Existence and uniqueness for plane stationary Navier-Stokes flows with compactly supported force

We study the stationary Navier--Stokes equations in the whole plane with a compactly supported force term and with a prescribed constant spatial limit. Prior to this work, existence of solutions to this problem was only known under special symmetry and smallness assumptions. In the paper we solve the key difficulties in applying Leray's {\it invading domains method} and, as a consequence, prove the existence of $D$-solutions in the whole plane for arbitrary compactly supported force. The boundary condition at infinity are verified in two different scenarios: (I) the~limiting velocity is sufficient large with respect to the external force, (II) both the total integral of force and the~limiting velocity vanish. Hence, our method produces large class of new solutions with prescribed spatial limits. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of $D$-solutions to this problem in a perturbative regime. The main tools here are two new estimates for general Navier-Stokes solutions, which have rather simple forms. They control the difference between mean values of the velocity over two concentric circles in terms of the Dirichlet integral in the annulus between them.

Radiation of the energy-critical wave equation with compact support

We prove exterior energy lower bounds for (nonradial) solutions to the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation in space dimensions $3 \le d \le 5$, with compactly supported initial data. In particular, it is shown that nontrivial global solutions with compact spatial support must be radiative in the sense that at least one of the following is true: (1) $\int_{|x|> |t|} \left( |\partial_t u|^2 + |\nabla u|^2 \right) \mathrm{d}x \ge η_1(u) > 0, \ \mathrm{for} \ \mathrm{all} \ t \ge 0 \ \mathrm{or} \ \mathrm{all} \ t \le 0,$ (2) $\int_{|x|> -\varepsilon +|t|} \left( |\partial_t u|^2 + |\nabla u|^2 \right) \mathrm{d}x \ge η_2(\varepsilon, u) > 0, \ \mathrm{for} \ \mathrm{all} \ t \in \mathbb{R}, \varepsilon > 0.$ In space dimensions 3 and 4, a nontrivial soliton background is also considered. As an application, we obtain partial results on the rigidity conjecture concerning solutions with the compactness property, including a new proof for the global existence of such solutions.

Leray's plane stationary solutions at small Reynolds numbers

In the celebrated paper by Jean Leray, published in JMPA journal in 1933, the invading domains method was proposed to construct D-solutions for the stationary Navier-Stokes flow around obstacle problem. In two dimensions, whether Leray's D-solution achieves the prescribed limiting velocity at spatial infinity became a major open problem since then. In this paper, we solve this problem at small Reynolds numbers. The proof builds on a novel blow-down argument which rescales the invading domains to the unit disc, and the ideas developed in a recent paper [Korobkov-Pileckas-Russo2020], where the nontriviality of Leray solutions in the general case was proved, and [Korobkov-Ren-2021], where the uniqueness result for small Reynolds number was established.

A Liouville Theorem for Axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes Equations on $\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{T}^1$

We establish a Liouville theorem for bounded mild ancient solutions to the axi-symmetric incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on $(-\infty, 0] \times (\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{T}^1)$. This is a step forward to completely solve the conjecture on $(-\infty, 0] \times \mathbb{R}^3$ which was made in \cite{KNSS} to describe the potential singularity structures of the Cauchy problem.

On the Constantin-Lax-Majda Model with Convection

The well-known Constantin-Lax-Majda (CLM) equation, an important toy model of the 3D Euler equations without convection, can develop finite time singularities [5]. De Gregorio modified the CLM model by adding a convective term [6], which is known important for fluid dynamics [10,14]. Presented are two results on the De Gregorio model. The first one is the global well-posedness of such a model for general initial data with non-negative (or non-positive) vorticity which is based on a newly discovered conserved quantity. This verifies the numerical observations for such class of initial data. The second one is an exponential stability result of ground states, which is similar to the recent significant work of Jia, Steward and Sverak [11], with the zero mean constraint on the initial data being removable. The novelty of the method is the introduction of the new solution space $\mathcal{H}_{DW}$ together with a new basis and an effective inner product of $\mathcal{H}_{DW}$.

On ancient periodic solutions to Axially-Symmetric Navier-Stokes Equations

An old problem asks whether bounded mild ancient solutions of the 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are constants. While the full 3 dimensional problem seems out of reach, in the works \cite{KNSS, SS09}, the authors expressed their belief that the following conjecture should be true. For incompressible axially-symmetric Navier-Stokes equations (ASNS) in three dimensions: \textit{bounded mild ancient solutions are constant}. Understanding of such solutions could play useful roles in the study of global regularity of solutions to the ASNS. In this article, we essentially prove this conjecture in the special case that $u$ is periodic in $z$. To the best of our knowledge, this seems to be the first result on this conjecture without unverified decay condition. It also shows that periodic solutions are not models of possible singularity or high velocity region. Some partial result in the non-periodic case is also given.

Barkhausen effect in the first order structural phase transition in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

We report the first observation of the non-magnetic Barkhausen effect in van der Waals layered crystals, specifically, between the Td and 1T' phases in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. Thinning down the MoTe2 crystal from bulk material to about 25nm results in a drastic strengthening of the hysteresis in the phase transition, with the difference in critical temperature increasing from 40K to more than 300K. The Barkhausen effect appears for thin samples and the temperature range of the Barkhausen zone grows approximately linearly with reducing sample thickness, pointing to a surface origin of the phase pinning defects. The distribution of the Barkhausen jumps shows a power law behavior, with its critical exponent α = 1.27, in good agreement with existing scaling theory. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy on MoTe2 crystals of various thicknesses shows results consistent with our transport measurements.

Raman scattering study of tetragonal magnetic phase in Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$: structural symmetry and electronic gap

We use inelastic light scattering to study Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($x\approx0.34$), which exhibits a robust tetragonal magnetic phase that restores the four-fold rotation symmetry inside the orthorhombic magnetic phase. With cooling, we observe splitting and recombination of an $E_g$ phonon peak upon entering the orthorhombic and tetragonal magnetic phases, respectively, consistent with the reentrant phase behavior. Our electronic Raman data reveal a pronounced feature that is clearly associated with the tetragonal magnetic phase, suggesting the opening of an electronic gap. No phonon back-folding behavior can be detected above the noise level, which implies that any lattice translation symmetry breaking in the tetragonal magnetic phase must be very weak.

Spin-wave excitations evidencing the Kitaev interaction in single crystalline $α$-RuCl$_3$

Kitaev interactions underlying a quantum spin liquid have been long sought, but experimental data from which their strengths can be determined directly is still lacking. Here, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$, we observe spin-wave spectra with a gap of $\sim$2 meV around the M point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We derive an effective-spin model in the strong-coupling limit based on energy bands obtained from first-principle calculations, and find that the anisotropic Kitaev interaction $K$ term and the isotropic antiferromagentic off-diagonal exchange interaction $Γ$ term are significantly larger than the Heisenberg exchange coupling $J$ term. Our experimental data can be well fit using an effective-spin model with $K=-6.8$ meV and $Γ=9.5$ meV. These results demonstrate explicitly that Kitaev physics is realized in real materials.

Raman signatures of inversion symmetry breaking and structural phase transition in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

Transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ is an important candidate for realizing the newly predicted type-IIWeyl fermions, for which the breaking of the inversion symmetry is a prerequisite. Here we present direct spectroscopic evidence for the inversion symmetry breaking in the low temperature phase of MoTe$_2$ by systematic Raman experiments and first principles calculations. We identify five lattice vibrational modes which are Raman active only in noncentrosymmetric structure at low temperature. A hysteresis is also observed in the peak intensity of inversion symmetry activated Raman modes, confirming a temperature induced structural phase transition with a concomitant change in the inversion symmetry. Our results provide definitive evidence for the low temperature noncentrosymmetric T$_d$ phase from vibrational spectroscopy, and suggest MoTe$_2$ as an ideal candidate for investigating the temperature induced topological phase transition.

Nematic magnetoelastic effect contrasted between Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ and FeSe

To elucidate the origin of nematic order in Fe-based superconductors, we report a Raman scattering study of lattice dynamics, which quantify the extent of $C_4$-symmetry breaking, in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and FeSe. FeSe possesses a nematic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{s}$ and orbital-related band-energy split below $T_\mathrm{s}$ that are similar to those in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, but unlike BaFe$_2$As$_2$ it has no long-range magnetic order. We find that the $E_g$ phonon-energy split in FeSe sets in only well below $T_\mathrm{s}$, and its saturated value is substantially smaller than that in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Together with reported results for the Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ family, the data suggest that magnetism exerts a major influence on the lattice.

Nematic crossover in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under uniaxial stress

Raman scattering can detect spontaneous point-group symmetry breaking without resorting to single-domain samples. Here we use this technique to study $\mathrm{BaFe_2As_2}$, the parent compound of the "122" Fe-based superconductors. We show that an applied compression along the Fe-Fe direction, which is commonly used to produce untwinned orthorhombic samples, changes the structural phase transition at temperature $T_{\mathrm{s}}$ into a crossover that spans a considerable temperature range above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Even in crystals that are not subject to any applied force, a distribution of substantial residual stress remains, which may explain phenomena that are seemingly indicative of symmetry breaking above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Our results are consistent with an onset of spontaneous nematicity only below $T_{\mathrm{s}}$.

Charge density waves and phonon-electron coupling in ZrTe$_3$ investigated by Raman spectroscopy and first-principles calculations

Charge-density-wave (CDW) order has long been interpreted as arising from a Fermi-surface instability in the parent metallic phase. While phonon-electron coupling has been suggested to influence the formation of CDW order in quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) systems, the presumed dominant importance of Fermi-surface nesting remains largely unquestioned in quasi-1D systems. Here we show that phonon-electron coupling is also important for the CDW formation in a model quasi-1D system ZrTe$_3$. Our joint experimental and computational study reveals that particular lattice vibrational patterns possess exceedingly strong coupling to the conduction electrons, and are directly linked to the lattice distortions associated with the CDW order. The dependence of the coupling matrix elements on electron momentum further dictates the opening of (partial) electronic gaps in the CDW phase. Since lattice distortions and electronic gaps are the defining signatures of CDW order, our result demonstrates that the conventional wisdom based on Fermi-surface geometry needs to be substantially supplemented by phonon-electron coupling even in the simplest quasi-1D case. As prerequisites for the CDW formation, the highly anisotropic electronic structure and strong phonon-electron coupling in ZrTe$_3$ give rise to a distinct Raman scattering effect, namely, measured phonon linewidths depend on the direction of momentum transfer in the scattering process.
