Unlikely intersections in families of polynomial skew products

Motivated by the study of unlikely intersection in the moduli space of rational maps, we initiate our investigation on algebraic dynamics for families of regular polynomial skew products in this article. Our goals are threefold. (1) We classify special loci -- which contain a Zariski dense set of postcritically finite points -- in the moduli space of quadratic regular polynomial skew products. More precisely, special loci include families of homogeneous polynomial endomorphisms, families of split endomorphisms, and polynomial endomorphisms of the form $(x^2,y^2+bx)$ up to conjugacy. As a consequence, we verify a special case of a conjecture proposed by Zhong. (2) Let $F_t$ be a family of regular polynomial skew products defined over a number field $K$ and let $P_t, Q_t\in K[t]\times K[t]$ be two initial marked points. We introduce a good height $h_{P_t}(t)$ which is built from the theory of adelic line bundles for quasi projective varieties. We show that the set of parameters $t_0\in \overline{K}$ for which $P_{t_0}$ and $Q_{t_0}$ are simultaneously $F_{t_0}$-preperiodic is infinite if and only if $h_{P_t}=h_{Q_t}$. (3) As an application of $h_{P_t}$, we show that, under some degree conditions of $P_t$, if there is an infinite set of parameters $t_0$ for which the marked point $P_{t_0}$ is preperiodic under $F_{t_0}$, then the Zariski closure of the forward orbit of $P_t$ lives in a proper subvariety of $\mathbb{P}^2$. As a by-product, we conditionally verify a special case of a conjecture of DeMarco--Mavraki which is a relative version of the Dynamical Manin--Mumford Conjecture.

Dynamical GCD Problems and a Variant of the Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture

In \cite{NZ25}, the authors resolved the rational function analogue of the finiteness results for greatest common divisors of iterates of polynomials established in \cite{HT17}. These results may be viewed as dynamical generalizations of a classical problem concerning upper bounds for the greatest common divisors (GCDs) of two integer sequences studied by Bugeaud, Corvaja, and Zannier. The most delicate case arises when the maps involved are automorphisms, where the methods of \cite{NZ25} and \cite{HT17} rely heavily on Diophantine approximation and asymptotic analysis. In the present paper, we develop an alternative approach to the automorphism case. This method is more powerful, allowing us to give complete answers to the further questions posed in \cite{HT17}. In particular, we strengthen the main theorem of \cite{HT17} and provide an alternative proof of the main theorem of \cite{NZ25} in the automorphism setting. Moreover, we relate this dynamical GCD problem to a special case of a higher-dimensional generalization of the Dynamical Mordell--Lang Conjecture proposed by Junyi Xie. We establish this generalized conjecture when the dynamics arise from algebraic group actions. In addition, we resolve the corresponding special case associated with dynamical GCD questions when the maps involved are polynomials.

A finiteness result for common zeros of iterates of rational maps

Answering a question asked by Hsia and Tucker in their paper on the finiteness of greatest common divisors of iterates of polynomials, we prove that if $f, g \in \mathbb{C}(X)$ are compositionally independent rational functions and $c \in \mathbb{C}(X)$, then there are at most finitely many $λ\in\mathbb{C}$ with the property that there is an $n$ such that $f^n(λ) = g^n(λ) = c(λ)$, except for a few families of $f, g \in Aut(\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{C})$ which gives counterexamples.

Dimer Models and Conformal Structures

In this work we study the variational problem associated to dimer models, a class of models from integrable probability and statistical mechanics in dimension two which have been the focus of intense research efforts over the last decades. These models give rise to an infinite family of non-differentiable functionals on Lipschitz functions with gradient constraint, determined by solutions of the Dirichlet problem on compact convex polygons for a class of Monge-Ampère equations. We settle a number or outstanding open questions for this infinite class functionals. In particular we prove a complete classification of the regularity of minimizers, also known as height functions, for all dimer models for a natural class of polygonal (simply or multiply connected) domains much studied in numerical simulations and elsewhere. Our classification in particular implies that the Pokrovsky-Talapov law holds for all dimer models at a generic point on the frozen boundary and in addition shows a very strong local rigidity of dimer models which can be interpreted as a geometric universality result. Furthermore, we give a complete classification of the regularity of the associated free boundary, also known in the literature as frozen boundary or arctic curves and prove that they are all algebraic curves. The lack of differentiability of the functionals is intimately connected to the boundary behaviour of the solutions to the Monge-Ampère equations and we prove a complete classification for these, of independent interest.

Polynomial endomorphisms of $\A^2$ with many periodic curves

In this paper, we prove that for a regular polynomial endomorphism of positive degree on $\mathbb{P}^2$, a family of curves containing a Zariski dense set of periodic curves is invariant under some iterate of the endomorphism. The setting is closely related to the Relative Dynamical Manin-Mumford Conjecture, recently proposed by DeMarco and Mavraki, which concerns a parametrized family of endomorphisms and varieties. Our result proves a weaker version of the conjecture where the endomorphism is a regular polynomial endomorphism on $\mathbb{P}^2$ that remains fixed in the family, and the family of curves contains a dense set of periodic curves. This result can also be viewed as a Dynamical Manin-Mumford type statement on the moduli space of divisors, and it proves a special case of the Dynamical Manin-Mumford Conjecture with a stronger assumption. Moreover, our result specifically implies a uniform degree stabilization statement for a generic set of curves in a family under the transformation of a regular polynomial endomorphism. We demonstrate that a more general degree stabilization statement for a family of positive dimension subvarieties in $\mathbb{P}^K$ under the transformation of a family of endomorphisms is predicted by the Relative Dynamical Manin-Mumford Conjecture. We then prove that it is true when $K=2$ for families of regular polynomial endomorphisms under certain restrictions on the ramifications at the line at infinity. Finally, we demonstrate an application of our result to classify all regular polynomial endomorphisms that admit infinitely many periodic curves of bounded degree.

Towards Common Zeros of Iterated Morphisms

Recently, the authors have proved the finiteness of common zeros of two iterated rational maps under some compositional independence assumptions. In this article, we advance towards a question of Hsia and Tucker on a Zariski non-density of common zeros of iterated morphisms on a variety. More precisely, we provide an affirmative answer in the case of Hénon type maps on $\mathbb{A}^2$, endomorphisms on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$, and polynomial skew products on $\mathbb{A}^2$ defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. As a by-product, we prove a Tits' alternative analogy for semigroups generated by two regular polynomial skew products.

Preimages Question for Surjective Endomorphisms on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$

Let $K$ be a number field and let $f : (\mathbb{P}^1)^n \to (\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ be a dominant endomorphism defined over $K$. We show that if $V$ is an $f$-invariant subvariety (that is, $f(V)=V$) then there is a positive integer $s_0$ such that $ (f^{-s-1}(V)\setminus f^{-s}(V))(K) = \emptyset$ for every integer $s \geq s_0$, answering the Preimages Question of Matsuzawa, Meng, Shibata, and Zhang in the case of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$.

Counting points by height in semigroup orbits

We improve known estimates for the number of points of bounded height in semigroup orbits of polarized dynamical systems. In particular, we give exact asymptotics for generic semigroups acting on the projective line. The main new ingredient is the Wiener-Ikehara Tauberian theorem, which we use to count functions in semigroups of bounded degree.

Regularity theory of quasilinear elliptic and parabolic equations in the Heisenberg group

This note provides a succinct survey of the existing literature concerning the Hölder regularity for the gradient of weak solutions of PDEs of the form $$\sum_{i=1}^{2n} X_i A_i(\nabla_0 u)=0 \text{ and } \partial_t u= \sum_{i=1}^{2n} X_i A_i(\nabla_0 u)$$ modeled on the $p$-Laplacian in a domain $Ω$ in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$, with $1\le p <\infty$, and of its parabolic counterpart. We present some open problems and outline some of the difficulties they present.

Dynamical Cancellation of Polynomials

Extending the work of Bell, Matsuzawa and Satriano, we consider a finite set of polynomials $S$ over a number field $K$ and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a $N \in \mathbb{N}_{> 0}$ and a finite set $Z \subset \mathbb{P}^1_K \times \mathbb{P}^1_K$ such that for any $(a,b) \in (\mathbb{P}^1_K \times \mathbb{P}^1_K) \setminus Z$ we have the cancellation result: if $k>N$ and $ϕ_1,\ldots ,ϕ_k$ are maps in $S$ such that $ϕ_{k} \circ \dots \circ ϕ_1 (a) = ϕ_k \circ \dots \circ ϕ_1(b)$, then in fact $ϕ_N \circ \dots \circ ϕ_1(a) = ϕ_N \circ \dots \circ ϕ_1(b)$. Moreover, the conditions we give for this cancellation result to hold can be checked by a finite number of computations from the given set of polynomials.

Lipschitz regularity for solutions of the parabolic $p$-Laplacian in the Heisenberg group

We prove local Lipschitz regularity for weak solutions to a class of degenerate parabolic PDEs modeled on the parabolic $p$-Laplacian $$\p_t u= \sum_{i=1}^{2n} X_i (|\nabla_0 u|^{p-2} X_i u),$$ in a cylinder $Ω\times \R^+$, where $Ω$ is domain in the Heisenberg group $\Hn$, and $2\le p \le 4$. The result continues to hold in the more general setting of contact sub-Riemannian manifolds.

$p$-Adic interpolation of orbits under rational maps

Let $L$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $h:\mathbb{P}^1\to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a rational map defined over $L$, and let $c\in \mathbb{P}^1(L)$. We show that there exists a finitely generated subfield $K$ of $L$ over which both $c$ and $h$ are defined along with an infinite set of inequivalent non-archimedean completions $K_{\mathfrak{p}}$ for which there exists a positive integer $a=a(\mathfrak{p})$ with the property that for $i\in \{0,\ldots ,a-1\}$ there exists a power series $g_i(t)\in K_{\mathfrak{p}}[[t]]$ that converges on the closed unit disc of $K_{\mathfrak{p}}$ such that $h^{an+i}(c)=g_i(n)$ for all sufficiently large $n$. As a consequence we show that the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture holds for split self-maps $(h,g)$ of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times X$ with $g$ étale.

Quadratic reciprocity from a family of adelic conformal field theories

We consider a deformation of the two-dimensional free scalar field theory by raising the Laplacian to a positive real power. It turns out that the resulting non-local generalized free action is invariant under two commuting actions of the global conformal symmetry algebra, although it is no longer invariant under the full Witt algebra. Furthermore, there is an adelic version of this family of conformal field theories, parameterized by the choice of a number field, together with a Hecke character. Tate's thesis gives the Green's functions of these theories, and ensures that these Green's functions satisfy an adelic product formula. In particular, the local $L$-factors contribute to the prefactors of these Green's functions. Quadratic reciprocity turns out to be a consequence of an adelic version of a holomorphic factorization property of this family of theories on a quadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We explain that at the Archimedean place, the desired holomorphic factorization follows from the global conformal symmetry.

Massless $p2$-brane modes and the critical line

We consider a $p2$-brane model as a theory of maps from the vertices of the Bruhat-Tits tree times $\mathbb{Z}$ into $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show that in order for the worldsheet time evolution to be unitary, a certain spectral parameter of the model must localize at special loci in the complex plane, which include the (0,1) interval and the critical line of real part $1/2$. The excitations of the model are supported at these loci, with commutation relations closely resembling those of the usual bosonic string. We show that the usual Hamiltonian, momentum, and angular momentum are conserved quantities, and the Poincaré algebra is obeyed. Assuming an Euler product relation for the spectrum, the Riemann zeta zeros on the critical line have spectral interpretation as the massless photon and graviton in the Archimedean theory.

Green's Functions for Vladimirov Derivatives and Tate's Thesis

Given a number field $K$ with a Hecke character $χ$, for each place $ν$ we study the free scalar field theory whose kinetic term is given by the regularized Vladimirov derivative associated to the local component of $χ$. These theories appear in the study of $p$-adic string theory and $p$-adic AdS/CFT correspondence. We prove a formula for the regularized Vladimirov derivative in terms of the Fourier conjugate of the local component of $χ$. We find that the Green's function is given by the local functional equation for Zeta integrals. Furthermore, considering all places $ν$, the field theory two-point functions corresponding to the Green's functions satisfy an adelic product formula, which is equivalent to the global functional equation for Zeta integrals. In particular, this points out a role of Tate's thesis in adelic physics.

Bounds on the Ricci curvature and solutions to the Einstein equations for weighted graphs

This is a preliminary study of the equation of motion of Euclidean classical gravity on a graph, based on the Lin-Lu-Yau Ricci curvature on graphs. We observe that the constant edge weights configuration gives the unique solution on an infinite tree w.r.t. the asymptotically constant boundary condition. We study the minimum and maximum of the action w.r.t. certain boundary conditions, on several types of graphs of interest. We also exhibit a new class of solutions to the equations of motion on the infinite regular tree.

Quantitative gradient estimates for harmonic maps into singular spaces

In this paper, we will show the Yau's gradient estimate for harmonic maps into a metric space $(X,d_X)$ with curvature bounded above by a constant $κ$, $κ\geq0$, in the sense of Alexandrov. As a direct application, it gives some Liouville theorems for such harmonic maps. This extends the works of S. Y. Cheng [4] and H. I. Choi [5] to harmonic maps into singular spaces.

On the local boundedness of generalized minimizers of variational problems with linear growth

We prove local boundedness of generalized solutions to a large class of variational problems of linear growth including boundary value problems of minimal surface type and models from image analysis related to the procedure of TV-regularization occurring in connection with the denoising of images, which might even be coupled with an inpainting process. Our main argument relies on a Moser-type iteration procedure.
