GPS Signal Acquisition via Compressive Multichannel Sampling

In this paper, we propose an efficient acquisition scheme for GPS receivers. It is shown that GPS signals can be effectively sampled and detected using a bank of randomized correlators with much fewer chip-matched filters than those used in existing GPS signal acquisition algorithms. The latter use correlations with all possible shifted replicas of the satellite-specific C/A code and an exhaustive search for peaking signals over the delay-Doppler space. Our scheme is based on the recently proposed analog compressed sensing framework, and consists of a multichannel sampling structure with far fewer correlators. The compressive multichannel sampler outputs are linear combinations of a vector whose support tends to be sparse; by detecting its support one can identify the strongest satellite signals in the field of view and pinpoint the correct code-phase and Doppler shifts for finer resolution during tracking. The analysis in this paper demonstrates that GPS signals can be detected and acquired via the proposed structure at a lower cost in terms of number of correlations that need to be computed in the coarse acquisition phase, which in current GPS technology scales like the product of the number of all possible delays and Doppler shifts. In contrast, the required number of correlators in our compressive multichannel scheme scales as the number of satellites in the field of view of the device times the logarithm of number of delay-Doppler bins explored, as is typical for compressed sensing methods.

Chemical Doping and Enhanced Solar Energy Conversion of Graphene/Silicon Junctions

The effect of chemical doping of graphene films on the photovoltaic properties of the graphene/silicon Schottky junction solar cells was investigated. Thionyl chloride modification greatly enhanced the conductivity of graphene film, resulting in a significant improvement in cell performance with a 3-fold increase in conversion efficiency (up to 3.9%) and good short-term stability.

Photon generation by laser-Compton scattering at the KEK-ATF

We performed a photon generation experiment by laser-Compton scattering at the KEK-ATF, aiming to develop a Compton based polarized positron source for linear colliders. In the experiment, laser pulses with a 357 MHz repetition rate were accumulated and their power was enhanced by up to 250 times in the Fabry-Perot optical resonant cavity. We succeeded in synchronizing the laser pulses and colliding them with the 1.3 GeV electron beam in the ATF ring while maintaining the laser pulse accumulation in the cavity. As a result, we observed 26.0 +/- 0.1 photons per electron-laser pulse crossing, which corresponds to a yield of 10^8 photons in a second.

Statistical Eigenmode Transmission over Jointly-Correlated MIMO Channels

We investigate MIMO eigenmode transmission using statistical channel state information at the transmitter. We consider a general jointly-correlated MIMO channel model, which does not require separable spatial correlations at the transmitter and receiver. For this model, we first derive a closed-form tight upper bound for the ergodic capacity, which reveals a simple and interesting relationship in terms of the matrix permanent of the eigenmode channel coupling matrix and embraces many existing results in the literature as special cases. Based on this closed-form and tractable upper bound expression, we then employ convex optimization techniques to develop low-complexity power allocation solutions involving only the channel statistics. Necessary and sufficient optimality conditions are derived, from which we develop an iterative water-filling algorithm with guaranteed convergence. Simulations demonstrate the tightness of the capacity upper bound and the near-optimal performance of the proposed low-complexity transmitter optimization approach.

Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Tripod-type Atom System

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon in a four level atomic system with tripod configuration is studied. The results show that this configuration is equivalent to the combination of two single three-level $Λ$ configurations, which, under certain conditions, results in the so-called double-EIT (DEIT) phenomenon. The properties of the double transparency windows for DEIT are discussed in detail and the possible experimental scheme is proposed.

Detuned Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in an $N$-type Atom

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an $N$ configuration is studied under both resonant and off-resonant conditions. In a certain off-resonant condition the dark state of the four level system, which is almost the same as the resonant dark state in $Λ$ configuration, is rebuilt. The actual system with damping is examined using optical Bloch equation, both numerically and analytically. Based on this detuned dark state, some new applications with frequency shifts can be realized.

Effects of dynamical phases in Shor's factoring algorithm with operational delays

Ideal quantum algorithms usually assume that quantum computing is performed continuously by a sequence of unitary transformations. However, there always exist idle finite time intervals between consecutive operations in a realistic quantum computing process. During these delays, coherent "errors" will accumulate from the dynamical phases of the superposed wave functions. Here we explore the sensitivity of Shor's quantum factoring algorithm to such errors. Our results clearly show a severe sensitivity of Shor's factorization algorithm to the presence of delay times between successive unitary transformations. Specifically, in the presence of these {\it coherent "errors"}, the probability of obtaining the correct answer decreases exponentially with the number of qubits of the work register. A particularly simple phase-matching approach is proposed in this paper to {\it avoid} or suppress these {\it coherent errors} when using Shor's algorithm to factorize integers. The robustness of this phase-matching condition is evaluated analytically or numerically for the factorization of several integers: $4, 15, 21$, and 33.
