation at nearby cells, the methodology facilitates estimation of texture pattern distributions within the GLCM lattice itself. The techniques are applied to cluster images of adrenal lesions obtained from CT scans with and without administration of contrast. We further assess whether the resultant subtypes are clinically oriented by investigating their correspondence with pathological diagnoses. Additionally, we compare performance to a class of machine-learning approaches currently used in cancer radiomics with simulation studies.

Improving Variational Autoencoder for Text Modelling with Timestep-Wise Regularisation

The Variational Autoencoder (VAE) is a popular and powerful model applied to text modelling to generate diverse sentences. However, an issue known as posterior collapse (or KL loss vanishing) happens when the VAE is used in text modelling, where the approximate posterior collapses to the prior, and the model will totally ignore the latent variables and be degraded to a plain language model during text generation. Such an issue is particularly prevalent when RNN-based VAE models are employed for text modelling. In this paper, we propose a simple, generic architecture called Timestep-Wise Regularisation VAE (TWR-VAE), which can effectively avoid posterior collapse and can be applied to any RNN-based VAE models. The effectiveness and versatility of our model are demonstrated in different tasks, including language modelling and dialogue response generation.

Maximum bound principle preserving integrating factor Runge-Kutta methods for semilinear parabolic equations

A large class of semilinear parabolic equations satisfy the maximum bound principle (MBP) in the sense that the time-dependent solution preserves for any time a uniform pointwise bound imposed by its initial and boundary conditions. Investigation on numerical schemes of these equations with preservation of the MBP has attracted increasingly attentions in recent years, especially for the temporal discretizations. In this paper, we study high-order MBP-preserving time integration schemes by means of the integrating factor Runge-Kutta (IFRK) method. Beginning with the space-discrete system of semilinear parabolic equations, we present the IFRK method in general form and derive the sufficient conditions for the method to preserve the MBP. In particular, we show that the classic four-stage, fourth-order IFRK scheme is MBP-preserving for some typical semilinear systems although not strong stability preserving, which can be instantly applied to the Allen-Cahn type of equations. In addition, error estimates for these numerical schemes are proved theoretically and verified numerically, as well as their efficiency by simulations of long-time evolutional behavior.

Valley Modulation and Single-Edge Transport of Magnons in Staggered Kagome Ferromagnets

Owing to its charge-free property, magnon is highly promising to achieve dissipationless transport without Joule heating and thus potentially applicable to energy-efficient devices. Moreover, a kagome lattice, as stacking layers of many magnon ferromagnets, also exhibits valley structure in quasiparticle spectra, which are likely to add a new dimension to magnon excitation. Here, we investigate valley magnon and associated valley modulation in a kagome lattice, with staggered exchange interaction and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The staggered exchange interaction breaks spatial inversion symmetry, leading to gapped degenerate valleys at $\pm K$ and consequent valley magnon Hall effect. When the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is further included, the valley degeneracy is lifted. As a result, net magnon anomalous Hall effect and topological phase transition are realized. More interestingly, by tuning valley splitting and excitation frequency, heat currents in the kagome strip can be localized at one edge to achieve single-edge transport. Besides, for the kagmon lattice, the edge heat currents include local circulating contribution within triangular fine structure, together with currents flowing parallel to the edges. These findings give full play to spin and valley degrees of freedom and enrich energy-efficient magnonic device paradigms.

Integrated Communication and Localization in mmWave Systems

As the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system is being commercialized, extensive studies on the evolution of 5G and sixth-generation mobile communication systems have been conducted. Future mobile communication systems are evidently evolving towards a more intelligent and software-reconfigurable functionality paradigm that can provide ubiquitous communication and also sense, control, and optimize wireless environments. Thus, integrating communication and localization by utilizing the highly directional transmission characteristics of millimeter-wave (mmWave) is a promising route. This approach not only expands the localization capabilities of a communication system but also provides new concepts and opportunities to enhance communication. In this paper, we explain the integrated communication and localization in mmWave systems, in which these processes share the same set of hardware architecture and algorithm. We also perform an overview of the key enabling technologies and the basic knowledge on localization. Then, we provide two promising directions for studies on localization with extremely large antenna array and model-based neural networks. We also discuss a comprehensive guidance for location-assisted mmWave communications in terms of channel estimation, channel state information feedback, beam tracking, synchronization, interference control, resource allocation, and user selection. Finally, this paper outlines the future trends on the mutual assistance and enhancement of communication and localization in integrated systems.
