Diversifying Dialogue Generation with Non-Conversational Text

Neural network-based sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) models strongly suffer from the low-diversity problem when it comes to open-domain dialogue generation. As bland and generic utterances usually dominate the frequency distribution in our daily chitchat, avoiding them to generate more interesting responses requires complex data filtering, sampling techniques or modifying the training objective. In this paper, we propose a new perspective to diversify dialogue generation by leveraging non-conversational text. Compared with bilateral conversations, non-conversational text are easier to obtain, more diverse and cover a much broader range of topics. We collect a large-scale non-conversational corpus from multi sources including forum comments, idioms and book snippets. We further present a training paradigm to effectively incorporate these text via iterative back translation. The resulting model is tested on two conversational datasets and is shown to produce significantly more diverse responses without sacrificing the relevance with context.

ASAS J174406+2446.8 is identified as a marginal-contact binary with a possible cool third body

ASAS J174406+2446.8 was originally found as a $δ$ Scuti-type pulsating star with the period P=0.189068 $days$ by ASAS survey. However, the LAMOST stellar parameters reveal that it is far beyond the red edge of pulsational instability strip on the $\log g-T$ diagram of $δ$ Scuti pulsating stars. To understand the physical properties of the variable star, we observed it by the 1.0-m Cassegrain reflecting telescope at Yunnan Observatories. Multi-color light curves in B, V, R$_{c}$ and I$_{c}$ bands were obtained and are analyzed by using the W-D program. It is found that this variable star is a shallow-contact binary with an EB-type light curve and an orbital period of 0.3781\,days rather than a $δ$ Scuti star. It is a W-subtype contact binary with a mass ratio of $1.135(\pm0.019)$ and a fill-out factor of $10.4(\pm5.6)\,\%$. The situation of ASAS J174406+2446.8 resembles those of other EB-type marginal-contact binaries such as UU Lyn, II Per and GW Tau. All of them are at a key evolutionary phase from a semi-detached configuration to a contact system predicted by the thermal relaxation oscillation theory. The linear ephemeris was corrected by using 303 new determined times of light minimum. It is detected that the O - C curve shows a sinusoidal variationthat could be explained by the light-travel-time effect via the presence of a cool red dwarf. The present investigation reveals that some of the $δ$ Scuti-type stars beyond the red edge of pulsating instability strip on the $\log g-T$ diagram are misclassified eclipsing binaries. To understand their structures and evolutionary states, more studies are required in the future.

Photometric investigation on the W-subtype contact binary V1197 Her

Multi-color light curves of V1197 Her were obtained with the 2.4 meter optical telescope at Thai National Observatory and the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) program is used to model the observational light curves. The photometric solutions reveal that V1197 Her is a W-subtype shallow contact binary system with a mass ratio of $q = 2.61 $ and fill-out factor to be $f = 15.7\,\%$. The temperature difference between the primary star and secondary star is only $140K$ in spite of the low degree of contact, which means that V1197 Her is not only in geometrical contact configuration but also already under thermal contact status. The orbital inclination of V1197 Her is as high as $i = 82.7^{\circ}$, and the primary star is completely eclipsed at the primary minimum. The totally eclipsing characteristic implies that the determined physical parameters are highly reliable. The masses, radii and luminosities of the primary star (star 1) and secondary star (star 2) are estimated to be $M_{1} = 0.30(1)M_\odot$, $M_{2} = 0.77(2)M_\odot$, $R_{1} = 0.54(1)R_\odot$, $R_{2} = 0.83(1)R_\odot$, $L_{1} = 0.18(1)L_\odot$ and $L_{2} = 0.38(1)L_\odot$. The evolutionary status of the two component stars are drawn in the H - R diagram, which shows that the less massive but hotter primary star is more evolved than the secondary star. The period of V1197 Her is decreasing continuously at a rate of $dP/dt=-2.58\times{10^{-7}}day\cdot year^{-1}$, which can be explained by mass transfer from the more massive star to the less massive one with a rate of $\frac{dM_{2}}{dt}=- 1.61\times{10^{-7}}M_\odot/year$. The light curves of V1197 Her is reported to have the O'Connell effect. Thus, a cool spot is added to the massive star to model the asymmetry on light curves.

Collaborative Metric Learning with Memory Network for Multi-Relational Recommender Systems

The success of recommender systems in modern online platforms is inseparable from the accurate capture of users' personal tastes. In everyday life, large amounts of user feedback data are created along with user-item online interactions in a variety of ways, such as browsing, purchasing, and sharing. These multiple types of user feedback provide us with tremendous opportunities to detect individuals' fine-grained preferences. Different from most existing recommender systems that rely on a single type of feedback, we advocate incorporating multiple types of user-item interactions for better recommendations. Based on the observation that the underlying spectrum of user preferences is reflected in various types of interactions with items and can be uncovered by latent relational learning in metric space, we propose a unified neural learning framework, named Multi-Relational Memory Network (MRMN). It can not only model fine-grained user-item relations but also enable us to discriminate between feedback types in terms of the strength and diversity of user preferences. Extensive experiments show that the proposed MRMN model outperforms competitive state-of-the-art algorithms in a wide range of scenarios, including e-commerce, local services, and job recommendations.

Topic-Enhanced Memory Networks for Personalised Point-of-Interest Recommendation

Point-of-Interest (POI) recommender systems play a vital role in people's lives by recommending unexplored POIs to users and have drawn extensive attention from both academia and industry. Despite their value, however, they still suffer from the challenges of capturing complicated user preferences and fine-grained user-POI relationship for spatio-temporal sensitive POI recommendation. Existing recommendation algorithms, including both shallow and deep approaches, usually embed the visiting records of a user into a single latent vector to model user preferences: this has limited power of representation and interpretability. In this paper, we propose a novel topic-enhanced memory network (TEMN), a deep architecture to integrate the topic model and memory network capitalising on the strengths of both the global structure of latent patterns and local neighbourhood-based features in a nonlinear fashion. We further incorporate a geographical module to exploit user-specific spatial preference and POI-specific spatial influence to enhance recommendations. The proposed unified hybrid model is widely applicable to various POI recommendation scenarios. Extensive experiments on real-world WeChat datasets demonstrate its effectiveness (improvement ratio of 3.25% and 29.95% for context-aware and sequential recommendation, respectively). Also, qualitative analysis of the attention weights and topic modeling provides insight into the model's recommendation process and results.

When Energy Trading meets Blockchain in Electrical Power System: The State of the Art

With the rapid growth of renewable energy resources, the energy trading began to shift from centralized to distributed manner. Blockchain, as a distributed public ledger technology, has been widely adopted to design new energy trading schemes. However, there are many challenging issues for blockchain-based energy trading, i.e., low efficiency, high transaction cost, security & privacy issues. To tackle with the above challenges, many solutions have been proposed. In this survey, the blockchain-based energy trading in electrical power system is thoroughly investigated. Firstly, the challenges in blockchain-based energy trading are identified. Then, the existing energy trading schemes are studied and classified into three categories based on their main focus: energy transaction, consensus mechanism, and system optimization. And each category is presented in detail. Although existing schemes can meet the specific energy trading requirements, there are still many unsolved problems. Finally, the discussion and future directions are given.

Complexity of Reconfiguration Problems for Constraint Satisfaction

Constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is a well-studied combinatorial search problem, in which we are asked to find an assignment of values to given variables so as to satisfy all of given constraints. We study a reconfiguration variant of CSP, in which we are given an instance of CSP together with its two satisfying assignments, and asked to determine whether one assignment can be transformed into the other by changing a single variable assignment at a time, while always remaining satisfying assignment. This problem generalizes several well-studied reconfiguration problems such as Boolean satisfiability reconfiguration, vertex coloring reconfiguration, homomorphism reconfiguration. In this paper, we study the problem from the viewpoints of polynomial-time solvability and parameterized complexity, and give several interesting boundaries of tractable and intractable cases.

Photometric Investigation of the Contact Binary GU Ori with High Metallicity

GU Ori was observed with the 1m telescope at Yunnan Observatories in 2005. To determine its physical properties, the Wilson-Devinney program is used. The results reveal that GU Ori is a W-subtype shallow contact binary with a more massive but cooler star 2. The mass of its two component stars are estimated to be $M_1 = 0.45M_\odot$, $M_2 = 1.05M_\odot$. The O'Connell effect was reported to be negative on the light curves observed in 2005. However, it changed to a positive one on the light curves observed from 2011 to 2012. The mean surface temperatures of star 2 ($T_2$) determined by the two sets of light curves were different, which may result from stellar activities. The O - C diagram shows that the period of GU Ori is decreasing at a rate of $dP/dt=-6.24\times{10^{-8}}day\cdot year^{-1}$, which may be caused by mass transfer from star 2 to star 1 with a rate of $\frac{dM_{2}}{dt}= - 2.98\times{10^{-8}}M_\odot/year$. GU Ori is a contact binary with quite high metallicity.

Evaluating the impact of the 2012 Olympic Games policy on the regeneration of East London using spatio-temporal big data

For urban governments, introducing policies has long been adopted as a main approach to instigate regeneration processes, and to promote social mixing and vitality within the city. However, due to the absence of large fine-grained datasets, the effects of these policies have been historically hard to evaluate. In this research, we illustrate how a combination of large-scale datasets, the Index of Deprivation and Foursquare data (an online geo-social network service) could be used to investigate the impact of the 2012 Olympic Games on the regeneration of East London neighbourhoods. We study and quantify both the physical and socio-economic aspects of this, where our empirical findings suggest that the target areas did indeed undergo regeneration after the Olympic project in some ways. In general, the growth rate of Foursquare venue density in Olympic host boroughs is higher than the city's average level since the preparation period of the Games and up to two years after the event. Furthermore, the deprivation levels in East London boroughs also saw improvements in various aspects after the Olympic Games. One negative outcome we notice is that the housing affordability becomes even more of an issue in East London areas with the regeneration gradually unfolding.

Detecting Socio-Economic Impact of Cultural Investment Through Geo-Social Network Analysis

Taking advantage of nearly 4 million transition records for three years in London from a popular location-based social network service, Foursquare, we study how to track the impact and measure the effectiveness of cultural investment in small urban areas. We reveal the underlying relationships between socio-economic status, local cultural expenditure, and network features extracted from user mobility trajectories. This research presents how geo-social and mobile services more generally can be used as a proxy to track local changes as government financial effort is put in developing urban areas, and thus gives evidence and suggestions for further policy-making and investment optimization.

Discovering Latent Patterns of Urban Cultural Interactions in WeChat for Modern City Planning

Cultural activity is an inherent aspect of urban life and the success of a modern city is largely determined by its capacity to offer generous cultural entertainment to its citizens. To this end, the optimal allocation of cultural establishments and related resources across urban regions becomes of vital importance, as it can reduce financial costs in terms of planning and improve quality of life in the city, more generally. In this paper, we make use of a large longitudinal dataset of user location check-ins from the online social network WeChat to develop a data-driven framework for cultural planning in the city of Beijing. We exploit rich spatio-temporal representations on user activity at cultural venues and use a novel extended version of the traditional latent Dirichlet allocation model that incorporates temporal information to identify latent patterns of urban cultural interactions. Using the characteristic typologies of mobile user cultural activities emitted by the model, we determine the levels of demand for different types of cultural resources across urban areas. We then compare those with the corresponding levels of supply as driven by the presence and spatial reach of cultural venues in local areas to obtain high resolution maps that indicate urban regions with lack of cultural resources, and thus give suggestions for further urban cultural planning and investment optimisation.

Cultural Investment and Urban Socio-Economic Development: A Geo-Social Network Approach

Being able to assess the impact of government-led investment onto socio-economic indicators in cities has long been an important target of urban planning. However, due to the lack of large-scale data with a fine spatio-temporal resolution, there have been limitations in terms of how planners can track the impact and measure the effectiveness of cultural investment in small urban areas. Taking advantage of nearly 4 million transition records for three years in London from a popular location-based social network service, Foursquare, we study how the socio-economic impact of government cultural expenditure can be detected and predicted. Our analysis shows that network indicators such as average clustering coefficient or centrality can be exploited to estimate the likelihood of local growth in response to cultural investment. We subsequently integrate these features in supervised learning models to infer socio-economic deprivation changes for London's neighbourhoods. This research presents how geo-social and mobile services can be used as a proxy to track and predict socio-economic deprivation changes as government financial effort is put in developing urban areas and thus gives evidence and suggestions for further policy-making and investment optimisation.

Heuristic Search for Structural Constraints in Data Association

The research on multi-object tracking (MOT) is essentially to solve for the data association assignment, the core of which is to design the association cost as discriminative as possible. Generally speaking, the match ambiguities caused by similar appearances of objects and the moving cameras make the data association perplexing and challenging. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic method to search for structural constraints (HSSC) of multiple targets when solving the problem of online multi-object tracking. We believe that the internal structure among multiple targets in the adjacent frames could remain constant and stable even though the video sequences are captured by a moving camera. As a result, the structural constraints are able to cut down the match ambiguities caused by the moving cameras as well as similar appearances of the tracked objects. The proposed heuristic method aims to obtain a maximum match set under the minimum structural cost for each available match pair, which can be integrated with the raw association costs and make them more elaborate and discriminative compared with other approaches. In addition, this paper presents a new method to recover missing targets by minimizing the cost function generated from both motion and structure cues. Our online multi-object tracking (MOT) algorithm based on HSSC has achieved the multi-object tracking accuracy (MOTA) of 25.0 on the public dataset 2DMOT2015[1].

Quantum state conversion in opto-electro-mechanical systems via shortcut to adiabaticity

Adiabatic process has found many important applications in modern physics, the distinct merit of which is that it does not need accurate control over the timing of the process. However, it is a slow process, which limits the application in quantum computation, due to the limited coherent times of typical quantum systems. Here, we propose a scheme to implement quantum state conversion in opto-electro-mechanical systems via shortcut to adiabaticity, where the process can be greatly speeded up while the precise timing control is still not necessary. In our scheme, only by modifying the coupling strength, we can achieve fast quantum state conversion with high fidelity, where the adiabatic condition does not need to be met. In addition, the population of the unwanted intermediate state can be further suppressed. Therefore, our protocol presents an important step towards practical state conversion between optical and microwave photons, and thus may find many important applications in hybrid quantum information processing.

Parameterized Complexity of the List Coloring Reconfiguration Problem with Graph Parameters

Let $G$ be a graph such that each vertex has its list of available colors, and assume that each list is a subset of the common set consisting of $k$ colors. For two given list colorings of $G$, we study the problem of transforming one into the other by changing only one vertex color assignment at a time, while at all times maintaining a list coloring. This problem is known to be PSPACE-complete even for bounded bandwidth graphs and a fixed constant $k$. In this paper, we study the fixed-parameter tractability of the problem when parameterized by several graph parameters. We first give a fixed-parameter algorithm for the problem when parameterized by $k$ and the modular-width of an input graph. We next give a fixed-parameter algorithm for the shortest variant when parameterized by $k$ and the size of a minimum vertex cover of an input graph. As corollaries, we show that the problem for cographs and the shortest variant for split graphs are fixed-parameter tractable even when only $k$ is taken as a parameter. On the other hand, we prove that the problem is W[1]-hard when parameterized only by the size of a minimum vertex cover of an input graph.

Multi-color photometric investigation of the totally eclipsing binary NO Cam

Multi-color photometric light curves of NO Cam in $V$ $R_C$ and $I_C$ bands are obtained and analyzed simultaneously using the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) program. The solutions suggest that NO Cam is an A-subtype overcontact binary with its mass ratio to be $q = 0.439$ and a contact degree of $f = 55.5\,\%$. The small temperature difference ($ΔT = 44K$) between its two components indicates that the system is under thermal contact. The high orbital inclination ($i = 84.5^{\circ}$) strengthens our confidence in the parameters determined from the light curves. All available times of minimum light are collected and period variations are analyzed for the first time. The $O - C$ curve reveals that its period is increasing continuously at a rate of $dP/dt=+1.46\times{10^{-9}}$, which can be explained by mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one. After the upward parabolic variation is subtracted, the residuals suggest that there may be a cyclic variation with a period of 2.23 years and an amplitude of $A_3 = 0.00153$ days, which may due to the light-travel time effect (LTTE) arising from the gravitational influence of a close-in tertiary component. The close-in companion reveals that early dynamic interaction among triple system may have played very important role in the formation of the W UMa type binaries.

Physical properties and evolutionary status of the W-subtype contact binary V502 Oph with a stellar companion

Multi-color ($B$ $V$ $R_c$ $I_c$) CCD photometric light curves of the contact binary V502 Oph are analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) program. The solutions reveal that V502 Oph is a W-subtype contact ($f = 35.3\,\%$) binary system. The temperature difference between its two components is $240K$ and the more massive star has a lower surface temperature. A cool spot is added in our model to account for the light curves' asymmetry (O'Connell effect) and third light is detected for the first time in the light curves' modeling. Combining the orbital inclination ($i = 76.4^{\circ}$) with the published mass function of V502 Oph, the absolute physical parameters of the two components are determined, which are $M_1= 0.46(\pm0.02)M_\odot, M_2=1.37(\pm0.02)M_\odot, R_1=0.94(\pm0.01)R_\odot, R_2=1.51(\pm0.01)R_\odot, L_1=1.13(\pm0.02)L_\odot$ and $L_2=2.49(\pm0.03)L_\odot$. The formation and evolutionary status of V502 Oph are discussed. All photoelectric and CCD times of light minimum about V502 Oph are gathered and its orbital period variations are analyzed. The results show that the orbital period of V502 Oph is decreasing continuously at a rate of $dP/dt=-1.69\times{10^{-7}}day\cdot year^{-1}$, which corresponds to a conservative mass transfer rate of $\frac{dM_{2}}{dt}=-3.01\times{10^{-8}}M_\odot/year$. The light-travel time effect (LTTE) is due to the presence of a close-in tertiary component with a period of $P_3=18.7$ years and an amplitute of 0.00402days. V502 Oph is an ideal target to test the formation and evolution theories of binary and multiple systems in which the light curves, $O - C$ curve and spectroscopic observations are comprehensively researched.

A low-mass-ratio and deep contact binary as the progenitor of the merger V1309 Sco

Nova Sco 2008 (=V1309 Sco) is an example of a V838 Mon type eruption rather than a typical classical nova. This enigmatic object was recently shown to have resulted from the merger of two stars in a contact binary. It is the first stellar merger that was identified to be undergoing a common envelope transient. To understand the properties of its binary progenitor, the pre-outburst light curves were analyzed by using the W-D method. The photometric solution of the 2002 light curve shows that it is a deep contact binary (f = 89.5(+-40.5)%) with a mass ratio of 0.094. The asymmetry of the light curve is explained by the presence of a dark spot on the more massive component. The extremely high fill-out factor suggests that the merging of the contact binary is driven by dynamical mass loss from the outer Lagrange point. However, the analysis of the 2004 light curve indicates that no solutions were obtained even at an extremely low mass ratio of q = 0.03. This suggests that the common convective envelope of the binary system disappeared and the secondary component spiraled into the envelope of the primary in 2004. Finally, the ejection of the envelope of the primary produced the outburst.
